Ideas Of Exercises To Help With Your Practical Art Skills, As Well As Things To Keep In Mind While Making

ideas of exercises to help with your practical art skills, as well as things to keep in mind while making art and new ways to find inspiration:

draw every day

recreate a drawing you did before, but better

draw something using only simple geometric shapes

do studies of famous artworks

listen to artists explain their work, it’s super interesting

take life drawing classes (or use online photo resources)

find an artwork you love, and work out why

draw caricatures of friends

set a 1 minute timer and draw an object as quickly as possible

draw something you can’t see, eg. music, emotion

research artists you admire and find out how they work

think about composition: what stands out, what recedes etc.

find a famous artwork you hate and work out why

sit outside and draw the landscape

copy a photo exactly

draw a scene from a film

draw the contours of an object not the outline

visit an art exhibition near you

draw your bedroom

look up tutorials online - there’s so many useful ones!

practise creating contrast between light and dark in pictures

research colour theory

do a self portrait

learn about art history! Research different movements etc.

try a new medium

consider the feeling you want to portray with the artwork

draw without looking at the page

draw a character from a book you’ve read

draw something you don’t usually draw

look at your pictures in the mirror to help you see problems better

follow artists and galleries on instagram for inspo

draw an ugly object in a beautiful way

try using only bold, bright colours

plan your colour palette before starting an artwork, and stick to it!

if you usually work in 2D, make something in 3D

always remember to add shadows

draw an object which is important to you

use 5 lines to depict an object, make every line count

draw using negative space

always draw from life when possible!

think carefully about which direction the light is coming from

study proportions and anatomy!!

draw your pet

research items symbolic meanings in art

make an art blog to compile images that inspire you

draw using only straight lines

try accentuating any subtle colours in an image

draw models from fashion websites

sketch with friends! They always have great ideas

keep drawing even if you find it hard, you improve with every mistake!

{my art masterpost might also be useful to you}

Good luck! xx

Celebrities and web companies back DonateForNetNeutrality.com matching fund to spark massive protest ahead of net neutrality CRA deadline

Celebrities And Web Companies Back DonateForNetNeutrality.com Matching Fund To Spark Massive Protest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 1, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, press@fightforthefuture.org

Evangeline Lilly, Bassnectar, Tom Morello, Justin Sun, Postmates, Namecheap, Cory Doctorow, Private Internet Access among donors

A number of well liked web companies and high profile individuals have banded together to back a crowdfunding effort launched by digital rights group Fight for the Future. Ant-Man and the Wasp star Evangeline Lilly, legendary guitarist Tom Morello, Tron CEO Justin Sun, author Cory Doctorow, and EDM hero Bassnectar are teaming up with companies like Postmates, Namecheap, and Private Internet Access matching Internet users’ donations to raise money for an epic final push for net neutrality as the deadline approaches for Congress to reverse the FCC’s repeal of open Internet protections.

See the crowdfunding page here: DonateForNetNeutrality.com

Organizers hope to raise $100,000 to fund mass online protests, crowdfunded ad buys, and strategic in-district organizing pushing for House members to support the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to restore net neutrality before Congress adjourns at the end of the year. The full list of “Internet defenders” who are matching grassroots donations 100%, includes: Bassnectar, Cory Doctorow, Tom Morello, Evangeline Lilly, Private Internet Access, Justin Sun, AnchorFree, iFixit, Lookfar, Namecheap, Pornhub, Postmates, Startpage, Bittorrent, and Tron.

“These folks are taking on the telecom lobby machine and fighting for a free, open, and uncensored Internet,” said Tom Morello, “Net neutrality is the free speech fight of this generation and time is running out. It’s time for the Internet to rise up again.”

“This is not a partisan issue, the battle for the net is a fight for our most basic freedoms. People from across the entire political spectrum can agree that we don’t want anyone to control or manipulate what we see and do on the Internet,” added actress Evangeline Lilly (Lost, Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Hobbit).

“Given my deep belief in an open and decentralized internet, I support Donatefornetneutrality.com and urge others to do the same in this critical moment where Congress can still act in favor of net neutrality,” said Justin Sun, founder and CEO of TRON. “When the internet is free and open, it fosters innovation that benefits not just a few, but all of us. It’s our responsibility to protect these core values and push our community towards the cause.”

“Net neutrality is not dead yet. Not even close,” said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, “But time is running out on our best chance to get Congress to save the open Internet and give Ajit Pai the worst day of his political career. Comcast and AT&T’s lobbyists are doing everything they can to make sure Congress adjourns without addressing this. We have to make it something they can’t ignore.”

