đ here and I just realized something about mhaâs narrative is that these kids have no down time whatsoever. Like the narrative gives them no time to breathe, itâs always something that fowards the narrative. They want to go to the mall? Boom! Shigaraki has to be there. Training camp to be better heroes? Letâs just have one of these kids get kidnapped and let 5 other kids rescue him at the downfall of a mentor. Not to mention THE ENTIRE WAR ARC BECAUSE THESE ARE STILL FIRST YEARS (iirc on the timeline that they were first years during war arc). While I get why the writing is like this, shonen jump could've cancelled it at any moment, it just kinda rushes everything and leaves most of the cast to be bland/forgettable (most of 1-A) if not outright have their writing thrown in the trash (I still will not forgive them for throwing the Tenya and Ochaco dynamic with Izuku away).
Like the most they get is the sports festival, some of the training camp arc before it gets thrown out, the cultural festival and maybe the internships but Tsuyu is the only one shown to get a reasonable break in the anime exclusive episodes.
Like let me see Momo trying âcommonerâs foodâ/street food for the first time and seeing how hard people work on the streets, let them having a day to go back to the beach Izuku cleaned up (because I donât think they ever mentioned it after the early series), or a day where they all talk about updating their hero costumes or Izuku mentioning things about their quirks (kinda like how you were sprinkling in for the rewrite). Just GIVE THEM AND THE STORY SOME DOWN TIME AND LET THE CHARACTERS DEVELOP AGH.
NAH BUT LIKE FOR REAL!?!?
People can say what they want about filler or the obligatory beach episodes, but they were great! Just seeing these characters having fun, seeing how they act outside of high-tension, high-stake scenarios.
Who organises hang-outs? Who comes thirty minutes early, who comes an hour late, (totally not me, sorry guys), who always brings painkillers or lip balm or plasters/bandages? Who brings out a deck of cards, who cheats, whose poker face is terrible, who loses every game?
It's great seeing characters, especially teenagers, act their age. Not only does it serve to make the bonds between them feel a bit more real, a bit more strong, but it also allowed the audience to get attached to them properly.
See, I don't have an issue with Tomura showing up at the mall episode. I would have just liked to see the kids actually have fun before the sprinkle of plot development.
Show me Momo or Tenya or Shouto buying that trinket Ochako kept staring at but couldn't afford. Show me Mina beating everyone on DDR, and Tooru trying to compete like a fool. Show me Izuku or Mezou nearly breaking the punching machine. Show me Denki or Hanta making Momo and Shouto try crappy fast food and them actually enjoying it.
The timeline of MHA is ridiculous. Like, pace yourself please?? At least, show me what the kids get up to in the spring, summer, and winter breaks.
Downtime and breaks are extremely important, even in plot-heavy works. It's not just the characters who need a break, but the readers too. It gets exhausting reading about all this tragic stuff, maybe a gag here or there.
I guess Horikoshi may have been afraid that the momentum would be killed, but curbing momentum is what makes final acts feel so grand!
To compare it to a song or a musical number, you never want the score to feel stagnant. If a songs starts slow, the end will be all-out, only going down at the very end. See: It's All Coming Back To Me Now. Starts slow, ends with a massive note, and Celine Dion is joined by other vocals.
If a song starts high and up-beat, what composers will do is drop the melody, either cutting out the vocals or the beat, then let it all go out. Like... Uptown Funk with the toned-down bridge, segwaying into a powerful ending.
Stories work in the same way.
If you continuously build that momentum, without a break, it's going to peak early and feel stagnant the longer it goes. Horikoshi refused to give characters more than a chapter to settle down, and it made it all feel so same-y.
That's part of the reason by the ending of the Final War doesn't feel impactful at all. You're not left thinking, 'wow'. You're thinking, 'finally'.

Skye, the resident (un)original character (blepping). Considering sheâs about the same colour now as her mom is as an adult, but Blueâs colouring has darkened as sheâs grown, Skye is probably going to be a darker grey than Blue is when she grows up. which. would actually make her look at least a little like both of her parents. Iâm not going to claim I planned that, but Iâll take it.

Hey, I saw a fic of redemption Toga fic (with a good dash of time travel) and all fine and good, not here to talk about the fic but...
