BE STILL MY HEART.

It’s already bad seeing Hinata at the end of the last chapter, but more so in this chapter, especially in the beginning. He looks so awful and so confused T_T

(everyone watching looks as confused as hinata, but nekoma, or at least kuroo, looks worried. supposedly being quick on the uptake, knowing something must be wrong T^T)

It’s made worse seeing Hinata trying to get up but failing, repeatedly, and he has no idea why.

By then, everyone starts to understand Hinata is not okay.

IT’S NOT JUST OVEREXERTION, HINATA IS SICK.

HOLY HELL, 39.1 DEGREES?? HOW THE HELL HE CAN BE PLAYING???

We are all Daichi, we see the signs but we do not put it together (at least i do, i do note how hinata didn’t rest, but he did eat. i didn’t remember that hinata always does things with gusto even off the court. again, i did not put it together). Kageyama puts it together, but only because he touches Hinata, and feels how abnormally hot he is.

(but more so is the implication that this has been set up by furudate-sensei)

Hinata looks so terrifying and yet… Takeda manages to put his feet down. It takes a whole lot of strength to do so. Takeda-sensei… ಥ﹏ಥ

Urgh, sensei always knows what to say…

It’s not just a lesson in moderation or restraint, but also a lesson in mindfulness. All this time, Hinata has been successful by throwing himself fully and recklessly. However, there will be a point it will not be enough. He has reached a point where it is not. He might have boundless determination, and it has carried him so far, but eventually, his body cannot keep up, thus the fever.

Being at a disadvantage due to his lack of height, Hinata cannot afford to do that any longer. He has to utilize the chances he has to the fullest, and he can only do that by maintaining peak condition. Hinata needs to learn to see beyond the current match, just like he learns to see the court whereas before he only followed the ball.

This. This is volleyball.

(and i think it’s not a coincidence that oikawa is also shown during takeda’s speech. he is one of the lesson of having pushed himself too much. on that note, he’s still watching all this time, while running lmao)

I cannot imagine how Hinata feels. Not only he feels the immense loss and frustration for not being able to stand on the court and play anymore, but also the guilt that for troubling his precious teammates whom he has been relying on and has been relying on him.

PLEASE DON’T CRY HINATA…. DON’T APOLOGIZE…

IT MAKES ME CRY TOO. PLEASE, PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE THIS SONSHINE A HUG.

Of course it’s Tanaka who picks himself up first. Our strong and reliable senpai, always does his best to support his kohai. Then, surprisingly, next it’s Tsukki, with his own brand of cheer. Noya with his positivity, and Narita with his steadiness, which makes me hope we’ll be seeing him proving himself in this match. But then, there’s Kinoshita and Ennoshita, the first who haven’t been so successful as pinch server and the latter who… likely won’t get his turn anytime soon, thus having difficulty finding the words for Hinata (now i am making myself more sad). Suga with his bright smile. Asahi who tries his best to be encouraging… Yamaguchi says nothing, but being the one who helps Hinata up first speak louder than any spoken support (yamaguchi was also the one who fretted over hinata when he was overheated in the baths before, these two are precious T^T).

Captain Daichi always knows what to say. But no better words can be said that his partner, his rival and his best friend.

Kageyama just knows what to say doesn’t he?

It’s a callback to their very first match and very first meeting… and the very first chapter of Haikyuu, when Hinata declare a challenge against Kageyama that he will stand on the court the longest, thinking they will remain as opponents. However, they find themselves not merely as teammates but also partners, the challenge should be rendered moot. And yet… it comes a time where Kageyama is without Hinata, that Kageyama stands on the court when Hinata doesn’t…

No one wants to see Hinata go, no more than Kageyama… and it appears, Hoshiumi. It’s heartening how much respect Hinata earned, but at the same time? Doesn’t it make things worse? Now Hinata feels like he’s also disappointed his opponents along with his teammates. 

That bow… A bow of gratitude… and parting?

(kenma is going? because the match is no longer interesting without hinata? or… to check up on hinata? i hope it’s the latter. i don’t quite understand bokuto’s remark? maybe he notices the same problem that takeda noticed? or it’s from a previous exchange he had with akaashi?)

It takes the foxes, the cats, and the seagulls to take Hinata out, and that’s with a fever. A monster, indeed.

The chapter title is Endings and Beginnings. The same title with the first chapter of Haikyuu, which also happens to be the same chapter where the particular exchange between Kageyama and Hinata is previously mentioned.

