How things have changed. Daegu is one of Korea's conservative and homophobic strongholds. Last year Daegu Pride was obstructed and subjected to homophobic hate crime. Police did little to help.

A court has already rejected the Christian right's injunction application to block Daegu Pride. Mayor Hong argues that Daegu Pride's occupation of the road is "illegal" and that citizens' "right to passage" should take precedence, has vowed to demolish the festival.

Daegu police, on the other hand, have promised to protect the festival and will assist with car/bus detours. It stated that the festival is in accordance with relevant laws and that freedom of assembly is guaranteed by the constitution. Will ensure no human or material damage.

Wow, Daegu (South Korea) went from not protecting Daegu Pride in 2018 the way they should've to receiving education sessions on Queer culture and becoming public allies and vowing to protect Pride from then on and doing exactly so every single year culminating in this year when their hobgoblin of a mayor tried to destroy Pride, and now even protesting in favor of Pride? Growth.

It's important to note that the courts also supported Pride and the mayor publicly threatened the police chief, yet the police still went to protect and support Pride.
