after the strike, the older manhattan newsies are *ruined*. like, comatose, barely awake, exhausted to the CORE. and the younger newsies are SO full of energy like 'YAYY WE DID IT' and the older newsies can only respond with 'ough' before they collapse onto a table at jacobi's. some of the older newsies have taken to sleeping in the same beds at the lodge because it helps them sleep easier. after jack moves to be with davey working in pulitzer's office, race and albert take over the manhattan newsies, trying to keep the morale up while barely keeping it together themselves. when albert suddenly breaks down in tears trying to get the younger newsies to just please listen to him, the only thing race really knows to do is hug him as tight as he can and try to kiss his cheek as inconspicuously as possible.

of course, it doesn't go unnoticed. it creates tradition and openness within the younger newsies; they feel comfortable crying in front of each other for the first time, and often kiss each other on the cheek or forehead to cheer each other up. when jack comes to visit and he finds such a supportive environment, led by race and albert holding hands and wearing steel promise rings, he's spellbound.

he can't believe that race and albert brought this about.

he's so proud of them because now they can finally be themselves.

Davey needs a breath of fresh air.

He travels up to the roof of the building, taking the stairs instead of the elevator becuase the last thing he wants right now is to feel nauseous.

His chest feels tight, his eyes are sore.

Maybe it's not worth it.

He reaches the roof, opening the door and feeling the cool breeze on his wet cheeks as he glanced around.

He sees another figure on the roof- he's not alone.

Who else would be out here at this time of night?

When Jack hears the door to the roof open, he turns. He doesn’t whip around in surprise, he's far too tired. He turns, almost lethargically.

The figure has the same curls and chiseled nose as David Jacobs. Even in the dark of the night, it's clear he’s been crying. His shoulders are drawn up near his ears and his hands are wringing an invisible towel, trembling slightly.

His voice carries on the wind: ‘Jack?’

He replies, hoping his voice carries the same way: ‘David?’

It's like a Western standoff. The moon slinks behind a cloud. The stars toss beautiful shadows across Davey’s cheeks, shiny with tears.

‘Come here.’ Jack says softly, gesturing to the view. ‘Look.’

Davey begins to walk over, stumbling a little over his own feet. He looks out at the view- it's beautiful. Windows shine like stars, cars flow on the streets like rivers of lights and electricity. Electricity flows through Davey’s veins. Jack’s shoulder touches his.

The sleeves of Jack’s hoodie are drawn up, and his hands dangle over the edge of the building. Constellations of scars and freckles litter his arms. The scars: methodical, patterned, they are buildings, they are cars. The freckles: tossed haphazardly across Jack’s skin, they are dappled light, they are stars.

Davey always had a bit of a thing about stars.

‘Are you alright, Dave?’ Jack asks the city skyline.

'I'm…’ Davey sighs towards the bank building. ‘I’m alright. Better now that I’m chatting to you. Better now that I’m getting some fresh air.’

Jack hums, slipping a hand around Davey’s shoulders.

‘The city’s beautiful at night, iddnit?’

‘It reminds me of you.’

pip knowing that you saw this video and thought 'pidge needs to see this it's just like that dumb au he came up with about davey having the worst cat in the world' means everything to me. please take this davey's terrible cat au snippet as repayment; i decided it was way too specific to my own sense of humour for anyone to actually enjoy and so i nixed it from the actual fic but i still have a soft spot for it:

“Golly-Gee-” Jack can’t even finish the name without snorting through his nose. “Jesus, Davey. Seriously?”

“What’s wrong with that?” Davey shrugs, looking a touch put-out. “Golly-Gee’s a good name! It’s fun. Isn’t that right, little miss? Little miss Golly-Gee!”

Gollum perks up at the baby-voice – somehow still retaining all her dignity even so – and meows loud and proud, her flinty eyes warming into two soft amber glows.

“That’s right.” Davey nods to himself. “Miss Golly-Gee. My special kit-tee.”

“Please don’t.”

Davey shoots him a playful look from the corner of his eye. Slowly, he begins to rock Gollum back and forth, jostling her as if she were dancing.

