Omg I can definitely see that.
As I’m writing HP fics centering the Golden Trio, I’ve been writing out all their character traits n stuff for similarities and differences, and something big I noticed was how all of them don’t have great relationships with their parents.
Like Harry’s is obvious, physical and emotional abuse, and Ron’s is talked about, but Hermione having emotionally neglectful parents both makes a lot of sense and also fills in some gaps.
It seems like Ron and Hermione have similar issues with their parents not paying them much attention outside of their academic achievements, and how that has shaped them. Especially in the differences between Ron, who is mid/poor academically vs Hermione who is straight A’s. Same root problem, similar lingering issues, different personalities.
Final note: love this idea! It makes a lot of sense in canon and also in common head-canon land.

Hermione has such an interesting underdeveloped relationship with her parents. They’re rarely if ever mentioned, and when they are mentioned, they never seem to know the full story of what exactly is going on at Hogwarts.
At least, based on the fact that they let her keep going to Hogwarts, you wouldn’t expect them to know.
On top of that, nearly every summer, she stays a large portion of her time at the weasleys. she also stays at Hogwarts during breaks, despite having the option to leave.
I find it fascinating that Hermione was even capable of obliviating her parents memories in the first place. This must have caused massive amounts of grief and agony to have surfaced. Yet she still did it.
Now I know she isn’t perfect, keeping skeeter in a jar and scarring that girls face in 5th year, but still, she was more okay with her parents completely forgetting her existence then attempting to find a different solution?
The only way to make that sort of decision easier, is your parents already not knowing you.
Which leads into my idea, I wish fanfics delved a little deeper into the idea that Hermione might have been neglected, at least emotionally so.
It may just be me, but most of these signs seem to point to some form of neglect.
See the thing about neglect is that it’s a slow acting poison in a lot of ways. Unnoticeable to those around you, and easy to ignore when it comes to yourself.
I think it would be so easy for fanfic writers to draw a connection between Hermione’s drive for academic success and plausible neglect from her parents leading to a need to impress people to keep them around.
Her number one fear in third year was failure.
I can imagine a world where she grew up quiet, struggling to make friends from her slightly bossy nature and higher intelligence. She noticed that she was special in a way (magically so), but she didn’t pay too much mind to it as neither did her parents.
But as dentists, as people who have gone through higher levels of academia, they would have paid attention to her success in school.
It wasn’t a lot of course. They’re both dentists, they both have full time jobs and no other kids, so she was just alone most of the time with her books as she didn’t have friends either.
It was lonely, but it was survivable, there was food on the table, a roof over her head, a warm bed to go to sleep in, and those brief moments where her parents would surpass her expectations and actually do something that showed that they cared and noticed her beyond her academic achievements for once.
Then she gets to Hogwarts, and the weekly letters turn into monthly ones. She tries to tell herself that all of them have just gotten busier with work and school. She doesn’t quite succeed in being convincing, but she goes back during winter break anyway.
She only ever goes back again in 6th year.
It would be so easy for her not to mention her parents, as they have a good steady job (with stable income, unlike the weasleys) and they don’t exactly outwardly harm her (like the dursleys).
It would be so easy to see her parents lack of attention or care as simple freedom, or her wanting too much, or not trying hard enough.
Because after all, she’s not helping by not sending letters either, or telling them the full story of what happened that school year when she does meet up with them.

