how to stay motivated as a writer

Reread your old writing. Especially those scenes you're proud of

Write something silly. Doesnโ€™t need to be logical, or included in your story. Write something dumb

Compare your old writing to your new writing. Seeing how much you've improved is a great way to get motivated

Explore different storylines. Those type of storylines that would never make it into your novel, but that you'd still like to explore

Choose one of your least favorite scenes, or a really old one, and rewrite it

Read old comments from people praising your work

Create a playlist of music that reminds you of your wip

Don't push yourself to get back to what made you stop writing in the first place. Write something else

Write what you want to write, no matter how clichรฉ it might be perceived as. It doesn't matter. If you want to write it, write it.

Take a break and focus on another hobby of yours. Consume other pieces of media, or take a walk to clear your head

You don't have to write in chronological order from the very beginning if it isn't working for you! Sometimes a scene you aren't interested in writing can become interesting after you've explored other scenes leading up to it/happening after it

Read one star reviews of ''awful'' books. As much as I hate to say it, you'll unlock a newly appreciated view on your own writing

create a new storyline, or a new character. Anything that helps bring something fresh into your story. Could even be a completely new wip

Not writing everyday doesn't make you a bad writer. If you feel you need a break, take one.

Remind yourself to have fun. Start writing and don't focus all your attention on following every rule created for writing. You can get into the nitty-gritty when youโ€™ve familiarized yourself with writing as an art. Or donโ€™t. It's fiction. You make your own rules.

Go to sleep, or take a nap. Sleep deprivation and writing does not go hand in hand (trust me)

Listen to music that reminds you of your characters/wip

Remember why you started. Know that you deserve to tell the story you want to tell regardless of the skill you possess

you know when youโ€™re writing and you think youโ€™ve got the plot figured out, but then you write some more sentences, introduce a couple new characters, and suddenly youโ€™re catapulted into the solar system, explodes like a supernova, gets sucked into a blackhole and slingshotted far beyond the observable universe

๐Ÿ’–๐ŸกDEALING WITH HATERS๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿก

๐Ÿ’–๐ŸกDEALING WITH HATERS๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿก

๐Ÿ’–Oh that person said this about me ๐Ÿ˜ญThey commented rude things about me โ˜น๏ธThey attacked me for expressing my opinions ๐Ÿฅฒ. Girl stop it ๐Ÿ›‘ โœ‹๏ธ Get over yourself . We need to step into our " IDAF" ERA !

๐ŸกBEING HATED ON IS A PRIVILEGE

Being hated on means you are RELEVANT ! You are so extremely relevant because that person is taking their time off to focus on YOU rather than themselves. Only the insecure people would choose you as their target because they are threatened by you.

๐Ÿ’–STOP PUTTING YOUR HATERS ON A PEDESTAL

Why are you putting your haters or bullies on a pedestal ? Why do their opinions outweigh your own opinions ? ๐Ÿค” Value yourself above these haters. Reassure yourself and put yourself on a pedestal. You should know you are great and you know your intention. Their words stay in your mind because you are giving them your power , precious energy and attention to them. You are giving their words more power than your own words.

๐ŸกYOUR WORTH DOES NOT RELY ON EXTERNAL OPINIONS

You are not an opinion of someone who does not know you or care about you. Realize this and you will be free ! As I told you before in my know your worth post , your worth should not rely on external opinions, if your worth relies on external opinions , you are a slave to other people. Your worth is intrinsic, it comes from within and it is present since the day you were born.

๐Ÿ’–JUDGEMENT IS THE GAME OF THE MISERABLE.

Haters are miserable. It is a fact. Even if it looks like they are doing better , they are not. Your hater could be the prettiest person in the world but when they look at themselves , they feel ugly. That is why people who usually bully or hate on others try to make the other person make insecure so that they can feel better about themselves. Happy people do not hate .

๐ŸกIT IS NOT PERSONAL

It is never personal, it is not about you, it is about them.It is so important to realize that haters are always projecting.

๐Ÿ’–NO RESPONSE IS THE BEST RESPONSE

The best response to a hater is no response. Do not give them your precious energy and time. If you show them that you are hurt by their comments , they will not feel bad for you . In fact , they will be happy because they won , they wanted your energy, time and wanted to feel they have power over you. Just be unbothered , do not give a damn about these losers. That is how you take your power back . Other people need your permission to make you feel bad about yourself, do not give them the permission.

๐ŸกA-T-T-E-N-T-I-O-N

If someone has an issue with you and they are telling everyone except you , they do not have a real issue with you , they just enjoy the attention they get from talking about you.

