learning that people want you in their lives is a skill you can develop if it does not come naturally

Camus: If someone here told me to write a book on morality, it would have a hundred pages and ninety-nine would be blank. On the last page I should write: “I recognize only one duty, and that is to love.” And, as far as everything else is concerned, I say no.

The Moon That Turns You Back, Hala Alyan

“Believe me, what you want is someone to have dinner with. Sleep with from time to time, telephone every day or write. It’s what you set up that is defeating. Make it very modest. And give yourself permission to make a few mistakes. You know, blow it a bit. Have a few drinks and fall into bed with somebody. It doesn’t have to be the final thing.”

EAT EMPTINESS IF IT EATS AT YOU

SYMPATHETIC MAGIC IS STRONGEST ON YOURSELF, YOU ARE YOUR ITERATED DOUBLE

(IT TAKES TIME)

YOU ARE SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE NETWORK OF THE SYSTEMS THAT AT ONCE GIVE YOU A LIFE AND MAKE IT YOURS; TO UNDERSTAND AND UTILIZE THEM WILL NOT IMPRISON YOU IN THE MONOTONOUS END OF YOUR DESPERATE-TO-COME-ALIVE POETICS AND UNRECREATABLE GESTALT MEANINGS BUT RENDER THE PHYSICS OF YOUR WORLD A REARTICULATABLE MEDIUM ON WHICH TO KNEAD AND BAKE THE RESTLESSNESS YOU ARE TRYING TO SEEK IN THE GLOW OF THE EMERGENCY EXIT, I.E., YOU DONT NEED TO KNOW THE NARRATIVE TO NARRATE

IT MIGHT HELP TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE RUNNING FROM

FLOODED PLAIN; HOLD FAST

INSIST ON A JOY THAT IS UNFORGETTABLE

REDUCE THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH YOU LOOK BACK

KEEP DANCING

the truth is u have to be vulnerable and expose yourself to the possibility of being hurt in order to find love and form meaningful connections there is no easy way out

Words By Me

having to come to terms with the fact that love is not an everlasting performance in which you attempt to retain the attention of your significant other but rather a release of control and putting faith into them and trusting them to choose to stay with you no matter what you have to offer

“Please don’t expect me to always be good and kind and loving. There are times when I will be cold and thoughtless and hard to understand.”

— Sylvia Plath

It’s weird to grow up in a family where you know you’re loved but you don’t feel loved. And then later in adulthood you understand how almost impossible it seems to cross that distance and let yourself experience closeness, how otherworldly love feels now and how love feels unbearable at times. You flinch when someone tries to wholeheartedly love you. And over and over you see so clearly how you cannot be loved unless it's from afar and love is mixed with that familiar sensation of distance and coldness.

“She has the feeling, all her life, that she never makes sense. There is something else, big and dark, at the edge of what she knows, she cannot say. She always has the feeling she is translating into broken english. Language all her life is a second language, the first is mute & exists.”

Sharon Thesen, Mean Drunk Poem

Now consider, Felice, in view of this uncertainty, it is difficult to say the word, and indeed it is bound to sound rather strange. Clearly, it’s too soon to say it. But afterwards, it would be too late: there wouldn’t be any time to discuss matters of the kind you mentioned in your last letter. But there also isn’t time for endless hesitations, at least this is what I feel about it, and so I ask: In view of the above—alas, irremediable—conditions, will you consider whether you wish to be my wife? Will you do that?

— Franz Kafka asking Felice Bauer to marry him (Letters to Felice)

You came into my life – not as one comes to visit (you know, ‘not taking one’s hat off’) but as one comes to a kingdom where all the rivers have been waiting for your reflection, all the roads, for your steps.

— Vladimir Nabokov, Letters to Véra

How can I explain to you, my happiness, my golden, wonderful happiness, how much I am all yours – with all my memories, poems, outbursts, inner whirlwinds?

Nothing touches a work of art so little as words of criticism : they always result in more or less fortunate misunderstandings. Things aren’t all so tangible and sayable as people would usually have us believe; most experiences are unsayable, they happen in a space that no word has ever entered, and more unsayable than all other things are works of art, those mysterious existences, whose life endures beside our own small, transitory life.

Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet (translation by Stephen Mitchell)

“Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and they will come forth, later, in uglier ways.”

— Sigmund Freud