🐐Death Before Inaction is literally one of the best Peter Parker fics I've ever read, if you want skewed dynamics, no slash, an OP Peter, and really good story telling this is for you.
The Anomaly is an amazing Into the Spiderverse fic that really goes into Miles character and how giving up; doing everything in your power to prevent something and then it happens anyways, can destroy you and change your perspective. And on the other side how choices can make you regret them.
Bound by a Promise to the Moon is an Avengers work that is focused on characters and relationships between people who have drifted apart. It is IronStrange but nothing in your face for the most part 💀 you can skip those parts if you don't like it😁. It really is worth the read though.
Crossovers
Gaming Spider is a MCU fic that is Peter-centric but be warned because they dropped 8 chapters on the same day in 2022 and haven't updated since. It's so entertaining because Peter just has the Gamer Power (basically Litrpg elements) and grows increasingly stronger after every encounter, and the plot makes sense and isn't only based on the system.
All of the heroes and all of the men, couldn’t save Tommy from getting kidnapped again is such a bias rec on my part, I like crossovers that are done correctly and I was a mcyt and dsmp follower (not really watcher, I can't commit to anything) and this is a story changed by the characters, where the original plot is nothing but a memory to help character development. God I love character development.
BNHA
🐐Parallax is a BNHA fic that is SI and I KNOW BUT HERE ME OUT is basically like if Todoroki was haunted by a physics loving astronomer that made him feel more like someone else, but still kept a lot of what makes him, him. It's so good, like touched me so deeply that I have a hard time explaining it.
A Study In Deceit is a BNHA fic (I know) that is SO FUNNY, basically Bakugou is BBC's Sherlock, but has hid it for all his life, he does cases on the side and turns them in anonymously to the police. It's really good if you're looking for Todoroki and Bakugou friendship.
Foresight now this, this is crack. Want a BNHA fic that speeds through the story in ways that are so funny? Want someone doing something without a clue why? READ THIS. If you know the plot of BNHA it's sometimes easy to guess why he's doing what he's doing but the reactions of other characters is sooo good.
RONIN, ronin, ronin, ronin. This thing is the best ever, BNHA, op Midoriya but now you might be scrolling past, but... It's SO GOOD, BOHB_STEVENS IS A GENIUS this fic was made to practice fighting and ohhhhh did they get plently of practice. If you like fighting scenes that are descriptive, easy to understand, and EXHILARATING read this.
Magneto is an amazingly different BNHA SI fic, where really the story stays the same but I'm a simple person and slice of life interactions can be just as fun as fighting and complicated story telling (the storytelling is good btw) . I think I you want a little angst mixed with mostly good times and crack you should read this.
Pinwheel Eyes is a BNHA if Midoriya had a quirk. But once again the story is original they aren't afraid to make unpopular decisions to keep realism, and he has to win to keep people alive, not just have plot armor. I think if you want amazing fights and to be surprised over and over with how good this is you should read it
Crossovers
🐐A Massacre of One is a BNHA/Worm crossover that is something out of a dream for me. Super long, well written, fight scenes, character development, and well done implementation of other stories elements. With quirks it makes it easy, but still the reactions of others when they figured out what happened is AHHH and the way they make them go through the story is amazing too. Big props to the writer.
Si Vis Pacem is a BNHA/John Wick fic where John Wick (would it be SI?) is reincarnated into Midoriya, and it's pretty good, ngl it updates like 3 times a year so it's been a minute since I've read it, but I remember really liking it.
Be Careful What You Ask Your God is a BNHA and Chainsaw Man crossover where once again (I know I said it wasn't the norm) the characters are the story, here they took a different approach and didn't even focus on the main characters of BNHA and just how the mc's of chainsaw man would live in that world, but the LORE (matpat😭) is interesting.

Harry Potter
Porcupine Quills & Potion Spills A Harry Potter (Snape-centric) work. This fic is pretty good, but it's not TOP top tier. The reason it's here is because I've been looking for another fic that has this same idea but none have done it this certain way and I really like the idea. Now it is on Hiatus but its only been a few months, so they'll probably be back (man I hope so).
Crossovers
A Wand for Skitter is a Harry Potter and Worm crossover (if you haven't read worm and appreciate modern sci-fi/eldritch original works you should read it) but the characters are amazing, nothing seems cheap and the ending, THE ENDING it was so good.
Stranger Things
I really didn't mean to hurt anyone is a Stranger Things story that had Steve as Seven. The choices with the way the story is going makes sense and again the characters are so well written. His powers are original and make the story even better and even gets him into some unsavory situations.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil
The Chronicles of Tanya the Fuehrer is another Tanya fic where it's after the war ends, the beginning is amazing, she does get a bit ooc in some parts but other than that the story itself is so entertaining and how they describe things and paint a picture is so beautiful.
Crossovers

Blue Lock
A Child's Dream is a Blue Lock fic that is the only reasonabley lengthed fic that isn't slash that I have found. Theres a lot of simping for Isagi but that's normal enough. The development is interesting and keeps you engaged and the interactions are funny and so out of left pocket most of the time.
Déjà Vu is a Blue Lock fic that is probably abandoned, but the idea and execution make up for it, it's also short so don't worry about slogging through 100,000 words then figuring out it's abandoned. It's kind of crack-like but more serious than you would expect.
Miraculous Ladybug

Especially when it’s almost never the main pairing. To be fair one of the characters has been butchered limb by limb by the fandom because he’s annoying (in the movies), but the other is well liked, this is so funny to me.

