headcanon that started as a joke and is now too elaborate for its own good:

for various reasons, not the least of which is the anniversary of the KaibaCorp takeover and Gozaburo’s death, Kaiba does not care to make an occasion out of his birthday. so what if he’s a year older? entropy is irreversible, no one escapes the arrow of time, etcetera. only nerds care about this

But one year, with Mokuba’s help, Yugi tries to take Kaiba out for a surprise (and very low-key) birthday dinner, but Kaiba catches wind of it about five minutes before Yugi arrives (Yugi sent a snapchat from the subway and Kaiba’s internal alarm bells immediately started to ring) and he fucking vanishes. just nopes out. his NOT-FRIEND??? on his BIRTHDAY? absolutely the fuck not! when Yugi and Mokuba get to Kaiba’s office, it’s empty. there is only an abandoned folder of marked-up duel disk schematics on the desk and a flurry of confused messages on the KaibaCorp internal chat channels, leaving a breadcrumb trail of fleeting, cryptid-like Kaiba sightings throughout the KaibaCorp campus (marketing intern: hey Kaiba just told me this press release needs more dragons? how do I do that, it’s a press release?) With these clues in hand, they find him an hour later, sitting under a desk in the R&D department with his laptop, and like the ungracious loser he is, he bitches for ten minutes before Mokuba makes him go out for birthday dinner.

next year, Yugi is prepared for Kaiba to refuse birthday dinner - Mokuba gives him a key card that lets him search most of KaibaCorp, and access to Kaiba’s calendar a week in advance - and Kaiba is prepared for Yugi’s preparations. he filled his calendar with fake meetings. his three assistants have each been told something different about his ~REAL~ schedule for the day. However, he leaves Yugi two (2) clues: a math problem, which is a red herring that takes Yugi to the R&D department again (Kaiba isn’t dumb enough to hide in the same place twice, which is what he wants me to think, which is why he’s probably there – ) and a word problem, which leads Yugi to the legal department, where Kaiba is on a conference call in a broom closet. it takes Yugi two hours and 43 minutes to find him. Kaiba, recognizing that the jig is up and Yugi rose to the challenge as usual, grudgingly goes out to birthday dinner.

the same thing happens the year after that, and the year after THAT, to the point that Kaiba’s birthday is no longer just “Kaiba’s birthday” but the Annual Hunt for Kaiba, a non-lethal Greatest Game where both of them start making preparations weeks in advance and Mokuba flips a coin to figure out whose side he’s on THIS year. Kaiba has handicaps like “you can’t leave KaibaCorp, you can’t take the elevators, you can’t make any of the interns lie for you” and he crashes the chat channels to prevent people from leaking his hiding place and Joey and Tristan have kidnapped Mokuba at least once to blackmail him into putting trackers in Kaiba’s coats but Kaiba knows they did it so he kept a change of clothes hidden in his office but Yugi flipped Roland a week before the Hunt so he knows what the new outfit looks like and on and on and ON, to ever-greater levels of scheming, and by Year 5 some new employee is like “hey… I think the boss just rappelled past the window” bc someone leaked Kaiba’s hiding place on the 11th floor and Yugi’s on the way and someone else is like “oh it’s his birthday” and the new guy is like ……?????????

Anyway, that’s how Kaiba’s birthday stops being a miserable anniversary of bad shit and instead becomes an advanced, high-stakes cat-and-mouse game of hide-and-seek with Yugi & Friends that he somehow loses every year, after which he is dragged out to birthday dinner. He claims to hate the whole thing (what a waste of time!!!) but when he sends Yugi a text in July asking for this year’s handicaps, that’s when Yugi fucking knows he’s lying. got ‘im

"Wait," Twilight said slowly. His brain felt like it was rattling in his skull. He wanted to check the sky and earth around him to make sure that everything was still in place: the sun was where it was supposed to be, the mountains weren't walking around, that the fish weren't flying and the birds weren't swimming. "Say that again."

Warriors stared at him. He looked a little confused but that could have been leftover from the battle. Maybe that's all this was. Someone was concussed. Him or Warriors, Twilight wasn't sure yet. It had been a big explosion. "I'm twenty-two," he repeated slowly.

Maybe they were both concussed. "No, you ain't."

"Ain't ain't a word," Warriors retorted automatically. He paused. Cocked his head. He would have kept going in that direction and ended up in the dirt if Time hadn't gently righted him again. "...wait."

"I think they're both delirious," Legend said flatly. "We need to find Hyrule."

"They're not delirious," Time said, barely audible over Wild's frantic apologizing. Twilight didn't think Wild should have been apologizing, anyway. The last thing Twilight saw before those bomb barrels exploded was Warriors grinning and waving his fire rod around. "Just stupid. Captain, please stop moving. I need to see your head."

"Warriors just said he was twenty-two," Legend said. He gently pushed Wild away so he could look Twilight over. Twilight would have protested if Wild hadn't just moved to Twilight's other side to resume fussing. "He's something, all right."

