it was finally friday. your classes were done for the week, your assignments were all completed and the forecast said it'd be raining all weekend? you were frankly excited as fuck.

currently you were cuddled in bed with shoko rewatching howl's moving castle for the 15th time. well- you were rewatching it. shoko dozed off 5 minutes ago after she said she was just going to "close her eyes." you allowed her this time, though, because of how tired she seemed this week.

you'd reached the lake when you became unusually parched. while trying your best not to wake your roommate, you wormed out of your sheets and headed for the kitchen.

you chugged 1,2,3 glasses of water, but you weren't satisfied yet. you spun to look at the miffy clock (thank you, iori) that hung above the sink.

10:36 pm.

you sat in thought for a moment. there was a cafe that sold the most refreshing teas, and the location was only a 5 minute walk from the dorms.

ugh, screw it.

you threw on a hoodie over your pajamas, grabbed your keys, and quietly left, not forgetting to write shoko a note in case she woke up (she probably wouldn't).

the air outside was cool but comfortable, the ground wet from the downpour earlier. you couldn't help but take notice of all the slugs and snails that crept and crawled around the damp sidewalk. it was like they were all on a little walk with you too!

after a calm 5 minute walk, you finally saw the cafe sign on your horizon. excitement definitely took over because before you could even notice, your pace quickened and you were inside in no time.

a familiar warmth enveloped you as soon as you entered, with the speakers whispering smooth jazz. you could literally live here. there was also a lack of customers, only a few couples and people typing away at their laptops in the background. no one to disrupt your peace, though.

it'd been 15 minutes since you ordered your drink and you were still parched and drink less. you understood that working the night shift isn't easy and many of the workers are college students trying to make a few extra dollars, but wow!

you were genuinely getting impatient. with a huff you shot yourself up from your seat. it was as if the universe was on your side, though. because as soon as you made 2 steps, your order was called and placed on the counter.

oh my gosh, yay!

you butterflied over to the counter to receive your drink, thinking nothing more than going home and finishing your movie. in a swift motion, you grabbed for it. but in an even swifter motion, it was taken from you.

your eyebrows furrowed. you really did not have the patience for this tonight. you turned to the culprit, and your annoyance immediately spiked. because there was geto suguru, sauntering over to the door with your drink in hand.

oh hell no

in an instant, you rushed over to the door, placing your body between him and the doorway. he was a bit too slow to notice you, though, and he crashed into you, spilling half of your drink on the floor.

your eyes actually twitched. your blood boiled. you had to bite your tongue from cussing this man out.

"what the fuck? get out the way dumba- wait, y/n?" perplexity danced across his face, as if he was unaware of the crime he'd just committed.

whatever you said next wasn't you and was your anger and thirst speaking.

" "wait, y/n?" " you mocked him, mimicking his confused expression. "yeah, idiot. it's me. shy, little y/n can buy tea too, y'know. I genuinely didn't know I was supposed to stay at home like the fucking hermit I am on a friday night," at this point, you were making a scene, and geto noticed it, but he was too amused to stop you. "oh, and by the way," you point a vengeful finger at the half full drink in the male's hand. "that drink is mine." your chest rose and fell after speaking so much so quickly.

geto quirked an eyebrow as he laughed shallowly. he handed you the cup and watched as your face fell in horror. etched on the cup, in fact, not your name. but 'sugu' with a heart and a phone number written on it, presumably from one of the baristas. to further confirm your horror, you spun around and saw the exact same drink, sitting alone on the counter.

you actually felt tears brimming in your eyes as the reality of the situation fell like bricks on your shoulders. you just embarrassed yourself. in public. for no reason.

"oh! um, haha! this isn't my name!" fake laughter spilled out of your mouth on repeat.

could this night get any worse?

"you know you have to pay for my drink too now, right?"

you looked up and genuinely wished the world would explode right now. you only came with enough money to buy one drink.

