anyone else find it funny that reyna ramirez-arellano is canonically the ultimate Horse Girl

How do you personally feel about Reyna and Piper in terms of how they were handled/treated by the plot?

I don’t feel it’s my place to speak about Piper’s situation since I’m not NA, so I’ll link you to some other people’s posts (specifically from some cherokee readers), where it’s all explained: [link 1] [link 2] [link 3]

As for Reyna… yes, I have a few problems with the way she’s written, and I’m going to expand a little on it because I’ve never seen it addressed, at least not in detail.

First of all, there’s the whole attitude Riordan has going on of “she’s a strong independent woman who don’t need no man,” when abso-fucking-lutely every other character, minor or otherwise, got paired up by the end of Blood of Olympus. 

Riordan writes her as someone who’s always, always alone and being left behind: forced to kill her father, separated from her sister, dealing with a two people job by herself… her damn horse died in front of her. And she doesn’t want to be alone. She asks for help, for company more than once. Asking Percy to be preator with her in SoN, her willingness to align with Annabeth in MoA, her overall helpfulness towards all the characters that interact with her, and her relief when she’s finally on a mission with someone (as evidenced by BoO when she’s with Nico), they all show that YES she’s strong, and she can deal with all the weight she’s constantly carrying around, but she still needs someone! It takes a toll on her, as it would on anyone, and instead of having her work rewarded, she gets even more taken from her. 

Her backstory is compromised of “she had a father, who went mad, she accidentally vaporized him commiting one of the worst crimes in the eyes of the romans, she moved on to an island with her sister, where they made a home for themselves, but oops it got destroyed, so now they are separated. Oh, also, after she made it to New Rome, one of her closest friends went missing and came back months later with seemingly completely new alliances.”

Reyna is constantly being taken for granted and… that’s not as much evidence of the characters not caring about her as much as it is Riordan not caring about her. Jason is seen thinking about her more than once in TLH, yet when the greeks go to Camp Jupiter they don’t even get to catch up (yes, yes, tight schedule, w/e, but if RR could squeeze in a melodramatic Percabeth reunion then… she could spare a few pages to develop Reyna’s relationships).

Annabeth and Reyna seem to have hit it off really well in MoA, and iirc that’s all there is to it, not much more development on that front. Did she ever get to properly reunite with her sister? She doesn’t even get the consolation of maybe finding someone in the future (what with the whole “no demigod will capture her heart”-thing Bellona told her).

As for miscellaneous things related to her ethnicity… On that front I’d say she’s better off than Leo, a walking stereotype. However, she does have three last names: Reyna is fine, but Avila is a last name, as are Ramirez and Arellano. 

I’ve seen some people say that it’s “cliche” or “overdone” that she’s got so many names but imo it’s ok - I have the exact same number of them (two first names, two last names), it’s pretty common. However, I insist, Avila is a last name! Unless you want to tell me that she’s somewhat named after the city… I could only find one account of the name being anything but a surname or the name of a place, and it’s a shady site that claims that “Abyla was a wife of Hercules, with whom she had a child that named a city after her.”

The only thing this last part does, though, is prove that Riordan’s pretty damn lazy with his research when it comes to writing characters of color. “Reyna Abigail Ramirez-Arellano” sounds almost the same, and Abigail’s an actual name.

Finally, I don’t have the #receipt because Riordan seems to have deleted his tumblr, but I’m 99% sure he once said that he didn’t want to write Reyna as a lesbian for some bs reason like “I fear stereotypes” or s/t, when we all know he loves them (and even if he didn’t he’s rich enough to hire a sensitivity reader), and several lesbian/wlw bloggers have said that’s bullshit (search the blogs I linked at the top^ for evidence of that). He just doesn’t want to give her any kind of positive development.

TL;DR: Reyna deserves better.

Oof, so today my weekly rant is about our queen Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano. I would just like to say that it really pisses me off when people are adamantly insist that she is a lesbian lesbian. Now I don’t mind them hcing characters as lesbian, that’s fine and wonderful, but it doesn’t really fit Reyna. In canon, she’s had crushes on guys in the past, and people seem to think that liking guys makes her less strong and powerful. Now I personally hc her as bi or pan, but that’s just me. I just hate how people act as though being attracted to men makes her less of a kickass woman. Those attractions to men are a vital part of her character arc and her character, and acting as if she never had them takes away part of who she is as a character. She can still be kickass and strong and wonderful while being attracted to males, and acting like that part of her makes her weak is complete and utter bullshit. It seems to me that people hc her as lesbian just so that they can make her seem more badass, as if liking Percy and Jason was something that weakened her. You can ship her with other girls (I do) but stop making a sexuality for her that erases a part of her past and her history. This also contributes to bi erasure in fandoms when you cannot accept that a character is attracted to both males and females and you try to fit them into your stereotypical boxes. The overall message here is that Reyna can be a badass and like boys at the same time, and erasing that attraction to males is doing her, and other strong female characters, a great injustice.

but seriously, Reyna is a fantastic character with very interesting and relatable qualities. she is a very supportive friend (eg. when she accidentally found out about Nico’s crush on Percy) and a very loyal person. she also is sarcastic, strong, bold and is not afraid of following her instincts.

- travelled into the forbidden lands by herself, in like three days, when it took the seven weeks

- Was honoured by Pegasus himself

- killed Orion by herself

- has the blessing of two (2) war goddesses, Bellonna and Athena

- tapes silver coins around a dagger to fight a werewolf

- was praetor by herself, a job meant for two people

- tried to give the Greeks a chance, fought because she had no other choice

Ok but just imagine young Reyna rising up in the rank in New Rome…

-Once she gets there she is placed into the First Cohort and in her first War Game both her natural leadership and natural fighting skills are displayed.

-Everyone is a bit shocked at her skill, since they haven’t seen a demigod with those types of leadership skills in years.

-It is soon learned, however, that not everything comes naturally because the other campers soon learn that Reyna sneaks off in the middle of the night to train for hours.

-Sometimes she practices with a sword, other times a knife, but regardless of what weapon she wields, she always chants to herself “I can get better, I must be able to protect myself and others.”

-Campers soon respect her, and some even fear her. Though she is not necessarily friends with anyone, it is clear that Reyna is a good person.

-It is no surprise that when one of the Praetor dies, Reyna is elected.

-Though she is young, she is not foolish like many believe someone of her age to be. She shows that she is thoughtful, but can make split decisions when need be.

-Especially in her early days as a Praetor, she spends a lot of time reading and doing paperwork and her abscence in meals is noticed.

-The one thing that she always shows up for, no matter what, however, is War Games, the rare time where the Camp is able to see having something that resembles fun.

-That is why, even though it feels like you are in the military if you are on Reyna’s team, and might be scared to death, it’s all worth it, because it feels like you’re finally able to give back to the Praetor that gives you so much.

Just saying I might add stuff onto this later and I encourage you guys to as well!

Hades/Pluto kids headcannons

Stay up till midnight every night, sometimes accidentally.

Not morning people. At all.

Breakfast is from 8-9 (idk about CJ), and they usually show with five minutes to eat, and usually just have a banana or something. They do have a stash of mini cereal box’s and mini milk cartons in case they sleep through breakfast, in which case they sleep until Will and/or Percy wake them up (Reyna/Frank at CJ)

They are total bitches until 11 everyday, and if you piss them off… let’s just say it took Chiron three hours to convince them to shadow travel that Ares kid back from Russia.

Whenever one of them is sad, the other gets blankets, make a fort over the couch and tv, buys ice cream from the camp store, and gets a sad movie.

Disney. Movie. Marathons. Usually with Reyna, Frank, and Percy (sometimes more). Hazel knows everyword to every song of every disney movie that was ever written, so movie night basically turns into karaoke at some point.

Extremely protective. Will punch anyone who disses the other, will also punch anyone who disses friends.

Reyna and Percy are their big siblings. They all argue and fight all the time, and when one is angry, ALL of them are angry. There is absolutely NO privacy between the girls, but Nico’s still really awkward with Percy, and once Nico walked in on Percy shirtless and started hyperventilating.

Hades decides he wants to be a good dad, so he invites (forces) Hazel and Nico to go to the underworld for monthly family dinners (also holidays.)

Extremely forgetful. Neither of them can remember their anniversarys, or friends birthdays, or holidays. Etc. (Hazel can’t even remember her own birthday) however, they can remember exactly what someone said in an argument on June 17th at 4:47pm.

Whenever Nico stays at CJ, he hates the guys room in the 5th cohort, and usually sleeps on the couch in the main room. Oscassionally Hazel will join him and they’ll stay up talking or playing games.

Honestly, I really think Reyna and Nico would be super good friends like…

-They’d have each other’s backs and if anyone gives one of them a problem, the other will give that person utter hell

-They also both scare campers in different ways, and totally have a tough rep.

-I can see both of them having a morbid sense of humor like, they both just deadpan comments about death and other stuff.

-The two of them would know each other well enough that sometimes you don’t need to talk, just train and distract yourself.

-Also them being each other’s wingman, like Reyna always helps Nico with relationship stuff with Will and Nico goes and tries to spot cute boys for Reyna to hook up with.

Ok but like has anyone ever considered trans Reyna??? Just hear me out for a second:

Hylla always defended her now little sister, and that’s what made Mr. Ramirez absolutely lose his gosh dang mind.

Reyna’s name used to be Reynaldo (In my opinion)

Both Reyna and Hylla were really happy because on Circe’s island the siblings got to stay together (seeing how Reyna was now a girl, and wasn’t turned into a guinea pig)

Nico being the first person to know, (obviously) and she told him on their statue quest

Reyna stuffing her bra to try to stay inconspicuous, and Frank one day walking in on her doing so (cuz it’s Frank let’s be honest) and keeping her secret for YEARS before she finally comes out to the rest

Reyna trying to FORCE herself to speak with a higher voice (I’ve always imagined she had a lower voice anyway)

When she finally does come out to everyone, she’s a sobbing, shaking mess of a human being, and her friends feel so bad that she was scared to tell them and make her cookies or something idk (probably Percy and Hazel who did that)

Because sometimes you gotta remember where you started (and I'm trash for these feral boys. Also @caffeinated-croissant thanks for reminding me 😅... Cos I totally maybe... Possibly forgot...)

Anyway!

Jason has several bracelets, Percy unapologetically owns a fidget spinner. They can't keep their attention on them for long but their a source of comfort. Jason's are a mix of charm and bangle bracelets, that somehow get suck to anything and everything.

Percy has days where he won't talk to anyone, he taps the ground and makes little grumbling noises that Jason learns to understand. On those nights, Percy curls up in Jason's arms and doesn't move all night.

Reyna ran to Jason and hugged him in front of both camps. She was so close to crying and held him fiercely, Jason actually did cry because he was so afraid he'd lost her. Reyna also dragged Percy into the hug cos he was standing their motionless, appointing them as her little brothers and that if anyone dared harm them... Well those threats are suitable here.

(That's the day the treaty was made because both Roman and Greek alike learned never to piss of Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano.)

Annabeth is still kinda mad over Percy breaking her nose on his first day (when he woke up) and it doesn't help that he just doesn't care. "It's not my fault you stood so close" and so that's that.

The only ones who are considered friends to Jason and Percy out of the 7, are Frank (because like he's going to judge feral kids), Leo (cos he toes the line... And now I'm going to have to make Feral Leo that it's own post... See this it's a problem I have.) And Hazel because it's Hazel.

Piper is just kinda there, she's really close to Annabeth but after the days in the Wilderness school, where her fake relationship with Jason never happened because no...she definitely remembers him trying to claw her eyes out on several occasions and finds him strange... If kinda hot.

Jason struggling to be human, Percy hugging him close when life gets to much for him. They have a blanket fort and spend days inside cuddling when things get to much.

Both of them are stuck in a constant game of tug of war with anything and everything they have. Scarves, belts, shirts, anything and it all starts without warning.

Percy is more likely to delve into the darker parts of his powers, blood vending cos it fills him with adrenaline and he loves how free it is. And it makes him a great healer, which helps his mental state. He just cannot be restrained, only a few can get him to stop before he goes to far.

For Jason its the opposite because the camp instilled him with rules, he's terrified he'll go over board and has been nerfed as a result. It annoys some of them but Percy is always there to hold is hand when Jason's struggling. But when he's mad, Jason comes alive in a way no ones ever seen with enough raw power and brutality to rival his Father.

Jason just zone's out sometimes chewing some old slippers.

Percy and Jason are taught sign language by deaf/mute campers, to help them when they struggle with words and they spent their time helping these kids improve.

Percy is constantly picking fights and the only one who can stop him is Jason... But he's usually content with watching. Reyna could but she only steps in when she can be bothered to.

Jason breaks down when he meets Thalia, hides from her because he's so afraid she'll judge him because he knows she and Percy fight constantly. But she surprises him by welcoming him with open arms, and while he's odd she's patient. "I waited years to see you again, the fact your alive and well is all I need. You think I care your like this?" it got funnier when Lupa had to show up to stop some of Artemis's wolves from adopting Jason and Percy.

Percy is the first to confess, he gets frustrated because he can't make the words come out but Jason understands and they both kiss under the stars. Lupa and Sally knew it was coming but both fake surprise when they announce it.

The "madness" from this turned him into a mania and he has to be killed by Reyna.

No no listen listen Reyna had been taking care of the Legion on her own for so long and even when she got a reprieve with Percy it didn’t last, she was so tired and so worried and so so so so-

And then Frank came into the picture and he was solid and he was staying and he had the same mindset and goals as her. And she made other friends by the end of the war, but it was something else entirely to have a real partner, someone to carry half the burden, someone she could rely on.

She didn’t have to do it all herself now.

Can we have more of the overly mature characters that always act older than they are just , actually, act their age for once.

Like the strict cold 20yr old, who is more mature than all of the 30-40yr olds, actually acts their age,dancing and singing to new songs, making jokes.

Because in their hearts they are the sunshine character, but they put up icy walls to protect themselves, but the fire inside them will melt the ice.

Or the fire in their heart was put out before, and can only grow around their family, who knew them before they became cold, began hiding themselves, so their family are the only people they feel safe with and can truly be themselves with, even subconsciously - moving closer to them when they're nearby or smiling more around them, something so natural for family but not for their friends.

Because their family is safe, their family will protect them, so they don't need to hide themselves.

Imagine if at both Camps everyone thinks Reyna and Hylla hate eachother due to them bickering alot and fighting alot.

Instead, what if they're just acting like normal siblings, fighting eachother and annoying eachother, but no one else has full siblings so everyone just acts as friends.

So those two could be arguing and insulting eachother, but if anyone else tries to be rude to them they will get murdered n shit.

Also, Hylla would be the only one able to get Reyna to rest and go Medical, and is the only person Rey lets hug her.

More importantly, the Amazons could visit Camp Jupiter, and a few hours the campers panic bc Reyna and Hylla are in a room together alone, having run off at the start. And the campers find them just hanging out and laughing, which Reyna rarely does, confusing everyone.

I can imagine Reyna working herself to death, like not eating and sleeping properly.

I also believe that if many legionares are too injured to fight, she would fight alone in a different way(like the pirates or something else she picked up)

Imagine if there was a tip to both camps that a massive army if monsters were going to attack Camp Half-blood, so most Romans go to help, leaving Reyna as the only defence( ik they wouldn't but Imagine)

Instead, imagine the army of monsters stormed Camp Jupiter, and Reyna having to hold them off until the legion returns, using magic from Circe's Island and fighting like the pirates.

The legion only returning at the end of the fight in time to see Reyna, broken and bleeding but victorious, having destroyed most of the army and passing out due to injury.

Reyna would then sleep for days, weeks even. Much longer than needed to heal from the fight due to lack of sleep and food. The whole legion in panic that Reyna may not wake up when she's just catching up on missing sleep.

Her just waking up like 3 weeks later confused as everyone is celebrating, not realising how long it's been

clareyna deserves more traction it really does. i understand we all read the “no demigod will make you whole blah blah blah” bs i get it okay. but the daughter of the roman war god and the greek war god, both their parents have either passively blessed them (reyna) or actively been an asshole to them (clarisse) and they feel they have this impossible standard to live up to as the children of their parents. you’re telling me the ace lesbian and the disaster bi aren’t going to fall in love??? you’re telling me they will never sit down and share a meal together and talk about the pressure they feel in their roles as respective leaders of their camps??? (admittedly reyna does have a larger and more central role + more responsibilities but to say that clarisse isn’t a leader in her own right is to completely ignore the depth of her character but anyway-)

all this is to say that these 2 characters are far too similar to not have an innate understanding of one another. their characterization alone is like. the daughter of the war god who is fierce and strong and tough and shoulders the responsibilities of their camp but on the inside they are just kids who are so tired and want rest but they can never truly have it because they’ll constantly be living in the shadow/expectations of their parents and constantly be viewed as these Strong Women with impenetrable emotional armor. they have both known losses for their camps and fought in the same wars and have lost people they love in one way or another and it’s like. it’s delicious. it’s heartbreaking. it’s what the people (me) deserve.

anyway clareyna is fucking immaculate and if you’re not careful one day i’m gonna write a multi-chapter fic dedicated to them and only them watch yourselves

Since Circe was a sorceress and could do magic & shit, and Reyna was at Circe's Island aswell, Reynard could've technically learnt magic there.

What if Reyna had learnt magic with Circe, but it was just very hard to control and very dangerous, so she can only do it with Hylla ( who was older at the time and so had better control of the magic)

Imagine Hylla visiting Camp Jupiter and forcing Reyna to use the magic she hasn't used in years, slowly building up in power .

Imagine Reyna just being tired of Legionarres and turning them into animals by accident, or when everyone is shouting in a senate meeting - silencing everyone without realising.

Does anyone ever feel the sudden urge to cry but can't, no matter if there's tears in your eyes?

bc right now I can't sleep and feel miserable & it won't go away. It sucks

In cannon Reyna has never been anyone's first choice.

Jason was her fellow Praetor and friend, but he left her for new friends and a partner who he had fake memories with.

Percy then became Praetor and began helping Reyna only for the Argo2 to show up and him to immediately leave.

Hell, she wasn't even her sister's first choice as Hylla left her to join the amazons.

So, if she ever had a partner I feel that she would be shocked at the amount of care she would get, and she would be confused bc no one's cared for her before, and she would just adore being cared for.

I say therefore Reyna isn't cold hearted but has a bleeding heart, but is used to everyone leaving so she hides it.

Everyone always says stuff like "oh Jason was touch starved" or "Nico's touch starved" but I give u this take:

Reyna is touch starved.

She's the leader of a Roman camp, so she probably isn't overly close to anyone and she probably has no one she trusted enough to help her.

So Reyna probably refuses to let people hug her or touch her because she's scared of getting hurt, and the only person she trusts is her sister Hylla, and then it grew to include Nico because you know trauma bonding and all that

Even if she learns to trust people the only 2 persons she'll allow herself to fall asleep around are Hylla and Nico because she trusts them to protect her.

And she's definitely a clingy sleeper, so if she falls asleep around either of them, or either of them are there, she would cuddle them because she felt safe.

If she's sick she would definitely refuse to get help and just keep working herself to death until her sister came and just. Kinda. Pulled her into a hug, and Rey would just melt against her because she's her sister and shit, and all the legionaires would be shocked as Reyna doesn't like people hugging her.

I always see people talking about Reyna as if she's very put together and organised, like has a great sleep schedule and everything

I love that, but what if instead she's just a mess if a human being.

I headcannon Reyna as a workaholic who just never sleeps.ever. unless she just passes out from exhaustion. I think she gets so busy working that she misses most meals and never has time to do anything.

Also I definitely headcannon her as a lot younger, like more closer to Nico's age, so around 14 or 15 and like no one remembers

Give me a Reyna who hasn't slept or are in days who does most of the praetor work as Frank is struggling to learn how to do it.

Give me Reyna who no one realises she just doesn't sleep or is always working, who only keeps working so not to disappoint anyone because she's younger than the others.

Give me Reyna who really just needs a hug and some rest but never takes breaks.

Just imagine a scenario where after a long month of meetings and paperwork, of only getting 1hour sleep a night if that, where when getting up from her seat Reyna , absolutely exhausted, ends up passing out. All of the legion panics because Reyna is very strong and is always fine so when she wakes up after being asleep for a few days everyone is worried. Like every time she goes to get something it's grabbed for her. Or when she needs to go somewhere people go with her and fret over her to make sure she's alright. And because she's stubborn and not used to help she pushes it away.

Give me a Reyna who hides injuries plz, refused to go medical ever.

Also if her sister's there, she will hug her and she will fall asleep in her arms. Why? Because Hylla is safe to her.

I'm the annoying friend who just tells jokes but I still help them. Sometimes tho I feel like they hate me and sometimes I just need a hug. Can't be happy all the time ya know?