🚨Our last best chance to vote for net neutrality 🚨

🚨Our Last Best Chance To Vote For Net Neutrality 🚨

Alright, Tumblr, we have a new mission: get the entire Internet to pressure lawmakers into restoring net neutrality before election day.

We’re two weeks away from the midterm elections and we need to educate as many people as possible about where their candidates stand on net neutrality before November 6th.

By now, I’m sure most of you are familiar with the FCC’s undemocratic repeal of net neutrality. The good news is that sitting members of Congress have the power to restore it using the Congressional Review Act (CRA) before the end of this year.

So we’re telling our elected officials: sign the discharge petition to restore net neutrality, or face the wrath of the Internet on Election Day.

Sitting members of Congress have had tons of time to do the right thing, but their time is almost up. We’re in the final crunch before election day and we need to make sure they know there is a massive voting block of people who care about this issue.

Here’s what you can do to help out:

Get as many net neutrality supporters to vote for the first time as possible. Tell everyone to text VOTE to 687-88 to get started. (Message and data rates apply, reply STOP to opt out.)

Educate folks about where their candidates stand using the Vote for Net Neutrality scorecard.

Volunteer to text voters in key districts where our pressure calling for lawmakers to act can have the most impact.

Join a local action team to organize protests, pass out lawn signs, and do voter education at the polls in key districts.

Spread the word on Tumblr and wherever else you lurk. Click here to find Vote for Net Neutrality materials for sharing.

We’re so close to saving net neutrality.

In May, the Senate passed the CRA resolution to overturn the FCC’s repeal in a historic bipartisan vote of 52-47.

Now all we need is for a simple majority of 218 House representatives to sign a discharge petition and bring the CRA to a vote.

Right now 177 members, including Republican Rep. Mike Coffman, have already signed on. We just need your help to pressure lawmakers to choose their constituents ahead of telecom lobbyists by signing the discharge petition.

Can we enlist you in the Internet’s most important mission?

Hooray for California! Let’s hope we can take this to a national level now.

BREAKING: California Governor signs nation’s strongest net neutrality protections into law

BREAKING: California Governor Signs Nation’s Strongest Net Neutrality Protections Into Law

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 30, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, press@fightforthefuture.org

California Governor Jerry Brown just signed into law SB 822, the strongest and most comprehensive state-level net neutrality bill in the country. The bill passed the state legislature with overwhelming and bipartisan support, and could unleash a wave of similar efforts in other states, with serious implications in the fight to restore net neutrality nationwide.

“This victory in California is a testament to the power of the free and open Internet to defend itself. And it’s a beacon of hope for Internet users everywhere who are fighting for the basic right to express themselves and access information without cable and phone companies controlling what they can see and do online.” said Evan Greer (pronouns: she/her), deputy director of Fight for the Future, the digital rights group that played a leading role in passing SB 822 and bringing national attention to the bill. “Despite their army of lobbyists and millions spent lining the pockets of legislators, these companies continue to lose ground in the face of overwhelming cross-partisan opposition to their greedy attacks on our Internet freedom. When all is said and done, Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T are going to wish they’d never picked a fight with Internet over net neutrality. Other states should follow California’s lead, and Congress should pass the joint resolution to reverse the FCC’s resoundingly unpopular repeal.”

SB 822 becoming law is a major victory for Internet activists who harnessed massive public outcry to pass the bill and a resounding defeat for big telecom companies like AT&T and Comcast, who spent millions to defeat the bill. SB 822 was nearly scuttled by fierce telecom lobbying, but prevailed after Fight for the Future brought the full force of the Internet down on California legislators, including crowdfunded billboards and a thousands of phone calls.

Californians will now be protected from giant ISPs like AT&T and Comcast, who will once again be barred from blocking, throttling and paid prioritization. Like the 2015 Open Internet Order that was repealed in 2017, the bill also bans ISPs from charging websites to load for the ISPs subscribers or using the point where data enters the ISPs network to evade net neutrality. Finally, the bill also makes sure that Californians are protected from mega-corporations like the newly minted AT&T-TimeWarner who want to push their content and services on subscribers, while harming all other speakers and companies on the internet.

