The Absolute Truth of the Matter
On the way to Rosenlaui, Holmes falls behind to face Moriarty alone. When it is instead Watson who encounters the Professor at the Reichenbach Falls, events take an unexpected turn.
Or: Watson does a few ridiculously courageous things and there is a crack in Holmes's lens.
The Case of the Lost Cat
Annie hesitated, nervously turning the apple in her hands, lowering her gaze. โI must tell you first,โ she mumbled, โthat I canโt pay your fee, Mr Holmes, b-but I can help in the garden, or โโ โOh, but lost animal cases are always free of charge,โ Holmes said casually, folding the newspaper and throwing it onto the floor next to his armchair. He is, as I have often stated, really a rather brilliant man.
After the Great War, Holmes and Watson are living a quiet life somewhere in Sussex. The days of great detective work lie in the past, but when a distressed young client asks them for help with finding her lost cat, Holmes and Watson have to solve a case that might turn out to be just beyond their limits.
Flowery Prose
Holmes rarely read to me, and never like this.
The Return of Dr Watson
I think of myself as a practical woman. I am proud to say that I have always been able to manage my household in the most efficient manner, purchasing only what is of good quality without requiring any unnecessary expenses. I have one possession, however, that is an exception to that rule. This is the story of how not only one but two of my tenants returned to Baker Street, and how I came to own one of Londonโs finest tea services as a result.
Mr Holmes returns. Dr Watson leaves. Mrs Hudson realises that Londonโs greatest detective might require a little assistance with winning the good doctor back.
The Adventures of the Amorous Amateur
Five times Sherlock Holmes is bad in bed and one time Watson is too.
The Heart's Desire
In which Watson learns how to make love to Sherlock Holmes.
The Adventure of the Lost Footing
โYou have been in this particular mood for months,โ Holmes stated. โYou are in pain, but worse than that, you feel useless. You would clearly be more comfortable โ and productive โ away from London. Therefore, it seems a permanent relocation is in order.โ
When Watson is no longer able to keep step with Sherlock Holmes, he expects to be left behind. As it turns out, Holmes has already devised a plan.
Of Seeing London Again
I had dreamed of London day and night, and now I had returned, but I was not home yet. It would not be until Moran was caught and I could finally reveal myself to my old friend Watson that I would be able to find a modicum of peace.
A Kinder Heart
โHolmes?โ The pipe clattered to the floor and there was tobacco scattered all around it, but it passed like a flash before my eyes because I had spun around to face whoever had entered the room. It was Watson, of course.
Starting my fanfiction journey has me realizing just how much ACD canon READS LIKE FANFICTION.
Like, what do you MEAN the two main characters are extremely fruity roommates who absolutely adore each other?
What do you MEAN Sherlock Holmes BLUSHES LIKE A LITTLE LADY WHEN WATSON COMPLIMENTS HIM?
What do you MEAN Sherlock Holmes starts out as a misogynist but is humbled by a beautiful talented girlboss outsmarting him???
What do you MEAN Holmes and Watson bicker about each otherโs taste in art, and cleanliness, and eating habits?
What do you MEAN a story ends with the escaped victim of an abusive man who kills his exes POURING ACID ON AND DESTROYING SAID MANโS FACE???
WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHERLOCK HOLMES CROSSDRESSES?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITโS WATSONโS GREATEST JOY AND PLEASURE TO SERVE HOLMES?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN WATSON IS โHERE TO BE USEDโ?????
WHAT DO YOU MEAN LESTRADE SAYS HEโS PROUD OF HOLMES AND HOLMES NEARLY CRIES?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN HOLMES AND WATSON FREQUENT THE TURKISH BATHS TOGETHER?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN HOLMES WOULD KILL A MAN FOR WATSON, AND WATSON WOULD GET SHOT TO SEE HOLMESโ LOVE????
It seems like Watson is rather used to Holmes touching him rather frequently, but I like to think that sometimes he still can get surprised (and flustered)
random thoughts
Does anyone else ever think about just how QUIET Watson is? He talks much more in later canon, but heโs mostly very silent, soaking everything in.
Maybe itโs just that he doesnโt write his own reactions very often, because he thinks that heโs less interesting to the reader than Holmes.
But Holmes mentions that Watson has a โgrand gift of silenceโ so I think heโs just a quiet guy.
It does add to the idea that Iโve built up in my head of him, that heโs this strong silent man, very stoic and very steady.
Which is a really interesting contrast to Holmes, who is constantly MOVING and TALKING. In fact, I think that it creates a conflict within both charactersโ personalities. Holmesโ mannerisms are loud and hyperactive; but heโs the one who notices things, and is the thinker. Meanwhile, Watson is a quiet listener, but heโs also the man of action. He is stubborn and passionately emotional, as opposed to Holmes who is more calm and calculating.
I literally have no clue where this whole essay came from lol
the BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY part 2 - part 1 here - there is a mention of Holmes reading Petrarch in this story and so naturally I went on a deep dive of some of the most TRAGIC AND ROMANTIC POETRY ABOUT DOOMED LOVE I HAVE EVER READ. BUDDY.
the 'deductions and inferences' bit I drew ages ago so it's in a different style! classic bitch moment.
One more part to come! This is in the Watson's Sketchbook series.