"is that really necessary? I mean, it's just tea, amirighthahahaha.." unfortunately, geto's expression was, well, expressionless. any hint of amusement dissipated from his features in an instant. actually, he looked more annoyed than anything.

"you don't have any money, do you?"

"..."

"no." your response came out as a whisper, barely even audible for geto to hear.

"oh, that's a shame. so, i'll be taking yours then?"

what?

"I beg your pardon?" you understood that you did too much, but wasn't this just a tad bit petty?

"I mean, you did spill my drink, it's cold and raining now, and you have no money to pay me back. isn't it only fair?" you were about to cry at this point. you felt defeated.

you could only nod, any words you'd try to speak would have turned to sobs.

and so, geto walked past you, picked up your drink, and sauntered right out the door, sparing you not a glance in the process. you could hear the downpour outside when he opened and closed the door.

this is great!

you didn't even have an umbrella, and you were definitely not asking geto for a ride home after that performance. so, you bit the bullet and sprinted home, nearly slipping a few times. your eyes were cloudy from your tears mixed with the raindrops. by the time you returned to your dorm, your hair and clothes were soaked, your eyes were puffy and red, and it pained you to even breathe.

maybe you really should've just settled for some water.

rin itoshi only favoured a few things in his life. that is; football and being the best. he never fancied studying or being popular. not to say that he wasn't either of those things! some might say he was quite the opposite. even with all the effort he put into being the best striker, he still found time to study and take notes and go to class. he wasn't a loner either. he was actually quite well known around campus for how skilled he was with a ball and his striking good looks. yup! stoic front and all, rin was the talk of the campus and piles of love letters formed hills and mountains in his locker and confessions rolled off the tongues of passersby. not that he cared for that, anyway.

he cared for football, being the best, and one more thing. something that he'd never verbally confess but when he wasn't training profusely or studying his hardest for an upcoming exam, he allowed his mind to wander to you and what you were doing. if you were studying as well or if you had your nose deep in this week's novel. he sometimes wondered if you somehow thought about him too, as silly as the thought was to him. he could feel his heart run laps in his chest when you'd walk past him in the hallways or how the hairs that ran along his forearms would raise when he heard you smoothly ask a question during classes. 

sometimes, if his teammates were lucky, rin would ask them what they thought of you but their answers were all unsatisfactory to him. "y/n? she's pretty cute." some would say. or "yeah, she's nice, why?" he never understood how you could be "just nice" to anyone when to him, your beauty exceeded his understanding. not just your physical beauty, but the way you treated others. how you'd offer to help teachers who struggled to carry various school equipment or how you'd tutor the other jocks at school. it all forced him to admire you more. that's what he referred to it as, anyway. that squeeze that he'd feel in his chest when he saw you speaking so comfortably with your other classmates or how upset he'd feel when he overheard you speaking to your friends about the date you went on last Friday (they never ended well) were all labelled as pure admiration. 

TRUE ROMANCE

I. prologue

friday nights were always special to you. that's when you can sit on your bed with your glittered pens and pour your heart into your journal. as love songs spew from your unicorn speaker― a tacky gift from your grandma but you still cherish it, you sit crisscrossed and doodle and rant and confess all your deepest darkest secrets of that week. and sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll have someone to write about. you'd gush over the way they smelled that day or the eye contact you both held (that you swear was intentional and lasted more than 2 seconds). it was childish, really. while other girls were hooking up with guys or out having fun at least, you were at home in your pyjamas, geeking over the way barou shouei helped you pick up textbooks which had long deserted your arms and fell to the floor. when you'd finished putting all of your feelings onto the page, sometimes pages, you'd address the letter, seal it, and store it in your special box under your bed—the box your mom kept from the 90s. It was bright pink, and the inside was lined with leopard print, and you were so excited when she gifted it to you. you felt closer to her somehow. but anyway, the letters aren't harming anyone and it's not like they'd get mailed one day. that's what you told yourself, anyway. because it's impossible for anyone to find them, right?
