Amur leopard This leopard inhabits cold environments, which necessitates denser and thicker fur, making it, in my opinion, the most beautiful of all eight subspecies of leopards. It is classified as critically endangered, and its population is estimated to be just over 100 individuals. Vicuña The last species of the family and the smallest too. And like many small things it is also the most precious treasure. The wool of the vicuña is among the most expensive textiles worldwide. A meter square can reach an impressive $3000 US. being mostly exclusive for the most prestigious high couture brands in the world. 

In a move that I found very smart from the governments where the animal can be found, is that the exportation of these animals is strictly prohibited making these countries the only ones who can manage the vicuña’s wool business. Good for them!

Once widespread in millions, it was vastly hunted when the conquerors discovered America (A repeated story), until 1950 where its numbers plumped to mere 10.000. Today is heavily protected and its situation is stable. However,  Scientist state that its stable population depends of the different laws of protection. If those laws would be lifted, the animal will be at the brick of extinction in just five years.

The next family is a very grumpy cute looking giant.

Baja California Pronghorn, Peninsular Pronghorn

Pronghorn are very special animals. They are the only animals that have a mixture between antlers and horns. Horns are made of keratin mostly and have only one point. Antlers, on the other hand, are made of bone and shed every year. The horns of the pronghorn are made of both keratin and bone that are shed as antlers, every year.

During the colonization, pronghorns were even more numerous than bison. It is said that their herds get lost on the horizon, they were as vast as the sight could see. It was estimated that more than 100 million pronghorns inhabited North America. However, by 1920 their numbers dropped to 13.000. Today, all five subspecies are endangered and the number of Baja California Pronghorn is estimated at about 150.

I never put much attention to this animal. Somehow, I never found it attractive. Since I am reading about them I think they are amazing. Along with the bison, the pronghorn shaped the evolution of humans in North America, providing food and shelter.

I really enjoyed illustrating cetaceans. They are kind of easy to do, they don't take many hours (like just 2), and the results are stunning. In this case, I added the lights of the high contrast from the humidity of the skin of the animal and I think make the illustration look more realistic. On the other hand, these genera of dolphins are simply beautiful. I didn't know the existence of many of them and discovering them really surprise me.

Heaviside's Dolphin This dolphin can be found in the coastal waters of South Africa. As the other members of the genera are small size dolphins with the same colors as their relatives but with a specific pattern.

They are very energetic and can be seen closer to boats. They use echolocation (a way of hunting used primordially by bats) to hunt, which means they use sound to find their prey. Prey are mostly fishes and mollusks. They are not expert divers with dives commonly going down to 50 meters. However, some register dives were down to 147 meters. Dives length is no more than 2 minutes.

Pygmy Hog

This is the smallest species of the family and sadly one of the most endangered species as well.

This hog is the sole representative of Porcula, making its conservation even more important, as its extinction would result in the loss of a unique evolutionary branch of pigs. 

The destruction of its habitat has been its main problem, reducing its viable population in to the Manas National Park. However, even there threats as livestock grazing, poaching, fires and natural predators persist. The total wild population has been estimated in less than 150 animals.

The Irrawaddy Dolphin. One of the aspects I enjoy most about this project is the opportunity to learn as I work. Before getting involved with dolphins, I had no idea how many different species existed. Now, each time I work with them, I’m struck by the incredible diversity in their shapes and behaviors. This experience also highlights how much there is still to discover about them. The last male, named Sudan, passed away in 2018 due to age-related complications. With Sudan's death, this species is functionally extinct and now relies on various assisted reproductive techniques facilitated by humans.

Forest hog

This is a special monster. The first time I saw this hog I was impressed by how ugly is and still how magnificent. 

Three subspecies are provisionally recognized: 

Congo Forest Hog:  Ranges from southeast Nigeria to Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Giant Forest Hog Occurs as scattered populations from the Albertine Rift Highlands of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to the eastern (Gregory) Rift Valley in Ethiopia and Kenya.

West African Forest Hog Can be found in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo and Nigeria

The Giant Hog that inhabit in Ethiopia could be another subspecies to classified. However further taxonomic studies are required.
