a lot of artists dont even have the security of a paycheck and are barely getting by on grants that are first and foremost meant to cover their projects and not themselves some countries dont have grants! so they rely solely on the art market and gallery support which is. a nightmare most of the time they dont even get that grant or solo exhibition or auction sale and the amount of money and opportunities galleries are willing to give is getting smaller and smaller. galleries themselves are dying there is something to be said about artists like damien hirst or olafur eliasson who can afford to hire a large team for their studios. and garner all the credit for their art that wouldnt have been made possible if it werent for their assistants and researchers. while most of the time also not properly compensating them (tho iirc olafur eliasson has been pretty upfront about the contributions of his studio..? at least from the interviews i watched w him) (hirst still fucking sucks tho) but that type of artist is rare. and making them the standard form of The Artist is... weird. not to mention their workers are also artists
