A painting for Chapter 21 of @nebrasska-alasska's fanfic, The Secrets In Our Quills. This scene means so much to me and I've had so much fun staring out my inbox waiting for a new chapter every week. Go check out the rest of their writing, their works are unmatched! (Nebrasska I love your writing sm 😭 It's legitimately one of the best contributions to the fandom and inspired me to start drawing again)

Thanks so much, your support means the world :)) It gets me energized for more projects! I love working on these renders because they take me much longer and allow me more time to find things that look off with my drawings so I'm more satisfied in the end. I actually have a lot of experience doing traditional art like oil painting so I apply some of those concepts to my digital style.

My process on the latest render is shown below

I start out with a traditional sketch, something quick and messy to get the general gesture down. After I'm done, I upload it into my drawing program and do some tweaks so it looks more natural

Then, I draw some clean line art so there is a defined space for each color. I always draw on a tinted background (like you would when oil painting) so that the colors blend naturally with the real world

After I get the lines and color down, I merge them both into one layer and paint on top of it for specific details (it's easier for me to blend that way, much like traditional art). I use references to get the lighting down and tons of layers to make the characters fit into the environment (in this case, a photo from pinterest :D) Sometimes the raw image distracts from the characters so I blur and shade specific areas.

That's the gist of it! Again this is my first time doing a process like this digitally so I'm sure my methods will change over time.