๐Ÿ’–I DONT CARE , YOU ARE YOU , I AM ME

Like our Queen Wonyoung said, if someone says something about her that is not true , she does not care . I don't care , You are You, I am me.

๐ŸกLOVE YOURSELF

Focus on your good qualities about yourself. Love yourself. Our Queen Wonyoung said that people will give you criticism even when you do not need it , so she only gives herself nothing but love. That is how you should think too. Give yourself nothing but love.

๐Ÿ’–๐ŸกDEALING WITH HATERS๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿก

๐Ÿ’– FOCUS ON YOU

Have a life. Be too busy to focus on these gremlins. If you are sitting idle and rotting in bed the whole day , of course , your brain will wonder. Have a routine. Be too focused on yourself to care about them.

๐ŸกKNOW YOURSELF

If you know yourself and understand yourself , you will not care what other people think about you. For example , if you know you are smart and beautiful , you will not care if someone else says that you are dumb or ugly. Take it like this, you are wearing a red t-shirt , someone comes upto and says your t-shirt is blue , will you believe them ? Will you try to explain yourself to them ? Or will you just be like - oh what a dumb person and move on with your life ?

๐Ÿ’–HAVE COMPASSION

You need to stop seeing them as a toxic , mean or evil person๐Ÿ˜ˆ . See them as someone who is unhealed , hurt or insecure . You do not need to be nice, kind or say anything to them. Have compassion for them and wish that they heal from whatever they are going through. Shift your energy from hurt and sadness to compassion. You will protect your peace and you will be unfazed.

๐ŸกTHEY ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT

Does this person contribute anything to your life ? Will their opinions help you pay your bills? Will their opinions help you pass your exam ? If no , why do you care about them ? They are not that important but you are . You should take care of you and not lose yourself because of what one person or many people say about you. They do not matter. They are irrelevant. You are the main character of your life.

๐Ÿ’–YOU ARE NOT BORN TO IMPRESS

In this world of social media , we often try to impress people who we do not even know. Always remember that YOU ARE BORN TO EXPRESS , NOT TO IMPRESS.

Will destroying castle byers

Will Destroying Castle Byers

ugh don't you guys hate when ur bff that your secretly in love with says it's not his fault you don't like girls during a big fight and you assume he is making a homophobic remark towards you (but you don't know he is deep in the closet dealing with insane amounts of internalized homophobia and is projecting his own fears onto you and doesn't actually know your gay), and his comment reminds you of the homophobic things your asshole father used to say to you, and you actually felt safe and understood with your bff, so him saying that hurts so fucking much and you feel so โ€œSTUPIDโ€ because you thought maybe he might have feelings for you too, after he has given you multiple signs over several years that he does, but now you think he could never have feelings for you after he makes that comment during your big fight and kind of damages your close bond, so you rip up a picture of you and him from halloween the previous year when you dressed as ghostbusters and said you would go "crazy together" while sobbing in the pouring rain and destroy the one place you felt safe in since you were a kid, with a baseball bat which is a symbol of your internalized homophobia because your homophobic father used to try to 'turn you straight' by trying to force you to like normal things like baseball, and this wooden structure your very nice older brother helped you build after your father left your family, and is the only place you felt like you could be yourself in where you hung your pride symbol (that may or may not be one of your drawings or a homemade flag because your family doesn't have a lot of money to buy things and you live in a small conservative town in the 80's so where would you buy a pride flag without being hate crimed and the internet doesn't exist yet so you can't just order one online), while you also wear socks with a subtle rainbow on them, and a striped t-shirt that also slightly resembles a rainbow.

Will Destroying Castle Byers

I think this is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in all of stranger things, and probably ever written. It's one of my favs.

the details>>>>>>> I can't. I'm crying.

Fantasy Guide to Building A Culture

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

Culture is defined by a collection of morals, ethics, traditions, customs and behaviours shared by a group of people.

Hierarchy and Social Structures

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

Within every culture, there is a hierarchy. Hierarchies are an important part of any culture, usually do ingrained that one within the culture wouldn't even question it. Hierarchy can be established either by age, gender or wealth and could even determine roles within their society. Sometimes hierarchy can may be oppressive and rigid whilst other times, ranks can intermingle without trouble. You should consider how these different ranks interact with one another and whether there are any special gestures or acts of deference one must pay to those higher than them. For example, the Khasi people of Meghalaya (Northern India), are strictly matriarchal. Women run the households, inheritance runs through the female line, and the men of the culture typically defer to their mothers and wives. Here are a few questions to consider:

How is a leader determined within the culture as a whole and the family unit?

Is the culture matriarchal? Patriarchal? Or does gender even matter?