Everything I want from a Danny Phantom x Harry Potter Crossover
Based on amazing crossovers such as the Half-Dead Phoenix, Spirited Away, Weirdward, The Phantom and the Potter, Wand of a Halfa, and Evanesco!

Danny does not get an owl or a toad. He gets a cat. A black ghost cat with bright green eyes. He did not mean to get said cat, it just happened. Inky (Marsalias/Lula’s ghost cat OC) is alarmingly persuasive. Danny had nothing to do with this.
No, really. Inky got wind of it, followed Danny to Diagon Alley, and waited for him inside. She then presented a very strong argument as to why she should go with him to Hogwarts. Not only would she be a ghostly ally that can blend in wherever she goes, she can take messages back and forth far quicker than an owl.
“Don’t you live with the Westons?” “I am perfectly capable of taking care of all my kittens, thank you very much.”
To McGonagall and Jack, this looks like Danny getting annoyed and talking to a random cat who seems to be meowing rather pointedly
(yes Jack Fenton takes Danny to Diagon Alley. I’ve been reading too much fanfiction to want to deal with Maddie right now but I still want Danny and Jazz to have at least one semi-decent parental figure)
The wands hate him. Ollivander had to get out the strange heirloom from a man called Charles Worth. Danny has a good secret chuckle over that (Wand of a Halfa)
When the Weasley twins say he has to fight a dragon for the Sorting Ceremony (The Phantom and the Potter), he takes it seriously.
“Again?! Whatever. Fine. How big is it and are outside weapons allowed?”
When he finds out that it’s actually a mind-reading hat, he asks if he can fight the dragon instead.
He gets sorted into Slytherin because he locks the Hat out of his mind and then asks which House will make people trust him without question like that one HP meme
He just wants to not be blamed for everything going wrong all the time but the Hat doesn’t know that
Now the teachers are confused because after the dragon comment they thought for SURE he’d be a Gryffindor. Aren’t Slytherins supposed to have self-preservation instincts?
Gosh Danny would be so fantastic in all the Houses but his colors being green and black and silver and already having to deal with being pre-labeled as evil and devious just the narrative parallels are so fantastic

