Part one
You weaved through the throng of people in the town square, hoping to get by unnoticed. Maria had told you where to find Tommy, you should have known it wouldnât be easy, nothing with him ever really was.Â
âY/N! Hey!âÂ
Nope
You had one goal and it was not to meet and greet with all your neighbors. You ducked your head down, hiding yourself in the passing throng of people and evading them. It was a new couple that had just moved to Jackson a few days ago.Â
You, of course, had protested anyone new coming in after the incident with Abby and her people. But because you and the brothers had been less than forthcoming with what happened and no one had any reason to listen to your doubts.Â
Theyâd been moved into the big house across from you and Joel, because they needed the space.Â
Because she was pregnant.Â
In three months your life was going to get very loud and very miserable.Â
The couple was too nice for your taste. Youâd just barely gotten used to staying in Jackson for longer than two weeks, then Maria went ahead and shoved the two friendliest people youâd even met down your throat.Â
Maybe you were too bitter. Maybe everyone was right, you should try and socialize, give people the benefit of the doubt before you write them off.Â
âDo you see where she went, honey?â
Then again, maybe not.Â
You rushed into the Tipsy Bison before they could spot you. You were sure they would tell Joel about this when they spotted him on the porch with his morning coffee. And you were sure he would give you hell for it, but you already have to deal with Tommy this morning. They can go bother someone else.Â
You glanced around the bar, spotting some blonde hair in the back. When you rounded the tables you could see Tommy was busy haggling with Sam, trying to trade a shirt for some of his roast beef sandwiches.Â
âI think Iâm offering more than enough for some sandwiches, Sam.â Tommy, being the de facto leader after Maria, was trying to maintain a semblance of diplomacy.Â
Sam was a stubborn jackass and you knew if you didnât do something this would take all day. You walked up and nodded a greeting to Tommy before glaring at Sam. âGive him the sandwiches.â
Sam glared at you, trying his damndest to look down his nose at you. âMind your fucking business.â
Tommy straightened up, a frown on his face. Neither he nor his brother had ever been good at losing the whole Texan chivalry thing. They didnât do well when someone disrespected a âladyâ in front of them. âI think you need to watch your tone, Sam.â
You held up a hand towards Tommy, stopping him from getting too riled up. You already had a less than respectable reputation in Jackson, didnât need to drag him down with you. âGive him the sandwiches, and we wonât need to get Joel involved.â
Sam opened and closed his mouth, he glanced between you and Tommy, like he was trying to call your bluff. You couldnât really help yourself as your hand drifted down to land on your holster, your fingers idly drumming against the leather. Finally he huffed, mumbled something prickish under his breath and shoved the sandwiches into Tommyâs hands, snatching the shirt. You watched until he retreated into the kitchen to address Tommy.Â
âYou probably coulda kept the shirt.â
Tommy shrugged, tucking the food in his pack. âYeah, but we do things a certain way here. Canât just go flashing your pistol at people.â
You scoffed, âDidnât flash my pistol, I used your brother.â
Tommy chuckled and nodded his head towards the barâs exit. You followed him outside, looking around to make sure the coast was clear of your neighbors. When you turned back to face him he was giving you an odd look. âWhatâre you so jumpy for?â
You sighed, âYour wife decided to move Mr. and Mrs. Rogers next to me and Joel.â
Tommy smiled and laughed, most definitely at your expense. âYou mean Ann and James,â you nodded, ushering him along the sidewalk in case they popped up again. âTheyâre nice people, I think sheâs just trying to get you to branch out.â
âDonât need to,â you grunted out. Though, hunching over, hiding from anyone who wants to talk to you, you werenât sure you were making a great case for yourself. You straightened up and glared at him, ââSides, I didnât come out to chat about my new neighbors. I want to talk about the Harvest Festival and my âdate.ââ You couldnât keep the disdain out of your voice if you tried, which you werenât.
âBob,â Tommy offered. You rolled your eyes and nodded. âWhat about it?â
âIâm not going.â
Tommy crossed his arms and smirked. âSays who?â
âMe,â you werenât sure what he wanted from you.Â
âAnd why not?â
Oh. Oh. That stupid smug little look was back on his face. How in the hell does he know? âI think you know why.â
He shook his head, âNope, donât think I do.â
He was really making you do this? âI canât go because of Joel.â
âWhatâs my brother got to do with this?â
You opened your mouth, some argument at the tip of your tongue, but it was lost to you the second you tried to speak it into existence. Why couldnât you go?
You broke apart from Joel slowly, neither of you in any sort of rush to end this. Idly, and without much thought behind it, your fingers traced the shape of his lips. You didnât realize you were smiling until you saw the same soft expression mirrored on his face.Â
âBeen wanting to do that for a while,â his voice was quiet, as if he spoke any louder the trance would be broken.Â
âIâve been waiting for you to do that for a while,â your smile grew when the hands around your waist squeezed you tighter. He pulled you closer and you got comfortable in his lap, your hands moving down to play with the fabric of his shirt.Â
He didnât seem to mind the subtle exploration, his own hands mimicking yours. Now that you finally had the chance, neither of you seemed able to stop touching each other. You werenât sure where to go from here.Â
You hadnât realized how desperately you had wanted this, wanted him, until you had him. You didnât want to ruin the moment by overthinking or complicating something simple. Still, is everything going to change now?
Did that kiss mean as much to him as it meant to you?Â
What did this mean-
âHey,â you startled slightly, jolted out of your thoughts by the heavy weight of Joelâs hand on your cheek. âI can see that brain going. I can practically hear the rust flaking off the gears in your head.â
You scoffed and smacked at his chest, âShut up.â But he was right, it was far too easy for you to get lost in your own head. Especially concerning him. You were grateful for the way he could anchor you in the present, drag you back out of a trap of your own making.Â
Joel stood, his arms wrapping around you and dragging you along with him. You could hear his bones popping, you wanted to protest, tell him to just let you walk, but you knew he wouldnât listen. He had that determined look on his face, the one that meant he was ignoring how old and worn out his back and knees were.Â
Besides, you liked how strong he was. Relished in these little displays of strength, even if it was something as simple as carrying you to bed. You knew you needed to talk, you needed some sort of verbal confirmation that this was more than just two lonely souls looking for company.
