When people first found out that you and Jungkook were friends, you received a very predictable, repetitive sequence of reactions.

First came disbelief. It was the most comprehensible one, at least from your perspective, taking into consideration that you and Jungkook were completely different people. He was loud (sometimes too loud) and outgoing, probably knew at least ninety percent of the campus population by name and city of origin. Jungkook was warm, friendly, the type of guy that you’d confess all your worries to if given enough time. You, on the other hand, was more on the “colder” side — you weren’t as inviting with strangers, and didn’t mind going through moments of awkward silence. Jungkook was a talker and you were a listener; he was a daydreamer and you were a brute realist: maybe that was why your friendship worked so well. But most people couldn’t really get it. 

Second came the questions — the doubts, the sideway glances, even a few bitter comments if you were unlucky enough. Jungkook had kind of a reputation when it came to sleeping around, so most people jumped to the conclusion that either you were his favorite plaything (which might have been the most offensive thing you’ve ever heard) or that you were simply the rare one he had friendzoned because he didn’t want to fuck you (a big runner-up to that prize). Eventually, though, you settled their anguishes simply by saying that you knew each other ever since you were kids. 

Which took you to the final phase: relief and acceptance. The ones who saw you as a threat instantly relaxed, and the ones who couldn’t understand why he would “waste his time” with “someone like you” quickly understood that it was a deep, innocent connection that he was just “too sweet to let go.” Obviously, that didn’t make you feel any better. 

Truth was, it was kind of hard being friends with Jungkook. Mostly because the boy casted a light so strong that it was almost impossible not to stay in his shadow, but also because you always felt like you had to justify your existence every time he chose you instead of anyone else. You were the person he ran to hug once his team won; you were the one he ditched other people for, just to hang out with you. It made you insecure. And, yeah, there was also the fact that you had been madly in love with him for some time now, but that was unimportant. 

Well, until he asked you to be his (fake) girlfriend, that was.

You watched quietly as Jisoo upturned the whole living room. She had been searching for ten minutes now, finally deeming to acknowledge your sprawled figure on the couch.

Drumming your knee up and down, you wondered if a better pair of roommates had ever existed on earth. It was a match made in heaven really.

Both of were kind of stupid. And lazy.

“Why don’t you dig around some more? I’ll tell you when you’re tired.”, you replied with a yawn.

A pillow smacked your yawning face, making you choke on air. “I’m getting late here, dumbass. Some of us have to work in the morning.”

You smirked, leaning up on your elbows. “You jealous?”

“Hell yes.” She slumped down beside you, snatching your plate of sliced bananas from the coffee table and shoving some in her mouth. “Why didth you geth this inthernship againh? You’re noth qualifiedh.”

“Swallow the banana first.” You frowned. “Wait that came out wrong.”

Gulping down some water, Jisoo spoke again. “I’m serious here. How did you manage to get a paid internship where you only have to show up in the evening?”

You snorted. “I’m on the night shift, genius. I managed it because I’m a computer wiz.”

She rolled her eyes, getting up to search again. “Computer wiz, my ass.”

You sighed, laying on your back again.

Getting an internship at an entertainment company such as Bighit might do wonders for your resumé, but you knew exactly what you were in for. Most likely site maintenance or god forbid, tech support.

And you also knew that most people might jump at a chance to have any kind of job at an entertainment company, if nothing else to just brag about meeting celebrities daily. But you were not naive on that front either. You were probably going to be stuck in a tiny cubicle all night, desperately waiting for a glitch to appear on your screen in order to break out of the monotony.

But you were not complaining, the money was decent enough and this was just a stepping stone on your way to become an accomplished software developer.

You stared at the number on the scale, the number haunted you, it’s the biggest number you’ve ever seen on it and you would have let tears fall if your roommate hadn’t walked in.

She looked over your shoulder and down at the scale.

“Yikes,” She sighed,” maybe you should consider finally using that gym membership I got you.”

Your pulse quickened at the mention of the worst Christmas you’ve ever had in your life.