When he finds out Astronomy is a required class he almost combusts
He’s also super fascinated with wizard watches and goes on and on about how sensible they are. No one has the heart to tell him that 99.99% of the population does not have the time or the willpower to memorize entire star maps and planetary movements just to tell the time.
Peeves listens to him. Not just because he’s scary, but he helps with some of the (more harmless) pranks.
Danny gets into a prank war with the Weasley twins. Halfway through, he convinces Lee to switch sides, leading to Lee being called the Sympathizer (affectionate/derogatory) for the rest of the year
Danny adopts some of the more feral children and teaches them all he knows of combat. He simultaneously knows too much and too little
Like, he has no idea how wizard duels work, or what kind of offensive/defensive spells there are, and his hand-to-hand has decent form but is lacking in discipline
However, he does have in-depth advice on how to analyze a fight and determine the threat level, improvise weapons/use the environment, and troll an opponent into insanity
He also lists common pressure points and weaknesses (joints, thinner skin spots, nerve clusters, etc) and how to injure/not injure someone. He does not mention that most of this knowledge comes not from injuring others, but being injured himself
Feral children include Neville, Ginny, Luna, the Creevies, a few Puffs and pretty much all the Slytherin firsties who haven’t been corrupted by the propaganda yet (kinda-sorta The Potter and the Phantom, I’m a little salty about the most recent chapter)
I would add the HP trio but they’re too suspicious of Danny because all their interactions have been unfortunately creepy and he makes Harry’s scar prickle like crazy
Also I don’t want to deal with main plot drama I am here for Mandalorian-esque background shenanigans and not-my-division
Danny’s parents send a care package of fudge. It comes alive and tries to attack everyone. Suddenly everyone understands why the Monster Book of Monsters didn’t faze him
Seriously he growled the book into submission what the heck Fenton (aka my current favorite part of The Phantom and the Potter)
Danny and Hagrid get along like a house on fire. Everyone looks on in awe and horror.
Danny asks if the owls have some kind of tracking magic and if they’re used as wizarding bloodhounds. Nobody can answer this
Actually, Danny asks a lot of questions and makes a lot of comments that leave everyone in the vicinity vaguely disturbed
Danny has a list of people that he’ll regularly prank out of vengeance for his feral children. His friends affectionately call it ‘Danny’s Hit List.’ Current victims include Zacharias Smith, Draco Malfoy, and Cormac McClaggan. He also occasionally targets Ronald Weasley for intimidating his Slytherin firsties.
Danny feels a bit sorry for Harry because he knows intimately what he’s going through, and encourages his feral children to give him space. The HP trio sees this as an avoidance tactic and their suspicion rises.
Danny does not like Mad-Eye’s vibes. He sets off his alarm bells in a similar way to Severus Snape and Igor Karkaroff (I don’t know which fic has Danny sensing Dark Marks but it’s somewhere). He especially doesn’t like that Mad-Eye can somehow see him while invisible.
Barty Crouch Jr. has no idea what Danny is. He looks human, but there’s something else there that he can’t pin down. Is it the glow? The buzzing edges of his figure? The fangs? Well, he doesn’t seem like he’s interested in interfering, so Barty will leave him alone for now.
Danny is not exactly here of his own free will. MACUSA has no desire to get in the middle of whatever is going on in Amity Park, and is definitely not eager to deal with the Fentons (Spirited Away). It was either Hogwarts or be forcibly removed from his family and have their memories wiped. Nobody is happy about this (except for Dumbledore).
This means that he’s practicing opening portals. His future self could do it, so he knows he can learn it. It’s slow going, but Inky helps. Once he knows he can go back and forth quickly, he’ll sleep a lot more easily.
He tries to keep up with his muggle schoolwork for if when he goes back to Casper since he’s not hampered by sudden ghost attacks (this is where the family genius shines through; he gets pretty good grades on all of his schoolwork, even if some of it is a bit late or unfinished due to the sheer workload. Of course, Danny does not see this at all).
He is both envious and distraught that wizards don’t learn science or math or language. He then decides to force his feral children to at least learn basic math (“Your monetary system is as least as bad as the Imperial measurement system, you need this”) and biology (“Okay, this is just the broad strokes of how your body works. This is how you can break your body. Please don’t. This is how you can fix your body if there’s no mediwitch available. Please do.”). They are both intrigued and annoyed.
I’m tempted to have him suddenly realize he’s never flown while intangible while talking about brooms to Ginny. Super-fast wanderer Danny is a concept that lives in my head rent-free.
On the one hand, I don’t want to flood this crossover with too many AU concepts, but on the other hand super-fast wanderer Danny
He’d still prefer portals for quicker travel, but having a backup could be a good idea. I’ll have to think about it.
Ending? What ending? The shenanigans will last forever and a certain wizarding war can’t stop them
In all seriousness I don’t think having Danny interfere too much with the HP trio is a good idea, I get a little tired of alternate canon events or having major plot points magically averted just because of an OP other-dimensional character.

Oh Draco you were such a controversial character but I ended up loving you
I’ve just finished this amazing fic and I have a void right now cause this was one of the best thing I’ve ever read in my life and now I don’t know what to do about it
I just felt the need to draw something about this story and of course it have to be him

I finished it and now I have a void inside of me that will always accompany my fragile reader soul
Oh god it was SO good and it made me felt SO many emotions (sometimes at the same time so I had to take some breaks in order to keep reading while still enjoying it)
I can’t believe what I’m about to say but this turn on the story was better than the actual ending of the canon one. Because it felt so much more realistic and the emotions were in point
I ended up loving and understanding Draco Malfoy, another thing that I never had thought about before I would be able to do, in a different way than the canon Draco cause, obviously, this one has more background, more realistic outcomes, the way he felt, the way he loved.

Im so happy to had read it cause I must say, I never enjoyed reading angst before or something so, you know, HEAVY but it was raw, humanly raw that it make it addictive to keep on reading
I formed so many theories along the way about what was going on or how it was going to be that at the end I was glad some of them became true while others didn’t. God I was so relieved that the ending wasn’t what I was expecting. They deserved to have a somewhat happy ending. I was so ready to cry my heart out but they lived, they finally were able to have a life together so that was enough to my sensitive heart ❤️🩹
