messages for those with NPD, BPD, ASPD, or HPD
you are loved, valued, and important.
the people in your life care about you, even if sometimes it doesn't feel that way.
i'm glad you're here today.
your needs matter. your feelings matter. your limits matter.
oh to frolic around and spin and twirl in a large empty ballroom, with rose petals on the floor, while wearing a dark gown, as dramatic music plays in the background bouncing off the walls, making this your moment

the moment of being arospec where, you want it to be known that you are interested in having a romantic relationship, so that someone interested in you can hopefully confess their feelings, so that you can finally develop these romantic feelings and reciprocate them, and maybe get into a romantic relationship with them, but in the end never actually doing it, because you are afraid that people will call you not actually aromantic and just faking it
Flawed characters are the ones we root for, cry over, and remember long after the story ends. But creating a character whoโs both imperfect and likable can feel like a tightrope walk.ย
1. Flaws That Stem From Their Strengths
When a characterโs greatest strength is also their Achilles' heel, it creates depth.
Strength: Fiercely loyal.
Flaw: Blind to betrayal or willing to go to dangerous extremes for loved ones.
โSheโd burn the whole world down to save her sisterโeven if it killed her.โ
2. Let Their Flaws Cause Problems
Flaws should have consequencesโmessy, believable ones.
Flaw: Impatience.
Result: They rush into action, ruining carefully laid plans.
โI thought I could handle it myself,โ he muttered, staring at the smoking wreckage. โGuess not.โ
3. Show Self-Awarenessโor Lack Thereof
Characters who know theyโre flawed (but struggle to change) are relatable. Characters who donโt realize their flaws can create dramatic tension.
A self-aware flaw: โI know I talk too much. Itโs justโฆ silence makes me feel like Iโm disappearing.โ A blind spot: โWhat do you mean I always have to be right? Iโm just better at solving problems than most people!โ
4. Give Them Redeeming Traits
A mix of good and bad keeps characters balanced.
Flaw: Theyโre manipulative.
Redeeming Trait: They use it to protect vulnerable people.
โYes, I lied to get him to trust me. But he wouldโve died otherwise.โ
Readers are more forgiving of flaws when they see the bigger picture.
5. Let Them GrowโBut Slowly
Instant redemption feels cheap. Characters should stumble, fail, and backslide before they change.
Early in the story: โI donโt need anyone. Iโve got this.โ
Midpoint: โOkay, fine. Maybe I could use some help. But donโt get used to it.โ
End: โThank you. For everything.โ
The gradual arc makes their growth feel earned.
6. Make Them Relatable, Not Perfect
Readers connect with characters who feel humanโmessy emotions, bad decisions, and all.
A bad decision: Skipping their best friendโs wedding because theyโre jealous of their happiness.
A messy emotion: Feeling guilty afterward but doubling down to justify their actions.
A vulnerable moment: Finally apologizing, unsure if theyโll be forgiven.
7. Use Humor as a Balancing Act
Humor softens even the most prickly characters.
Flaw: Cynicism.
Humorous side: Making snarky, self-deprecating remarks that reveal their softer side.
โLove? No thanks. Iโm allergic to heartbreakโand flowers.โ
8. Avoid Overdoing the Flaws
Too many flaws can make a character feel unlikable or overburdened.
Instead of: A character whoโs selfish, cruel, cowardly, and rude.
Try: A character whoโs selfish but occasionally shows surprising generosity.
โDonโt tell anyone I helped you. I have a reputation to maintain.โ
9. Let Them Be Vulnerable
Vulnerability adds layers and makes flaws understandable.
Flaw: Theyโre cold and distant.
Vulnerability: Theyโve been hurt before and are terrified of getting close to anyone again.
โItโs easier this way. If I donโt care about you, then you canโt leave me.โ
10. Make Their Flaws Integral to the Plot
When flaws directly impact the story, they feel purposeful rather than tacked on.
Flaw: Their arrogance alienates the people they need.
Plot Impact: When their plan fails, theyโre left scrambling because no one will help them.
Flawed but lovable characters are the backbone of compelling stories. They remind us that imperfection is humanโand that growth is possible.
