Seeker: Mitochondria Aren’t Just the Powerhouse of the Cell

Mitochondria are so much more than the powerhouse of the cell. In this episode, Patrick explores why this organelle is so unique and introduces new research that you probably didn’t hear about in school.

I revisited one of the first regionals I designed for the region which was a plant version of the Solosis line. This line is specifically designed after how a seed is formed to parallel with the original Solosis line referencing a fetus. This process is called plant embryogenesis which starts with a zygote but then the embryo grows long, leading to a heart stage where cotyledons start to form. Cotyledons are like the meaty part of a bean as they are the first "leaves" the plant would later use to grow out of the ground and before the plant could actually photosynthesize.

Solosis (Grass): Although their exterior is very tough, they can still absorb water which they store in the vacuole they sit on. One can tell how well-watered a Solosis is by looking at the size and shape of their vacuole.

Duosion (Grass): Duosion becomes separated with their other compartment which is now used to bring up nutrients from the ground. Although the tops of Duosions can photosynthesize, they get most of their energy from their bottom compartment.

Reuniclus (Grass): When Reunicli of this kind shake hands, they can transfer over some of the food they have stored in their hands. Despite their tough exterior, the internal membrane around the body can expand to store more water.

Removing Troublemakers

A few rotten apples shouldn’t ruin the whole bunch. With millions of cells in the body, it’s inevitable that some will make a misstep and need to be quietly removed. Extrusion is one method for such a dismissal, when a rogue cell is squeezed out of a layer of cells with minimal disruption to its neighbours (pictured, centre pink cell being extruded from the green embryo of a microscopic worm). A new study investigated genetic activity linked to extrusion, and revealed that the process is triggered when cells falter in the midst of DNA replication and cell division. Such errors can prompt cancer development, so removing these cells might be an intrinsic cancer-prevention technique. Further experiments in human cells revealed the involvement of a well-known cancer suppressor protein called p53, showing the body aims to cull cancerous cells before they get going.

I think what breaks me the most about the scene where Luz opens up is that the whole thing is Luz trying not to be a burden. The whole thing is Luz saying “it was a long time ago,” or “not an issue anymore” or “I was dumb.”

It’s the way she speaks slightly faster, tone slightly higher, voice strained. The way she makes herself smaller and even physically tries to take up less space. She doesn’t know what to do with her hands.

It’s the way she’s completely ready to be dismissed, completely ready to say its not a big deal before someone beats her to it. The way she basically says ‘I know I had a lot going through my head at the time, and it was weighing heavy on me, but it’s not an excuse for what I did.’

The fact that she says, with somewhat of a smile, “it was a long time ago so…” before she turns to look at Amity and realizes she can’t brush this off.

It’s not that Amity is mad, it’s that she can tell this means a lot. It’s the fact that Amity probably put together the fact that her whole mission with her own dad has probably made Luz feel worse. Amity’s done nothing wrong, of course. She had no way of knowing, but it must still feel gut-wrenching regardless.

So Luz explains. And what breaks her isn’t admitting that it’s the anniversary, or that her mom isn’t with her, its that she “doesn’t have any flowers.” and the voice acting is so good. and her little voice break there is so telling.

Because she has a door to build, and a stupid dictator to keep an eye on, and by comparison her tradition feels so small… she doesn’t even have any flowers.

She ends with “I was dumb.” and in the chaos Amity doesn’t get to comfort her in the moment, but does promise to help. She listens, and announces that yes, they will get flowers. They will do something about it.

And then they do.
