Thoughts on selkie jason todd?

Look I’m a sucker for mythological creatures and selkies hold a soft spot in my heart (although I get anger issues reading the og myths most of the time because literally the number of people that considered it okay to steal the selkie’s seal skin and then had the audacity to be sad when the selkie found it and LEFT is frankly astounding, like, bro).

But Selkie!Jason is such a sweet concept I’m just gonna list some headcanons below 💚

Remember Jason’s red hoodie? That’s his seal skin. Living on the streets, the only truly secure place for him to keep it was on him. And the first time Alfred took it to wash it (not realizing what it is) he went downright feral thinking Bruce was trying to trap him. The hoodie was returned to Jason posthaste, but Bruce and Alfred simply assumed that Jason was so protective of it because his mom gave it to him or something.

Once Jason gets used to the manor he takes to safely stashing his seal skin in his room. Bruce and Alfred held to their promise of never going inside without their permission, so he finally relaxed after a couple tense months.

Bruce finds out about Jason’s Selkie heritage by accident when Jason sneaks out of his room at night to take a dip in the pools deep inside the cave system running below the manor. Bruce panics when Jason goes inside and doesn’t come back up for air for several minutes and dives in after him. Only to come face to face with a wide eyed baby seal.

It takes forever for Bruce, Dick, and Alfred to find Jason in the cave systems afterwards. Dick manages to coax him out by pretending to drown until there’s suddenly a little seal pup nudging him back towards the surface.

All the cuddles. Have you seen baby seals? They are ADORABLE.

Jason ends up feeling safe enough to just— leave his seal skin lying around the manor. At first it’s a test, to see what the others will do now that they know. But everyone either pointedly ignores it or picks it up to hand it back to him if they need the space. Eventually Jason even allows it maintain its natural form of actual seal skin instead of a disguised hoodie or jacket.

When Jason dies, his seal skin is still lying on the armchair in Bruce’s study where left it. Nobody dares to touch or move after Jason’s death. Bruce cannot bear to bury it with his son.

(When Jason comes back he thinks Bruce stole his skin)

Dick is kind of a big brother who knows what effect he has on his siblings's friends, and he never misses an opportunity to make himself look even cooler in their eyes. But Jason? Oh, Jason has no idea that people even consider him pretty and interesting.

It pisses his siblings even more.

Jason, on his bike, with the most insane face card: Hey, Replacement, hop on. We have work to do.

Kon, twirling his hair: Is your brother, like... free?

Bernard: Yeah, on Friday

Tim, with his eye twitching: I will kill you.

Jason, absolutely unaware of what is going on: ??? WHAT THE FUCK DID I DO

Damian: ...

Jon: And kind!

Damian: Calling Todd kind is definitely a choice.

Jon: But he read me a bedtime story the last time I was staying here 😕

The recent Shinji/Ichigo week has got me wondering, how would Swinging Pendulum go if Shinji and Ichigo had been more than friends before the time travel? Either in a romantic/sexual relationship or something less quantifiable (queer-platonic?). (How would things go if Shinji got punted back too, I wonder?)

One of the ideas for ShinIchi Week that I came up with originally was actually a time travel fic for Shinji and Ichigo back to TBTP Era that might’ve eventually become UraShinIchi but I lost interest pretty early on. I can give you the few lines of dialogue I wrote for it though? It’s really not much but I did save it just in case I want to write an actual fic for it one day.

Working Summary: No one understands what is going on when Fifth Division captain Hirako Shinji disappears for a week, only to come back with an orange-haired Shiba in tow, demote his current lieutenant, and then promptly co-opt said Shiba into the position instead.

“You realize I haven’t even been through the Academy, right? So I’m pretty sure this is like ten kinds of illegal.”

“Eh, I’m old enough ta ask for favours from the fogies up top, and low-maintenance enough that I haven’t asked for much over the years. Don’t worry; they might kick up a fuss, but they’ll fold in the end.”

“WHERE DID YOU FIND HIM?!”

“FOR THE LAST TIME, KAIEN, IN RUKONGAI, NOW WOULD YA STOP YELLIN’?!”

“I want to talk to him.”

“Yeah, well, he doesn’t wanna talk ta you. And I don’t blame him. Who wants ta talk ta the creep stalkin’ him twenty-four/seven?”

“He’s obviously family!”

“…You and I have very different definitions of family, Kaien. Seriously, get outta my office. Don’t ya have work ta do?”

“Of all the things I thought we would have trouble dealin’ with, I didn’t think it would be your face, handsome.”

“Fuck you too, Shinji. At least I don’t trip over my own hair.”

“IT’S BEEN A HUNDRED YEARS SINCE I HAD THIS HAIRSTYLE, I’D LIKE TA SEE YOU DO BETTER.”

“You don’t let other people touch your hair. You’re downright anal about it.”

“Ichigo’s different. Obviously.”

“…You realize he’s sleeping with at least one other captain too, right? I wasn’t going to bring it up, but if you’re this serious about it, and as a friend, I feel like I should warn-”

“You’re an idiot.”

“Huh?”

“I said you’re an idiot. Also oblivious. An oblivious idiot.”

“Hey! I’m trying to save you some heartbreak here, asshole!”

What if: Both Ichigo and Urahara were booted back in time in the Swinging Pendulum universe?

Notes: Idk if I’ll continue this later (once those later SP canon parts are written). But I was in an UraIchi mood, and I’ve been trying to write some more of SP so here’s hoping this helps me get past that writer’s block.