How would one recognise the different ranks?

How would one act around somebody higher ranking? How would somebody he expected to act around somebody lower ranking?

Can one move socially? If not, why? If so, how?

Traditions and Customs

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

Traditions are a staple in any culture. These can be gestures or living life a certain way or to the way a certain person should look. Traditions are a personal detail to culture, they are what make it important. Tradition can dictate how one should keep their home, run their family, take care of their appearance, act in public and even determine relationship. Tradition can also be a double edged sword. Traditions can also be restrictive and allow a culture to push away a former member if they do not adhere to them, eg Traditional expectations of chastity led to thousands of Irish women being imprisoned at the Magdelene Laundries. Customs could be anything from how one treats another, to how they greet someone.

How important is tradition?

What are some rituals your culture undertakes?

What are some traditional values in your world? Does it effect daily life?

Are there any traditions that determine one's status?

Values and Opinions

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

Values and Opinions are the bread and butter of any culture. This is the way your culture sees the world and how they approach different life hurdles. These may differ with other cultures and be considered odd to outsiders, what one culture may value another may not and what opinion another holds, one may not. There will be historical and traditional reasons to why these values and opinions are held. Cultures usually have a paragon to which they hold their members to, a list of characteristics that they expect one to if not adhere to then aspire to. The Yoruba people value honesty, hard work, courage and integrity. Here are some questions to consider?

How important are these ethics and core values? Could somebody be ostracised for not living up to them?

What are some morals that clash with other cultures?

What does your culture precieved to be right? Or wrong?

What are some opinions that are considered to be taboo in your culture? Why?

Dress Code

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

For many cultures, the way somebody dresses can be important. History and ethics can effect how one is meant to be dressed such as an expectation of chastity, can impose strict modesty. While other cultures, put more importance on details, the different sorts of clothes worn and when or what colour one might wear. The Palestinian people (ู…ู† ุงู„ู†ู‡ุฑ ุฅู„ู‰ ุงู„ุจุญุฑ ุŒ ู‚ุฏ ูŠูƒูˆู†ูˆู† ุฃุญุฑุงุฑุง) denoted different family ties, marriage status and wealth by the embroidery and detailing on their thoub.

Are there traditional clothes for your world? Are they something somebody wears on a daily basis or just on occasion?

Are there any rules around what people can wear?

What would be considered formal dress? Casual dress?

What would happen if somebody wore the wrong clothes to an event?

Language

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

Language can also be ingrained as part of a Culture. It can be a specific way one speaks or a an entirely different language. For example, in the Southern States of America, one can engage in a sort of double talk, saying something that sounds sweet whilst delivering something pointed. Bless their heart. I have a post on creating your own language here.

Arts, Music and Craft

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

Many cultures are known for different styles of dance, their artwork and crafts. Art is a great part of culture, a way for people to express themselves and their culture in art form. Dance can be an integral part of culture, such as cรฉilรญ dance in Ireland or the Polka in the Czech Republic. Handicrafts could also be important in culture, such as knitting in Scottish culture and Hebron glass in Palestine. Music is also close to culture, from traditional kinds of singing such as the White Voice in Ukraine and the playing of certain instruments such as the mvet.

Food and Diet

Fantasy Guide To Building A Culture

The way a culture prepares or intakes or treats certain foods are important to a culture. In some cultures, there is a diet yo adhere to, certain foods are completely banned. With Jewish culture, pork is prohibited along with fish such as sturgeon, along with shellfish and certain fowl. Meat must also be prepared in a certain way and animal byproducts such as dairy, must never be created or even eaten around this meat. This is known as kosher. The way one consumes food is also important to culture. In some cultures, only certain people may eat together. Some cultures place important on how food is eaten. In Nigerian culture, the oldest guests are served first usually the men before the women. In Japanese culture, one must say 'itadakimasu' (I recieve) before eating. Culture may also include fasting, periods of time one doesn't intake food for a specific reason.

What are some traditional dishes in your world?

What would be a basic diet for the common man?

What's considered a delicacy?

Is there a societal difference in diet? What are the factors that effect diet between classes?

Is there any influence from other cuisines? If not, why not? If so, to what extent?

What would a typical breakfast contain?

What meals are served during the day?

What's considered a comfort food or drink?

Are there any restrictions on who can eat what or when?

Are there any banned foods?

What stance does your world take on alcohol? Is it legal? Can anybody consume it?

Are there any dining customs? Are traditions?

Is there a difference in formal meals or casual meals? If so, what's involved?

Are there any gestures or actions unacceptable at the dinner table?

How are guests treated at meals? If they are given deference, how so?
