Oh nothing, just making a list of a FEW things that women could STOP doing that would benefit us as a whole:
Stop shaving.
Stop wearing makeup.
Stop wearing high heels.
Stop dieting to conform to narrow body standards.
Stop engaging in beauty treatments that cause discomfort or pain.
Stop wearing restrictive clothing designed to accentuate or display your body for others.
Stop spending excessive time or money on beauty products that reinforce capitalist and patriarchal beauty ideals.
Stop apologizing for taking up space or being assertive.
Stop modifying your behavior to seem โagreeableโ or โsoft-spoken.โ
Stop internalizing blame for male violence or harassment.
Stop allowing media or advertising to define what makes you valuable or attractive.
Stop suppressing anger or passion to appear more โacceptable.โ
Stop adhering to expectations to be โnaturallyโ maternal or nurturing.
Stop avoiding leadership roles out of fear of being labeled โbossyโ or โintimidating.โ
Stop hiding your intelligence, knowledge, or ambitions to protect othersโ egos.
Stop centering romantic relationships or marriage as the main goal in life.
Stop accepting unpaid emotional labor or domestic tasks as your responsibility.
Stop supporting brands or companies that exploit or objectify women.
Stop tolerating โlocker room talkโ or other forms of sexist humor.
Stop staying silent about harassment or abuse to โkeep the peace.โ
Stop engaging in self-criticism that is rooted in societyโs standards rather than your own values.
But of course, you donโt have to stop. Make that choice if you wantโฆ Just be sure to make that choice far the fuck away from me. XOXO ๐
โRadical feminism is a perspective within feminism that calls for a radical reordering of society in which male supremacy is eliminated in all social and economic contexts. Radical feminists view society as fundamentally a patriarchy in which men dominate and oppress women.โ
Prostitution
Purchased consent is not consent, itโs coercion. Sex work is dehumanizing and traumatizing for women, and fueled by sex trafficking. The commodification of female sexuality is a mix of misogyny and capitalism.
Pornography
Prostitution on camera. See above for key points. Additionally, female sexuality should not be monetized and sold for male entertainment. The industry is rife with rape, abuse, coercion, trafficked women, drugged women, and CP. It harms not only the women involved in the videos (physically and mentally), but it also harms the viewers in the long run.
Surrogacy
Similar to prostitution and pornography in the sense that womenโs bodies become acquirable products for sale or rent. A woman's organs should not be for rent, as it creates a perverse incentive. Most surrogacy is outsourced to disadvantaged women in developing nations, where they are made to sign contracts they can't read and undergo poor treatment.
Bodily Autonomy
Understanding that a woman should have complete and utter control of her reproductive system; including abortion, birth, and sterilization. Understanding a woman should have access to informed and accurate medical care. Understanding a woman should have complete control over when and if she engages in sex with a partner. Understanding that PIV is often an unequal act.
Nuclear Family
This allows for the isolation of women, both emotionally and financially. The family unit, ideally, includes a large safety net of family and friends who assist in child rearing. Women should not be financially dependent on men, as this open the potential for abuse and difficulty leaving via power imbalance.
Capitalism
The system that allows the commodification of women and their bodies. Women shouldnโt have to sell or rent out their bodies in order to survive.
BDSM/Kink
Wherein the majority of subs are women and the majority of doms are men. Fetishization of slavery, power imbalances, rape, incest, pedophilia, and abuse. Hurting your partner does not suddenly become healthy if you can orgasm to it. Power imbalances that lead to physical and emotional abuse and trauma.
Patriarchal Religions
All holy books were written by men and serve to maintain and legitimize patriarchal power structures. Patriarchal religions falsely attribute the gift of creation to men when in reality every man on earth was molded from the flesh of women.
Postmodernism/Queer Theory
Radical feminism is based on materialism. Women are oppressed because of their biological reality, which is not subjective, subjectable to changes or personal interpretations. Postmodernism and queer theory are.
The Beauty Industry
Fills up the pockets of men who make money by ever-changing standards of female beauty. Keeps women insecure, low self-esteem, their value and self-worth forever dependent on their physical appeal (to men). Demands women change how they appear (makeup, shaving, dieting, cosmetic surgeries) to appear prepubescent (lithe, hair free, firm not soft) which is a part of what we identify as 'pedophilia culture'.
