it is appalling to me how impossible it is to talk to my parents about the palestinian-israeli war. my dad is catholic irishman, and my mom is ashkenazi jewish from poland. i am an only child. we are agnostic. both sides of my family have experienced genocide.

one of my relatives in ireland once had a hatchet thrown at him for being catholic, my grandad was once fired after less than three hours on a job because they found out he is catholic. my great-grandma on my mom's side is the only known survivor of the holocaust in my family.

yet, as soon as the palestinian-israeli war started, such historical context was tossed aside in order to put "democracy" up on a pillar.

i am angry, i am sad, and i just wish that there were people out there that i could talk with who would understand me and my views.

Why are reblogs more important than likes on tumblr

Tumblr has always had a problem with the like to reblog ratio but ever since other media's users came over to this site, it's only gotten worse and now that tik tok's about to be banned in the US, this might only become more visible with those users potentially looking for a new fandom space, or a website in general.

examples: (three old posts, three new posts)

Firstly, what are reblogs? A reblog is when someone uses the Reblog button to put a post on their blog. It adds to the notes and is still linked to the op (original poster). How do reblogs differ from reposts?

What do reblogs do? Reblogs are one of the main ways of how this site shows its posts. Tumblr has no agorhitm which means that everything you see is user curated. -they go on the dash (dashboard) of those who follow you -they let you organise the posts on your blog(s) via tags -they can be viewed in your blog's archive as well as the archives of everyone who reblogs the post (if they have their archives on) -they let you add to the post you're reblogging -they remain unaffected regardless of whether the op edits or deletes their original post What are likes and what they do/don't do? Likes on tumblr work very similarly to likes on other social media except they don't add to the algorhitm (because there is none). It's a way to let the op/reblogger know that you like their post/tags, or sometimes, you'll see people liking their own posts that have additions because they want to show that they viewed said addition and liked it or they simply like the tags. And yes, we do like our own posts even if there are no additions, at least I do, they're nice. This is fine and you shouldn't shame people for it.

-the like section doesn't have an archive so unless you move your likes to a side blog (like I have) and make them into reblogs, you will have to scroll...a lot...if you want to browse them -the post you liked changes as soon as the op, or the blog you liked the post on if you didn't like the op's version directly, edits or deletes the post -likes can sometimes appear on your dash (though rarely) when a person you follow likes something (you will see this recommended as liked by -url-) or you might get a based on your likes post (again, not very common)

Likes do not help to boost/make the post more visible. They're simply just a way to communicate. The site stays alive with reblogs and original posts.