"Yeah," Warriors said drolly. "Twenty-two. Ow!"

The right side of Warriors's head was bright red with blood. He had seen been grinning when the bomb barrels blasted them through the air. He had to be concussed.

"Don't be a baby," Time said, but Twilight saw him gently stroke the non-bloody parts of Warriors's head. "I swear you're more childish at twenty-two than you were at twenty."

"That's because you were a child when I was twenty," Warriors said. He flinched away from Time's probing fingers. "I'm fine. Let's get up and look for the others."

"You're covered in blood," Legend said. He didn't look away from where blood was matting Twilight's thick hair. "And delirious."

"And concussed," Twilight added.

Wild paused and stared at all three of them. "I'm lost. How old is Captain supposed to be?"

"Not twenty-two," Twilight said.

"Ancient," Legend said.

"Hey!" Warriors said.

Time sighed and pressed a bandage behind Warriors's ear. "He isn't concussed or delirious. He is twenty-two. Legend, is Twilight concussed?"

"I'm twenty-three," Twilight said blankly.

"Yeah, I think he is," Legend said.

"You aren't twenty-three," Wild said.

"I'm not?"

"Legend, please bandage the wound. Wild, give them some space."

Legend scoffed but grabbed the bandage Time held out to him. "I think we need more than bandages. They're both delirious."

"Neither is delirious. They're just idiots."

Warriors leaned away from Time's hands again. Time grabbed him and pulled him back. Warriors scowled at him. "Respect your elders, old man."

"Wait, what?" Wild scratched at his head. "Maybe I'm concussed."

"Oh Spirits," Twilight said in horror. "Am I Warriors's elder? I can't be older than Warriors!"

When Warriors paused to stare at him, Time took advantage to finish cleaning and bandaging his head. "Wait. How old do you think I am? Twilight. Hold old do you think I am?"

"You're older than Twilight, I know that much," Legend dismissed.

Wild frowned and carded his fingers through Twilight's hair. "There was gray on your muzzle when I first saw you."

"What?"

"Why does everyone think that I'm older than Twilight?"

"Incredibly delirious."

"Incredibly stupid," Time sighed.

Concussed. That had to be it. That was the only explanation. The trees were where they were supposed to be, they sky was where it was supposed to be. The only thing that wasn't where it was supposed to be was the blood, so that meant concussion. That had to be it.

"So wait," Wild said slowly. "If Warriors is Time's big brother and Warriors is younger than Twilight... does that mean Twilight is older than Time?"

Twilight whimpered and closed his eyes. They had to be concussed. If they weren't, then by the Spirits, he was going to grab that fire rod and find some more bomb barrels. A concussion might help at this point.

"Wild?"

"Yeah?"

"Shut up."

Danny doesn't have the best spatial awareness, you'd think he would given his bout as a vigilante, but his rogues all had the convenient ability of setting off his ghost sense and letting him know when to turn on his awareness.

So when he was taken in by Bruce Wayne in Gotham, far away from any ghosts or portals, he just didn't have any reason to be on guard. It worked well for him since his vigilante days were over and he could put all his focus on school again.

But you see, when he was first taken in, it was just him and his foster brother Tim staying at the manor.

Fast forward to now, Danny gets home from school to find not only Bruce waiting at the table for dinner, but a kid who looks surprisingly like Bruce??? The kid is small, rude and trying to be threatening in a way Danny doesn't really see as such, like the kid is like 8 how much could they really do???

Turns out a lot.

After Danny and Tim sat down and the introductions were made, Bruce filled them in on the situation that was Damian. Tim seemed to take it as a new puzzle, looking to Damian and Bruce periodically as if he could get answers simply by staring. Danny took it in stride, it isn't that unusually for a rich guy to have secret flings that result in children down the line.

Dinner was in full swing when it happened, there had been some bantering the entire time and many threats of bodily harm coming from Damian which weren't met with as many reprimands as Danny assumed it should. A distinct thunk sound was heard after a particularly harsh threat and Danny looked over to see a knife now embedded in Tim's chair where his head once was.

Before he could react, Bruce was standing with a sharp reprimand and Danny collided harshly with his chair as a new knife embedded itself in his shoulder. He cried out in shock, it has been over a year since his last ghost fight and honestly he forgot how much that hurts!

Aka, Bruce and Dick are forced to take Damian's threats more seriously when the civilian Danny is in the crossfire instead of just the trained vigilante Tim.

There are no more heroes.

Well, okay. Rewind a bit.

Danny has been doing the hero thing for a while now. He’s had a big reveal; everyone has accepted him (including his parents), the GIW disbanded, the Anti-Ecto acts repealed, and generally, everything is going great. Some of the A-Listers are even training as junior ghost hunters to help give him a break from his rogues! (Being Ghost King makes things hectic sometimes, and he just needs the extra help. Sue him!)