But Joel just dropped you on the mattress, grumbled about getting your stuff from the guest room, and left. You changed out of your clothes, brushed your teeth, and waited for him to come back. When he did, he had changed too, he dumped a pile of blankets on the bed and got in beside you.Â
He laid down and wrapped his arms around your waist, dragging you into his side. You looked down at where he was holding you, lacing your fingers together, and let yourself fall asleep. You two didnât say anything else, you just reveled in each other's warmth, let the comfort you provided lull you both into an easy sleep. And when you woke up in the morning, he had breakfast ready for you, but he didnât say anything about the night before.Â
In fact, for the next week, there was no mention of you two kissing or what his vague, half-confession meant. Sure, now he greeted you with a kiss each morning and night, but other than that nothing had changed about how you two operated.Â
You didnât have anything to appease Tommy with as he looked at you expectantly. No, nothing had majorly changed between you and Joel and you hadnât had a real discussion about anything. But, you didnât really need one, you knew what you meant to each other. And you knew how hard it is for people like you and Joel to have those discussions.Â
Emotions, romance, love were all such distant concepts, it felt so foreign to you. If you tried to date, or speak into existence how much weight he held in your life you know inevitably it would just end up complicating and ruining things.Â
You were together, alive and not some mindless fungi outside Jackson, the rest was inconsequential.Â
You just said, âCancel it, Iâm going with Joel,â and walked off before you had to be subjected to more of his smug face.Â
You made your way back through town, the morning rush having calmed down now that everyone had gotten their supplies or found their assignments for the week. You were thankful not to spot any nosy neighbors as you made your way back, that was the last thing you needed after having to deal with Tommyâs questions.Â
Neither you or Joel were really big fans of talking about your emotions, hell youâd have punched someone out back in the QZ just for telling you to look for the light. Gooey stuff was practically a foreign language to you now.Â
You could function based on actions; setting out his coffee in the morning or a new book appearing on your nightstand when heâd gotten back from patrolling. It was all you needed to understand what you were to each other. Â
You trudged up the stairs to the porch, Joel was sitting in his favorite rocking chair, a mug resting on his knee. His supply was running low, you were gonna have to find someone to trade with again. You had been keeping an eye out on your patrols, trying to see if you could find any beans.Â
You werenât really sure how coffee plants worked, if you planted the beans whether they would even grow or not. But it was worth a shot.Â
âHowâd it go?â
You let out a long sigh and threw yourself down on the chair next to him. It creaked under your weight but held up against the strain of its old age. You rocked back and forth, plucking at a string on your jeans. âFine.â
He snorted slightly as he took another sip of his coffee. âLooks like it. Oh, Jason and Anna stopped by.â
It was your turn to laugh, you smirked at him, propping your head in your hand. âYou mean Ann and James?â
He rolled his eyes and nodded, âYeah, them.â
âYouâre losing it, old man.â
He shrugged, âI donât know, they were concerned about your hearing. Said they mustâve called your name ten times and you didnât hear them.â There was a shit eating grin on his face as he stared at you, like he knew it was complete bullshit.Â
You rolled your eyes and scoffed, âPlease.â You sat up and leaned forward, irritation forcing you upright, âIf I have to listen to her complain about how tender her breasts are again, Iâll shoot myself.â
Joel grimaced, giving you a disgusted look as he put his mug down. âThese people know what T-M-I is?â He put too much emphasis on each letter and you couldnât help yourself as you laughed. It was always funny to hear him get an attitude with that gruff Texan accent, he ended up sounding like a poor attempt at valley girl. He swatted your knee, trying to get you to stop making fun of him.Â
âTommy, come on, whatâd he say?â
You shrugged, looking down and away from him, going back to playing with the loose thread of your jeans. âI donât know, he was asking all these questions.â
Joel was quick to ask, âWhat questions?â
You rested your head on the back of the rocking chair, âWhy I didn't want to go on the date.â
âWhatâd you say?â
Jesus, he was barely taking a breath. âI said,â you paused and looked at him, not really surprised to already find him looking at you. His gaze wasnât as intense as you were expecting, more eager? You werenât sure Joel got eager. âI said I couldnât go with whatâs-his-face to the festival because of you.â
âYeah?â He smirked, leaning back in his rocking chair, a strange sort of male pride clear on his face. âHow come?â
You scoffed, glaring at him from where you sat. The hell was he getting at? âWhy do you think, genius? Why would I go out with someone when Iâve got you?â
âYou got me?â
You paused, irritation draining from your body as you stared at him. His face wasnât giving anything away, he wasnât closed off, just staring at you expectantly. âDonât I?â You hated the way your voice went quiet, you wished it had been more confident, teasing, like you knew the answer and were screwing with him. You sounded too vulnerable.Â
Joel let you squirm for a minute, youâre pretty sure he thought it was funny. Finally he sighed and leaned forward, his hand landing on your thigh and you could feel the warmth of it through your jeans. You hadnât realized how cold youâd gotten until he was this close, walking furnace that he was.Â
âYeah, you do.â You tried not to let the relief show, though youâre sure it did if his little smirk was anything to go by. He squeezed your thigh once before he stood up to go back inside.Â
âOh,â you suddenly remembered the last bit of your conversation with Tommy. âAnd I told him you were taking me to the harvest,â you called over your shoulder. It was your turn to screw with him, and if the way his shoulders tensed up as he paused in the doorway was anything to go by, he was just as excited as you about that ridiculous festival.Â
âWhenâs your next patrol?â
Joel had found you an old mystery book on his last run, the same one you were reading now. You marked the page and put it down on the nightstand as he got into bed next to you. âNot sure, I think thursday. Why?â
He shrugged, leaning back against the pillows and gazing at you. âI was thinking I could go with you. We could go exploring that old art museum Maria told me was a couple miles out.â He reached out, tucking some hair behind your ear and you tried not to lean too much into him.
You smiled, almost accepting when you realized what he was doing and the smile dropped. You huffed out a breath and rolled your eyes. âNice try, Joel, weâre going to the harvest festival.â
He held up his hands in mock surrender, âGot no idea what youâre talking about.â
âReally?â He shook his head, oh-so-innocent. You scoffed, âYouâre so full of it. If I went with you, weâd miss the harvest festival. And who would have to listen to Tommyâs bitching? Me.â
âHeâs my brother.â
âThen you deal with him!â You picked your book back up, deciding on ignoring him for the rest of the night. You should have known he would try and weasel his way out of this.
