you know, i don’t usually care when ppl dislike something i enjoy, but when people call mob psycho 100’s art style ugly or say that the aesthetic is what keeps them from starting or continuing the series, i think my heart breaks a little bit. mp100 is such a good example of what happens when you just go out there and create with sincerity. the mob psycho 100 manga (and really all of ONE’s work) is an incredible study in visual storytelling, paneling, page composition, etc, and ONE has a really amazing sense of how to boil a visual down to its essentials. realistic rendering is definitely an admirable skill, but in comics, it isn’t even close to being as important as communicating a story. ONE’s visuals may not be as realistic or cute or pleasing to the eye as the industry standard, but they’re creative, evocative, expressive, atmospheric, downright terrifying at times, heart wrenchingly sincere at others. not to mention the story itself is so well written and thoughtfully crafted and soothing like a balm.
and the anime oh my god, the anime is like… pure joy. pure creative joy. so many different talents brought on to the show and given complete freedom, so many different mediums of animation utilized, so much love for the source material poured into every frame. the one punch man redraw/anime are stunning too, but there’s something about the way that studio bones honed in on exactly what makes ONE’s art so charming and evocative and funny and scary and good and then put their own creative spin on it to make it into something new without losing sight of ONE’s original vision, instead of remaking it to fit the industry standard that just… man. you can’t even compare the two. every second of mp100 is like comfort food. wholesome and indulgent and just as delicious the seventh time you enjoy it as it was the first.
i’m not really one to recommend ppl to watch something that they don’t want to, if something just isn’t your cup of tea, then why force yourself? but… i make an exception for mob psycho 100. even if it looks like nothing that interests you, i recommend giving it a shot. especially if you’re a creator of any kind. it’ll make you question how you judge media, it may even make you question just what is most important to you in developing your own art. and even if it does none of these things, even if you dislike the series, there’s still something to be said for the simple courage and ambition that ONE had to just put himself out there and create, regardless of whether his art met a certain aesthetic standard. it’s really heartwarming to see how he’s been rewarded for it. and looking at the difference between the early days of one punch man and the final chapters of mob psycho, it’s pretty clear that “learn by doing” works. ONE’s scribbles have touched so many people’s hearts, inspired the absolutely gorgeous work of art that is the mp100 anime, inspired many other burgeoning artists to be braver and more ambitious. if nothing else, i hope you watch/read the series and walk away from it feeling like, “i could do that.”
and if none of this applies to you, then, well… maybe just don’t rain on people’s parades with snide comments about the art style. if mp100 teaches us anything, it should probably be to encourage artists rather than to put them down and commend people who have the courage to try something new.

HONESTLY Rakuzan was probably the most fleshed out team character-wise besides Seirin and technically Teiko. We got to know all 5 starters of Rakuzan relatively through basically 1 season in the anime and they all have strong characterization. They’re all really strong personalities with entertaining character dynamics just as engaging as the Seirin Starters (imo).
With the “Real Akashi” taking over at the end of the original series, following the team in their second year with this “new” Akashi could be explored. Not only that there could be exploration into the effect of them losing the finals and how it impacts the team.
Lastly since Mayuzumi and Higuchi both graduated, this allows the introduction of a new character to fill the fifth starter role or even introduce the audience to the rest of the team. Akashi won the last damn character poll so this would undoubtedly be well received.
Picking up from the PURE POTENTIAL of Vorpal Swords and incorporating a Time Skip, this Sequel would focus on the Generation of Miracles + Kagami YEARS later all becoming members of Japan’s National Basketball Team much in the same vein of all the coaches from the original series.
Without a doubt those 7 were some of the most liked characters from the show and to have them reunite on a team for more than a rushed as fuck streeball game could explore such INTERESTING team dynamics, especially YEARS after they all competed in high school tourneys.
Like in the series/movie have the “substitutes” either be Takao, Wakamatsu and Hyuuga again or switch it up with other characters (personally i think Takao NEEDS to be around regardless of the lineup) so its not a GoM OD lovefest. This also allows WORLDWIDE traveling for the group to have them compete against other teams from other countries across the WORLDDDDDD - IMAGINE THE DIVERSITYYYY. And of course America’s team has to be the villain because they always are.
I would suggest skipping ahead to Kuroko and Kagami’s third year with those two in more leadership roles on the team. It’d be sad to see the second years have graduated but likely they would cameo and Riko could probably still be the coach.
To switch it up further I think the introduction of first and second year players as the main characters filling Kuroko and Kagami’s original roles could bring a fresh perspective to the legacy of the team down the line. Kind of an obvious and bland choice if it just picked up after the end of the series or even after Extra Game so a sizeable time skip would do the narrative well. There were even a couple of characters introduced at the end of the manga who could easily be the new main characters. Plus a seasoned version of all the different teams is a fresh take on a formula that already worked. Im thinking this would be the same vibe as Season 3 of Digimon Fusions - all the main characters are around, theyre just not the focus.
Im unsure of the potential popularity of this project because outside Imayoshi and Kasamatsu-SENPAIIIIII and maybe Miyaji? the rest of the team wasnt in depth explored in the original series (Okamura was a gag character and Higuchi doesnt even really exist honestly). The focus COULD be streetball focused tho since that was their purpose for forming. Straying away from the organized side of things would put the whole series in a new view with familiar characters tackling a new-ish venture.
It could take place after their defeat by Jabberwock and could be a learning experience tournament of redemption for them. They clearly arent very streetball savvy and this could be their arc to LEVEL UP - JUST THINK OF THE HAIKYUU LEVELS OF RELATABILITY!!!!
OKAY THIS ONE IS REALLY OUT THERE BUT HEAR ME OUT. Setting: the year after the end of the original series aka “Second Year” for the former first years. Ogiwara now wants to get back into basketball so he joins his school’s team as a first year. THEN you have Nishijima returning to Japan (because his dad is better n shit or whuteva) and the basketball scene where he CONVENIENTLY attends the SAME school at Ogiwara.
Nijimura could be not into playing basketball that much anymore despite his notoriety as a former Teiko starter. Ogiwara will hear of him, try SO HARD to convince him to join even playing him 1 on 1 until BOOM Nijimura’s in. Not only are these two strong willed characters, that set up of Uke-wara x Seme-mura IS FUJOSHI BAIT MADE IN HEAVEN.
Then their P.O.S.-team-youve-conveniently-never-heard-of goes for REDEMPTION against every damn team in the nation. ORRRRR to make shit even more interesting and add EVEN MORE FUJOSHI BAIT put them on Fukuda Sogo - THAT’S RIGHT HAIZAKI’S TEAM and task the narrative with the REDEMPTION OF HAIZAKI. Three compelling main characters, a similar but vastly different dynamic from the first series and RULE 34 FANFIC INSPIRATION FOR YEARS TO COME.