SB 822 is widely regarded as the best state-level net neutrality bill in the country. That’s why AT&T and Verizon fought so hard, even managing to gut the bill in committee in June. But after howls of outrage online from the grassroots, the bill later passed with all the key protections Since California is the world’s fifth leading economy, SB 822 has implications for the entire nation. Its passage with bipartisan support is expected to bolster efforts in Congress to reverse the FCC’s repeal using the Congressional Review Act (CRA.)

Giant Internet service providers like AT&T and Comcast poured enormous amounts of money into lobbying and misinformation campaigns to stop SB 822 and managed to gut it once in committee. They funded astroturf front groups, who targeted seniors with misleading robocalls, and ran outrageous Twitter ads generating tweets targeting California assembly members that look like they’re from real constituents. One of these groups, CALinnovates, which was paid $200,000 to run dark ads on Facebook and Twitter, even lies about its membership, claiming Uber is a partner when the company denies it.

Fight for the Future recently launched VoteForNetNeutrality.com, an explosive national level campaign focused on pressuring lawmakers to sign on to the CRA resolution ahead of the midterm elections.

Net neutrality activists plan to educate millions of voters about candidate stances ahead of midterms

Net Neutrality Activists Plan To Educate Millions Of Voters About Candidate Stances Ahead Of Midterms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 25, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, press@fightforthefuture.org

Vote For Net Neutrality campaign will enlist the entire Internet to pressure lawmakers facing tight races to sign CRA discharge petition or face the consequences

Kicking off on National Voter Registration Day, one of the most prominent open Internet advocacy groups, Fight for the Future, has launched Vote For Net Neutrality, an explosive campaign that seeks to educate millions of people about where Senate and House candidates stand on restoring net neutrality ahead of the midterm elections, enlisting the entire Internet in the mission of pressuring incumbent lawmakers who are facing tight races to do the right thing or face the Internet’s wrath on election day. The campaign makes use of cutting edge mobile technology, including a chatbot flow that allows Internet users to register to vote, sign up for voting reminders, and find out where candidates in their area stand on net neutrality, all from their phones using SMS messages.

Participants will be encouraged to focus their collective energy to pressure sitting members of Congress in tight races who have failed to take action to restore net neutrality and are facing off against challengers who say they would do so were they elected. Local action teams in key districts are planning protests, lawn signs, and voter education at the polls. Internet users who don’t live in one of the priority districts will be encouraged to join a volunteer texting team to educate as many voters in those districts as possible about where the candidates stand before they head to the polls.

“Net neutrality is going to be an issue in the 2018 elections,” said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, “We’re harnessing the power of the Internet to educate voters on a mass scale and turn up the heat on sitting members of Congress to do the right thing or face the consequences in November. We’ll make sure that every sitting member of Congress knows that if they ignore their constituents on this issue and side with some of the most power hungry and unpopular corporations in the world, their constituents will know about their betrayal when they go to the polls.”

Reblogging because this is really good advice!

Hi Jenny, I was curious and looking for advice. I graduated from LCAD just last year, but I'm still having a lot of trouble achieving a more natural look to my digital art and linework. (I took Vargo's digital painting class, but my linework usually looks like stairsteps instead of smooth). Your work is always very lovely, smooth, and natural looking, is it okay if I ask what you do to achieve it? Or what program/tablet do you prefer to use?

Hi there, thanks for the kind words! First off I want to make a disclaimer for everyone here at the top: these are my own thoughts and opinions based on how I personally work & perceive my work. This advice is not for everyone, if it’s not for you that’s totally cool, everyone has their own path!As for your question this is a really difficult one to answer. There is no program or brush that helps with what you are trying to achieve. All the drawings I do are done in photoshop on a Wacom Cintiq (sometimes an iPad) and each drawing uses a variety of the Kyle brushes. I understand the frustration of not being taught how to clean digital line work or even to be able to sketch digitally but the best way to think of it is if you are inking on paper and to treat it the same way- difference is there is the safety net of the Cntrl Z hah. I also was never taught how to sketch or draw in any program so I was self taught, even through college. I had to just practice constantly until I was able to achieve the line quality that I was after.

Here are some great tips I have gotten over the years:

-The line is the essence of what you are drawing, it’s more than just the contour of the form or an identifiable path; it is the flow and movement in which the drawing is given life

-Try not to make mindless lines, every line should have it’s purpose so do it thoughtfully. This means being thoughtful of your silhouettes, straight against curves, so on & so forth.

-Try not to lift your pencil off of the paper so much, if you want to avoid the “hairy line”

-Be aware if you are using your shoulder/ elbow movement to draw or if you are tensing up & only using your wrist. This breaks fluidity in your body thus also breaking the fluidity of the drawing.