Honestly, once youâd decided you were going with Joel, the festival didnât seem that awful or daunting. Youâre a little hurt he wants to get out of it so badly. You werenât that bad of company.Â
âYou ignorinâ me now?â
You shrugged, flipping through the book, not really absorbing anything. Youâd have to reread this chapter tomorrow.Â
A big hand found itself in front of your face, blocking you from reading anything more. Joel dog-eared the page, something you loudly protested to, and threw the book on his nightstand. âJoel, you know I hate when you do that.â
âYeah, I know,â you rolled your eyes at his little smirk. âBut youâre talkinâ to me.â
âChild. Youâre a child.â
He leaned over you and shut your lamp off, ignoring your snippy still usinâ that. He settled down in bed and patted the spot next to him. You hesitated, only for a moment, debating whether you wanted to give him more of a hard time or just give in.Â
It wasnât a hard choice.Â
You settled down beside him, your head falling on his chest and his arm naturally wound itself around your back. You tried to ignore the way your legs fit together, how you felt like a complete puzzle when you laid down beside him, the two of you fitting together perfectly. You tried even harder to ignore the way the thought made your heart race, but it was nearly impossible.Â
Sometimes you resented Joel a little bit. Resented him for the way you lost control of yourself and your emotions when you were around him. Resented all the power he held over you and how unaware of it he seemed to be.Â
âI really donât want to go.â
You scoffed, your fingers tracing the design on the worn out t-shirt he was wearing. âYou think I do?â
âThen letâs just skip it.â
âJoel, I already said-â
âWe used to be able to just do whatever we wanted.â You paused as he interrupted you, closing your mouth and tilting your head up so you could look at him. âWe went where we wanted, when we wanted. There weren't all these bullshit obligations like patrol, or making sure our shifts match up.â
You were silent, taking in what he was saying. It wasnât hard to miss the resent lingering in his tone, or the way he spoke fondly of your past. Before you had responsibilities. But you must have been quiet for too long because he reached over and turned his lamp off, closing his eyes with a sigh.Â
You stayed awake a while longer, just thinking about what he said. He was starting to sound like you, the same frustration and anger at being expected to provide for others. You were at everyoneâs beck and call here. People viewed you as do-ers. Someone needed something done, you were the one to do it, and there was no arguing either, because everyone worked together here.Â
The thought left a bitter taste on your tongue as you went to sleep.
âCome on, hurry up!â
Ellie was sitting on the couch, she ran the towel in her hand over her hair roughly. You stood behind the chair, scissors in your hand as Joel trudged down the stairs. You wrapped a towel around his shoulders to keep his wet hair from dripping on his shirt.Â
Years ago, a time that feels nearly as distant as 2003, it was Tess who would cut yours and Joelâs hair. Youâd sit down in the crappy apartment you had in the QZ and sheâd use some blunted ass scissors to saw off your hair.Â
Neither you nor Joel should have been trusted with any scissors, but when Tess was gone and you were on the road for too long Ellie and Joel would start bitching about their hair. Neither of them liked how it would touch their neck.Â
Luckily while you were still learning there were no mirrors. They couldnât see how horribly you had done. They would always run their hands through their hair and frown, like they knew something was wrong, but they just couldnât prove it.Â
The only thing you had to worry about for a while was just not busting out laughing every time you saw the bangs you accidentally gave them.Â
Thankfully, by the time you reached Jackson youâd gotten good enough at it that they would still come and badger you for a haircut. Theyâd never had a chance to see just how horribly you had done in the beginning.Â
âOh, Jesse wanted me to ask you if youâd do his hair soon?â
You gave Ellie a noncommittal hum, running your fingers through Joelâs hair. âI like it long.â
âCut it.â He didnât exactly leave any room for arguments, he even crossed his arms, like you were actually going to pester him about it. You werenât, but you were leaving some length, itâs not like he could cut it himself.Â
He tilted his head slightly towards Ellie, âWhatâs Jesse want with her?â
You pushed his head back in place and started snipping. âWhat do you think he wants?â Ellie snorted, she got off the couch, probably already bored of sitting there. She went over to the mirror on the wall, running her hands through her hair and grinning.Â
âIsnât he with Dina?â You werenât proud of it, but you might have picked up some information about people around town. Would you say gossiping? No. Would others? Probably.Â
âNot anymore, they broke up a while ago.â Ellie turned around, hands on her hips as she stared at you.Â
You momentarily paused in cutting Joelâs hair, ignoring his disgruntled complaint. âAm I missing something?â
Joel turned to face her as well, matching confused expressions on both your faces. âYeah,â Ellie paused, like she was waiting for the two of you to connect the dots. You glanced down at Joel but he just shrugged.Â
He tried, âI thought Jesse and Ellie were dating.âÂ
You rolled your eyes and shoved Joelâs head forward, going back to the haircut.Â
âGod! You guys, me and Dina are dating, weâve been dating for like three months.â
âI thought you were friends,â Joel offered unhelpfully.Â
âClearly not,â Ellie sniped back. âYou guys seriously didnât know?â
You shrugged, âI donât know what you kids get up to.â Ellie sighed and sat back down on the couch seemingly disheartened by your underwhelming reaction. âAt least you canât get her pregnant.â
Ellie sucked in a breath, âRight.â
Joel swatted your hands away from his hair, he better pray that doesnât screw you up. âEllie, what was that?â
âWhat?â
âThat noise you just made.â
âJoel,â you interrupted, forcing his head back in place, âstop moving, dammit.â
âDinaâs pregnant,â Ellie rushed the sentence out in one, jumbled breath.Â
You watched as Joelâs shoulders tensed and then slumped in front of you. âHowâd you even get her pregnant?â
âWhatâre you doing?â
Joel closed the patrol log and shook his head, âNothing, come on.âÂ
Your eyebrows furrowed in suspicion as you watched him walk off. He had spent way too long by the log book for him to have just been writing - Couple runners, took âem out -J
You wanted to open it up and look but he was watching you from the entrance of the garage. You shoved aside your curiosity and followed him out to the horses. He grabbed the reins of his horse, âCome on, Sunny.â He shook his head and scoffed as he mounted her, âStill think their names are ridiculous.â
âSunny and Cher,â you pet the black mane of your own mare and huffed out a laugh. âHowâs Ellie even know who they are?â
âI donât know, mustâve heard it from someone âcause she donât even spell Sunnyâs name right.â
âAnd sheâs a girl.â
He laughed, âAnd sheâs a girl.âÂ
He led you both outside into the sunny woods. Snowâs completely melted now, you werenât sure how Maria and Tommy managed to time their âHarvest Festivalâ so perfectly but it was a good time to celebrate the incoming warm weather.Â
âSo,â you nudged Cher forward to walk alongside him. âWhere are we going?â Joel shrugged but didnât provide you any answers. âClearly not Jackson,â you were going the opposite direction of the town.Â
You glanced at the back of Sunny, the bags he had tied to her saddle, each of them far too stuffed for a simple patrol. âYou kidnapping me?â
âMaybe.â
You sighed, rolling your head back and taking in the greenery of the woods. You were definitely eager for winter to be over. Something about the cold weather makes the infected go fucking insane. They're faster, meaner, and just over all bigger pains in the ass. Not to mention the fact that they travel in huge fucking hordes.Â
Tommy always tries to pretend he knows about them, something about the barometric pressure making them migrate but you know heâs just full of it. You watched a pair of hareâs dart in front of you and Joel and took in a deep breath.Â
God, youâd forgotten how nice it was to be outside without the sound of people around you. There was the sound of the horses' hooves squishing lightly over wet grass, the wind moving the leaves above you, and the distant sound of birds singing. But no voices, or kids, or people demanding favors.