Marriage
Marriage would be described by some as the wheels on which patriarchy is carried onwards. Historically, marriage has been nothing but a transaction: a daughter, who belonged to her father, now belongs to her husband. Her reproductive labor, domestic labor, emotional labor, and physical labor all at his disposal. This is how marriage continues to work and act culturally in a majority of societies
Individualism
As opposed to class analysis. Arguably the most overlooked and hardest โโissueโโ to overcome. Itโs understandable that most women gravitate towards liberal feminism because they donโt have to analyze the reasons behind their actions, they donโt have to come to difficult and unappealing conclusions, they donโt have to feel the need to take action and stop engaging in whatever they are doing thatโs harming women as a class. Known as 'choice feminism', which affirms any choice as a personal one, despite what influenced that choice or how it may affect the female class at large (see: plastic surgery, "makeup makes me feel confident!", "I like being hurt during sex!")
Gender Critical/Gender Abolitionist
Gender is a social class applied to biology. Each individuals sex is innate, and gender is the series of roles, expectations, socialization, cultural practices, and personality traits applied to that sex. Sex is "this baby has a vulva" and gender is "so give that baby a pink blanket and a dolly". Therefore, radical feminists understand that gender is a means of oppressing women. They wish to abolish gender. This creates clashes with pieces of trans rights activism, which upholds ones gender as innate. Read more here on this topic.
The main clashing beliefs are as follows:
-Being dysphoric doesnโt automatically means trans, since transitioning is only a way of treating dysphoria, and there are many reasons someone might be dysphoric.
-Instead of โidentifying as a man/woman/nonbinaryโ, we should abolish gender altogether.
- Males remain male and females remain female, even if theyโre dysphoric/gnc. Biology is innate. Therefore, for example, a transwoman that rapes someone, is an male abuser. It is male violence.
- Males have male privilege, regardless of how they identify, because society is built upon upholding and amplifying males.
- Females will be opressed, regardless of how they identify, because society is built upon the females-as-a-resource model that holds us as sexual and reproductive resources for male pleasure and male heirs.
Radical Feminist Goals
Women's liberation via the dismantling of male power structures, and the rejection of a woman's "role" within society as a lesser class.
Ways to Achieve This
Separatism/Male Exclusion - simply deciding to center oneโs life and actions around females in all possible aspects. The keeping and protecting of female only spaces. Ultimately, this might look like a female-only society that any girl or woman could enter or leave at will.
Introspection - analyzing oneโs actions and maybe asking oneself: why do I want these things? What's drives this action? Is this the healthiest option for me, physically and mentally? Am I hurting a woman or girl if I partake in this option?
Raising Awareness - of all the issues mentioned above. Talking to women and girls about radical feminism. This is not a solution but a step towards finding or creating more solutions as a community.
Being Politically Active - political agency and action is essential for female liberation; especially concerning topics such as reproductive rights, legislation of prostitution, electing representatives ETC.
Male Reform - investing time and effort into making men aware of the issues, in the hopes that theyโll do their part for the liberation of women and do the same with their fellow men.
Childrearing - Focus on advocacy and action around raising girls and boys the same way, to begin to treat the class divide at the root. This is very difficult without full societal support.
Conclusion
Radical feminism is for female people, by female people. It's ideology goes beyond these tenets, but the ideas presented above should allow you to derive answers as to what that might be. Radical feminism is also referred to as second wave feminism, and is compatible with Marxist feminism and the original principles of intersectional feminism. Thank you for reading.
Hey everyone, Abby here with another post! Today weโre talking a bit about world-building, and specifically your worldโs intelligent species. Letโs hop right in!
Iโve made a post in the past about creating new species in your world, and hereโs what I want to start with. Within the context of this post, Iโm defining race as any variation of an intelligent species for ease of language. That in mind, you will want to have your species developed.
There are some aspects that you just have to answer questions for in order to develop. Here are some basics for you to start with:
What is the origin species?
What defines a different race? Skin color, abilities, some physical marker? Something non-physical?
What is most known about this race as a fact?
What is most known about this race as a stereotype?
Are there any common variations within this race?
For Dungeons and Dragons players, think about the Dragonborn race. Different scale colors donโt mean a different race, but they do mark different abilities.
There may be common variations in appearance, like different eye colors or heights, that donโt have any other meaning. Just regular physical variation!
Are there any skills or other characteristics specific to this race?
What distinguishes this race from other races that may exist in your world?
How much interaction is there between different races?
Are there any areas of the world that each race tends to gravitate to?
Are there different expected life spans for each race? If they are different, why?
For example! In the RPG Iโm working on, Journey to Valeria,ย there are two races in the Steerean species: shallow and Reclusive. They share a similar origin species, but different characteristics have created other aspects enough for them to be considered different races. As a result, Iโve developed them as two separate races with their own characteristics.
Go ahead and compare this to some aspects of DnD as well! The game does an awesome job of distinguishing between races and making each one unique, and I find that looking at things in context helps me a lot.
You, as the creator of this world, are also its master. What things outside of just answering questions do you think is important to know right off the bat? For one of my races, I wrote about camouflage in the environment and some elements of magic because I think those are things important to the development.
