"Wherever You Are On Your Journey To The Microcosmos, The Odds Are High That You'll Run Into A Diatom.

"Wherever you are on your journey to the microcosmos, the odds are high that you'll run into a diatom. They're both abundant and easy to spot because of the shells they encase themselves in. The results are beautiful, exacting geometries that create a living kaleidoscope in the microcosmos. Even if you lived your entire life without ever seeing a diatom, without ever hearing the word "diatom", you would still be living a life that's shaped by them... all the way down to the oxygen you breathe, thanks in no small part to their outsized contribution to the world's photosynthesis."

Punctelia reddenda

This gorgeous foliose lichen grows in rosettes up to 6 cm in diameter. The upper surface is gray-green to yellow-green with white, punctiform (point or dot like) pseudocyphella which turn into soralia which produce granular or nodular soredia. The lower surface is black toward the center and lightens to brown near the rounded margins of the overlapping lobes. P. reddenda grows on mossy tree trunks and rock in Africa, Macaronesia, North and South America, and Europe.

hi- quick question since I know you're someone who's written several papers- Do you know if you/other people who have written scientific papers are okay with emails about questions about those papers?

I'm someone who studies hyenas- amateurishly -and papers about extinct species of hyenas are really interesting to me but I can't exactly digest them very well because I don't understand the words being used. Like, what in heavens names is a 'metaconid' what does this mean!!!!!

In general authors are happy to receive such questions, but might not have enough time to give you the answer you are looking for. Still, always worth reaching out.

A metaconid is a part of a molar. But I understand this is just an example among of the general issue you are trying to illustrate. What I have learned from years of reading unfamiliar jargon, and listening to podcasts like The Tetrapod Zoology Podcast that use jargon with reckless abandon, is that in general either (a) the words that are encoded in jargon aren't *that* important to understand the grand themes of what is being discussed, or (b) their meaning can be deduced based on context cues. When I come across one that is key but really cannot be deduced, I will google it, and often Wiktionary or similar will have an answer.

The more you read, the more familiar you will get with the jargon, and the less you will need to google or ask. So, I encourage you to read broadly, and chase those interests!

As you're a proper phd scientist who made it through the gauntlet of higher education, I then assume that you have done some classes that have landed you in a fly lab or two. Do you happen to have a favorite Drosophila melanogaster mutation? Mine is apterous because they're flies who cant do the one thing they're named for (they can't fly).

I managed to avoid the fly labs, but I had amazing lectures by the inimitable Dr Vernon French during my bachelors at the University of Edinburgh about evo-devo and Drosophila. No better way to develop a deep fascination with HOX genes and other transcription factors. Off the top of my head, I think Bithorax is pretty nifty.

A New Species Of African Legless Skink, GenusΒ AcontiasΒ Cuvier, 1816 β€œ1817” (Squamata: Scincidae)

A new species of African legless skink, genusΒ AcontiasΒ Cuvier, 1816 β€œ1817” (Squamata: Scincidae) from Serra da Neve inselberg, south-western Angola

Mariana P. Marquesa, Diogo Parrinha, Arthur Tiutenko, et al.

ABSTRACT

During a recent survey of the Serra da Neve inselberg in south-western Angola, a population of legless skinks of the genusΒ AcontiasΒ was found. Only three species of this genus have been recorded for the country so far – A. occidentalis,Β A. kgalagadiΒ andΒ A. jappi. Using an integrative approach and combining molecular and morphological data we found that the Serra da Neve population represents a new species, closely related to species such asΒ A. percivaliΒ and some members of theΒ A. occidentalisΒ species complex. In this paper, we describe this population as a new species,Β Acontias mukwandoΒ sp. nov.Β and provide brief comments on its conservation and biogeography.

When I was in the hospital, they gave me a big bracelet that said ALLERGY, but like. I'm allergic to bees. Were they going to prescribe me bees in there.
