You tugged at the hem of your skirt nervously before entering the café. You could see the owner, Sunoo, setting things up in the back whilst Sunghoon served some customers who had taken a seat in the window. Jay was behind the counter, leaning against one of the cupboards and fiddling with the sleeves on his jumper. It was a cute cream knitted jumper today.

His ears twitched softly at the sound of the door opening and he turned to see who was there, an automatic smile that he wore for all customers spread across his face until he realised who it was. His eyes widened in panic, remembering that you probably thought he was avoiding you yesterday, and he tried to make his cheeks cool off before you reached the counter.

The two of you looked equally as nervous, looking anywhere but at each other. You went up to the counter after deciding on your order, smiling at him genuinely. Jay instantly relaxed, smiling back at you.

“Hey Y/N!” He said brightly, tapping at the screen in front of him to get ready to take your order, “how are you today?” He looked back up at you expectantly.

“Better now that you’re not hiding from me,” you teased, pouting out your bottom lip mockingly. Jay flushed red in embarrassment, starting to stutter out an excuse before you cut him off, “I’m just teasing you, I’m not mad. As long as you don’t hate me.”

“I don’t hate you!” He rushed out a bit too quickly, “I don’t hate you, I was just really shy I guess. I’m sorry for that.”

“Don’t be sorry, I was also a bit shy to talk to you if that makes you feel any better,” you replied, a reassuring smile on your lips. Jay nodded, his cheeks still a little red.

“What can I get for you today?” He asked, typing on his screen.

“I’ll have an iced tea, and could you do an iced black coffee for Jake. I promised I’d get him something on the way to work,” you said, taking out your wallet to pay.

As you were getting your card out you felt a hand enclose over yours to stop you, glancing up to see Sunoo standing next to you. He had a mop in one hand and the other holding yours.

“These are on the house, to make up for yesterday,” Sunoo said, you tried to protest but he shut you down immediately. “Don’t try to argue, I’m the boss so I make the decisions here.”

You nodded softly, “thanks Sunoo, that’s really kind of you.”

Jay had gone to make your drinks, busying himself whilst you chatted to Sunoo. He didn’t know why but a flash of jealousy went through him the moment Sunoo touched your hand. He blamed it on his looming heat, he always felt more possessive and stressed around the week before his heat started. But why was he so possessive over you? He hadn’t felt that way about anyone in a long time, and the heat suppressants that May had him on would supress those emotions as well. So why had this started now?

He shook away his thoughts, ears flicking in annoyance until Sunoo let you go, returning to the cleaning he was doing. Jay took your drinks over, your name scribbled on one and Jake’s name on the other, you smiled at the little cat drawing he’d done on your cup.

“Thanks Jay,” you said, grabbing the plastic cups from him and taking a sip of your drink. You glanced at your phone and, as much as you wished to stay and chat, you noticed some texts from May. Deciding to wait until you were outside to answer, you tucked your phone away and hooked your bag over your shoulder whilst juggling the two drinks.

“Do you need help with those?” He asked, watching you balance the two cups in one hand. Jay had the urge to reach out and help you, but he resisted it. You were hardly acquaintances, let alone friends. He didn’t want to overstep any boundaries.

“I’m ok, thanks Jay. I’ll see you next time, yeah?” You smiled, turning away from him before he could reply and walking towards the exit.

“Come back soon!” Jay called out as the door was closing, catching sight of your bright smile as you did so.

Jay busied himself with cleaning up whilst he willed his heart to slow down, Sunghoon coming up to him behind the counter and slinging an arm over his shoulder. Jay groaned, shrugging him off once in a futile attempt since he knew the younger would immediately return his arm to his shoulder.

“Your cheeks are still red Jongseongie,” Sunghoon teased, tugging at one of his ears. “And these lil things keep twitching, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you had a little crush?”

“Shut up Sunghoon,” he mumbled, pressing the back of his hands to his cheeks. “It’s just really warm in here is all.”