“Miss Golly-Gee, from NY-Cee,” he sing-songs, “the kitty who has a Ph-Dee.”

“PhD in what?” Jack challenges with a raised brow and far too much fondness.

“Seismolo-gee.” Davey says with a smug smile, not even missing a beat.

"Jack," David's voice rings softly, laughing as quietly as he can, his arm linked with Jack's. "We- hah- we've been walkin' for years. Let me kiss you?"

They're a little over halfway back to Jack's apartment, a small one-bedroom he was able to scrounge up enough money for, now that he's working for The World. It's nothing fancy, and it's not in a good part of town, but it's home.

It's become somewhat of a home to Davey, too, but that's just another perk, Jack thinks.

"We're almost there," Jack says with a grin, then gasps as David stumbles- he nearly falls over, but he rights himself and laughs, which causes Jack to roll his eyes fondly. "You really can't handle your alcohol, can ya, Mouth?"

The occasion for the night: dinner with Katherine and Sarah, mixed with top-shelf drinks and better food than Jack's had in months. Jack himself is just this side of tipsy, but he feels good, and David is at least sober enough to walk.

They only make it another block before Jack feels his arm tugged, and suddenly he's pulled into an alley by the tall brunette walking next to him. Jack grins as his back makes contact with a brick building.

"Davey," Jack laughs, running his hand through David's hair as he starts peppering kisses on Jack's face. "We're almost home, okay? Then you can kiss me all ya want, I promise."

"Fine... I just love you," David whispers, eyes bright with a wide, toothy grin- a goofy looking one, lopsided and showing his barely crooked teeth, nose scrunched up with the force of it. Not the practiced, picture-perfect smile Jack has come to know and love. "Did you know that?"

Jack's heart soars, and he can't help but chuckle. They're in public, and they have to be quiet, but hearing David say those words so plainly? It makes Jack's head swim. "I love you too," He murmurs, leaning up and brushing the tip of his nose to David's. Finally, he presses a soft kiss to David's lips, and David laughs into it, giddy and high-pitched and perfect.

After a few more drunken, messy kisses, David and Jack walk the final seven minutes home. Maybe David will feel humiliated in the morning, maybe David will regret acting so loosely, so freely. Maybe David will feel like he's too much.

But Jack will be there regardless, and take as much David as David allows himself to show.

if I wrote a modern au in an apartment complex centred around javey and ralbert (but obv featuring most of the named newsies + Kath and maybe Sarah if I ever watch 92sies) would anyone read it...... I'm not talkin oneshots im talkin sink my whole life into this fic .... any takers? (im doing it anyway)

here is your daily reminder that Racetrack Higgins is on no accounts stupid.

It's a pretty common thing to see Race as the dumbass of the group, comedic relief or generally not taken seriously. Don't get me wrong- Race is a hot mess. But he's a smart hot mess.

You think Jack was leading the strategy of Manhattan? I love Jack but you saw him organising and strategising the strike -he was struggling. Yet Manhattan is still one of the more powerful cities, how? Race.

Race who figured out how to manipulate his way into Spot Colon's good graces so he could worm his way into a selling spot at the sheepshead races -guaranteed foot traffic, plus idiots who are either winning money or think they will. They can and will spare a penny for a paper. That is a good spot. One of the better ones in the city.

And you think Race is unaware of that? NO. He did that entirely on purpose. He knows Brooklyn's economy is doing a little better than Manhattans, he knows the factors of a good spot and he knows the angles he can offer.

Race is often known for winning every game thrown at him, you think he can do that without strategy? People who don't characterise him as smart are blatantly mischaracterising him.

Race wants to be known as dumb. He wants to be underestimated. It gives him infinitely better odds. Nobody pays attention to the 'dumb twink with no common sense' they turn their heads towards heavy hitters like Spot. He plays it up, he knows damn well what he's doing but he does it anyways.

Usually it's fun and he gets a kick out of the adrenaline. But the best part is people dismiss him. And Race is always playing the long game.

So anyways this has been your PSA that Racetrack Higgins is in fact smart and incredibly strategic.
