Now I need to get used to this now new update on my phone.

can’t decide between first person or third, any tips to help? I usually write in third for fanfics but I’m now writing my own story and am so torn

First Person vs. Third Person POV

Both point of views have different abilities to narrate a story. I'm not going to use pros and cons for this, because I believe that it depends on the way you want to tell a story, if these aspects are helpful for you or not.

First Person POV

The narrator is a direct part of the story and narrates what they see and feel with using "I" (or "we").

Features of first-person pov:

it offers a direct link to the story

the story can feel more real and believable

the narrator is part of the situation, but you as the author can still decide if they are an active participant or if they are watching from the sidelines

the whole story is them talking about their experiences

therefore, the story is always subjective and full of what the narrator thinks, feels and believes to be true

if they are also not telling the story in the moment, but rather recounting it, they can also recount some things differently than how they actually happened

a first person pov is the easiest way to create an unreliable narrator

Third Person POV

The narrator is the author, who is detached from the story and narrates the lives of characters without being one of them. The narrator calls the characters by their name or their pronouns.

You have three different options:

Third-person omniscient:

This narrator is all-knowing and can tell the whole story as it is, from every perspective, but not limited to a single character. They know what every character is thinking and feeling and what their motivations are.

Third-person limited:

This narrator is limited to the inner feelings of a limited amount of characters, often just the protagonist.

Third-person objective:

This narrator tells the story completely objective, just telling what can be seen without commenting on it and not going into the thoughts and motivations of specific characters.

Features of third-person pov:

it allows the reader to emerge themselves into the thoughts and motivations of one or more characters, therefore making it almost feel like first-person pov

it can also be objective, with just the characters' dialogues and actions telling the reader about them

it allows the author to jump between scenes and times more easily

the author can tell multiple storylines at the same time (also possible with multiple first-person povs, but the jump between different times is easier for the reader in third-person)

by using third-person pov the author can decide completely on how much they want to tell the reader at any given point

some very important info re: paid accounts~

I am not a lawyer, but I can decently interpret legalese and, being as I also suffer from tl;dr syndrome and assume others may as well, I took one for the team and went through the updated TOS for the post+ accounts and highlighted (what I understand to be) the most pertinent information, which ultimately comes down to this:

You cannot monetize copyrighted works (aka charge and earn money from fanfic, fanworks, etc) and if you do decide to put your fanworks behind a paywall via Tumblr, when you are inevitably sued, Tumblr will not protect you and will not defend you and you alone, personally, will be responsible for whatever monetary damages said lawsuit results in.

If anyone is a lawyer and knows I've gotten any of this wrong, please do not hesitate to correct me/this post.

1. Your paid account will not be hosted by tumblr; it is routed through a 3rd party.

2. By signing up for a paid account, you're entering into an agreement with Stripe, so in addition to Tumblr's TOS, you are also bound to Stripe's TOS.

3. Stripe, like Tumblr, will not defend you or protect you against any lawsuits.

4. Furthermore, you may end up owing Stripe money (indemnify = compensate)

5. Tumblr's TOS specifically states that you can't put any content on your post+ account that violates any laws, including laws that protect intellectual property rights of others. This is super important, because Tumblr's post+ FAQ also states that you can post anything that you would regularly post on tumblr, which I'm sure many will take to mean that gifsets, fanworks, etc are fair game, since all of that stuff can be posted on tumblr now. However, the difference is, you're not making money from the fanworks you're posting or reblogging now. Once money enters the equation, the game changes.

Tumblr is making it seem like any and all content goes for post+ accounts, knowing 90% of this site is fanworks. This is not true and you'll be opening yourself up for lawsuits if you charge for fanworks.

6. Tumblr further disclaims any and all liability in any legal issues.

tl;dr: Please do not make a post+ account, bc you will be opening yourself to lawsuits and if that happens, Tumblr's response will be not our problem, you agreed to all the terms which said you couldn't do that, sorry not sorry. Please protect yourself.

I want to say that I hardly see a lot of vanilla smut on here. Some good and soft smut. Not that rough smut. Smacking the ass and all. Always want to see the gentle smut or a first time smut.

Also to point out. It would be good to see some trans too. I love to read some of that too.

self care for when you hit rock bottom

i fucking hate self care posts made by neurotypicals so here’s one from someone who Actually Gets It

-can’t shower or take a bath? me either. dry shampoo can make your hair look and feel cleaner, and baby wipes or makeup wipes work great to get the top layer of grime off your skin.

-can’t wash your sheets and make your bed? i feel you. push your blankets out of the way and shake the crumbs off your sheet. it will at least be a bit more comfortable.

-can’t even change out of your dirty pajamas? been there. hit yourself with some febreeze and a lint roller. if you can, brush your hair. if you can’t, hair ties and bobby pins are fantastic.

-can’t make anything to eat? same. if you can, there’s no shame in ordering food. in fact, it’s probably better you eat something rather than go hungry. if you can’t, try and find something that comes pre-made or takes minimal effort to make. at the very least, drink some water.

can’t respond to messages or reach out for help? yeah, i get that. set an alarm for a few hours from now and respond to any messages you need to once you’ve given yourself time to prepare. if they’re Important Messages that need Professional Responses, you can find fill-in-the-blank format rough drafts on google. as far as personal messages go, don’t feel bad for sending a mass “I’m sorry, I’m in a personal emergency right now. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.” response to everyone.

-can’t even sleep because it’s so bad? asmr videos always knock me out, personally, but i also watch a lot of bob ross. just try to find something quiet and soothing to use as background noise and take your mind off it, or at least give you a more peaceful environment to think about it.

-can’t go for a walk/drive? try opening the blinds or curtains. you’re still exposing yourself to the outside world. baby steps. (i also play animal crossing or sims; it may be virtual but fuck it. i went on a walk.)

-can’t go into work/school? let people know. let your coworkers or classmates know it’s an emergency and you can’t make it. give yourself up to two days, but then you have to go back. ask to have your work emailed to you so you know what you missed.

-can’t brush your teeth and wash your face? makeup or baby wipes and gum or mouthwash. don’t let yourself physically rot bc you’re rotting emotionally.

-remember that you’ve been here before. if you survived then you can survive now. that’s what this is about- survival. you don’t have to be living your Best Life. right now, it’s more than enough that you’re alive.