Youâd missed this, with Joel specifically. Itâd been a while since you had this type of quiet with him. So, you didnât push him too much about where he was taking you, just followed him down the path.Â
You were fine not bugging him while you were on a lovely jaunt through a pretty forest. But itâs been an hour and you canât feel extremities that really need blood flow. âJoel,â you tried to remain friendly but your tone was strained as you shifted on your saddle for the nth time.Â
âYeah?â He grunted out.Â
âHow much longer?â
âNot much longer.â He turned around and frowned at you, âHave some patience.â
You tugged on Cherâs reins, forcing her to stop while you glared at Joelâs back. âPatience? Joel, weâve been out here since six. Iâve had a lot of fucking patience. But that ran out about three miles ago, right when I stopped being able to feel my a-â
âWeâre here.â
Of course you were.Â
Joel got off Sunny and offered you a hand down. You took it eagerly, more than happy to finally stretch your legs out. You were a bit surprised when he kept your hands locked together, he wasnât normally one for touchy shows of affection.Â
Not that you were complaining, you were more than happy to revel in the comforting feeling of his hands in yours. Though, his were definitely rougher than your own, you werenât without your own callouses, but heâd had years of carpentry and being a contractor under his belt before the apocalypse.Â
Heâd paused in a field, the grass here was up to your waist which made it difficult to see where you were stepping and what you were stepping on. You kept close to Joel, the horses trailing behind you both as he led you through the field.Â
It took a moment for you to realize youâd never been out here. Youâd only been vaguely paying attention to the direction you went while you were on the horses, trusting Joel to know the way. But this was definitely unrecognizable, which was strange, you thought youâd found everything when you went exploring on your own.Â
Out in the distance you could see a vague shape forming, some brown structure that you couldnât really make out as the grass was getting taller. It only took a few feet to finally figure out what was looming over you.Â
A fence.Â
Fun.
You said as much to Joel, probably in the most sarcastic tone you could muster. He rolled his eyes and kneeled down. You couldnât help but admire his arms as he dug his fingers into a rotten plank of wood and pulled. He managed to make a hole large enough for you to crawl through and motioned towards it.Â
âWell, go on, smartass.â
You huffed, getting down on your hands and knees and squeezing your way through. You didnât bother seeing what was in front of you, turning around so you could keep the way through open for him. The wood dug into your palm, splinters burying themselves in your skin.Â
God, this better be worth it.Â
He groaned as he straightened up, pulling you to your feet and stretching his back out. âAlright. Ready?â
âYep,â you rolled your eyes as he walked in front of you. What could have been so amazing he had dragged you out here?
A house.Â
Well, it was a nice house, better taken care of than youâd seen out here. Looked like an old farmhouse, two stories, and a wraparound porch. Something you would have loved a long time ago. Surrounding it was a tall fence, it went out pretty far, there was room enough for a large garden and then some. There were bits where the wood had rotted or had holes in it that looked like someone had broken through. But the grass was trimmed, a normal height instead of tickling the ends of your hair.Â
Overall, nice, but you had no clue what Joel was doing out here.Â
âWhat do you think?â
âItâs nice.â
Joel scoffed, he crossed his arms and stared at you, âJust nice?â
You laughed and walked up the stairs of the porch. It was cleaner than you thought it would be, no signs of aging on the wooden boards. âItâs a nice house, Joel. I just donât get why weâre here.â
He sighed and walked up to you, you took in a deep, centering, breath when he placed one hand on your waist. He moved you slightly out of the way as he leaned in, opening the door up behind you. âWeâre here âcause this is ours,â admittedly your eyes were on his lips and your focus was how close he was to you.Â
It took you a second to actually process what he had said. You blinked and your eyes shot back up to his, âWhat?â
He nudged you inside and you stumbled over your feet as you went. The interior was even nicer than the outside. There wasnât a spec of dust or decay, it was like time hadnât had a chance to touch it. There was a couch, bookshelves, even an old record player.Â
âJoel, what the hell are you talking about?â
He sighed and threw his backpack down on the ground. He walked over and took yours off your shoulders, nudging you to take a seat on the couch. âBeen working on this for months.â He smiled a little, the wrinkles in the corner of his eyes crinkling with the movement.
You were still a little confused, eyes darting around the living room as you sat there with a dumb look on your face. âLook, Jackson was nice for a while.â
You tuned in enough to grunt in opposition. Joel chuckled, âAlright, fine, it was never my favorite. I was out here one day, looking for you,â he added with a light nudge to your knee. âFound this place.â
âAnd⊠What? Decided to test out Jesusâs favorite pastime?â
âI was a contractor before the world went to shit. Like riding a bike, it just comes back to you.â
âI just donât understand. Why? Why put in the time and effort and materials?â
He scoffed, âWhy do you think?â When you didnât answer he rolled his eyes. âWe always talk about disappearinâ and I thought this would be a nice place to do it. Thereâs already a perimeter up, just have to make some more repairs. Worked something out with Tommy, itâs close enough to Jackson that we got some power from the dam,â he stood up now pacing around the living room a little as he talked to you.Â
You slowly became aware of the stupid grin growing on your face. The warmth that was spreading through your cheeks and stomach as you realized heâd done this, fixed up this old house for months in secret for you.Â
That explained why heâd been complaining about his back so much lately.Â
You stood up, cutting him off from his tangent about how you were still close enough to Jackson for supplies and to see Tommy and Elllie. You fisted your hands in the flannel he was wearing and tugged him down. âJoel.â
He smiled at you as his hands landed on your waist, squeezing a little. âYeah, sweetheart?â
âHave I ever told you I love you?â
He pulled you in and grinned, âNot once.â
This kiss felt different than all the rest. Felt like something more final, like you both knew youâd reached the end and there was nowhere left to go. Youâd explored all you could, fought your way here, and now you stood in this old house. The one he had fixed up and you knew you didnât need to fight anymore.Â
You just needed this, him in this moment.Â
âEllie?â
Ellie turned around at the sound of Dinaâs voice. âYeah?â
She nodded her head towards the patrol logbook, there was a strange smile on her face. âMight want to take a look at this.â
Ellie walked over, shooting Dina a confused glance before she took a look and let out a laugh.