These could be topics like:
History
Associated cultures or religions
Temperaments, if applicable
Strengths and weaknesses specific to this race
And anything else that you think is important. As Iโm developing the races on Steere, Iโm thinking a lot about how different races interact with the world, how they use technology, their general lifestyles, etc.
Usually when you create a fantasy race, your goal is to make this race as well-rounded as possible. Creating an intelligent species, much less several different variations of one, can be very difficult! This is something that will take time and a lot of thought, but itโs vital to the process.
I talked about Journey to Valeriaย a bit more than I anticipated I would, but what can I say? Iโve been on a kick lately, and I like talking about the things that matter to me. If youโd like, you can follow the projectโs blog @journeytovaleriaโ to see more updates and development!

Hey everyone, Abby here with another writing post! Today weโre talking about new species and how to create them in your writing.
In many fantasy and sci-fi books, youโll hear about different species, be them humanoid or not. Often it can be hard for the average writer to create something as complex as a new species, but with a little extra effort they can really add an extra element to your story.
Do you remember, back in your first biology class, learning about taxonomic ranks? (In case you forgot: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.)ย The species is the mostย specific classification for a living thing, but it helps to know a bit of the other stuff surrounding it as well.
For example, letโs say I create the Lunaxย species. I can describe it all I want, but it helps me as an author get a clearer mental image if I say itโs in the same genus as a tiger or something like that. You can take your species and relate it to other, already-existing species to help yourself develop and create.
This goes far beyond appearance, even though appearance on its own could probably create a whole separate post. Here are some questions on characteristics to help you get started:
Is it nocturnal?
Herbivore, carnivore, omnivore?
Can it climb, fly, swim?
How fast can it move?
How fine-tuned are its senses, and which is the strongest?
Which temperatures or biomes is it found in, and why?
How long does it sleep for?
Does it have any predators?
Of course, there are so many more questions you can ask to get that development rolling, but youโll want to have a good idea of what really defines this species as you go along.
This is something you may also want to consider: what causes an increase and decrease in population.
For this youโll want to look at things like the mating process, gestation, youth development, etc. - things that go into the life cycle of the species. Like anything else, the knowledge you have here doesnโt have to be super in-depth, but it would certainly help to at least have a general idea.
What helps the population flourish, and what hurts it? How available is their specific habitat, and is that level growing, shrinking, or remaining level? What factors in the world could change the growth rate of the population? Is this species rare enough to be considered endangered by our standards?
-
Thereโsโฆ a lot that goes into creating a species, so this guide isnโt at all meant to be comprehensive. Itโs all up to you as an author, these are just some bases to help you get started!
If this post helped you out, please consider buying me a coffee over on ko-fi!
๐๐กDEALING WITH HATERS๐๐ก
๐Oh that person said this about me ๐ญThey commented rude things about me โน๏ธThey attacked me for expressing my opinions ๐ฅฒ. Girl stop it ๐ โ๏ธ Get over yourself . We need to step into our " IDAF" ERA !
๐กBEING HATED ON IS A PRIVILEGE
Being hated on means you are RELEVANT ! You are so extremely relevant because that person is taking their time off to focus on YOU rather than themselves. Only the insecure people would choose you as their target because they are threatened by you.
๐STOP PUTTING YOUR HATERS ON A PEDESTAL
Why are you putting your haters or bullies on a pedestal ? Why do their opinions outweigh your own opinions ? ๐ค Value yourself above these haters. Reassure yourself and put yourself on a pedestal. You should know you are great and you know your intention. Their words stay in your mind because you are giving them your power , precious energy and attention to them. You are giving their words more power than your own words.
๐กYOUR WORTH DOES NOT RELY ON EXTERNAL OPINIONS
You are not an opinion of someone who does not know you or care about you. Realize this and you will be free ! As I told you before in my know your worth post , your worth should not rely on external opinions, if your worth relies on external opinions , you are a slave to other people. Your worth is intrinsic, it comes from within and it is present since the day you were born.
๐JUDGEMENT IS THE GAME OF THE MISERABLE.
Haters are miserable. It is a fact. Even if it looks like they are doing better , they are not. Your hater could be the prettiest person in the world but when they look at themselves , they feel ugly. That is why people who usually bully or hate on others try to make the other person make insecure so that they can feel better about themselves. Happy people do not hate .
๐กIT IS NOT PERSONAL
It is never personal, it is not about you, it is about them.It is so important to realize that haters are always projecting.
