cw: long ass written part, also reader kinda has an anxiety attack in the beginning
the band had been in in the living room for the better half of the day, plotting potential new projects and writing new material. and you had decidedly avoided all of them. you knew that questions would be asked, with how jumpy you were feeling, so you just claimed to have a lot to work on for class – which to be fair, was only half a lie. you had genuinely painted all day, though less so for studious purposes and more so for keeping your own sanity intact. then of course, your mother had texted. leaving you with no choice, but to return to the house of the person that had raised you. if that was the right term for what your mother had done. and you were also returning to the very same house, where you had gotten a glass thrown at your head, the last time you had been in it. so, it felt fair to say, that you weren't excited about the prospects of returning.
by now you were pacing back and forth in your room, trying to figure out a plausible excuse to not show up on saturday. with trembling hands you had gripped your phone, every message had been typed with even shakier fingers, than the one before. the longer you stared at your mother's texts, the clearer it became, that she was not intending on letting you off the hook. no, you knew her well enough, to know, that she would not give any excuse the time of day. even if you were to actually fall sick, which given the size of the pit in your stomach, wasn't even that improbable, she was expecting you in her home at 6:30 exactly.
your feet kept moving in circles, like you could out-walk the thoughts that kept popping up in your head. you knew kai was angry at you. even though you had sent back the money and were planning on apologizing to him in person, he'd been pissed off the night that had landed you in the er, too. there was no telling how saturday would go. especially since you and kai both knew, whose side your mother was on. the more you thought about it, the more your mind spiraled. you could feel the air catch in your throat, to the point you almost choked on it. if only you could just continue to paint, push away everything else and for a moment – no matter how futile it was – forget.
your knees felt rigid, as you tried to bend them to sit back down. your movements were stiff, almost as if you'd done them for the very first time. you huffed out a breath before trying to focus back on the gray landscape you had been painting. you grip on the brush tightened; the white of your knuckles matched the vacant spaces on the canvas pretty much exactly. the bristles connected where you had left off, but you couldn't get them to connect to the surface. they barely scraped the texture surface of the canvas. your hands were still trembling too much. the colors blurred together, unfocused, as your vision tunneled in on the thoughts clawing at the back of your mind. you needed to breathe. to think.
whenever it had come to fight or flight, you had always chosen the ladder. as would you now. the room started spinning. it all felt so small. so tight.
you pushed back your chair. feet kicking against the easel in frustration. the need to escape overcame any and all sense of space. which was exactly, why your foot connected with one of the easel's legs and snapped it shut within a second. in a futile attempt to catch both the canvas and the easel, you jumped from your chair. it fell back behind you, briefly knocking you off balance. your hands barely grazed the wood of the structure before the easel, along with the still very wet canvas crashed right into you. the momentum sent you stumbling, knocking the air from your lungs as the wooden structure pinned you in place. the canvas ripped, of course, though not without thoroughly sullying your bare left arm and pant leg with varying shades of gray acrylic paint. and as if that wasn't enough already, her phone lit up with a new notification.
dabi.
at this point, part of you had just embraced laying on the ground covered in paint, bring crushed by your own art supplies. trying not to break it, you shoved the wooden stand off of your body. it wasn't that heavy, but it turned out to be pretty difficult to move something with shaking hands. after a good minute of scooting and shoving the different wooden logs off your body, you finally managed to untangle yourself from them. you unlocked your phone, quickly replying to dabi before examining the sad remains of the tattered canvas, that you had spent the better half of today working on. the fabric had torn right at the center and the paint had smeared leaving whatever the original image had been to be anyone's guess. with a heavy sigh and an even heavier thud, you let gravity pull you back to the ground. your eyes latched onto the ceiling, as if staring at the blinding light would make the mess, that you had created, disappear.
"just dropped something, huh?"
you jumped at the voice. in one swift motion you pulled yourself up, now more or less sitting in the mess of wooden logs, paint and tiny scraps of canvas, that had ripped off. your head turned involuntarily, meeting the eyes of the person you had wanted to see in here the least. you knew, that your position was so easily mockable, but at the very least, if it had been tomura, you wouldn't need to go to the trouble of explaining what had led to it. alas, of course, you had to be staring back at him of all people, as he lazily leaned against your doorframe with a cheeky grin painted on his lips. his bare arms were crossed in front of his chest giving you a full view of the black ink that snaked along almost the entirety of both his arms.