Have you noticed how the entrance exam makes no sense? I meant the scores and how the teachers (dont recall in canon, but fics love to say "oh those teachers were fascinated by student X and Y" I think it isnt canon) were watching.
Its a school for heroes so why have "villain points"? If a person has villain points shouldn't she or he be expelled (unless the villain points is fanon)
And say it has an explanation. Ok, why the students have to fight a giant robot? Again, assuming it has an explanation...
We are never given any reason for how the students are graded and selected in the classes. What is the big deal on class A1? Shinso seems to think they are the best and resents not be there....why?
Hori never developed the academy part of a story called MY HERO ACADEMY.
Hi @mikeellee đ,
I think the entrance exam was meant to test a couple of things -
How good are you at beating up things? Bakugou obviously excelled at this, he's been practising beating people (mainly Izuku) up all his life đ
How resourceful are you? See Toru who even with just invisibility managed to score enough points to get in the hero course.
And - the hidden point of can you put aside the competition to save someone? Here Izuku did and at great detriment to himself for the sake of Uraraka - this obviously singled him out as having great heroic spirit.
I have no idea why class 1A were given all the hatred / ire when 1B as a fellow hero class were right there as their equals.
With Shinsou - canonically he seems to have a victim complex, he seems sour he couldn't just skate through to the hero course with his powerful quirk in that entrance exam. Let's use the ideas I just mentioned for a second with the entrance exam
1) he's at a disadvantage of not having a naturally combative quirk like Bakugou.
2) he obviously isn't resourceful or clever in battle like Toru since he didn't score enough points to get into the hero course despite this.
3) he obviously didn't try to use his quirk to save someone like Izuku did (maybe there just wasn't someone to save in his exam) or maybe he saw someone in trouble and didn't help them.
These are all things I thought of and established in 10 minutes when Hori never bothers to explore any of this. Despite being called "My Hero Academia " Hori never bothers to explore the academia aspect of the series which is a massive waste.
A few more accurate names for this series have come to my jaded mind (please forgive the bitterness.)
"My Hero Kacchan" - all the Bakugou simping make me think Hori would prefer him instead of Izuku as the MC half the time.
"It's ok if we do it! A stunning story of hero hypocrisy."
"Our Abuser academia" - not where Abusers learn to be better and to stay the fuck away from their victims but where the other characters learn to forgive the abuser if they cry.

I have a theory when it comes to the emasculation & sexualisation of Izuku and rampant sexualisation of the underaged characters in MHA, and why fans and outsiders see it as such.
Before you continue reading I just want to let you know this is not a safe space for proshitters & self identified fujoshis (you know who you are. If the shoe doesnât fit then you can interact). If you are a proshipper or a self identified fujoshis then its best for both our sakes you block me. If I find you in my likes or mentions I will hide your comment and block you.
Iâm also not a fan of toga x oochako, and Im saying this because I mentioned it briefly but its not the worst ship for me to block you (bkdk will always take that spot).
Anyways hereâs a rundown list based on what Iâve observed [Mentions of Homophobia, Misogyny & Sexualisation of underaged characters down below. Read at your own risk]:
1.1 Horikoshiâs bias: Any watcher with critical thinking skills are able to see Horikoshi has a clear bias towards characters like bakugo, aizawa, shinso and mineta and he confirmed it himself. From the beginning to the very end of the manga Horikoshi has failed to respect Midoriyaâs autonomy as a character, and any time we ever got close to introspection its immediately shut out in favour of the same popular characters over and over again.
1.2:Horikoshi has repeatedly sexualised his underaged characters and seems to show no guilt or remorse over such actions, even in his confessions. This was no accident, and any attempt to address this in a critical light in the manga was a failure, just like all the controversial topics he tried to address in the series (mutant arc -I personally donât like how others see it as a racism allegory as a Black person, but thats another topic for another day-, eugenic marriage, trafficking etc.)
It also doesnât help Japan has a rampant pedophilia & SA problem, and the reason you donât see it on the news is because of shame culture + language barrier + their good PR Team. Anybody who tries to tell you it doesnât exist are all liars, and anybody who tries to justify it with it being part of their culture is a racist.
2.From a dudebros perspective: We all know dudebros are obsessed with masculinity and powerscaling, but in some cases they are fine with fictional male characters crying, even male characters who donât fit the traditional masculine role. But Midoriya isnât the traditional masculine role character and he cries alot. Along the way they mustve subconsciously picked up the writers mistreatment of Midoriya, and so to them itâs like why should they respect a character who acts like a crybabying bitch?
