I just had a truly horrible realization. I was talking about the worldbuilding in fma with someone the other day, and they mistakenly said it took place during the Victorian era, or Amestris’s equivilant to it.

I, being a lover of fashion history as well as an insufferable pedant, corrected them by saying that both the year(s) it takes place in as well as many of the technological and cultural influences seen in the world are actually more in line with the subsequent, much shorter era known as the…

the Edwardian era.

God fucking dammit.

[ID: Digital Doodles Depicting Serizawa Katsuya And Reigen Arataka From Mob Psycho 100. The First Is

[ID: Digital doodles depicting Serizawa Katsuya and Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100. The first is a redraw of "The bride and the ugly ass groom" image featuring the toy of Princess Cadence and Shining Armor from MLP, with Serizawa taking the place of Cadence and Reigen replacing Shining Armor. They're wearing their outfits from the official Mob Psycho 100 wedding art, and the caption has been changed to "the groom and the ugly ass groom". The next four drawings have them in their human forms, showcasing the following from left to right: the two holding each other as they happily display their wedding bands, Serizawa sleepily shuffling with a blanket around his shoulders and a cup of coffee in hand as his aura drags a still sleeping Reigen out of bed, Reigen saying "'Scuze me, he asked for no pickles" as Serizawa nervously peeks over his shoulder, and Serizawa preforming an exorcism while saying, "Excuse me, he asked for no spirits" as Reigen cowers behind him. End ID]

I'm thinking about this idea a bit more, and I think instead of Shigeo enrolling into UA, even if the General Studies course, I'd like to see Teru take a crack at it actually. Shigeo's off in a non-heroics high school just working on bettering himself while Teru goes straight for UA's Hero course, after all he's worked with Seasoning City's totally legitimate hero and psychic Reigen Arataka.

Teru's already had his development in middle school, and now he gets to impart this wisdom upon the kids of UA, he's an amazing fighter with excellent control over his powers (are they still psychic powers or a Quirk here I haven't decided yet) but most importantly he's a great rescue hero. He always makes sure to get civilians to safety and does what he can to subdue threats, he's gotten plenty of practice in after all the stuff that's gone down in Seasoning after all.

Guys.

Y’all.

I…

I just. I just… i have discovered something. And I have laughed too much. I have laughed every time I have tried to explain it to someone. I cannot get through this.

Look. Okay.

There are two things you need to know, here.

First: There’s a style of Greek pottery that was popular during the Hellenic period, for which most of the surviving examples are from southern Italy. We call them β€˜fish plates’ because, well, they’re plates, and they’re decorated with fish (and other marine life).

Like this one, currently in the Met:

photo of a fish plate from above. it is a black disk with fish designs in red. There are two bream and a torpedo fish around a central divot in the plate. there are also smaller illustrations of a mussel, a murex, and a articulately impressively executed shrimp.

Or this one, currently in the Cleveland Museum of Art:

another fish plate from above. It had a large octopus, several large bream fish decorated with dots and stripes, as well as tiny details such as shells and even some tiny octopuses.

They’re very cool. We’re not 100% sure what they were for, because most of the surviving ones were found as grave goods, but that’s a different post.

The second thing you need to know is that when we (Classics/archaeology/whatever as a discipline) have a collection of artefacts, like vases, sculptures, paintings, etc. and we do not know the name of the artist, but we’re pretty sure one artist made X, Y and Z artefacts, we come up with a name for that artist. There are a whole bunch of things that could be the source for the name, e.g. where we found most of their work (The Dipylon Master) or the potter with whom they worked (the Amasis Painter), a favourite theme (The Athena Painter), the Museum that ended up with the most famous thing they did (The Berlin Painter) or a notable aspect of their style. Like, say, The Eyebrow Painter.

Guess what kind of pottery the Eyebrow Painter made?

photo of a fish plate depicting two fish and an eel. they all have eyebrows. The fish have arched eyebrows that make them look angry, the eel's eyebrows give it a slightly confused appearance.
a fish plate with a torpedo fish and two other fish. They all have eyebrows that make them look angry. The torpedo fish also has an open mouth, making it look like it is shouting about something.
another fish plate. this one had an eel, a torpedo fish, and another fish. The fish looks angry, but the eel and the torpedo fish both have open mouths full of teeth and appear to be grinning, with eyebrows that make them look like they're gonna cause some trouble.