"it's all part of my creative process."
you laughed awkwardly before attempting to wedge the wooden logs of the easel back into place. dabi hummed in response. you didn't look back at him, assuming that he would just leave you to wallow in your own misery. but he didn't. something moved just outside your peripheral and before you knew it, dabi was squatting across from you. he swiped the easel from your hands and easily lodged all the pieces into place. wordlessly he stood back up and placed the structure back where it had stood before your nervous breakdown. you didn't say a word either, when he continued to help you pick up the pieces of your painting and loose brushes, that you had knocked across the room.
once your room had returned to its usual amount of chaos, dabi spoke up again.
"any particular reason for this specific 'creative process' of yours?"
he let himself fall into your desk chair; his eyes never quite tearing away from you. it must be pretty amusing to him, to see you covered in paint and cowering on the floor. but his expression seemed less amused, though if you were asked to describe it, you would probably not be able to find the right words. the way he had asked, sounded so casual. the teasing tone in his voice came so naturally to him, that it was easy to overhear, the genuine curiosity, that his words were laced with. for a second, you even entertained the idea of telling him, but quickly decided against it. after all, what good would it do? so you just shrugged.
"what are you still doing here, anyway?"
himiko and spinner had left a bit ago and tomura had gone to his room to stream a new game, that a friend of his had recommended, so you had just assumed that dabi would have left, too. obviously you had assumed wrong.
"was about to leave, when i heard you."
his fingers absentmindedly tapped against your chair's armrest. you nodded, picking at the slowly drying spots of paint on your pair of sweats. you could feel his stare burn holes in the back of your head and the more you tried to ignore it, the more aware your body seemed of it. as if turning away from him, could hide you from his eyes chipping away at the front you tried so hard to keep up.
he stopped looking at you for a moment. using that time to look around the room. he had been in this very room countless times before. slept on that very bed, though the blanket and pillows on it were different than he remembered – yours, he assumed. the pattern of the duvet cover was hard to make out under the countless sketches that were scattered on top of it. you had hung up a few on the wall as well and even some paintings, that he assumed to be yours, as well.
something about the way, that he so shamelessly occupied your space, looked at the paintings you had created, made you feel so much smaller. as if every brushstroke, every decoration choice you had made was scrutinized under his curious eye.
he must have noticed your growing unease, when his eyes found you again, amidst the space you had created for yourself. "i like what you did with the place." his tone was more playful again, but his eyes betrayed him. he was obviously gauging your reaction, though you didn't know what he would do with it. you offered up a timid smile followed by a quiet "thanks" and dabi decided to leave it at that.
"not gonna tell me, huh?" you huffed out a quiet laugh before finally pulling yourself back on your feet.
"nothing to tell."
he hummed, his eyes still busy with dissecting you. it was more than obvious, that he didn't buy it for one second.
"fair enough." you were about to say something, when he continued. "anything i can do to help with whatever you have nothing to tell about?"
your eyes widened. it didn't make any sense to you. why would he care so much? nobody was that kind to somebody, they barely knew. and yet, you couldn't bring yourself to believe, that he was entirely selfish in asking. maybe a part of you hoped, that it was genuine. and exactly that part of you answered, before the rational part had caught up to it. "can you make saturday not exist anymore?"
the confusion in dabi's expression was palpable. his eyebrow raised and his face pulled into a half-smile, unsure if you were joking. it was clear, that he was waiting for you to add something, anything, to make what you had just said, make at least a little bit of sense.
"this saturday specifically or the whole concept of saturday as a whole?"
and yet, he answered, as if your words had made perfect sense and were to be taken seriously. either that or he was just anticipating to right moment to mock you for it. not that you could've blamed him.
"only this one." you said, a chuckle catching in your throat.
dabi grinned, leaning back in your chair. "oh well, if it's only this one, i'm sure something can be done." by now you were almost entirely sure, that he was making fun of you. the way his grin kept growing was also a dead giveaway.
he didn't laugh, though. almost as if he understood, that the joke, silly as it was, had come from the same place as the breakdown you'd had only moments ago. you sighed. defeated and unsure of how to avoid saturday without doing something drastically stupid, – like fling yourself off the building. your eyes found dabi, again. he was still grinning. you just noticed, that it was a bit lopsided. his arms crossed in front of his chest again. this time, for some reason your mind specifically registered the very defined muscles ripping along his forearm up to his bicep. involuntarily a thought snaked its way into your mind and before you knew it, against your better judgement, you opened your mouth.