And then they see how âcloseâ bakugo & midoriya are. Dudebros as a collective are homophobic, so at first they would deny it, but then slowly but surely theyd pick up on how weird it is for midoriya and bakugo to be this obsessed with each other. Pair that up with the delusional fujoshis who seem to be fucking *everywhere* theyâre going to call Midoriya a gay bitch for being steamrolled by âthe goatâ Bakugo.
Then thereâs the sexualisation part. No words are needed to be said. Dudebros as a collective have little to no morals, especially the misogynistic. They donât care if the character is 14yr old theyâre going to wank their dick off to it regardless and thats the unfortunate truth.
But I feel the other reason why they feel so comfortable wanking off freely is because Horikoshi basically gave them the greenlight to do so. He shamelessly sexualised his characters without attempting to address it in a critical light.
3.From a fandom gay (especially fujoshis) perspective: Itâs inevitable that the fandom gays will always find a way to ship 2 male characters, even if the creator clearly states their relationship is platonic, thatâs just how it is for the better or worse.
To some credit, I can see why the fujoshis are obsessed with bkdk to the point of it being the #1 ship in MHA (never to the point of peak delusional though). Horikoshi doesnât know when to put Bakugo to the side for once, or make Bakugo have his own arc without Midoriya being tied into it. It also doesnât help Horikoshi mishandled Midoriyaâs bullied past so the fujoshis are going to either dismiss that entirely or stupidly justify it in the worst way possible. Everyday its parallel this rival that.
I also personally believe Horikoshi baited BKDK content for some extra cash because he realised thats what the fans are into and also realised how stupid it is to trick them, like dangling a carrot infront of a donkey but thatâs just my conspiracy theory.
If its one thing fujoshis love is pushing heteronormative roles onto their âgayâ favourites and having internalised misogyny, morals be damned. Midoriya is seen as emotional, Bakugo is seen as aggressive. What does that equal to them? Top & Bottom, Alpha & Omega, Dominant & Submissive.
Fujoshis & Proshitters arent going away anytime soon, but because Horikoshi did nothing to shoo away the allegations until the very end of the chapter the fujoshis felt very entitled to act out. If you call them out youâre homophobic, but they would have zero problem dragging Oochako by the mud for daring to get in the way of the ship, and when that arc of her & Toga came out these same ppl who also tried to say Oochako is a love interest repackeged her into being Togaâs love interest under the guise of âgirl power & lets go lesbiansâ.
(Personally as a Lesbian Feminist I am offended by this take but once again I digress)
Once again Horikoshi sexualised his underaged female cast, and while the fandom gays try to play the moral highground holding Horikoshi accountable I personally believe are just as hypocritical. The proshippers mustve subconsciously seen the sexualisation as a greenlight to go full haywire.
~~
TLDR; Horikoshiâs ass writing gave the watchers the greenlight to disrespect Midoriya as this bitch. A crybaby ass bitch from the dudebros and a crybaby bottom bitch from the fujoshis point of view. An ultimate bitch.
These fans will always exist but this reputation is the most prominent Iâve ever seen. In my humble opinion no fandom can ever be compared to MHA and its sheer audacity. Horikoshi & his overall fans donât actually like Midorya and itâs disheartening to watch.

I rarely post in these tags but tell me why those orange green heart broccoli explosion emoji combo whiners are trying to infiltrate the bnha critical tags just because their mid ship wasnât confirmed official.
What actually made you believe bakugo and midoriya was ever going to get together? Like I need you to be serious for a second. Did it seriously take you this long, 8 entire damn years for you to finally get your wakeup call???
Like gtfo out of the tags with your delusional ao3 ââqueerbaitingââ ass. Iâm trying to see well informed written analysis and learn from Horikoshis mistakes on how not to fail as a writing enthusiast.
Go create your own tags or something like anyone gives a damn about your inherent power imbalance ship.
So in your mind Bakugou, a child, should have died? Really?
Bakugou is a fictional character.
The parasocial relationship and puritan crap I keep seeing is just weird.
But if you actually want what I think should have happened with Bakugou? I said it before: his arc should have ended with him being mid-rank and completely content with being a secondary hero. No agency, no top twenty position.
