the silly
It’s MORPH’n time! I am loving Morph in X-Men ‘97! Very much enjoying what JP Karliak is bringing to the role and read a really great theory about how Morph uses his new neutral/blank face to mask his trauma. In ep 3 you can see how he reverts to his old face when talking about Sinister, and then immediately changes back to the blank face. If that’s true it would be a deep and fascinating choice for the character and I love it. So here’s my take on Morph, and one last, not so secret sneak peek at the last member of the team illustration. I wonder who it could be…
Imma need y'all to hear my out on this
it's logan moping about jean and an idolized relationship that was always doomed to fail while morph is right there and understand logan better than anyone can. it's how morph knew that the way to get logan out of his funk was not talking but by getting into a sparring session and logan doesn't even realize that what he really wants is right in front of him while simultaneously saying shit like "morph is the only one who could make me laugh" in this essay i will-
My thoughts on X-Men 97 (spoilers below)
Congratulations Morph on making it into the opening credits! Congratulations to Bishop and Magneto, too, but Morph is like the little redshirt that could, they went from "killed off two episodes in" to opening credits main character. You are the Guy Fleegman of X-Men TAS Morph, even if you are a not a guy. They even did a "threatened by Sinister" montage for them.
Thank you, Gambit, for bringing back crop tops for men, you are a fashion god. And the very first scene with Gambit is him in the kitchen making beignets.
Jubilee getting to be the experienced X-Man welcoming the new kid who was saved from kidnapping is a nice call back and kind of "full circle" for her.
Fantastic sequence of them fighting Sentinels, especially Cyclops doing the whole "optic blast his way to the ground" thing. And he could have gotten one of the flyers to catch him, he just wanted to be cool.
Nice to finally see Morph and Wolverine banter when Morph isn't being set up for a tragic death or brainwashed/filled with angst. No, now Logan is the one filled with angst, because he can't deal with pregnant (with Scott's baby) Jean.
Sunspot with his little glow sticks, and Jubilee dancing at the club is adorable.
Sunspot's card that he gave to Jubilee is the most 90's thing ever, look at those graphics.
Storm. I saw that "Lifedeath I and II" was part of the episode titles for future episodes, so I knew it was coming, but damn. It was extremely well done. Having her take the hit for Magneto instead of Rogue makes sense, and is another example of TAS writers combining comics stories (Storm's power loss and trial of Magneto) really effectively.
I kind of like that, after Cyclops gets beaten down by X-Cutioner, Morph is the one who jumps in to save him. Like, despite being a sarcastic little shit and all the previous bad blood, Morph's got Scott's back.
Wolverine driving Jean to the hospital, and Rogue using her powers to absorb "baby delivery skills" was all great. "He's coming!" "Who?! Apocalypse?" "The baby!!" And then Jean just telekinetically slapping Wolverine with his jacket and jeep keys.
One Jean? Two Jean! (Red Jean....Blue Jean?)
I'm surprised we've got a Jean double already, I expected that the show would drag it out much longer before showing Maddie. I am wondering if Madelyne will have been programmed to believe that she is also Jean, and there will be confusion over the "real" Jean. I am very, very curious as to where they will go with the Madelyne Pryor story, especially since Goblin Queen will presumably show up at some point.
X-Men TAS: Courage
While I really appreciate that they tried a “Morph comes back episode,” probably to quiet any fans like me going, “Where’s Morph? It’s been like, 2 seasons!” it’s weird to me that Morph’s big issue to deal with is “Fear of Sentinels,” not “Dissociative Identity Disorder, guilt and self-loathing over their actions towards their team-mates, and the lingering trauma of the long-term physical and psychological abuse inflicted by Sinister.”
It’s pretty understandable that Morph would now have a fear response to giant robots that literally killed them, which their shape-shifter powers aren’t super effective against, but everything that Sinister did was so much worse, and probably inflicted significantly more damage. I’m just going to assume that most of Morph’s time on Muir Island was dealing with all that, whereas the PTSD from their death wasn’t as obvious until they actually encountered Sentinels in the field again.
Of course, the simpler, more obvious explanation is that “Morph gets over their fear of Sentinels” is much easier to write as a plot to a half-hour kids cartoon than “Morph deals with the absolute mess of fucked up shit that Sinister put them through.”
Honestly all versions of Morph/Changeling are really interesting i hope we can get more canon of him in any of the universes
I think it’s very interesting, as I kinda mentioned in my last post, that Changeling seems to be much older than his AU counterparts. When we seem him as Changeling and once out of uniform, he seems to be at least Xavier’s age or older:
TAS series Morph sometimes looks older:
Probably because they were modeled off Changeling, but the animation isn’t consistent, and they sometimes look younger:
TAS Morph’s voice and overall personality also seem younger, and Wolverine calls them “kid” a couple of times, so I generally assume that they are supposed to be somewhere vaguely in their twenties like most of the other adult X-Men.
AoA Morph doesn’t have a clear age, although the characters acknowledge that he was previously Changeling. And Exiles Morph gets his age retconned all the way back to being a teenager alongside the New Mutants:
Given that we have AU’s where Avalanche and Toad are teenagers named Lance Alvers and Todd Tolensky, and we have a hilariously young Sebastian Shaw in the X-Campus universe, it’s not unheard of for alternate universe counterparts to have wildly different ages. 616 Changeling might just be the Kevin Sidney whose parents had him earlier.
But I have a kind of wild idea (not even really a headcanon), that maybe Changeling was, like the original idea for Mr. Sinister, a young shape-shifter pretending to be much older. Like he was playing-acting as a super-villain. It would also explain why he turned heroic so quickly, if he was basically a teenager going through a villain phase. Changeling put on a goofy purple helmet and joined a terrorist group the same way other teens listen to MCR and put on lots of eyeliner. It would also be completely on-brand for Xavier to read all that in Changeling’s mind, and be like, “Well, we don’t have time to unpack all that. Get in the chair and pretend to be me, I’ll be in the basement.”
That was gorgeous i'm tearing up
I have posted a little bit about this before, but I finally read some very old X-Men issues to learn the brief history of the Changeling, the character who got retooled into Morph my beloved.

This is not a Morph post. This is a Quentin post.
Deal with it
NO BECAUSE I WANNA KNOW WHERE THEY CAME FROM???
If I had a nickle everytime these were my favourite characters i'd have two nickles.
If I had a nickel for every time a cheerful, silly, “jester” type character was abandoned by their friends and came back as a bitter, twisted version of themselves with messed up hair and dark marks under their eyes, I’d have two nickels, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
(Also they both ultimately get redeemed and then go off away from the main cast for a long time to recover.)
For Morph

Your child obsesses over Morph from X-Men: the Animated Series because he risked his life for Wolverine who would’ve survived being hit by that Sentinel because of his healing factor but the only thing that mattered to Morph in those few seconds was that his friend was in danger so he threw it all away to save LOGAN-