๐NO RESPONSE IS THE BEST RESPONSE
The best response to a hater is no response. Do not give them your precious energy and time. If you show them that you are hurt by their comments , they will not feel bad for you . In fact , they will be happy because they won , they wanted your energy, time and wanted to feel they have power over you. Just be unbothered , do not give a damn about these losers. That is how you take your power back . Other people need your permission to make you feel bad about yourself, do not give them the permission.
๐กA-T-T-E-N-T-I-O-N
If someone has an issue with you and they are telling everyone except you , they do not have a real issue with you , they just enjoy the attention they get from talking about you.
๐I DONT CARE , YOU ARE YOU , I AM ME
Like our Queen Wonyoung said, if someone says something about her that is not true , she does not care . I don't care , You are You, I am me.
๐กLOVE YOURSELF
Focus on your good qualities about yourself. Love yourself. Our Queen Wonyoung said that people will give you criticism even when you do not need it , so she only gives herself nothing but love. That is how you should think too. Give yourself nothing but love.
๐ FOCUS ON YOU
Have a life. Be too busy to focus on these gremlins. If you are sitting idle and rotting in bed the whole day , of course , your brain will wonder. Have a routine. Be too focused on yourself to care about them.
๐กKNOW YOURSELF
If you know yourself and understand yourself , you will not care what other people think about you. For example , if you know you are smart and beautiful , you will not care if someone else says that you are dumb or ugly. Take it like this, you are wearing a red t-shirt , someone comes upto and says your t-shirt is blue , will you believe them ? Will you try to explain yourself to them ? Or will you just be like - oh what a dumb person and move on with your life ?
๐HAVE COMPASSION
You need to stop seeing them as a toxic , mean or evil person๐ . See them as someone who is unhealed , hurt or insecure . You do not need to be nice, kind or say anything to them. Have compassion for them and wish that they heal from whatever they are going through. Shift your energy from hurt and sadness to compassion. You will protect your peace and you will be unfazed.
๐กTHEY ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT
Does this person contribute anything to your life ? Will their opinions help you pay your bills? Will their opinions help you pass your exam ? If no , why do you care about them ? They are not that important but you are . You should take care of you and not lose yourself because of what one person or many people say about you. They do not matter. They are irrelevant. You are the main character of your life.
๐YOU ARE NOT BORN TO IMPRESS
In this world of social media , we often try to impress people who we do not even know. Always remember that YOU ARE BORN TO EXPRESS , NOT TO IMPRESS.
Sheโs spot on
something that annoys me is when media reviewers or theorists review stranger things and talk around Byler like itโs the plague. itโs either mentioned super briefly (as if itโs not an important plot point when it literally is) or they pretend those scenes are something else (will being insecure, lonely, traumatised ect). itโs honestly worrying how people dedicated to analysing shows are so quick to diminish and ignore queer plot points, especially when those plot points are vital to the characters and story. itโs dishonest journalism in service of heteronormative mind frames. theyโre either too ignorant to acknowledge queer characters or theyโre too scared to potentially upset homophobic film bros and make themselves look โinvalidโ for โmaking everything gayโ. queer stories and queer theories are just as valid as the rest. im tired of being called delusional for wanting equal representation and respect.
Me at all the wacked out lib fems on this hellsite.
casually debunking some common libfem talking points because iโm based and radpilled :33
โFeminism is about equality of the sexesโ nope! feminism is about womenโs rights and the liberation of women from patriarchy. simply just giving women the same rights as men will not solve domestic violence, rape, assault, fgm, etc.
โMen can be feminists/feminism is for everyoneโ like i said previously, feminism is about womenโs rights and liberation, this cannot be achieved if men are included into the equation. most movements need to be exclusionary to a certain extent, for example the black liberation movement, LGB liberation , fat acceptance, etc (also men only claim to be feminists so they can reap the social benefits of saying so. but the minute you criticize porn theyโll start calling you misogynistic slurs)
โmisandry is real and hurts menโ misandry isnโt even real lmao. the biggest misandrist youโll ever meet will never be able match the hatred men give us on a daily basis. hate is rape, murder, assault, fgm, honor killings, domestic violence. if โmisandryโ hurts your precious feelings then just log off. misandry simply annoys men, misogyny gets women killed.
โprostitution is empowering for womenโ this one angers me the most. there is NOTHING empowering about an industry that sees women as nothing but things to put their dicks in. there will never be enough willing sex workers to override the numerous women and little girls trapped in prostitution who are raped, beaten, and killed
My dear friends: When a librarian or teacher says "Audiobooks count as reading", we do not literally mean that audiobooks are the same as decoding visual meaning via symbols representing sounds. We mean, among other things:
Audiobooks can expose listeners to new vocabulary and forms of syntax.
Audiobooks can present listeners with long-form fictional narratives with engaging characters, interesting literary devices, and poetic turns of phrase.