The point is, literally nothing is wrong with Danny Phantom’s afterlife.

And then Valerie Gray, the Red Huntress, disappears in front of his eyes.

Danny is baffled! She’s just…gone! Valerie just popped out of existence, like she was never there. But no matter how hard he searches in the Ghost Zone, he can’t find her soul anywhere. His core isn't broken in grief. So she’s not dead. Which is good. So then, where is she?

Some of the others come forward with ideas on how to find her. A few ghosts volunteer to go out into the mortal realm, an area Danny had declared off-limits, to see if she was out there. Danny approves it. He rounds up some of the friendlier (i.e., discreet) ghosts and Amity Parkers and demolishes the outside travel ban.

So everyone spreads out, looking for their dear frenemy and teammate. But it becomes apparent very quickly that something is wrong with the rest of the world.

There are no more heroes.

Every single living superhero on the face of the Earth has just…vanished. Villains are running amok; the countries are in chaos! Some aliens are invading Earth, mythical deities are trying to take over, and society is crumbling to the ground. Everything is on the brink of collapse.

Well, Danny was still there. And so were his people. They were pretty spread out, so could they just…take up the mantles? He also knew where to find the souls of dead heroes in the Zone; surely they wouldn't mind coming out of retirement for a little bit, especially if they couldn't die again. Oh! And that skeleton army leftover from Pariah Dark's reign might be useful in repelling those invading forces.

Honestly, there were more than enough hands to go around! And with the heroes gone, Danny didn't mind letting everyone out for a little break, as long as they followed his rules. They wouldn't stop the search for the other heroes, but hopefully, when they found them, the heroes wouldn't mind Danny's intervention too much. :)

In other words:

Someone fucks up, and all of Earth's living heroes are either wished out of existence or are whisked away to some far-off realm where Danny hasn't checked yet. In the attempt to figure out what's going on, Danny lets the dead run amok over the Earth as they search for clues. The skeleton army repels the invading armies, the souls of dead heroes deal with the world leaders, and his rogues and other Amity Parkers set up shop in place of famous heroes, trying to get the cities under control again.

Basically, they just do their best to keep everything from imploding until the Justice League and others are back.

(And why is it that Danny hasn't disappeared? Well, whatever caused everyone to go poof! only affected living heroes. Anyone heroes that were dead in the first place, or even just half-dead, stayed behind.)

FEMC IN P3R - 9

THE GREAT SEAL - FINAL BATTLE

This is the “What if” ending of P3R.

AND…

Danny has found a small-ish floating island in the Zone that isn't claimed by anyone. Dibs.

He starts altering it, and finds out that for ghosts it's like, super easy. He's literally just grabbing bits of ecto and forming it into what he wants, like putty.

He takes inspiration from his favorite Animal Crossing save, and shapes this floating island to be a place for him to just...go chill.

He names it the same thing he named his Animal Crossing island; Potato.

Danny loves Potato Island. It's his new favorite place to go to unwind.

The blob ghosts like his little ecto lakes and ponds, and will take the form of random fish to play in them. Some of them like to pretend to be caught when he goes "fishing", and are very proud when he takes photos with them and tells them what a big catch they are.

There's his house, based on the Animal Crossing one he designed, and there's a few other empty ones as well.

There's shops, based after the ones on his islands, that have no wares and no one to run them.

But that's fine, this is all just so he can relax.

Except one day, a ghost he hasn't met before asks if they can have one of the houses. That in return, they'll run one of the shops.

Danny agrees! He was getting kind of lonely anyways, and he's not on the island all the time.

Then another ghost asked. Then another.

Now his little project island is a bustling avenue of shops and locals, with celebrations for Ghost holidays he's never heard of planned out, and a small city council to gather up concerns and bring them to his attention if the city council can't resolve them.

Usually it's infrastructure, since no one but Danny can make alterations to the island. The political stuff stays firmly in the hands of the elected officials.

Potato Island is a small, peaceful hub of trade and Danny is Very Proud.

Meanwhile, the Justice League Dark is very happy that there's an interdimensional, peaceful trading village in the Infinite Realms that they can do their shopping at with ease.

The locals like to barter, which is ideal for Magic Users, and Potato Island (wild name but whatever) is protected by a very powerful spirit, so JLD members don't have to worry about being attacked while there.

Billy, though; Billy has a whole other reason to seek Potato Island out; he needs a place to live as a human. He can open his own portals and go back to Earth, and he's not stupid, he knows not to eat food from the Realms, but he's...a little tired of being homeless.

As Captain Marvel, everyone thinks he's an adult and that he has a secret base to live in.

But as Billy, who no one in the hero community knows, he's been living on the streets, and he wants security.

So the next time he goes to Potato Island, he explores it, searching for the Island's guardian; Phantom.

He has a favor to ask.

My favorite hobby is making Yosuke uncomfortable