-Be confident in your lines- it shows!

-Less is more

I’m sorry there isn’t a definitive answer for this question but I hope these tips help. In the end it really just took me a lot of practice, self study & self discipline. Don’t give up & just keep practicing! <3

Ajit Pai seems really upset about the California net neutrality bill that passed with bipartisan support

Ajit Pai Seems Really Upset About The California Net Neutrality Bill That Passed With Bipartisan Support

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 14, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, press@fightforthefuture.org

Yesterday, FCC chairman Ajit Pai spoke at an event where he ranted about SB 822, the California bill that rebukes his repeal of net neutrality, which passed the state legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support.

It’s more than a bit ironic that Pai chose Maine to make his remarks as both its Senators, a Republican and an Independent, voted in May to overturn his resoundingly unpopular repeal of the FCC’s open Internet protections.

“No matter how hard he tries, Ajit Pai is just never going to convince a meaningful number of Internet users that letting Verizon, Comcast, and AT&T to censor the web and charge new fees is a good idea,” said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, “When Pai calls the California net neutrality bill the “most egregious” response to his repeal of net neutrality, the public knows to interpret that as “most badass.” Governor Jerry Brown shouldn’t let big telecoms or con artist bureaucrats like Ajit Pai push him around. He needs to sign SB 822 and set an example for the rest of the country.”

The fight over SB 822 has implications for the entire nation. Giant Internet service providers like AT&T and Comcast poured enormous amounts of money into lobbying efforts to stop the legislation. They’ve even been caught funding astroturf front groups, who  targeted seniors with misleading robocalls, and ran outrageous Twitter ads generating tweets targeting California assembly members that look like they’re from real constituents. One of these groups, CALinnovates, even lies about its membership, claiming Uber is a partner when the company denies it. On Thursday, an investigative report revealed that AT&T’s top lobbyist in Sacramento is not properly registered as a lobbyist, raising ethics questions.

ISP lobbyists managed to gut SB 822 once in committee. But the bill was restored and eventually passed after massive public outcry and the threat of crowdfunded billboards targeting legislators that tried to water it down.

Fight for the Future is a maintaining a click-to-call tool and public scoreboard of how California legislators voted at battleforthenet.com/california, and will continue advocacy to ensure that Governor Jerry Brown signs SB 822 into law.

What is the FCC hiding? Court orders agency to release info about who submitted fake comments during net neutrality repeal

What Is The FCC Hiding? Court Orders Agency To Release Info About Who Submitted Fake Comments During

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, September 18, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, press@fightforthefuture.org

Reports today show that a DC District Court judge has ordered the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to disclose previously-unreleased information that will assist the public in understanding how millions of fake comments were submitted to the FCC using stolen names and addresses during the agency’s 2017 proceeding to repeal net neutrality. Digital rights group Fight for the Future, who was among the first to launch an investigation into the fake comments and have long called for a full investigation into the fake comments submitted onto the agency’s net neutrality docket, welcomes the court’s decision as a positive step forward for those who had their names fraudulently placed onto the FCC’s record.

The following statement can be attributed to Evan Greer, Fight for the Future’s Deputy Director [pronouns: she / her]:

“My first question is: why is the FCC spending taxpayer dollars fighting journalists in court in order to keep this information secret in the first place? What are they hiding? Who are they covering for?

Fight for the Future is one of many groups that used the FCC’s bulk upload feature to submit real comments from real people concerned about the agency’s repeal of net neutrality. We have no problem with the FCC releasing this information. The only reason to keep it hidden is to prevent the public from learning which groups abused this comment system by submitting fraudulent comments, and who funded them.

Let’s face it, the FCC has lost all credibility since their alleged ‘DDoS attack’ turned out to be an outright lie that they used to downplay the overwhelming opposition to their repeal of net neutrality. This court ruling is a solid step forward for the millions of Internet users and small business owners who took the time to submit real comments opposing the FCC’s net neutrality repeal.

The FCC should comply with this court order immediately and release any and all information they have related to the fraud and abuse that they refused to address during the net neutrality public comment process.”

Fight for the Future is one of the groups behind the BattleForTheNet.com campaign and has been actively pressuring Congress to pass the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval to restore the FCC’s 2015 net neutrality protections. In May, the CRA passed the Senate in a historic bipartisan support and activists are now fighting a trench warfare campaign to force a vote in the House of Representatives.

