THE YULE BALL

[one shot - marauders era! Remus lupin x fem oc]

[December 25th, 1975]

the pair had made a deal when he asked her to be his date to the ball, they had to match colors.

so for her dress color, she chose black, as per their friends' recommendations, knowing the color would suit them both well.

Remus hadn’t yet seen the dress she bought but Lily and Sirius had since they went dress shopping with her and gushed about how pretty she had looked when they arrived back in the common room.

Remus wasn’t always the impatient type until now, that is. He’d wanted to see this dress so badly, even going as far as to sneak into her room to look through the trunk that held her clothes to find it.

Rogue knew he’d do that, so she moved it to Sirius’s trunk where she knew Remus wouldn't think to look.

As time grew closer to 8 pm, Remus started to sweat nervously, worrying about every little thing,

If he would step on her toes during the dance,

Or if he smelt horrid, despite just having a shower.

[headcanon: Remus is a nervous sweater & is always afraid he smells bad]

James, Sirius, and Peter all rushed Remus to the ballroom to see their dates in their beautiful ball gowns, pushing past the clusters of people in the corridors, eagerly chatting about the dance like a couple of schoolgirls.

Remus’s heart was racing as they opened the large double doors, a large group of students were already there, enjoying the school-provided snacks and punch.

James separated from the group to find his dear Lily, leaving Sirius, Remus, and Peter all standing there near the punch table, trying to find their dates.

Peter spotted his date from across the room, nudging the two men on either side of him with a smirk, Remus sighed to himself, hoping Rogue wouldn’t stand him up. Sirius noticed Remus’s worry-ridden face and put his arm over his shoulders, “she’ll be here, trust me.” Remus nodded, hoping Sirius was correct.

8:05 pm rolled around, and still no sign of Rogue or Sirius’s date.

the boys were standing in the corner slowly sipping the sugary juice from their plastic cups when Sirius grabbed Remus’s face, squeezing his cheeks together as he forced him to look up.

walking down the icy stairs was his date.

Remus immediately tossed his full cup into the trash as Sirius released his face, they were unable to take their eyes off of her.

“I told you she’d look amazing in the dress,” Sirius told Remus with a wink as he nudged his side.

Remus seemed at a loss for words as he approached the stairs, waiting for Rogue to arrive at the bottom to escort her to the floor.

she looked at Remus with a bashful blush on her face as she met him at the last step, the loud conversations of the other students behind them started to drown out as he started to think of ways to compliment her.

“Y-You look…” Remus stuttered to find the right words, Rogue looked up at him as they stopped in the middle of the floor.

“Good, I hope” she mumbled, using her free hand that wasn't holding Remus’s to scratch the back of her neck.

“N-No!” Remus rushed, Rogue looked up at him wide-eyed, and he realized what he said

“Wait, Wa-Wait! Yes, you look good - no- you look great, remarkable, even!” he stuttered nervously.

Rogue covered her mouth to conceal her giggle,

“Remy, it's okay”

Remus sighed, “I'm sorry, I-I’m just incredibly nervous. But you look breathtaking” he complimented as he looked at the bodice of her dress, it was decorated in what seemed to be hand-sewn black beads and dark-colored jewels on top of the delicate tulle layer that matched the skirt.

A low melody started to play from the enchanted instruments in the front,

“Ask her to dance, moony!” Sirius whispered in his ear as he whisked away his beautiful date to the floor.

“May I have this dance, Miss Grimm?”

For Fast-Paced Parts:

Short words with single syllables. Immediately > at once/ endeavour > try/ indicate > point at/ investigate > check out.

Short sentences, the shorter the better.

Partial sentences to blaze through multiple senses and actions within a few lines.

Short paragraphs

Lots of verbs.

Few adjectives and adverbs.

Cut down on -ing form of verbs, as it can make words longer

Use simple past tense

Avoid conjunctions and link words.

Avoid internal thought - your characters are irrational, ruthless and in the flow of pure action.

For Slow-Paced Parts:

Use medium/long sentences

the paragraphs are longer: three lines minimum

Include longer words with more syllables

Use adjectives and maybe a couple of adverbs.

Insert the thoughts of the PoV character.
