Russian Grammar: The Genitive Singular Case - Negation

нет + genitive case expresses absence or lack of something

example: в кухне нет стола (the kitchen does not have a table)

Forming the Genitive Case: Masculine and Neuter Nouns

for masculine and neuter nouns, add -а or -я

examples:

стол –> стола

стул –> стула

кресло –> кресла

зеркало –> зеркала

общежитие –> общежития

кафетерий –> кафетерия

Forming the Genitive Case: Feminine Nouns

for feminine nouns, replace the final -а with -ы

examples:

лампа –> лампы

картина –> картины

replace a final -я  or -ь with -и

examples:

кухня –> кухни

кровать –> кровати

мебель –> мебели

and follow spelling rule #1!

example:

книга –> книги
