You’re more likely to die driving to an amusement park than dying at one. FINAL DESTINATION 3 (2006) dir. James Wong
I would like to applaud Dan Gilroy for low-key including a “Donnie Darko” sequence in “Nightcrawler” without ANYONE noticing. If you know “Donnie Darko” you know what that scene is about. You don’t see the plane, but you HEAR it. The plane might be the plane whose engine later comes crashing down in his attic. But it might just be a big metaphor that something bad is about to happen. You know, directors speak a language in pictures.
There is absolutely no plausible reason as to why Lou would look up the sky at night after just having watched a burning car other than this being a DD reference (or an airport nearby but then again WHY would a director choose to include such a senseless sequence that has nothing to do with the actual plot). This cinematographic moment wouldn’t make any sense unless you know of Jake’s other movies. Besides, Donnie’s conscience is Frank. The only one conscious in Nightcrawler is Frank. Donnie Darko is used as a Halloween movie. Nightcrawler got released October 31, 2014, on Halloween.
That is why, kudos Dan, you really did it.