It was supposed to be the best since it was the first time your crush Kim Taehyung, agreed to go to your party. You wore this really pretty red dress, which in hindsight was definitely a mistake since he said you reminded him of Mrs. Claus and when he saw the hurt in your eyes he added cute to it.

You just smiled and hoped everything would be perfect and fun.

But it wasn’t.

When it was time to open presents and your roommate gave you an envelope you thought was a gift card to your favorite restaurant. A gift that she usually gives you, but when you opened you saw a membership card to your local gym.

You were mortified. You looked around the room only to see your other friends giggling along and praising her because it was just so nice of her to be thinking of your health.

Even Taehyung laughed.

You still haven’t been able to face him since then. It was also when the voice in your head got a little bit meaner than usual.

You shook your head to rid you of that memory.

“I’m actually going to go later today,” You smiled proudly,” I want to document my whole progress and-“

“Are you actually going to do it this time though?”

You bit your lip.

She’s right. Are you?

“I am,” you said above a whisper,” I have to.”

She hummed,” that’s good y/n.”

You loved your roommate Yoon, she was friendly, strong, beautiful and thoughtful. Sometimes her comments did hurt you but she was just looking out for you.

She just wants what’s best for you.

You went to the gym when google said it was the least busy.

Which was at 1pm.

You were instantly met with a couple of guys and another girl, it definitely smelled like a gym.

You suddenly felt pumped and excited.

You looked around and everyone was doing their own thing, no one paid attention to you.

You won’t pay attention to them, well you might have paid just a tiny bit of attention to one guy in particular. He was lightly jogging on a treadmill but he was gorgeous, his hair was dark, sweaty and in his face, and oh god he had a sleeve filled with random tattoos.

He probably hates girls like you.

The voice in your head made sense.

You made your way to a treadmill, just one away from the muscley guy.

You hyped yourself up.

You got this.

Here we go, just turn it on.

Wait, how do you turn it on?

The treadmill had so many buttons and adjustments that made no sense to you whatsoever.

You sighed, defeated. It was barely your first day and it had already gone horribly, embarrassingly wrong. You wanted to cry, you wanted to go home and maybe eat those macaroons your mom sent you but you remembered Yoon was home and would most definitely tell you how she knew you'd give up so easily.

You bit back tears, swallowing the heavy lump in your throat. You were determined to do this though. You don't know how but you were going to do it.

Luckily the man next to you had been glancing towards you ever since he heard you sigh loudly every now and then. He could tell it was your first day, he remembered how nervous he was on his own first day. Maybe that's why he decided to help you, or maybe it was because he found you so breathtakingly beautiful he couldn’t help but feel like wanting to take care of you.

He pushed those thoughts deep down remembering how his best friend told him how weird and disgusting she felt when men did so much as even look at her at the gym. He didn't want you to think he was like those types of men.

He looked over to you, luckily you didn’t have headphones in.

"Hey," the man leaned over the treadmill," if you don't mind, I can show you how to turn it on."

Your face morphed into one of distrust, you felt embarrassed that he's offering to help you.

How much of a fatass do you have to be to not know how to turn a treadmill on?

You huffed, sometimes you just gotta swallow your pride and receive any help you can get.

"Thank you." You avoided his dark eyes. Something about him made your heart race and your ears bloom with blush.

"I'm Jungkook by the way." He smiled.

"I'm y/n..”

You didn't want to smile because of the embarrassment you felt but his was so contagious that you couldn't help your lips as they twitched into the most awkward smile you've ever worn.

He was even more handsome up close and his tattoos added on to how intimidating he looked. Once he spoke though, it was like that mask of intimidation flew off and you were met with the most genuine smiles you’ve ever seen.

“You gotta put this thing in here,” Jungkook grabbed the little plastic cube that was attached and placed it over one of the little buttons,” see? If you lose control just pull it off and it’ll stop. Now this is the speed, and this is the incline.”

Incline? What the heck was an incline? This was much more complicated than you thought it would be.

Maybe you should just give up.

