Guide to Writing Steampunk
BASICS
Punk Genres: most common genres are in italics
Atomicpunk: Optimistic retro science fiction based on the Space Age. Think The Jetsons.
Biopunk: This genre is about altering genetics and DNA. These stories often take place in the near-future in which humans have been altered or in which human experimentation is common.
Candlepunk: Similar to clockpunk, but darker and with less technology.
Clockpunk: Think Da Vinci’s inventions, but more advanced while. This genre follows the aesthetics and technology of Western civilization during the mid to late middle ages, though sometimes it’s set in the Victorian era.
Cyberpunk: Has advanced technology and often focuses on artificial intelligence and the cyber world. The setting is often near-future rather than far-future. Blade Runner is an example.
Dieselpunk: Based on aesthetics and technology between World War I and World War II, sometimes up until the Cold War.
Decopunk: Ranges from the aesthetics of the 1920’s to the 1950’s. Decopunk aesthetic is heavily based on modernism. Less gritty than dieselpunk.
Elfpunk: Basically urban fantasy, but with common high or epic fantasy creatures put in an urban setting rather than vampires and werewolves.
Nanopunk: Similar to biopunk, but biotechnology is less available and nanotechnology is common.
Sandalpunk: Set in ancient worlds, such as Rome, but with advanced technology.
Splatterpunk: Extremely graphic and contains a lot of gore.
Steampunk: This genre gets its name from the heavy steam-powered technology involved. Aesthetics are based on the Victorian and industrial eras of the Western world, though other cultural elements may be used.
Western Steampunk: Similar to steampunk, but with Western (as in Wild West) aesthetics and settings.
So why are there so many sub genres? For starters, they help agents and publishers get an idea of what they’re in for if you’re going through the traditional publishing route. While bookstores usually just put these genres within science fiction or fantasy, you can still market your book through sub genres to reach a specific group of people who are looking for these genres. However, there are a lot of sub genres, most of which many have not heard of. If you’ve written one of these genres and intend to publish it, the best would be to put it under another name (with the exception of steampunk, cyberpunk, and biopunk). For example, if you have written a candlepunk story, you can propose it as fantasy, alternate historical fiction, or any other genre it may fit in. While atomicpunk is quite common, it’s not well known by that name. If you have written an atompunk story, the best way to market it would be to call it retro science fiction. But what’s the difference between punk genres and historical fiction? The technology is a big difference. It’s usually more advanced for the time it’s modeled after.
TECHNOLOGY
The technology is one of the defining aspects of steampunk. It’s the basis for the world you’re writing in. For the typical steampunk story, technology will be (of course) steam powered.

CHARACTERS & FASHION
Another defining feature of steampunk is the aesthetics and the characters. Steampunk takes the latter part of the word (punk) to mean the opposition of the mainstream, though that’s not always necessary in your story.
Research jobs common in the Victorian age and add steam to it. Your characters will revolve around their setting and their clothing may be a part of that too.