Audiobooks can teach listeners new information in a long-form manner that goes into depth or wide breadth on a particular subject or subjects.
Audiobooks can help listeners' verbal comprehension skills.
Audiobooks can do all these things without presenting the same difficulties to blind, low vision, partially sighted, visually impaired, or dyslexic listeners; listeners with ADHD; listeners who experience physical difficulty with holding a book or e-reader; or listeners who are disabled in a host of other ways that a physical book or e-reader might present.
The written word is not specially imbued with magical noble worth above the spoken word, and if you think it is, you may have some ableism and/or racism to deconstruct.
If I wanted to read something that read like tropey fanfiction then I would just.. read tropey fanfiction... for free. I'm not an affluent white women who can waste money on bad books if I buy a book I want it to be good or at least enjoyable.
"If prostitution empowered women; men would be against it."
people are incapable of looking at kink through a critical lens. kinksters will spew apologia without taking a moment to consider:
*why* is โfeminisationโ considered humiliating to men?
*why* is getting off on your partner *struggling and being in pain* acceptable? โfakeโ or not?
*why* is it so predominantly femininity that is being degraded? why are women the ones who are typically victims in kink? (and yes, i am aware women perpetuate bdsm abuse too. but predominantly men are the โdomsโ in cnc, bdsm, etc. ddlg is much more prominent than whatever the reverse is.)
*why* is raceplay considered acceptable? why is โpretendingโ to hold racist ideals and getting off on them considered acceptable?
actually, why is fetishisation of ANY group acceptable if you get off to it? trans people. lesbians. POC. r@pe victims.
most importantly, *why are victims of abuse in BDSM spaces so frequently ostracised for criticising the source of their trauma/the sceneโs inability to protect them?* (i have personal experience with this one, having been banned from CPTSD and sexual assault support subreddits for critiquing kink that i was forced to partake in)
i could go on for days. a community that is โsafe, sane and consensualโ should be able to discuss these issues of abuse within the community, instead of ostracising and blaming victims.
In my time on this site, I have often seen radical feminists (of the trans-exclusionary persuasion) complain about trans women presenting themselves in ways that enforce caricatures and stereotypes of women and femininity.
My response to this, however, is: why is the full blame for this being placed on said trans women instead of on the patriarchal systems that skew everyoneโs perception of what it means to be a woman?

if thats not possible, Ruby Cruz
if that is also not possible, Hazel Callahan
if neither of those options are possible, Kit Tanthalos
if you're on a path of self-growth and self-improvement I would like to advise you to keep private about it. I'm not saying to keep it a locked secret but don't go around talking about it. I learned it the hard way that speaking freely about our plans to improve ourselves results in bringing out the worst in so many people. people who you have no reason to distrust suddenly will actually wish you ill, because your progress will intimidate them, make them feel inferior, make them face their own insecurities and desires. and the kind of energy that these people produce is the kind of energy that can be a hindrance for you without you even noticing. suddenly you'll be exposing your dreams to an emotional vampire who will, even unconsciously, try and sabotage you. you don't need to share your plans and projects: just show up with the results and it will be enough said ๐ธ

โฆ life isn't meant to be hard
โฆ i wasn't put on this earth to suffer
โฆ i don't need to push myself to the point of despair for the sake of productivity
โฆ i am the kind of person who good things happen to
โฆ i'm not cursed, good things can and will happen to me
โฆ i am extremely lucky
โฆ i am constantly receiving good news and being blessed with miracles
โฆ i deserve to rest
โฆ i deserve to take up space
โฆ it's okay to struggle and ask for help, other people also struggle, and they care about me and are happy to help
โฆ i don't need to apologize so much. i didn't do anything wrong and i have nothing to feel guilty for
โฆ it is possible for me to be healthy and live a happy life
โฆ "i can't accept this, i don't deserve it" if you don't take it, someone else will, whether they deserve it or not. if someone's offering you an opportunity, or a present, it's because they thought you deserved it, and want you to have it, so stop being silly and just take it
โฆ i'm not stuck with any identities. i can always change and become and better me. maybe i'm not athletic, but i can be. maybe i'm not organized, but i can be. i'm not stuck and i can change.
this post is a reminder to myself and others that we're allowed to take up space in this world and that we deserve to be happy just because.
we don't need to earn the good things in life by suffering and working to the point of exhaustion.
we don't need to thank people a million times for something they chose to do for us, we don't need to constantly apologize for being sad or needing help.
aren't we all human? aren't we all struggling, trying to figure life out? why is it that when it's me who needs a little help, suddenly it's burdening?
i think i have a hard time manifesting certain things, because i still see myself in a negative light, in many ways, and because, for a very long time, i believed i had to be humble, work hard, that suffering was something honorable.