"remember when you said, that you owe me?" your eyes shot to the ground. regret was already settling deeply within you.
"what do you need?" there was a brief flicker of confusion in his eyes, but you were surprised all the same, that he didn't immediately shoot you down.
your fingers fiddled with the sleeves of your sweater. dabi had noticed, that your eyes seemed glued to the floor now. you were glad, that he gave you the time to sort out how the fuck you were going to ask that without sounding like a completely lunatic. a deep breath left your lungs before catching in your throat, letting you almost choke on it. one horrendously embarrassing coughing fit, later, you looked at him. he was still calm, appearing as nonchalant as ever; had you not noticed it. the faintest shake in his left leg.
"so, keep in mind, that this is probably gonna sound crazy to you–" you started. eyes darting back down the second they made contact with the intense blue, that was staring back at you. "– and you can totally say no and probably never talk to me again, once you realize how insane i am."
"y/n."
you didn't notice, that he pulled himself up from the chair.
"actually, you know what, just forget i said anything, i'm just gonna crawl in a hole and die."
you turned and fully planned to bolt out of the room, on your way to never be in the same space as dabi, ever again, but dabi was faster.
"y/n." he grabbed a hold of your wrist and turned you back around to face him. "spit it out."
his eyes didn't waver away from you for a second. they were as stern, as the tone in his voice, but not as demanding as the words would lead to believe. you ignored the urge to look back down. it would be much more embarrassing, if you shied away now.
you took a deep breath, taking a step back from him. dabi noticed and released your wrist, that you hadn't even noticed, he was still holding. "can you come with me to my mom's for dinner on saturday?"
the second the words left your lips, you could feel your feet begging you to run out the door, but they stayed planted. a brief flicker of surprise was in his eyes, before it hid behind a smug smirk.
"meeting your parents already?" his eyes briefly flitted up and down your body. "moving a little fast there, aren't we, doll?"
"that's not–" your ams crossed in front of you almost instinctively, as you stared up at him. he was a good bit taller than you and thoroughly enjoying that particular fact right now. again, you could only sigh, as he continued to be amused by the annoyed pout, that had taken over your features. "that's not what i meant."
you choked out another awkward laugh, realizing that now you actually had to find some kind of reasonable explanation for why you had even suggested that in the first place. he seemed equally as curious to hear you explain, given his now more relaxed smirk and the slight tilt of his head.
"my mom invited me to family dinner and i really don't want to show up there alone."
judging from the knit that depended between dabi's eyebrows, that explanation was less than satisfactory, but you were not ready to reveal the real reason. not to him, especially. you were aware, that there were already question marks surrounding your sudden reappearance in your brother's life – especially by his bandmates, but you didn't want them to change their view on you. especially not someone, who was as close to tomura, as he was.
"wouldn't shigs be there anyway?"
you scoffed. the sound left your throat entirely involuntarily and too fast for you to gain the conscious ability to stop it.
"nope." you just shrugged. technically, neither of you made a secret out of it, but you hadn't explained it in so long, that it felt a bit weird to rehash the family constellation in your mind. "she's not his mom and she really does not like him." the awkward smile on your face did little to play off the energy in the room, that lingered around your question.
"huh." was all that left dabi's mouth for a while.
he stared at you and the way your feet shuffled into the wooden floor below you and the way red patches formed around your cheeks from how embarrassed you were. it was almost cute, he thought. though not as endearing as the gray paint, that you had yet to notice was smeared on the tip of your nose.
"i would love to, but i'm worried we might give your mom the wrong impression." you had expected a straight up no or for him to just laugh in your face. but you had to give him credit for entertaining your dumbass as long as he had, even if only because he pitied you.
"believe me, if i tell you, that i'd rather she think, i brought my boyfriend, than deal with being on my own in there."
just the thought of being stuck there again with him sent shivers down your spine. you tried to hide the tremble of your fingers by gripping onto the fabric of your sweater. there was something about the way you had answered. how you had reacted specifically to the idea of being home alone, that reminded him of something. or rather someone. and maybe that was why the next sentence left his mouth.
"i'll do it."

you and tomura have been working for a while now, he came over to your place after class to do some recon and get the outline going.
