Rayaari headcanon - the required Coffee Shop AU
Despite being a busy student in her final year, Raya picks up shifts at her Ba's Heart Cafe when they are suddenly a manager down.
Namaari is a regular customer at the cafe. She loves to spend hours studying in the corner of the cafe, papers strewn across the table and an endless supply of iced tea at her elbow. Her addiction to caffeine is too strong for her to be at a library instead.
The first time Raya sees Namaari, she almost forgets how to make her order, since her brain is too busy short-circuiting. Sisu spends the rest of the shift (and half of the next) making fun of her.
Sisu then ensures Raya is the one to serve Namaari every time she comes into the cafe.
Namaari meanwhile has her own gay panic over at her regular table, and spends the next hour staring blankly at her textbook rather than studying, all because the pretty barista smiled at her.
Namaari wears glasses sometimes. Raya may have made an undignified noise the first time she sees them (but she will vehemently deny if asked).
Benja is friendly with Namaari since she's been a regular for quite a while. When he sees the heart eyes being sent her way by Raya, he is delighted, and promptly becomes Sisu's co-conspirator.
All their scheming amounts to nothing, because to their despair, they are dealing with two useless gays.
Raya notices how serious Namaari always seems, and tries to say something funny every time she takes her order. When Namaari finally gifts her with not only a smile, but a cute hair-tuck-behind-the-ears, Raya is flying high for the rest of the day.
Namaari only appears so serious because she is trying not to embarrass herself in front of Raya.
Raya likes to study in the cafe herself, after closing hours. One day, Namaari seems to be working very intensely on an essay, and has forgotten to leave at closing time. Instead of kicking her out, Raya simply makes them both coffee and they start to study together.
Not long after, they find themselves talking more than studying.
Namaari finally finds within herself the ability to be smooth, and asks Raya out to dinner. Raya spills coffee everywhere in surprise, but they finally go out on an actual date.
Sisu and Benja are relieved at last.
Why is it always ‘queer people are projecting their identities onto characters’ and never ‘straight people are presuming that their identity is the default’?
i love him

The cis are all like "But won't children be confused???" but every interaction I've ever had with a child who didn't know what to call me has gone verbatim exactly like this:
"Why are you wearing a dress?"
"Because I'm a girl."
"Okay. Do you like Minecraft?"