How About a Nuke?
Part I / Part II / Part III / Part IV / Part V / Part VI
Cooper Howard x fem!reader, the ghoul x fem!reader A/N: I always appreciate your thoughts and comments on these chapters. I donât reply to every comment, mainly because Iâm cackling like an evil witch over your suffering Summary: Time split in two. Both sides of the same coin and neither of you can get your shit together.
âItâs been a pleasure working with you,â you held your hand out and shook Tomâs, though your experience with him was anything but wonderful. If you didnât need the exposure youâd never do another movie for him again. Cooper came up behind you and wrapped an arm around your waist.Â
âIâm sorry, Iâm just going to steal her for a minute.â
Tom waved his hand and went to track down another drink. You sank into Cooperâs arms, deflating with relief. âThank you,â you whispered.Â
He chuckled and the sound had shivers going down your spine. âNo problem at all, sweetheart.â He swept you out of the room and into one of the hallways of whoeverâs house you were at. Youâd stopped paying attention after about the fifth party youâd been dragged to. Working with Cooper had been a dream come true, but you hadnât realized just how much socializing youâd have to do.Â
He let go of you and you immediately missed the feeling of his arm around you. He provided you with a sense of protection youâd been severely lacking since you started acting. He was a shield against the greed of Hollywood.Â
You let yourself lean against the wall and he watched you with a keen eye, smiling slightly at how tired you looked. âDoing alright?â
You nodded before looking up and giving him a small smile. âJust need a little break, thatâs all.â
He rested against the wall opposite to you, tugging out a cigarette and offering you one. You shook your head and tried rolling out your shoulders to get rid of some of the lingering tension. He had a knowing look on his face when he spoke.Â
âIt was like that for me too when I first started out. No one really prepares you for how much ass you have to kiss in this industry.â
You let out a short laugh and rolled your eyes, âMy lips are chapped at this point. Iâve never had to stroke so many menâs egos in one night.âÂ
âI hope you donât feel like you have to do the same with me.â
You glanced up at Cooper and shook your head, âNo, youâre not like that.â
Fuck him, you thought. You didnât have to do what he said. You got up, prepared to duck your way through the fighting again, when you heard the unmistakable high pitched ringing of a bullet flying by and then you were launching forward.Â
âFuck!â Your hand flew to your arm, trying to stop the blood from oozing out of the graze on your arm. He hadnât left a hole but a good chunk of your bicep was splattered on the ground. Â
âNow, what did I tell you sweetheart?â You turned around to stare shocked at Cooper. He pointed to the ground with his gun. âGo ahead and sit your ass back down.â The warmth of the blood seeped out from between your fingers and your other hand clenched in rage.Â
âWhy donât you just go fuck yourself, Cooper?â He might not have had eyebrows anymore but you could still make out the way his muscles shifted in anger. Despite it all, you could still read him like a book.Â
You werenât going to let him think he could just continue to treat you however the hell he wanted. âWhat did you just say to me?â His voice was low, a dangerous tone that days before you might not have messed with. But you didnât care. Heâd shot you twice at this point, you couldnât bring yourself to give a shit about catering to his feelings right now.Â
Your hand reached towards the gun tucked in your pants. His eyes tracked the movement but he made no move to stop you. Slowly, you wrapped your fingers around the handle and you pointed the barrel right at him. He chuckled but there was no humor in the sound. âYouâre playing a dangerous game, sweetheart.â
âIf youâre gonna shoot me, go ahead and do it. But our partnership ends here.â You hoped he couldnât see the way your hand trembled or how the gun shook. You werenât sure, when the moment came, if you could actually kill him. Despite it all, you still saw the man you used to love in that face.Â
And despite what heâd told you about that man, you couldnât let yourself believe him. You couldnât afford to lose the last good memory you had. Youâre caught off guard when he clicks the hammer again and tucks the gun back in his holster.Â
Your eyes are wide with surprise but he just raises his hands in surrender. âGo ahead and leave, Iâm never one to linger where Iâm unwanted.â Well, thatâs a fucking lie. Still, you decide to take him at his word and slowly you tuck the gun away again.Â
âGoodbye, Cooper.â
He smirks, âGoodbye, darling.â
You should have known better. Youâve barely turned around before a rope is looped around your waist and dragging you to the ground and back towards him.Â
âThanks for having me over, Barb. Are you sure thereâs nothing I can do to help?â She shook her head and placed your cup of coffee on the table.Â
âWhat kind of hostess would I be if I asked that of you?â She gave you a kind smile and left to dart back into the kitchen. You fiddled with the table mat in front of you, feeling incredibly uncomfortable. Cooper came back in from the yard and waved you forward.Â
âCome on, sheâll be a while longer, itâs nicer out here.â You left your cup on the table and followed him outside. He led you to the pool, motioning for you to take a seat on one of the chairs. You appreciated how hospitable he and his wife were but you were feeling incredibly out of place in his home.Â
Cooper laughed and gave you a funny look. âYou donât look very comfortable over there.â
You shrugged and gave him a sheepish smile. âAm I that obvious?â
He shook his head, âNot to anyone else, maybe.â
âBut you know me a bit better than anyone else,â you finished the thought for him. He was right. He knew you better than anyone in Hollywood did. And you enjoyed it and loved how close you had gotten over the course of filming the movie. But you also hated it a little bit.
Cooper Howard had always been an on-screen crush for you and now face-to-face with him, the infatuation has gotten even worse. It made you feel awful every time Barb invited you over to their house. You were a guest in her home and halfway to being in love with her husband.
But who could blame you? He was kind and sophisticated, and he wasnât one of those Hollywood assholes who looked down on anybody who was deemed as below him.Â
And maybe you were mistaking his generosity for something else, but you swear he had a certain look in his eyes every time he stared at you.Â
You almost hoped that he didnât. You wanted this to be different from the other men you worked with. They always claimed they were in love with you. It didnât take long for them to realize that it was only lust and not love.Â
You wanted him to be different.Â
Maybe youâre a fool for thinking that there was still Prince Charmingâs around. But you would hold onto that hope for as long as you could.
âI fucking hate you. You know that?â
âWhy donât you shut your mouth, huh, sweetheart?â You hissed in pain as Cooper squeezed the rag around your arm even tighter. He grinned at the noise and tied the makeshift bandage off.Â
âYou should have just left me there.â He stood up and yanked your hands towards him. He used some of the rope to tie you up, leading you around on a leash like you were a damn dog.Â
âCouldnât do that.â
âYeah, why the hell not?â He finally looked at you, an angry set to his eyes. But he didnât respond, he just yanked on the rope and dragged you forward. You complied, only because of the way your shoulder pulsed with pain.