“this is a nice setup you got here.” his voice sounds from the chair at your desk, you look up from your laptop and blink your eyes until he comes into focus. he’s staring at your gaming setup with a look of respect and you smile.
“oh thanks, my brother and friends helped me with it.” you smile as he nods and inspects the decorations around the area.
“your brother get you that?” he points to a random decoration, it’s clear he’s teasing as he points to one you know is far too feminine for keigo to have bought, and you burst into laughter while shaking your head.
“no, that one’s from my friends ochako and toga.” you push your laptop to the side, laying on your stomach, you’re closer to him now and can see the smirk on his face as he chuckled.
“wait, toga? like himiko toga?” he suddenly questions, sitting up higher in your desk chair.
“uh yeah, her and her girlfriend are my neighbors. you know her?” you tilted your head and frown as he starts scratching at his neck again. he seems to do that a lot when he’s stressed, anxious or nervous.
“yeah she’s a close friend of mine.” his scratching has gotten more aggressive so you drop the subject.
“cool, so are you hungry? my brother said i can use his card to get food.” you roll onto your back, grabbing your phone so you can order food for you both.
“i’m good thanks, actually i should probably head home.” he leans down to grab his bag while you glance at the time on your phone, 7:24pm.
“oh yeah duh, you’ve been here for hours of course you want to leave. you’re probably sick of me by now.” you laugh playfully but he shakes his head.
“nah you’re pretty cool y/n.” you nearly drop your phone as he shrugs nonchalantly.
“um oh, thank you.” you smile softly and he nods. “here, i’ll walk you out.” you stand from the bed as he checks to make sure he has everything.
you make idle conversation as you lead him out of your room and back down the hallway to your front door.
“we got a lot done today, surprisingly.” you voice and hear him hum behind you.
“yeah if we keep working like that we’ll get done in no time.” his steps fall in time with yours, and as you approach the door you hear voices in the outside hallway, keigo must be home.
“i guess it helps that we both know a lot about gaming.” you both laugh at that, you pull open the door right as keigo goes to put his key in the lock. there’s a gasp heard from across the hallway, followed by a loud smack and shushing noise.
you look up to see keigo standing there, his hand holding his keys limply in the air, with himiko and ochako behind him in front of their apartment.
“oh hey, he was just leaving.” you explain as the three of them stare at you. tomura gives a nod to your brother and a wave to the girls.
“since we exchanged numbers, you can text me if you get any more ideas or to set up a time to meet and work on it.” he’s back to scratching again and you frown, he gets anxious a lot apparently.
“yeah, of course. the same to you.” you smile and he nods, stepping past keigo, he waves to the girls once more.
“bye y/n.” he waves to you as he turns to leave.
“bye tomu.” you wave back and watch as he goes before looking back at keigo and the girls.
“what?” you ask, they don’t say anything.
“ohkay then, i’m gonna order some ramen and then maybe stream for a bit.” you say, turning to walk back to your room, himiko’s voice stops you.
“you should see if shigs wants to stream.” she suggests, voice teasing and you blush while you think about it.
level two; you know toga? completed!
one achievement unlocked; new nickname!
as somebody in the comments pointed out, how does reader not recognize his voice? to put it simply, his tone changes on the vibes and comfortability.
as shigs, he uses a modulator when streaming and has a deeper tone when on call with reader because he’s comfortable with her.
as tomu, he’s generally quiet and doesn’t speak much. when he does speak it’s with a neutral tone, unless talking about video games, then it becomes lighter to convey excitement.

“What do you want…” A tired voice came out from the receiver.
“Hi. And bye. I’m hanging up now.” You stammered out nervously, reaching over to press the ‘Hang Up.’ button on your screen.
“There is no fuckin’ way…” The sound of Katsuki shifting around in bed echoed around your room, “That you of all people decided to call me at… what’s the time?” He mumbled under his breath, “Two fifteen in the fuckin’ mornin’ just to hang up on my ass. Sumthin's up with you. And don’t fuckin’... deflect on my ass cause I’ll… fuckin’ kill you...” Katsuki’s voice trailed off, and it was obvious he was fighting the urge to fall asleep on call right now.
“It’s not a big deal I promise-”
“Bull fuckin’ shit. You called for a damn reason ‘nd I wanna hear it.”
“... I uh… Can’t sleep.”
You expected him to hang up. Call you an idiot for wasting his time. You expected him to yell at you, never wanting to speak to you after this.