You sighed again, making Jungkook glance at you. He recognized the confusion in your face.

“The incline is where you can make the treadmill feel like you’re walking on a hill,” he explained,” the bigger the number the steeper it’ll be.”

“Oh.” You mentally noted.

“I don’t recommend using it until you get comfortable just walking on it, you’ve never been on one before right?”

You pressed your lips in a thin line.

Was it that obvious?

“I mean, unless you want to! You can work out however you want, I don’t- I don’t make the rules,” Jungkook spoke fast to clear up any misunderstandings,” I just assumed I’m sorry.”

Did he just apologize?

He didn’t even say anything worth apologizing for but yet here he was over explaining himself, clearly regretful of what he said.

He cleared his throat,” I’m- I‘m gonna go..if you need any help just come get me.”

You nodded, fixing the speed of the treadmill. You watched him walk to the weights and maybe your eyes stayed on him a little longer than they were supposed to be.

You couldn’t help it, he was absolutely amazing. It was like those big weights were made out of paper. He handled them so easily and you were in awe, wishing you could be that strong. He also looked extremely sexy but that thought was for another time.

30 minutes later he came back to do his cool down on the treadmill next to you.

Jungkook smiled at you before setting his speed to match yours.

Your heart fluttered.

It felt like you two were silently walking together and suddenly you didn’t feel all that nervous anymore. You had someone there, he didn’t pressure you, he didn’t make any back hand comments, he just walked with you and occasionally gave you a smile.

Maybe today wasn’t as bad as you think.

Jungkook snapped you out of your own thoughts when he grunted and you decided it might be time to end your own workout.

He helped you clean your machine before he started gossiping.

"I take it today is your first day?" Jungkook asked as he wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Y-Yes." You rubbed your thumbs together nervously.

You waited for him to say something that would most likely make you regret accepting his help. Your heart pounded in your chest as you waited for him to criticize you.

But instead his eyes smiled before his lips did.

"Well welcome!" Jungkook patted you on the back, a little bit rougher than intended but it's the gesture that counts," I think you did really good for it being your first day!'

The pain in your chest eased up a little.

"You think so?" You basked under his praise like a flower soaking in the light from the sun, and just like a flower you felt yourself grow a little bit taller. ”Definitely! I mean you were beast on speed 3.”

He grinned hoping to make you smile just a little bit since he could see how nervous you were.

He waited.

There it was.

You looked so pretty smiling and he wondered if you smiled often or if you were always cute and shy.

You tried holding back your smile, but you couldn't help how nice it feels to be told that you did a good job instead of being told you weren't trying hard enough.

Maybe today would be the beginning of change, and you hoped this change would be like spring and blossom the bud of love in your heart for yourself.

Jungkook showed you where the water fountain was so he could fill his water bottle up and your heart swooned just a little when he offered to fill yours up too. You graciously handed it to him, feeding giddy from his gesture.

“Maybe tomorrow I can show you how to do the step climber.”

A scary name for a machine but you felt excited because of how excited he seemed to be.

“I’ll see you tomorrow then?” Jungkook cutely wiggled his eyebrows.

“Y-Yea,” You avoided his eyes, afraid to catch them judgingly eyeing your body,” around the same time..”

You didn’t want to come back if you were being honest, but something about his energy eased your racing mind. You almost felt like he wanted to see you again.

You always were a dreamer.

Jungkook patted your back again, a lot softer this time since he noticed you rubbed the spot he patted you on last time.

“Cool! Great job today y/n!” He said before he walked off into the men's locker room.

You were left standing there buzzing with such a scary new feeling that you welcomed regardless of its unfamiliarity.

But then that little voice in your head nipped the flower that started to blossom in your chest.

He doesn’t want to see you again.

Why would he?

Look at you.

He felt bad for you, that’s why he helped you.

He’ll probably make fun of you with his friends.

He would never like anyone like you.

You bit your lip, agreeing with that little voice that seemed to control you so easily.

But maybe you should come tomorrow just in case.