You wished he had left you in Filly instead of dragging you along behind him. He had already dealt with Ma June and gotten whatever the hell it is that he puffs on. You had no idea why he even needed you anymore.Â
You werenât of any use to him and itâs not like thereâs some big bounty on your head. Why keep you around? Why not give you both what you want and just let you go?
Maybe it was cruelty. Maybe the only thing he got out of it, was knowing that he was torturing you. That seemed like enough for a man like him.Â
You stared at the back of his head and felt hate burning in your gut. He was right. Cooper was gone, you couldnât even see him anymore. You didnât want to see him anymore.Â
âWeâll get along just fine if you keep that attitude of yours in check.â If you could still pull out your gun, youâd take your chance. Youâd shoot him dead if you could. Instead all you could do was longingly stare at it from where it was tucked in your bag.Â
He returned from where heâd been keeping watch, confident no one was going to bother them tonight. She sat with her back to him, the rope tied around the post of the old warehouse they were camped out in. Sheâd refused to talk to him since theyâd made camp for the night and it was slowly driving him insane.Â
Heâd made a decision when he went back for her. She belonged to him now, she wasnât leaving anytime soon. He didnât understand why she had to make all of this so hard.
He knelt down in front of her and she averted her eyes to a corner of the room behind him. He reached for the bandage on her arm and she jerked back, she looked at him at least, even if it was to glare. Heâd take progress where he could get it.Â
âYou want to let it fester and rot then be my guest.â She stared at him a moment longer before sighing and offering him her arm. He unwrapped the bandage and threw it to the ground. It was sopping wet with her blood and she winced at the noise it made when it landed, some blood sprayed off and hit her face. Heâd meant to just graze her, done a bit more damage than expected.Â
There was a large divot where muscle should be, he could nearly see bone poking through on the deepest bit. It was a wonder she hadnât been complaining the whole time they were walking. Heâs not sure how sheâs bearing the pain so well.Â
He needs to cauterize it before she loses more blood. He takes a glance at her face, the way her jaw is set, the cold look in her eyes everytime he so much as breathes. Thereâs no way this will go over very well, but thereâs no point in investing any time in her if she just dies of rot tomorrow.Â
He starts a fire in the area with the least visibility, heâs trying not to tempt any stragglers near them. Itâs not like he can rely on her to watch over him in the night, heâs sure if he handed her a knife sheâd slit his throat right now.Â
He pulls his machete out and lets the dull edge heat up before bringing it back over to her. Her eyes widen but she still doesnât say anything. And when he presses the edge into her wound and her skin sizzles and roasts she still doesnât utter a word.Â
But she bites down on something in her mouth so hard blood leaks out of the corner of her lips. Sheâs being real tempting right now, all bloodied and cooked, smelling like a nice meal. Maybe he should chop her up into little pieces, sheâll keep him fed for a while, thatâs for sure.Â
She starts panting, breathing heavy through her nose and he knows heâs kept this on here longer than necessary. Still, he canât help himself. He presses the blade a little deeper, lets it hit some uninjured skin just to see if she says anything. She only clenches her eyes shut and turns away from him.Â
Disappointed by the lack of response he backs off. âYouâre welcome,â he grouses.Â
âFuck. Off.â She spits the words out at him, droplets of blood flying off her lips as she does.Â
The way her eyes flare with anger shouldnât be as attractive as it is. But she has always been particularly pretty when sheâs pissed off at him. He licks the blood off his lips and grins. âSo she can talk.â
Her eyes well up with tears and he sits back, enjoying the sight of her breaking down. Sheâs caused enough trouble for him the past few days, sheâs just getting a taste of her own medicine.Â
Cooper swoops in, taking her hand and leading her around the dance floor. She grins up at him, eyes shining under the lights of the ballroom, once again heâs struck by just how gorgeous she is. âI should warn you,â she leans in like sheâs sharing a horrible secret and whispers, âIâm a terrible dancer.â
He takes her in, the pretty dress sheâs wearing and how well it suits her and shakes his head. âJust let me lead.â
Her laugh makes his heart race and all he wants to do is run away with her. Get her out of here and just have her all for his own, if only for a few hours. âDonât say I didnât warn you, mister.â The music picks up and he takes her through the steps he had to practice a dozen different times for a multitude of occasions, one including his wedding.Â
âDo you know how pretty you look tonight?â
She gives him a coy smile and shrugs. âIâve been told by a few men, but I think Iâd actually believe it if you said it.â
He leans down and kisses her. He shouldnât, he really shouldnât, but he canât help himself. Sheâs as soft as heâd imagined, shy and confused, but she doesnât stop him. He feels her lean in and he slowly parts from her. âYou look beautiful.â She pulls away from him, eyes wide and lips parted from shock. He sees the shine on her lips, the slight way theyâve swelled up and he wants to lean in again but heâs interrupted.Â
âCut!â Sam walks over to them, a big grin on his face and claps Cooper on the shoulder. âI love the improv, Coop, weâre gonna do this again. Keep the kiss.â Cooper nods and waits for him to walk off before he turns back to her.Â
He offers her an apologetic smile. âI hope that didnât bother you, darling. It felt right for the scene.â Not a complete lie, it did work better than whatever the writers had chosen for the next few minutes of dialogue. But truly, he was just fulfilling his own selfish desires.Â
She seems to blink herself out of some sort of daze. She shakes her head and steps away from him, he lets his hands fall down to his sides, already missing the feeling of her. âNo, not at all. Good call, Coop.â His name on her lips sounds like music to his ears, especially that breathy way she says it when sheâs nervous.Â
He sighs and rubs a hand down his face. What the fuck is he doing? He shouldnât have kissed her. He definitely shouldnât have pushed to get her this role, either, knowing she was going to be his love interest. He knows sheâs been trying to step back from these types of things. But he also knows that sheâd take any role he offered her.Â
He shouldnât be taking advantage of that, but he canât help himself. He finds that he wants to be near her, always. He wants to listen to her ramble and have her there to read scripts with, he just wants her around him constantly. It used to be purely platonic. The respectful relationship between a mentor and mentee. But sheâd figured out how to navigate this world on her own.Â
Soon, he worried she wouldnât need him anymore. Or want him around. He takes every opportunity he can to have her on set and itâs only recently that heâs noticed the physical attraction. He takes his hand off his face and glances to the side.Â
Barb is there, but she hadnât been watching. Sheâs busy talking to one of the PAâs. He takes in a deep breath and gets back on his mark. If he messes up a few times, just so he can kiss her again, who could blame him?