Tumblcoin has reportedly suffered yet another devastating crash. Value has appeared to dip into the negative numbers, leaving investors completely TBCless. Entirely too on-brand user iinvestedeverythingintumblcoin states “I’ve made some awful decisions. I invested everything in Tumblcoin.”
Tumblcoin’s market value has finally stabilized after the cryptocurrency’s earlier crash. At the advice of economic professionals, investors in the Tumblr community worked together to create new memes to save the young cryptocurrency.
“We literally never asked for this,” sighed one member of Tumblr who wished to remain anonymous.
Literally dozens of people panicked today as TBC crashed. “I really thought Tumblcoin was the future of currency,” said Tumblcoin investor xxxcryptoboy421xxx.
When asked how such a dip in value could occur a mere hour after Tumblr referred to the cryptocurrency as “completely sound” and “unsinkable,” their Chief Coin Officer appeared to dissociate completely.
Investors claim a drop in the Expanding Brain meme as a possible source of TBC’s recent violent fluctuation.
Local economy analysts have stated the only way to save Tumblcoin is by urging the Tumblr community to create a brand new meme to bolster the strength of the young cryptocurrency. The fate is in their hands.
The Chief Coin Officer of Tumblr has issued a new press release a mere eight hours after the announcement of Tumblcoin:
Unlike other cryptocurrencies, Tumblcoin has no maximum limit. We used numerous and varied economic studies to develop this completely sound process, and we’re entirely confident this will help create the most stable cryptocurrency this world has ever seen. There is no way this can fail. It’s the unsinkable currency.
As of press time, the CCO did not respond when asked for details on the “numerous and varied” economic studies.
Tumblr is reportedly proud to announce their newest feature: Tumblcoin. Tumblcoin is the latest in the entirely unstable cryptocurrency market. The social media and publishing platform claims that the currency is somehow assured by the platform’s unceasing flow of high-quality memes and low-quality shitposts. When pressed for details, staff was heard mumbling incoherently.
The new Chief Coin Officer of Tumblr eventually stepped up to explain: “As more users like, reblog, and create posts, more coins are mined for their portfolio. Because it’s so easy to keep creating new Tumblcoins, no one will ever be in short supply. We’ve also opened up the world’s first store that accepts TBC. You can now buy the hottest items any member of the Tumblr community could possibly want, like old Horse Friends or the world-renowned missing E.”
The value of Tumblcoin has exploded, leaving some to wonder if it’s too late to throw their entire savings into this completely unstable market. Official Tumblcoin News sat down with Tumblr’s Chief Coin Officer to ask them what you want to know.
Given Tumblcoin’s erratic behavior in its 14 hour existence, what would you say to people who want to invest right now?
The only way to win is to play. We’re urging users to reblog and like their favorite memes to drive the value of TBC higher and higher, and we’re counting on them to create and post original memes to shatter the ceiling of this market.
Are some memes worth more than others?
This is an equal opportunity cryptocurrency, and we plan to keep it that way.
In retrospect, was it a poor decision to call Tumblcoin “The Unsinkable Currency”?
If we had to go back and write the press release all over again, I would have absolutely not painted a picture that likened Tumblcoin to the Titanic. That was, admittedly, a big whoops.
Anything parting words?
The people behind Tumblcoin are confident in blindly saying that it is smooth sailing from here on out. You would have to be a fool to not invest in TBC today.
Official Tumblcoin News has received word that Tumblcoin has forked, dividing the online community in two.
The rushed spinoff poses a threat to with siginificant financial safety risks for those who who invested in TBCash. Tumblcoin warns its investors that TBCash is not sanctioned by or made available on Tumblr.
Much like Tumblcoin, Tumblcoin Cash has absolutely no value in any country in this entire galaxy.
Jesus: HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY!!
John: *clutching his tunic* jesus cHRIST!
Peter: Heh.
I told this Joke to my extremely religious father and his first reply was “funny but don’t tell it to your mother”
Fun fact: Tenochtitlan fell in 1521. From 1603 onwards, large numbers of honest-to-god fricking Japanese Samurai came to Mexico from Japan to work as guardsmen and mercenaries.
Ergo, it would be 100% historically accurate to write a story starring a quartet consisting of the child or grandchild of Aztec Noblemen, an escaped African slave, a Spanish Jew fleeing the Inquisition (which was relaxed in Mexico in 1606, for a time) and a Katana-wielding Samurai in Colonial Mexico.
I- I just can’t get over Zuko and his arc. Everything he did - everything - was out of this insane drive to prove everyone wrong, to prove that he was worth something, and it amazes me that he never realized just how valuable he already was.
His sister tells him ‘You waste all your time playing with knives. You’re not even good!’ and he masters dual swords.
His sister is a prodigy and he’s told he’ll never catch up. He learns from dragons. He trains the Avatar. He takes her down (with the help of a very skilled waterbender)
He’s left behind by his mother, cast out by his father, hunted by his sister, and Zuko still learns unconditional love.
His father tells him he’s worthless and unloved, that he was ‘lucky to be born,’ and he becomes a man that the world is proud of.
Anything his family said to him, he managed to turn around and build on it. He thrived on it, exploded from it, turned all the negativity into a positive path and it’s just… it’s amazing.
There’s just no end to my love for this character. No fucking end.
Bonus: The weak, banished prince has fangirls for all the ages. Take that, Ozai.

ACE ATTORNEY SHIP POPULARITY - BREAKDOWN BY COMMUNITY
(Percentages are “percent of respondents from each community that ships each ship in question”. Also, “I don’t”, as a “community”, is a result of the way I phrased the question in the survey, which was “Where do you primarily participate in the Ace Attorney fandom and interact with other fans?”.)
Overall ship popularity totals can be seen here, and the spreadsheet with all the data (and even more graphs!) is here.
This was my favorite part of the survey, and one of the main questions I, personally, wanted to answer: do fans who congregate in different parts of the internet ship differently?
The answer was more clear than even I expected.
Some trends stick out immediately. You can almost always tell exactly where all four major communities will fall on the scale, just by whether a ship is gay or straight. Tumblr and AO3 far and away prefer same-sex ships and usually have low opinions of het ones; Reddit and Court Records overall prefer het ships and tend to be less interested in same-sex ships. (Reddit is shockingly, overwhelmingly straight; just look at that disparity on Phoenix/Edgeworth, the by far most popular non-canon ship in the whole survey.)
However, there appear to be a couple different, interesting factors in play here:
