Next time rotate them like a rotisserie chicken
Ooh, that's a good idea! Hear me out though: rotating them on one of those gas station hot dog warmers. I'm talking one of these bad boys:
I might do either one if I have the time!
does anyone wanna hold hands until we feel a little braver
Hello everyone! Here's a quick Merlin au idea that I might flesh out later:
We know from the show that Merlin is "magic itself", so what if all magic had a form of consciousness or spirit as Emrys? In this au, Emrys has always existed as magic's consciousness and allows magic users to harness his power, but he lacks any physical form on account of being a spirit.
However, when Uther declares war on magic and starts the purge, Emrys knew that he had to act to stop Uther. So, he decides to make a vessel so that he can directly act in the physical world, instead of having to rely on the power of his followers.
Emrys's plan was to intertwine his soul with the newborn vessel's, which would allow him to become one with the vessel and keep his memories, powers, and spirit intact. But, something went wrong while Emrys was attaching himself to the vessel, and now Emrys was stuck in a mortal form without any of his memories as a spirit. And thus, Merlin was born.
Everything after that would go pretty much the same as canon up until the last season. As the golden age neared and Morgana grew stronger, the part of Emrys's spirit that resided outside of Merlin grew more and more insistent. What was left of Emrys's spirit knew that Merlin needed to regain his memories as Emrys and reunite with their spirit to achieve his true potential, but it seemed like nothing was working!
So, Emrys tried everything to get through to Merlin, but Merlin was too preoccupied with trying to keep Arthur alive to notice any of Emrys's subliminal messages.
After a while, Emrys tried reaching out to the Druids and even the Catha to see if they could perform a ritual to unlock Emrys's memories and spirit from within Merlin. Merlin eventually figures out the truth and readily agrees to the ritual, taking any power that he can get if it means that he can protect Arthur better.
However, Arthur and the knights catch wind of this and are horrified. To them, it looks like magic itself is trying to possess Merlin!
This all culminates with Arthur and the knights being too late to stop the ritual. They watch on in horror as Merlin's eyes are permanently stained gold, and his expression holds an uncharacteristic grimness.
Arthur knows, down to his core, that what he's looking at isn't Merlin, but rather magic itself wearing his best friend's skin and controlling his like a puppet. With tears in his eyes, Arthur turns his blade on what was once Merlin, knowing that Merlin himself wouldn't have wanted magic to lay waste to the world while wearing his face.
But Emrys just rolls his eyes at Arthur dramatics. Honestly, his memories of existing as an incorporeal spirit for millennia were kind of boring anyways.
TL;DR:
Merlin gets a cool powerup, while Arthur thinks that he has to kill his best friend, who is possessed by the closest thing Camelot has to a devil: magic itself. Heartbreaking angst (from Arthur's POV) and mild irritation (from Merlin's POV) ensue!

I AM THE GOD OF TRASH!!
YESSS!! I SHALL HAVE AN ARMY OF POSSUMS TO DO MY BIDDING!!
here's a random word generator--whatever word it gives you is now the thing you are the deity of
Ohhhhh, I like this!!
Merlin ensures that Arthur stays alive long enough to become king because he may be a complete prat, but he makes Gwen happy so he has to keep him in one piece for the sake of his bestie!
I'd imagine that Merlin just straight-up kills Uther in season 3, when Uther's thrown Gwen in the dungeons when he found out about her relationship with Arthur.
Uther is trying to kill Merlin's bestie and Queen? Bam, Uther's dead, and now Arthur can fulfill his true destiny as Gwen's himbo trophy husband.
Merlin AU where Merlin is told that Guinevere is the Once and Future Queen, the Savior of Albion, etc.
And he's like "yeah that checks out. She's the greatest. But how's she gonna get on the throne since she's a commoner?"
And Kilgarrah says that she's going to have to marry Arthur and he's like "Really?! That idiot? Ugh fine"
Merlin still has to save Arthur's life occasionally and he's always muttering "do it for Gwen. Just til she's on the throne. Then I can let him die. Maybe I'll kill him myself"
Haha, yes! That's exactly where it should go!
Here's an idea: Arthur trying to kill Uther to avenge the members of House Ambrosius might not even be treason. Since Arthur was given an official sigil, he's now technically also a member of the Ambrosius family himself.
We know that noblemen can challenge the king to a duel to the death over the death of a family member if they think the king is responsible, since that's exactly what Tristan du Bois did after his sister died. Arthur could legally challenge Uther in a duel to the death, and no one could really do anything about it, not even Uther.
Maybe while he challenges Uther to a duel, he announces himself as "Arthur Ambrosius", rather than Pendragon, just to make it sting a little bit more for Uther. >:D
balinor giving merlin the ambrosius sigil and merlin carrying it around with him for years. merlin and arthur sitting around a campfire, both believing fullheartedly that they’ll be dead by morning bc like hell are they going to allow the other to sacrifice themself to close the veil. arthur giving merlin the du bois sigil as a parting gift and ensuring that merlin will be taken care of after his death. merlin biting the bullet and handing over the ambrosius family sigil in exchange. luckily, arthur doesn’t recognize the ambrosius sigil for what it is - a dragonlord lineage. BUT now he thinks merlin has noble blood and is wondering when tf he figured that out, if he ever met his father, and why he never told arthur.
In case anyone was wondering about the context, this was 100% Leon reporting to the Round Table about these very important misleading statistics while Mr. Magics Georg himself stood right behind him!
"The average citizen of Camelot has committed treason" factoid is actualy just a statistical error. The average citizen of Camelot has never committed treason against the crown. Magics Georg, who commits treason every single second by simply existing, is an outlier adn should not be counted.
You know what type of characters are my favorite? The ones that aren't just doomed by the narrative, but the narrative seems to have a personal vendetta against them.
I'm talking about characters who the narrative wants to fistfight to the death in a Denny's parking lot at 3am. Characters who get tied behind the narrative's truck and dragged through a minefield of angst and pain. Characters that the narrative will turn into a pathetic, sopping wet cat. Characters that the narrative will elbow slam into the floor from the top rope while they're down just for the fun of it.
I just love characters that don't pass the narrative's vibe check and get put through the horrors and come out the other side a different person because of it.
Waiting 20 long years (probably like an hour) for my devoted husband (ao3) to return home from the Trojan war (being down) and slay my horrid suitors (error message screens).
I had a lot of fun working with Griffon on this fic! I had a blast writing the identity shenanigans between Merlin and Emrys!
A big thank you to my beta reader, Sage_Owl on Ao3, and to the reverse bang mods for organizing this event! :D
Author: @ramblings-of-a-chaotic-neutral Arthis: @griffonskies Rating: Teen and Up Pairing: Merlin/Arthur Summary:
“Merlin, do you know this fiend? Has he threatened you into allowing him to take your appearance somehow?!” “Yes, I do know him, but he hasn’t stolen my appearance or anything of the like. It is, technically, his face too.” Arthur’s brows furrowed with confusion. What was Merlin going on about now? “This really wasn’t the introduction I would have liked, but I guess it’s too late for that now. Everyone, I’d like you all to meet my twin brother, Emrys.” ~ After a ritual gone wrong, Merlin's soul is split into two different bodies: one with magic and one without. And because destiny apparently had it out for him, the knights catch both of them in the same place. Without any better explanation, Merlin blurts out the only believable lie that he can think of: that the two identical Merlins are twin brothers.