âCat got your tongue?â
You have a dozen different remarks, but youâre too drained to go through this routine again. You can tell heâs getting angrier the longer you ignore him. Good! Heâs shot you twice, you didnât exactly owe him the satisfaction of your conversation.Â
Your arm is throbbing, a dull pain that you can feel deep in your bones. You keep shifting, trying to ease some of the pressure off of it, but with the bindings around your wrist itâs nearly impossible. You want to cry, scream, fight. You want to do anything, but heâs bound you and you feel like a beaten down dog.Â
Your tailsâ been cropped and youâre just going through endless rounds of fighting until youâre useless enough to be put down. You donât see a way out of this. And even if there was, even if you did escape, youâd still have the rest of the Wastelands to get through.Â
He stands up and moves next to you. He throws himself down with a thud and digs around in your bag. âNo rations left, huh?â You close your eyes and let your head thunk back against the pole youâve been leashed to. He grabs his own bag and pulls out his foul smelling jerky.Â
He dangles it under your nose, slapping your cheeks with it a few times until you open up your eyes. He grins, yellowed teeth making you nauseous, âThere are those pretty eyes. Come on, open up sweetheart, ass jerky ainât gonna eat itself.â
Your nose scrunches up in disgust and you turn your head away. âHey!â He snaps and you jump. âIâm being generous here, now, open your damn mouth.â
âWhyâd you shoot me?â You spit it out, rushed and near incoherent. Itâs a desperate attempt to distract him so you donât have to eat what is confirmed human meat. That could have been you today, had you not woken up before that creepy old couple got to you.Â
He takes a moment, contemplating his answer. âThought you were the raider.â
âWhy?â
He rolled his eyes and the jerky, thankfully, dropped back into his lap. âI heard someone in pain. You donât have a great track record, sweetheart, I figured someone had gotten you again.â
Indignant anger bubbled up in your gut and you moved as far away from him as you possibly could. Though, it was only a few inches. âYou didnât think I could defend myself. It wasnât even a consideration?âÂ
You knew how to shoot a gun, and you knew how to fight back. But shouldnât there be a bit of grace considering a few days ago the entire world wasnât fucking insane? You think youâve handled yourself exceptionally well considering everything thatâs been thrown at you.Â
Thereâs no hesitation in his answer, âNo.â
âWell,â you spit the words out like you want to wound him with them, âyou were wrong.â
To your surprise he smiles. It seems genuine enough, appreciative even, but you canât trust him anymore. You never should have trusted him to begin with apparently. âThat I was.â You wished you could smack the smug look off his face. He was acting like he had anything to do with your fighting or surviving that fight. Despite what happened with the raiders, you were capable of protecting yourself.
That woman was already bleeding out and on the ground before he had interrupted. âWhat the fuck do you want from me, Cooper?â His hand twitched towards his gun and he glared at you. You rolled your eyes and sighed, âOh grow the fuck up, I said your name, shoot me or get over it. Iâm not gonna play this game with you anymore. Iâm not gonna let you walk all over me and Iâm not going to continue to cater to your temper.â
He wasnât angry, though, he was grinning. Making a noise that bordered on a laugh. âSomeone found their fight again, it seems.â
Your jaw clenched and you kicked at him. He grunted at the impact and you felt a little bit of satisfaction flare up, âAnswer the question.â
He shook his head and shrugged. âI donât know. I donât particularly like you, but I canât seem to let you go either.â
âWell,â you scoffed, âyou sure know how to make a girl swoon, donât you.â Your wrists itched within the confines of their bindings and you pictured strangling him with the very rope he had you tied up with.Â
âYou wanted the truth.â
âDid you enjoy yourself?âÂ
Cooper wrapped his arms around Barbâs waist, he leaned in to kiss her but she dodged away from him. He let out a heavy sigh, already dreading this conversation, and backed up. âWhat are you talking about?â
She whirled around on him and glared, âDo not pretend you donât know what Iâm talking about.â He shook his head and walked over to the bar cart, pouring himself a glass of something that would hopefully calm him enough for another fight. Theyâd been fighting a lot lately.Â
He knew what this one was going to be about. Her, but theyâd been having issues long before this attraction started up. She just wanted something to use against him, to make him the bad guy. She just couldnât ever handle hearing the truth about herself.Â
But he wasnât going to make it easy for her. He was sick of rolling over and just letting her have what she wanted for the sake of peace. âGive me something to work with here, Barb.â
She scoffed and shook her head muttering, âUnbelievable,â under her breath. âShoving your tongue down her throat, thatâs what Iâm talking about!â
Cooper winced, âLower your voice, Janey is-â
âDo not,â she held up a hand to silence him. âDo not bring our daughter into this. Answer the damn question.â
He let out a humorless laugh and held up his hands. âI don't know what you want. Youâve never had a problem with this before. Itâs a part of my fucking job, Barb, what the hell do you want?â
She shook her head and pinched the bridge of her nose. âJust admit it, Coop, sheâs different. We both know it, this isnât some scripted kiss. You wanted it!â Of course he did. At least she actually liked him, appreciated him, made him feel something other than shame and frustration. She didnât manipulate him at every opportunity like Barb did.Â
âLower your goddamn voice!â He snapped, heat rushing to his cheeks in anger. âI am married to you, you are my wife, not her. I love you, okay, Barb. I donât know where this is coming from, or why youâre choosing now to bring this up. But Iâve had a long day and I donât want us to go to bed angry.â
She shook her head again and paced the length of the living room. âCooper, I canât-â
The phone ringing interrupted her. She looked at it like she knew who was calling and waved her hand to dismiss him. âWe will continue this,â he walked towards the phone and took it off the hook. âWhat?â
He regretted how short he sounded when he heard her on the other line. She sounded a little confused and like she was sorry for bugging him. âCoop? Sorry, is this a bad time?â He glanced over his shoulder at Barb but she wasnât looking at him anymore.Â
He let out a deep sigh and tried to reign in his temper, âNo, sweetheart, whatâs up?âÂ
âOh, well a few of us figured weâd go out and get some drinks. I wanted to see if you wanted to join us, or if you could give me a ride?â
He let the phone droop to his cheek and glanced at Barb again. She was already making her way towards the bedroom. âMake your choice, Cooper,â she called over her shoulder.Â
She piped up on the other end, âCoop?â
He glanced down at the phone again before he shook his head and brought it back up to his ear. âYeah, Iâll be right over, honey. Let me just grab my jacket.â
âYou remember that first movie we did together?â He leaned back against the wall, arm propped up on his knee and gazing out at the Wasteland. âPassed a poster for it in this old movie theater a week ago.â He glanced over at her and nudged her shoulder. âMust have been a sign, huh?â
Her voice was a hoarse croak that he nearly didnât understand. âDid you ever love me?â The question came out of nowhere, catching him slightly off guard.