i think this is something that comes with existing as a woman in this world, being so apologetic about everything, and it's something i really want to let go off.
me existing in this world as someone who does no harm to others is reason enough for me to deserve to take up space and live a happy life.
every time you compare yourself to another person you lose your power and give it to others.
be aware of your own value
the value you give to others, give to yourself multiplied!
if there is something you don't like about yourself try to change it from compassion and self-love, don't judge yourself for it, we all have the ability to change
recognize that comparing yourself with other people is something negative and prevents you from growing and evolving
you are the main character of your life, no one else, that's why it doesn't matter if you "believe" that someone else is more handsome or smarter than you, it's not, it's you, because it's your life, think about this every time you compare yourself
recognize when these thoughts come to your mind and focus in turn on something positive, something good about your day or something you like about yourself
don't compare chapter 20 of a person with chapter 3 of your life
focus on learning and not comparing yourself
turn comparison into admiration
be aware of the damage you are doing to yourself when you do this
write down everything you like about yourself and everything you would like to have or be
practice self-love every day, treat yourself with love
focus on you and your growth not on what others do
focus on what you like about yourself and not on what you don't-
recognize that you are the main character of your life, the life you are living right now is only lived by you so it doesn't matter how other people are or how they live their life, it doesn't hurt you, focus on you and your growth, you are unique and valuable you don't have to be like anyone else
some ways to practice self-love ( i will write another post on this)
forgive yourself
take care of your physical and mental health
avoid toxic people
connect to your feminine energy and make rest a priority when you need it
use positive affirmations every day
talk to yourself and treat yourself with love
do things that make you proud of you
post that i recommend you if you found this one useful ๐ค
Fantasy Guide to Building A Culture
Culture is defined by a collection of morals, ethics, traditions, customs and behaviours shared by a group of people.
Within every culture, there is a hierarchy. Hierarchies are an important part of any culture, usually do ingrained that one within the culture wouldn't even question it. Hierarchy can be established either by age, gender or wealth and could even determine roles within their society. Sometimes hierarchy can may be oppressive and rigid whilst other times, ranks can intermingle without trouble. You should consider how these different ranks interact with one another and whether there are any special gestures or acts of deference one must pay to those higher than them. For example, the Khasi people of Meghalaya (Northern India), are strictly matriarchal. Women run the households, inheritance runs through the female line, and the men of the culture typically defer to their mothers and wives. Here are a few questions to consider:
How is a leader determined within the culture as a whole and the family unit?
Is the culture matriarchal? Patriarchal? Or does gender even matter?
How would one recognise the different ranks?
How would one act around somebody higher ranking? How would somebody he expected to act around somebody lower ranking?
Can one move socially? If not, why? If so, how?
Traditions are a staple in any culture. These can be gestures or living life a certain way or to the way a certain person should look. Traditions are a personal detail to culture, they are what make it important. Tradition can dictate how one should keep their home, run their family, take care of their appearance, act in public and even determine relationship. Tradition can also be a double edged sword. Traditions can also be restrictive and allow a culture to push away a former member if they do not adhere to them, eg Traditional expectations of chastity led to thousands of Irish women being imprisoned at the Magdelene Laundries. Customs could be anything from how one treats another, to how they greet someone.
How important is tradition?
What are some rituals your culture undertakes?
What are some traditional values in your world? Does it effect daily life?
Are there any traditions that determine one's status?
Values and Opinions are the bread and butter of any culture. This is the way your culture sees the world and how they approach different life hurdles. These may differ with other cultures and be considered odd to outsiders, what one culture may value another may not and what opinion another holds, one may not. There will be historical and traditional reasons to why these values and opinions are held. Cultures usually have a paragon to which they hold their members to, a list of characteristics that they expect one to if not adhere to then aspire to. The Yoruba people value honesty, hard work, courage and integrity. Here are some questions to consider?
How important are these ethics and core values? Could somebody be ostracised for not living up to them?
What are some morals that clash with other cultures?
What does your culture precieved to be right? Or wrong?
What are some opinions that are considered to be taboo in your culture? Why?
For many cultures, the way somebody dresses can be important. History and ethics can effect how one is meant to be dressed such as an expectation of chastity, can impose strict modesty. While other cultures, put more importance on details, the different sorts of clothes worn and when or what colour one might wear. The Palestinian people (ู ู ุงูููุฑ ุฅูู ุงูุจุญุฑ ุ ูุฏ ูููููู ุฃุญุฑุงุฑุง) denoted different family ties, marriage status and wealth by the embroidery and detailing on their thoub.
Are there traditional clothes for your world? Are they something somebody wears on a daily basis or just on occasion?
Are there any rules around what people can wear?
What would be considered formal dress? Casual dress?
What would happen if somebody wore the wrong clothes to an event?
Language can also be ingrained as part of a Culture. It can be a specific way one speaks or a an entirely different language. For example, in the Southern States of America, one can engage in a sort of double talk, saying something that sounds sweet whilst delivering something pointed. Bless their heart. I have a post on creating your own language here.
Many cultures are known for different styles of dance, their artwork and crafts. Art is a great part of culture, a way for people to express themselves and their culture in art form. Dance can be an integral part of culture, such as cรฉilรญ dance in Ireland or the Polka in the Czech Republic. Handicrafts could also be important in culture, such as knitting in Scottish culture and Hebron glass in Palestine. Music is also close to culture, from traditional kinds of singing such as the White Voice in Ukraine and the playing of certain instruments such as the mvet.
The way a culture prepares or intakes or treats certain foods are important to a culture. In some cultures, there is a diet yo adhere to, certain foods are completely banned. With Jewish culture, pork is prohibited along with fish such as sturgeon, along with shellfish and certain fowl. Meat must also be prepared in a certain way and animal byproducts such as dairy, must never be created or even eaten around this meat. This is known as kosher. The way one consumes food is also important to culture. In some cultures, only certain people may eat together. Some cultures place important on how food is eaten. In Nigerian culture, the oldest guests are served first usually the men before the women. In Japanese culture, one must say 'itadakimasu' (I recieve) before eating. Culture may also include fasting, periods of time one doesn't intake food for a specific reason.
What are some traditional dishes in your world?
What would be a basic diet for the common man?
What's considered a delicacy?
Is there a societal difference in diet? What are the factors that effect diet between classes?
Is there any influence from other cuisines? If not, why not? If so, to what extent?
What would a typical breakfast contain?
What meals are served during the day?
What's considered a comfort food or drink?
Are there any restrictions on who can eat what or when?
Are there any banned foods?
What stance does your world take on alcohol? Is it legal? Can anybody consume it?
Are there any dining customs? Are traditions?
Is there a difference in formal meals or casual meals? If so, what's involved?
Are there any gestures or actions unacceptable at the dinner table?
How are guests treated at meals? If they are given deference, how so?
I don't like the term 'Writer's Block' - not because it isn't real, but because the term is so vague that it's useless. Hundreds of issues all get lumped together under this one umbrella, making writer's block seem like this all-powerful boogeyman that's impossible to beat. Worse yet, it leaves people giving and receiving advice that is completely ineffective because people often don't realize they're talking about entirely different issues.
In my experience, the key to beating writer's block is figuring out what the block even is, so I put together a list of Actual Reasons why you may be struggling to write:
(note that any case of writer's block is usually a mix of two or more)
What it looks like:
You write one sentence and spend the next hour googling "synonyms for ___"
Write. Erase. Write. Rewrite. Erase.
Should I even start writing this scene when I haven't figured out this one specific detail yet?
I hate everything I write
Cringing while writing
My first draft must be perfect, or else I'm a terrible writer
Things that can help:
Give yourself permission to suck
Keep in mind that nothing you write is going to be perfect, especially your first draft
Think of writing your first/early drafts not as writing, but sketching out a loose foundation to build upon later
People write multiple drafts for a reason: write now, edit later
Stop googling synonyms and save that for editing
Write with a pen to reduce temptation to erase
Embrace leaving blank spaces in your writing when you can't think of the right word, name, or detail
It's okay if your writing sucks. We all suck at some point. Embrace the growth mindset, and focus on getting words on a page
What it looks like:
Head empty, no ideas
What do I even write about???
I don't have a plot, I just have an image
Want to write but no story to write
Things that can help:
Google writing prompts
If writing prompts aren't your thing, instead try thinking about what kind of tropes/genres/story elements you would like to try out
Instead of thinking about the story you would like to write, think about the story you would like to read, and write that
It's okay if you don't have a fully fleshed out story idea. Even if it's just an image or a line of dialogue, it's okay to write that. A story may or may not come out of it, but at least you got the creative juices flowing
Stop writing. Step away from your desk and let yourself naturally get inspired. Go for a walk, read a book, travel, play video games, research history, etc. Don't force ideas, but do open up your mind to them
If you're like me, world-building may come more naturally than plotting. Design the world first and let the story come later
What it looks like:
I know I should be writing but uugggghhhh I just can'tttttt
Writing words feels like pulling teeth
I started writing, but then I got bored/distracted
I enjoy the idea of writing, but the actual process makes me want to throw my laptop out the window
Things that can help:
Introduce stimulation: snacks, beverages, gum, music such as lo-fi, blankets, decorate your writing space, get a clickity-clackity keyboard, etc.
Add variety: write in a new location, try a new idea/different story for a day or so, switch up how you write (pen and paper vs. computer) or try voice recording or text-to-speech
Gamify writing: create an arbitrary challenge, such as trying to see how many words you can write in a set time and try to beat your high score
Find a writing buddy or join a writer's group
Give yourself a reward for every writing milestone, even if it's just writing a paragraph
Ask yourself whether this project you're working on is something you really want to be doing, and be honest with your answer
What it looks like:
I was feeling really motivated to write, but then I opened my laptop
I don't even know where to start
I love writing, but I can never seem to get started
I'll write tomorrow. I mean next week. Next month? Next month, I swear (doesn't write next month)
Can't find the time or energy
Unreasonable expectations (I should be able to write 10,000 words a day, right????)
Feeling discouraged and wondering why I'm even trying
Things that can help:
Follow the 2 min rule (or the 1 paragraph rule, which works better for me): whenever you sit down to write, tell yourself that you are only going to write for 2 minutes. If you feel like continuing once the 2 mins are up, go for it! Otherwise, stop. Force yourself to start but DO NOT force yourself to continue unless you feel like it. The more often you do this, the easier it will be to get started
Make getting started as easy as possible (i.e. minimize barriers: if getting up to get a notebook is stopping you from getting started, then write in the notes app of your phone)
Commit to a routine that will work for you. Baby steps are important here. Go with something that feels reasonable: every day, every other day, once a week, twice a week, and use cues to help you remember to start. If you chose a set time to write, just make sure that it's a time that feels natural to you- i.e. don't force yourself to writing at 9am every morning if you're not a morning person
Find a friend or a writing buddy you can trust and talk it out or share a piece of work you're proud of. Sometimes we just get a bit bogged down by criticism- either internal or external- and need a few words of encouragement
What it looks like:
I have no problems writing other scenes, it's just this scene
I started writing, but now I have no idea where I'm going
I don't think I'm doing this right
What's an outline?
Drowning in documents
This. Doesn't. Make. Sense. How do I get from this plot point to this one?!?!?! (this ColeyDoesThings quote lives in my head rent free cause BOY have I been there)
Things That Can Help:
Go back to the drawing board. Really try to get at the root of why a scene or story isn't working
A part of growing as a writer is learning when to kill your darlings. Sometimes you're trying to force an idea or scene that just doesn't work and you need to let it go
If you don't have an outline, write one
If you have an outline and it isn't working, rewrite it, or look up different ways to structure it
You may be trying to write as a pantser when you're really a plotter or vice versa. Experiment with different writing processes and see what feels most natural
Study story structures, starting with the three act structure. Even if you don't use them, you should know them
Check out Ellen Brock on YouTube. She's a professional novel editor who has a lot of advice on writing strategies for different types of writers
Also check out Savage Books on YouTube (another professional story editor) for advice on story structure and dialogue. Seriously, I cannot recommend this guy enough
What it looks like:
Everything in boredom/understimulation
Everything in intimidation/procrastination
You have been diagnosed with and/or have symptoms of ADHD/Autism
Things that can help:
If you haven't already, seek a diagnosis or professional treatment
Hire an ADHD coach or other specialist that can help you work with your brain (I use Shimmer; feel free to DM me for a referral)
Seek out neurodiverse and neurodiverse writing communities for advice and support
Try body doubling! There's lot's of free online body doubling websites out there for you to try. If social anxiety is a barrier, start out with writing streams such as katecavanaughwrites on Twitch
Be aware of any sensory barriers that may be getting in the way of you writing (such as an uncomfortable desk chair, harsh lighting, bad sounds)
What it looks like:
You have symptoms of burnout or depression
Struggling with all things, not just writing
It's more than a lack of motivation- the spark is just dead
Things that can help:
Forget writing for now. Focus on healing first.
Seek professional help
If you feel like it, use writing as a way to explore your feelings. It can take the form of journaling, poetry, an abstract reflection of your thoughts, narrative essays, or exploring what you're feeling through your fictional characters. The last two helped me rediscover my love of writing after I thought years of depression had killed it for good. Just don't force yourself to do so, and stop if it takes you to a darker place instead of feeling cathartic
i think ppl refuse to believe mike isnt straight and didnt believe will was either in the past bc SO MANY ppl only see queer ppl as characters, as over the top icons designed to sell/pander to other gay people. they're not people to them; no depth to their thoughts, feelings, intentions etc etc. irl not just in media, but that not-recognizing-gays-as-real-people in real life they are now also applying to media that strays from the 'norm'- to mike
literally "what ur gay! i could never have guessed," and "but u dont look gay๐"