Firefighters and First Responders call on Congress to restore net neutrality following Verizon throttling

Firefighters And First Responders Call On Congress To Restore Net Neutrality Following Verizon Throttling

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 28, 2018 Contact: Evan Greer, 978-852-6457, press@fightforthefuture.org

More than 1,000 firefighters, EMTs, and other emergency workers have signed an open letter that launched this week

Amid outcry over Verizon’s throttling of Internet service used by a fire department battling the worst wildfire in California history, more than 1,000 firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, and other emergency workers have signed an open letter calling on Congress to pass the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to reverse the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality.

See the open letter here: FirstRespondersForNetNeutrality.com

“Access to reliable, high-quality broadband is essential for our work,” the letter, which was just launched this week, reads. “We routinely place ourselves in dangerous situations to assist others and save lives. But since the Federal Communications Commission repealed net neutrality rules and other key protections in December 2017, the communication services we rely on to do our jobs are no longer meaningfully protected from being arbitrarily slowed, blocked, or otherwise degraded by Internet service providers.”

It continues, “In response, we are joining with millions of businesses, veterans, and Internet users in asking Congress to use their Congressional Review Act (CRA) powers to restore the strong net neutrality rules and other consumer protections that were lost when the FCC voted to repeal its 2015 Open Internet Order.”

Many first responders also included personalized comments with their open letter signature. Here are some of the comments below:

“Currently serving in armed forces and away from California. It is distressing seeing citizens and friends not receiving the best possible emergency services due to ISP throttling.” –Louis G., EMT in Santa Barbara California

“My department uses Verizon for emergency services and cannot afford to be throttled.” –Paul S., firefighter in Santa Ana, California

“Our call paging system relies on private ISPs to relay information from 911 dispatchers to ambulances — it is unconscionable for corporations to endanger public safety for the sake of profit.” –Corey S., paramedic in San Diego

“EMTs rely on data to receive pages, vital paperwork necessary for patient care, and to help locate calls outside of our service area. Throttling speeds can delay care and cost lives.” –Larry T., EMT in Little Rock Arkansas

The open letter was just launched this week with support from Fight for the Future, a digital rights organization fighting for net neutrality and an open Internet. Many more signers are expected to join in the coming weeks.

This almost matches my current mood tbh.

I Win.
I Win.
I Win.
I Win.
I Win.

I win.

I got introspective one day and sketched out a 6 panel comic. It sat in a folder for a few days before I expanded it to 10. Then it sat for a week. After which, I moved on. The expiration date had passed, and the comic joined the rest of the half-drawn files in the very same folder.

I still don’t like it anymore, but I’ll take the victories where I can.

Because I was asked how I proceed on another picture but I didn’t really save my steps so this time I have been more careful.

It’s a very chaotic and intuitive process, so I guess it’s more to reply to @rincat21 than for giving tips or helping\teaching something. I used for a very long time the flats+shades+highlights technique, but I am a control maniac when it’s about pics and I find that this way there is more control on the final colors since the beginning. On a less refined way, I do the same when sketching. This took about 5h and it’s my feel-good technique.

That’s all i suppose…? I am very likely to be around (must get comics pages finished by the end of the year so to celebrate when I’ll meet my colleague at the comics fair LOL) so if you want more in-depth info on something just ask :)

The Internet Is Keeping Score

The internet is keeping score

Tumblr, we know you’ve been fighting valiantly to restore net neutrality. Whether you added widgets to your Tumblrs, or reblogged posts to spread the word to your followers, or contacted your reps asking them to keep the internet free and open as we know it—you’re helping. You’re doing it. Let’s keep that momentum up.

BattleForTheNet.com (@fight4future) is letting Congress know that the internet is keeping score of every Congressperson who is and is not supporting the restoration of net neutrality.

Right now you can visit that scoreboard and easily look up whether or not your reps support the Congressional Review Act resolution.

This CRA will restore the net neutrality rules the FCC dismantled back in November 2017. They have 177 signatures, but need 44 more. You can help make that happen. This grassroots effort is working. Just two days ago Rep. Mike Coffman listened to his constituents from Colorado and became the first Republican to support the Democrat-led CRA. Keep putting that same pressure on your congresspeople. Urge them to sign the petition. If your congressperson has already pledged to support the CRA, reblog this post, add the new widget to your Tumblr (just copy and paste the small line of code from Battle For The Net right into the customize theme page on the web), and shout out what’s happening on all of your social media accounts. We have to spread the word.

Keep going, Tumblr. This matters, and you’re making a marked difference.