You didn’t expect the silence, followed by a soft chuckle from Katsuki’s end which most definitely caused a fluttering feeling to grow in your gut. “And you thought? I’d be a good idea to call me? C’mon now babe, I thought you were smarter than this…” His voice was soft and breathy and holy shit that was so hot - call me babe again please.
You shook your head, snapping yourself out of the horrible train of thought you were heading down. Curse this late time and curse the idea of him laying in bed, the light of his phone illuminating his strong arms as he had one thrown across his face and - does Katsuki Bakugo sleep with a shirt on is the real question here?
“[Name]. You went all silent on me.”
“Huh? Oh right sorry- uh I can hang up if you want-”
“Nah… stay. I like you around.”
“...You do?”
“...Does it ever feel like I… don’t?”
“...No? I don’t think so?”
“Mmm… thought so… overthinking ass.”
“Shut up…” You sighed.
Katsuki’s soft breathing came out of the receiver. You looked over at your clock, two twenty three am.
“I might fall asleep soon.” You confessed, voice soft.
“Can I stay on the phone with you at least?” Katsuki’s voice whispered through the phone.
You nodded before remembering he couldn’t see your face, “Okay…”
“How was your day?”
You paused, back to this morning, arguing with him at work, smiling, going on patrol with him, laughing, making dinner and watching a movie with him, heart pounding.
“...Good…”
“...yeah?”
“Yeah… My day was good.”
Katsuki chuckled softly, “Hey… [Name]... ‘m gonna ask you now cause I know I’m gonna pussy out if I do it when I’m awake…”
“Hm?” You pulled your blankets over your body.
Katsuki’s voice came out mumbled, “...go out with me… please…”

“Hey bachira, what’s up” you said, walking up to him, jumping onto the hood of his car, matching his pose.
“Oh shi, wssup, i didn’t even see you,” he laughed, blowing the smoke from his cigarette in the opposite direction from you.
“You know, I've always wondered, this ‘monster’ that you speak of, what is it?” you asked. You and Bachira have been friends for a few months. You met him at one of the takeovers the racers organized. It was just them doing dangerous stunts and drifts.
You met him when the police arrived and everyone had to run for it. You came with a friend, so you had no car to run to, which is when Bachira dragged you to his car, throwing you into the passenger seat, and the rest is history.
“My monster, huh?” he said, throwing his head back. He thought about it for a second, tapping his fingers against the yellow metal of the car.
“It’s someone who tells me what to do. Especially when I’m racing, he’s beside me telling me how to beat everyone,” he smirks at you, letting the cigarette fall from his fingers and hit the ground.
You raised your eyebrows in amusement, laughing.
“Wow thats.. Something”
“So he’s not real,” you countered, turning to face him. He eyed you, lying back down onto the car. He stared up at the dark blue sky, not answering, before he spoke up again.
“He is, but others can’t see him.” you nodded, pressing your lip into a thin line to hold back a laugh that threatened to slip. He was just so cute, sometimes you couldn’t help but think of how childish he is in some ways.
“Though..” he started, trailing off, you looked down at him and saw a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“I have another monster which you can actually see,” he smirked. You stared in confusion, not understanding what he meant.
“What monster?”
“The monster between my legs.”
Huh.
Oh.
Oh.
You cleared your throat, covering your mouth.
“You look so damn cute trying to hold in your laugh,” Bachira chuckled, his fingers pinching at your sides with playful intent. A giggle slipped out as you buried your face in your hand—but what he didn’t notice was that you weren’t just hiding your laughter.
You were hiding your face that turned a soft shade of pink.

you were already a pretty light sleeper under normal conditions, so it wasn't surprising that the loud creaking of the floorboards woke you up in the middle of the night. at first you just assumed, that tomura had gotten up to get himself a glass of water and were ready to go back to sleep without a second thought. but something didn't feel right. the steps felt heavier, too heavy for someone who had just rolled out of bed.
immediately your chest tightened. thoughts raced to your head about who the intruder could possibly be. one thought in particular clung to you, but you refused to let yourself entertain it. everything rational within you screamed for you to text tomura and get both of your asses out of here. and yet, not a second later you had hushed across your room to hear the intruder better. your ear was glued to the door, trying to make out any sound.
there were only a few more creaks, followed by a heavy thud. the steps were a lot lighter now and the floorboards didn't creak anymore. it was safe to assume that the person had taken their shoes off. but why? if they had broken in, why would they bother taking their shoes off? you knew, you should be a lot more terrified, but for some reason you were just confused.
a deep breath escaped your lips before you slowly pressed down the door handle. this was a stupid decision. you knew full well, that you should have probably run the other way the moment you had heard any type of noise. the smartest decision would have been to climb out the window and use the little ledge on the window sill to climb over to tomura's room and wake him up. instead you gently pushed the door open and stepped into the pitch black living room.
you couldn't hear any steps. the sudden dead silence enveloped you like an eery, dark cloak. you had expected to see a figure move through the room, but there was none. there was no way you had imagined all of it, was there? from the door to your room, you could see the entire living room. to see the kitchen, though, you would have to round the corner, because the wall from the entry hallway that connected to the kitchen island blocked your view to it. there was a slight rustling sound again, followed by the fridge being opened? you'd never heard of people going through fridges, when breaking and entering, but in all fairness, in this economy, you couldn't blame them for trying. obviously they didn't know your brother well, though. if they did, they would know his fridge wasn't worth opening. there was never anything worthwhile in there, except for energy drinks, ice cream and half empty take-out containers if you were lucky.
"fuck's sake!" a deep voice hissed.
you were pretty sure now, that it was a guy, but you couldn't place the voice. that was much more relieving, that it should be, but a man you didn't know was very likely to be safer, than the ones you did know. still, you grabbed tomura's keys from the little bowl in the entry way – careful not to let the keychains dangle. you tiptoed over to the kitchen, the cold metal of the keys digging into your skin. you kept close to the wall, so he wouldn't see you, but by the time you reached the kitchen island, he was already walking back toward the living room. you could only hope, that he hadn't seen you yet. you pushed your body into the wall, as if that would make it swallow you.
he stopped walking. you decided to take that second to try and at least make out some features. he was dressed so dark, that his frame almost entirely blended into the pitch black background. he was wearing a hooded jacket, hiding any feature you would have otherwise maybe seen, beneath it. his arm shifted, at least that's what you assumed it was, since your eyes still hadn't gotten used to the dark. that proved unnecessary a second after, because his elbow hit the light switch. the sudden shift in lighting momentarily blinded you and somehow turned off the alarm signals, that should have told you to get the fuck out of there.
"not running off this time?" you jumped back hearing the playful tone of his voice.
blinking a few times to get used to the very bright light, you stared up at him. when you recognized who he was, you felt both relief that he wasn't some psycho killer and a little annoyed that he had obviously noticed you a bit ago and messed with you for whatever reason. you had been right about him wearing all black, though. his thick hooded jacket covered his pitch black hair almost entirely. it didn't however cover the shit-eating grin, that he was staring down at you with.
"to be fair, you were a strange man in my brother's apartment." you crossed your arms in front of your chest. "and i was in a towel."
"fair enough." he laughed pulling the hood of his jacket down.
even though you hadn't really looked at him, when you had bolted out of the room yesterday, you had seen his face a bunch online before. he had been everywhere together with the rest of lov, when their first single blew up. now that dabi's face was lit entirely, you could see the black ink snaking its way up his neck from below his jacket. there weren't any on his face, but he had more than enough piercings to make up for it. just from a quick glance you could see little silver balls adorning his right eyebrow, three more on the left side of his nose and he had snake bites. his black hair was tousled into every possible direction, sticking out in messy spikes. he was taller than you and a good bit broader, too, though that could just as well be the thickness of his jacket.
"didn't mean to wake you up, by the way." he unzipped his jacket and lazily dropped it onto the kitchen island. even though the hoodie that he was wearing under it was baggy and obviously intended to fit loosely, you could see the broad shoulders underneath it. the tattoos from his neck obviously continued under the collar of his hoodie.
"you're good." you smiled, awkwardly shifting your feet.
he just nodded and slumped onto the couch. you assumed that to have been the end of your conversation and where just about ready to leave, when he spoke up again. "i'm dabi by the way."
it was kind of funny that he felt the need to introduce himself, when you both knew, that you were aware who he was. maybe he just thought it was the polite thing to do.
"y/n." you said quietly. you weren't sure if tomura had mentioned your name. himiko had told you earlier tonight, that tomura had never mentioned you, so you probably were right to introduce yourself. dabi just hummed, resting his feet on the coffee table next to three open cans of monster and the bag of chips tomura had opened sometime before you had moved in. his eyes turned to you again, looking at you, almost as if he was trying to remember something.
"wait, i know you." you furrowed your brows looking back at him. "didn't you say you didn't like lov on twitter bout a week ago?"
if only you had taken the advice of the smarter part of your brain and climbed out the window when you had the chance. you laughed awkwardly, wishing you could be anywhere but here – preferably somewhere six feet under ground. and not right in front of the bassist of the band, you had publicly claimed hating, even though it had been for a joke. the whole thing had blown up completely with their vicious fans literally blowing up your phone with hate comments and threats. you remembered vividly that somehow dabi, of all people, had found your post and even commented. tomura had found the entire thing hilarious, because of course he did. but he had never mentioned to dabi that the person who had made that viral post, was his sister.
"i didn't actually mean that." you choked out an awkward laugh. dabi's head tilted to the side. he stared at you so intensely now, as if he are genuinely curious about the explanation. you just then noticed how brightly blue his eyes were. which was only accented with the black color that was smudged all around his eyes. and it looked like he was wearing black mascara as well. "i honestly just wanted to mess with tomu. never expected that shit to blow up the way it did."
he looked at you for a good second, as if he was processing what you had just said. and then he just straight up snorted out a laugh.
"so what i'm hearing is you don't actually think we suck?"
"didn't say that, did i?" you decided to be petty and mess with him a little. as payback for him messing with you earlier.
from the way his eyebrow raised, you assumed that he hadn't expected that answer.
"wait for real?"
you just shrugged, trying your best to keep a straight face. he kept his bright eyes on you, trying to gauge your expression for any sign if you were being serious or not. he gave up a few seconds after.
"come on, you're killing me here."
you laughed seeing how invested he seemed to be. it was kind of nice to see, how serious he was taking this, especially since you know how much the band meant to your brother. you decided to make him suffer no longer.
"i'm kidding." it was funny to watch the actual relief on his face. "most of your stuff's actually really good."
"just most, huh?" he leaned back on the couch very quickly switching to his grin from before.
you stared at him with a deadpan expression, which of course, he found even more amusing.
"obviously not what i meant." you rolled your eyes.
dabi let out a soft chuckle, still actively amused by annoying you. even though, he was sure, that you weren't actually as annoyed as you tried to look. and he would've been right. "you have a favorite?"
"hm?"
dabi grinned seeing your head tilt, not understanding what he wanted from you.
"favorite song, i mean."
the question left you more stumped, than it probably should have. you had been honest with dabi, you really did like all of their music. both the heavier rock songs they played and the very few slower songs they had – even their covers were usually very nice to listen to. even though, tomura usually asked you for your opinion the moment, they released anything, you had never really been able to pick a clear favorite. though you had been able to give him an answer earlier, that was usually heavily influenced by the way you were feeling on that particular day.
"don't think i could pick that easily." you shrugged. "but i've been listening to blue from the new ep a lot."
something lit up in his eyes, when you said that. it was subtle enough, thought for you to not really register it as out of the ordinary. dabi just hummed in response, not commenting on your choice at all. silence befell the two of you. the realization hit, that it was probably well over four am in the morning and though, tomura had the ability to sleep through five fire alarms blaring at the same time and would not be woken up by the two of you just talking, you should probably sleep at some point, if you wanted to at least pretend to pay attention in your 8am class.
"i should probably head back." you said, already turning on your heel, when dabi stopped you.
"hold on." he got up from the couch and was now standing barely two feet away from you. "give me your number."
"huh?" you couldn't help but stare at him for a couple seconds. the surprise on your face was palpable and probably really obvious, but you had genuinely not expected him to say that. especially not as demanding as he did. he just smiled, completely ignoring how you had reacted, which you were sure he was doing purposefully.
"you live here too, now. 's only fair, i give you a heads up when i'm coming over." he explained.
that made a lot of sense, actually. and it was really considerate of him. you quickly hushed into the kitchen and grabbed a little piece of paper from one of the cabinets. you quickly scribbled your number on it and handed it to him. he thanked you and haphazardly folded it before letting it slip into the side pocket of his pants. it didn't really occur to you, until then, that you had given an entirely strange guy your number, but you figured, that it wasn't that much of an issue, considering that tomura was close to him.
"it was nice to meet you, dabi." you smiled at him. " good night."
"night, y/n."
