Like no, author, the immature teenage boy that grew up in a society of toxic masculinity is NOT going to know that bad ways of dealing with pain are called “harmful coping mechanisms,” or that their friends’ desperate actions are “trauma responses.” He’s going to understand it through a completely different lens. His understanding won’t be any less sophisticated or meaningful, but it certainly won’t be clinical and academic.
