Delia Derbyshire (May 5, 1937-July 3, 2001)

Delia Derbyshire was an English musician, composer, and pioneer in the early days of electronic music. Her developments in and use of musique concrète and other innovative methods of early synthesis led to soundscapes like none heard before, including the iconic Doctor Who theme.

I've decided what to do with this Tumblr o'mine.

I already have a standard blog and a whole mess of other stuff.  The one type of blog I'd been thinking of starting but hadn't yet was a dedicated art blog.  So, that's what I shall do here.  I've been producing various things in various media all my life, and I now have this shiny new venue for it.  Woo and yay!

I begin this project with a simple digital self-portrait, inspired by the one Adrian Lamo uses as a logo in press releases he writes about himself in the third-person.  It was the first image ever created on my current graphics tablet, completed in about 30 minutes while looking at Lamo's pic and a small mirror for reference.

I made this remix at least 100 years ago, it never fails to make me happy that other folks keep circulating it, making it into videos like this, etc.  It's the reason I ended up choosing the domain SpaceMutiny.com for my music.

Stromberg-Carlson upright phone 1894

When Alexander Graham Bell’s patent on the telephone expired in 1894, American Bell Telephone Company employees Alfred Stromberg and Androv Carlson went into the telephone-manufacturing business for themselves.

The telephone shown here is Stromberg-Carlson’s first upright desk phone, nicknamed "the Coffee Grinder" by enthusiasts due to its unusual shape and side-mounted hand crank.  Few of these unique members of the "candlestick phone" family survive today.

Nikola Tesla (July 10, 1856-January 7, 1943)

Tesla, a Serbian-American inventor never fully appreciated in his own lifetime, has in retrospect become known as one of the most important inventors on record. Much of our 21st -century technological environment has its roots in Tesla's work with electricity, radio, and more.

Missed doing yesterday’s daily doodle post because the migraine I’ve spent today with was coming on.  So, today’s daily post is inspired by the migraine which is still, as of this writing, in progress.

I look forward to seeing what it looks like once I can turn my monitor brightness back up to full again.

Bell “Gallows-Frame” telephone 1875

Alexander Graham Bell's original telephone prototype used a single magneto-based device as both transmitter and receiver.  The user spoke into the single orifice, and put the device to their ear to hear the response.

The device, which gets its nickname from its elegant mahogany frame, was the first with which Bell demonstrated transmission of voice-like sounds.  Intelligible speech would be transmitted by Bell with a redesigned unit the following year.