Then there’s the ending… the doors are shutting out the sun. Immediately a particular song comes into mind.

The usage of the sun makes me think it’s intentional because it can have double-meaning. For Hinata, the sun stands for volleyball: the light in his life, the world he revolves around. But at the same, the sun can also stand for himself, who is no longer able to stand on the court, being shut out and away from the volleyball he loves.

At the same time, the way the chapter ends along with the chapter is titled makes it ominous. It’s as if we’ve reached the ending, a full circle is achieved (some also pointed out the number of title is 365, like the number of the days in a year, though it’s been more than a year since haikyuu started/kageyama and hinata met). Moreso that when I reread the first chapter, it is clearly seen where Hinata’s foundation comes from. His realization that he cannot do things on his own, that he cannot win alone.

Is this the end of Hinata, and by extension, Karasuno?

It might be a dramatic ending because it’s taken from Hinata’s perspective, who has lived and breathed volleyball, as such his reaction towards not being able to play will be naturally dramatic. He thinks he has lost his chance, forgetting that if Karasuno wins (and keeps winning?), he will have another chance on the court.

Regardless, the undeniable fact is that Kamomedai’s defense is broken thanks to the unpredictability that is Hinata. However, Kageyama is still on the court, and Karasuno with their creed makes them not short of attackers. Narita is unfamiliar, and Karasuno can take advantage of it. It’s going to be hard like Daichi said, but it’s not impossible. Karasuno might be going to be more fired up for Hinata, wanting to make it up for not noticing and to make sure they give him a chance to play alongside them until the very end. It can be said a test for Karasuno of how well they play without Hinata.

Still… I cannot remember the time when the team wins without their main character/protagonist. It’s up in the air now. All I know for certain that Furudate has a clear idea of how Haikyuu goes. Not only from this chapter but also from many, many chapters before, Sensei has tied every thread of story cleanly and neatly. Hinata’s fever doesn’t come out of nowhere, neither does his and many other characters’ growth and development, and most of all, it is always strongly grounded in reality, as such, we cannot easily dismiss the possibility of loss as it comes hand in hand with victory. I am willing to accept whatever the result so long we will see Hinata fight another day with his team (hoshiumi’s declaration makes me hopeful).

Furudate-sensei, I bow to you. This chapter is painful, but it is undeniably brilliant.

kagehina in Kageyama's classroom during lunch with hinata trying to get tobio to practice tosses with him, while kageyama completely ignores him to write his volley journal, which makes hinata curious so he starts being nosey and starts asking tobio what do even write in this... at first hinata does it out of annoyance but later develops genuine interest,,,

so now they're both sitting side by side in their classroom, talking in hushed voices about tobio's observations since spring tournament

starting a new series that you’re looking forward to VS the comfort of revisiting your fav series is always something i have to battle with. there’s just too many things i want to watch and read…TOO MANY AMAZING SERIES THAT I ALREADY LOVE AND ONES I NEED TO DISCOVER!

using ai to write fanfics is wild to me. do you know much it butchers character personality?? half the time the dialogues dont even feel real unless they're copy pasted from source. from what I've read, all tropes feel forced, the character says things out of compulsion rather than choice—nevermind the fact that character wont even say such a thing! and the chemistry between the characters is so... shallow.

i read a fic earlier today which was SUPPOSED to be kagehina... and cringed right that second because no. no that's ai. don't like it anymore.

like pEOPLE! start writing ur own fics and realise how much more rewarding it is create something of your own rather than have ai do it for you in the wORST quality.

what's even the point of ai in freaking fanfics anyway?

time skip kagehina playing together and hinata's habit of calling for a toss has not changed the slightest... because of which there's fumbling on his side when he yells 'toss to me!' while ACTUALLY tossing to tobio, who spikes it... and then going 'i mean, I'll toss to you! Toss to you!' i really enjoy the idea that even during super difficult games at the olympics, they're bickering on the court about Hinata screaming 'toss! toss to me- NO I'LL TOSS TO YOU!' and Kageyama going, 'make up your mind, dumbass.'

(kageyama likes hinata's tosses. he won't admit it, because even if they're really good they're still 'shit in comparison to him'.)

Metaphysically speaking

Kageyama represents Furudate’s own love for the sport, and Hinata represents the people he hopes to inspire to play the sport by creating Haikyuu.

So its really poetic how it ends with Kageyama finally finding in Hinata the rival he always dreamed of. Because it means that Furudate finally touched someone’s heart enough that they’ll start to play volleyball too

Like his art has finally touched someone.