Bakugou is set up as being what society thinks a hero should be. Strong, fit, Flashy Quirk.
Yet as we know he's not a good perso. He makes fun of the guy who doesn't have a Quirk which is treated as a disability. He uses rude nicknames which kinda are Quirkist to. Commenting on the physical appearance of mutant characters who are said to suffer from discrimination due to said appearance. The fact he not only purposely triggers a side effect of a Quirk but seems to mug Kaminari for money to give to Kirishima despite the fact he is a rich kid. (I canât remember if its said the money is his or not but its one of those panels I never know about.) The aggressiveness, the rudeness- it adds up.
What should have happened if we want to make Bakugou go through character development to be a better person is that he 1) faces more consequences for his attitude then he does in canon (IE: he is called out for the insults and name calling. A few angry comments from Shouji, Tsu or any of the mutant characters should have occurred. He gets called out and when he doesn't change people avoid him. He is ignored by them unless they are working with him or he needs help. Its made clear they do not want to be around him.) 2) faces actual punishment for his actions towards Izuku or others (IE: Kaminari makes a complaint about being forced into whey mode, Bakugou gets a warning or something. He receives punishment for nearly killing Izuku during the battle trials and ignoring a teacher. He is disqualified for trying to attack Todoroki after his match at the sports festival, not that mess of a situation) 3) Is not in any way an âimportantâ character.
The third one is tricky so I'll explain. It goes beyond the âIzuku shouldn't be have to be friends with Bakugou like he kind of isâ issues I have.
By this I mean Bakugou should be redundant as a character and the narrative shows it. He should find himself sinking while everyone else climbs higher. His Quirk SHOULD have actually drawbacks we see. Not just the mention of wrist issues. We should see him hurt himself and need to take a second. He should have frankly lost the sports festival to Uraraka and not gone on. And part of that SHOULD have been his Quirk not working how he wanted it to. Because the world relies on Quirks and Bakugou is hyper reliant on his.
Make it clear that's why. Then I want Bakugou to not be at the top of the class. Why? Because he is the normal fish who moved from his tiny pond to a big old ocean. Yes, heâs smart but take it from someone whose brother was smart in a small town: that donât mean shit when your teachers suck.
Bakugou can be top ten. I just want him to have to face the fact he isn't the top of the class. The big dog on campus because everyone else is just as driven as he is, and some of them are smarter or faster or more skilled then he is.
This should end with Bakugou making his realization after the final exams where he hits Izuku and is flunked for it. It should have been noted and due to the fact in a real situation like that you'd end up probably arrested or investigated, he fails.
This should have been the turning point. When we actually see Bakugou break down. When the class has stepped away from him. When the only one sticking around is Kirishima because the guy honestly thinks Bakugou can be a better person.
Key phrase: CAN BE. Not that he is. I want it to be clear Kirishima sees good in Bakugou and wants to bring it out. Not that Bakugou is secretly a tsundere.
This is the turning point became it leads to the LOV attacking the camp looking for Bakugou because they see him like them. I want them to have noticied his antics in the festival where he is aggressive and loud. I'd like for Aoyama to have been feeding info about recruits. I want Bakugou to hear they want HIM as he's villainous and this should shake him.
He isn't kidnapped. Someone else is. Tokoyami actually to bring focus to mutation and Quirk discrimination.
I want Bakugou to truly have to look at HIMSELF as a person. And realize he isn't what he wants to be. A hero.
This leads into him eventually becoming a much better person as he works through his shit. Its going to be messy. And I want him to struggle through it. While doing so he slowly fades into the background. We turn attention to Uraraka, Todoroki, Tsu, Aoyama and Iida as the secondary characters to our protagonist Izuku.
We get to know them, we get to know Aoyama as he integrates himself into their circle. We have way more of a punch for the traitor.
In the end I want an apology from Bakugou to Izuku that is meaningful and honest and then⊠he goes off, becomes a hero ranked like 150 and is happy. He's buddies with Kirishima and a few others, he goes to the reunion with a hi. Maybe the offer of a team up or not.
And I think that would have been the perfect ending to his arc. From the bully to the atoner.
Meme I found on reddit that quite accurately describes how certain parts of the fandom are taking the extra chapterâŠ