Anger flared through him. He turned to glare at her but she wouldnât look at him. She had the audacity to ask something that fucking stupid and then she couldnât even look at him?
âHey,â she sighed and turned to face him. ââCourse I did. Why the hell would you say that?â
She snorted and shook her head. âSeriously?â He nodded and she sighed. âYou told me you didnât. All I was, was a hole to fill.â
He ran a hand down his face and shrugged. âI donât know what you want me to tell you sweetheart.â
âHow about the truth,â she gave him a sharp look and he laughed. She was real cute when she was trying to be threatening.Â
âAlright. You want some advice? Everyone in the Wastelands lies. Canât trust a thing anyone says.â
She nodded but he should know better than to think she would give up so easy. âSo, I canât believe you now then?â She must have thought she was real clever. He was getting a little sick of this back and forth. She needed to learn to just listen to him, sheâd get a lot farther a lot faster that way.Â
âConsider this the one exception.âÂ
âAnd here I thought you didnât like to drink, sweetheart.â She let out a drunken giggle and slumped further against Cooper. He glanced at her and laughed. Her eyes were barely open and she kept pointing at something but refused to tell him what it was she was talking about. âKeys?â
She lifted her purse but it dropped to the ground before he could grab it from her. Cooper sighed and propped her against her door, he leaned down to grab the bag and dug around until he found the keys. He noticed the little key chain he got her dangling from them and smiled.Â
A mini revolver, to commemorate their first movie together. It was cute that she had kept it, he hadnât really expected her too. Then again, heâs kept every ridiculous gag gift sheâs gotten him. âAlright, letâs get you to bed.â She threw an uncoordinated arm over his shoulder and let her feet drag while he tried to corral her into her apartment.Â
âWork with me, honey, come on.â She finally lifted her feet enough to stumble into her bedroom. He closed the door and heard a loud thud. âShit,â he ran into her room but sheâd only tossed her shoes across the room.Â
âI donât drink,â she slurred, eyes red and cheeks puffy.Â
He chuckled and nodded his head. He hoped to get her lucid enough just long enough to get her tucked into bed. He was tired and going to get drinks had been a mistake. He wasnât in the mood to try and entertain a group of people with tales of his glamorous Hollywood experience. Honestly, heâd gone just to talk to her, but sheâd been in more of a mood to party than he had expected.Â
âDonât trust anyone.â He grabbed the sleeves of her jacket, helping her out of it and trying not to laugh at how much she struggled with them. âJust you,â she hummed, giving him a smile even though her eyes were closed and she was a second away from passing out.
âThatâs real sweet, why donât you get in bed?â She nodded and threw herself down against the pillows. Cooper sighed and got up to get her trash can out of the bathroom, dropping it by the side of her bed in case she needed it.Â
He glanced down at her, taking in the serene expression she held when she slept. It was so different to the usual way she kept herself guarded, she seemed so vulnerable in moments like these. He brushed the hair off her face and turned the light off. It made him feel good to know that she felt safe with him.Â
He could never be with her the way that he wanted to, but at the very least he could protect her from the people who would just take what he wanted.Â
âI donât think I can do this on my own,â she whispered. She shifted again, tugging at the bindings once more. Annoyed at her constant fidgeting he reached over and loosened them slightly. His fingers lingered on the reddened marks on her wrist, he pressed lightly on them and she shivered.Â
He let her go and sat back against the post. âI know.â
âI stupidly thought I would find something in Filly. I think I was trying to prove something to myself, but I canât do this. I need help, but Iâm not gonna let you treat me like some pet you didnât want.âÂ
He sighed and she turned to look at him. When he really took her in, actually paid attention to her, he could see how tired she was. That sort of bone deep tired that you only get after a lot of bad days. Heâs sure thatâs what this was, itâs how it was for him when he first started out on his own.Â
He didnât have anyone to help him or guide him, he figured it out on his own. It made him smarter, stronger, turned him into somebody that no one was going to fuck with. She was a lot different than him, though.Â
âAlright.â
âYouâre going to help me,â she held out her hands and he understood the gesture for what it was. A test, to see if he was true to his word, if you could actually believe him.Â
He grinned and yanked her closer, reveling in the way she winced at the ropes burning the open wounds. âIâve had a taste of you now, sweetheart, I wonât be letting you go anytime soon.â She doesnât flinch when he pulls out his knife, not even when he presses it against the tender skin of her wrist.
Thereâs trust in her eyes, a hesitant trust, but it was there. He slices through the knot of rope and wraps the rest of it up to put back in his bag. She lets out a sigh of relief and rubs at the irritated patches of skin. âI really did love you, you know?â
Heâs sick of this. Heâs sick of how sad she sounds, how tired. Itâs barely been a week and sheâs already starting to give up. He's already made the decision to keep her around, heâs not one to go back on his word. But sheâs making it real hard to not just knock her out and shut her up. âYeah, yeah,â he muttered, âso did I.â
She scoffed, âNo. You didnât, not like I did.â
His hand clenches at his side in frustration. Whatâs it gonna take to drill this into her head? He grabs her by the chin and yanks her forward, the leather of his glove smushing her lips together. âI loved you. You donât get to doubt that and you donât get to doubt me.â
Heâs darting forward before she can shove him back. Her hands hang limply between them and she gasps in surprise when he presses their lips together. Itâs not altogether pleasant, her lips cracked and bloodied and his have long since turned to leather.Â
But that familiar passion he once held for her sparks up and he shoves forward. She whimpers and lets herself fall back, hands grabbing at his jacket and tugging him closer. He used to treat her gently, savor their time together like theyâd never have another chance. It always felt like that, they were one moment away from losing each other. He supposes heâd been right, their time was short.Â
Who they were now were two different people to who theyâd been. He bites down on her lip hard enough to draw blood and pulls back. Sheâs staring up at him, shocked and flustered. He canât tell if she wants to kiss him again or slap him. He doesnât give her a chance to choose, he licks her blood off his lips and drops her to the ground.
She groans as her head slams against the floor, sand and dust billowing out from under her. âYou should get some rest. Weâve got a long walk tomorrow.â He leaves her there in the dirt, lets her linger in the feeling of his rejection. He rubs at his lips and savors the taste of her blood on his tongue.Â

Would you ever write for Charles lee Ray(Chucky human form) Brahms Heelshire, Hannible(from movie and show?
The last two, yes. But no- no part of me could ever be attracted to Chucky (human form or not.) I have a deep-seated fear of dolls/mannequins, to a childish degree. I used to cry as a kid if my dolls were facing my bed because I was so terrified of them. Chucky is not my jam.
