Heavenly Tyrant is out today! It's a weird feeling after so many years of losing hair over it. It didn't feel like I was capable of finishing the book until I wrote the last word. The publication process was not a happy one. I'm not doing any events for it, not even a launch. I'm typing this while lying in bed and thinking about what a terrible year it's been. We joked about 2020 being the worst year ever, yet every year since has been progressively worse. And the coming years do not show any indication of being better.
But a big theme in Heavenly Tyrant is that wherever there is oppression, there WILL be resistance. I have had as much heartwarming support from peers, friends, and readers as I've faced heinous shenanigans this year. When a very, very famous author I met this summer asked me "Are you a controversial person?" after I told him about the stuff I was going through, I answered "To many who hold power? Yes. To regular people? I don't think so."
I want to thank all of you who gave me the faith to say something like that. Most people I know are on the right side of history. If you aren't - I don't want to know you.
Anyway, the book. Heavenly Tyrant is SO different from Iron Widow that I'm pretty nervous about whether people would like it. I want to ask you all to adjust your expectations going in. You're not going to get another breakneck-paced story about a Girlboss Going Smash. The smashing was the easy part. Rebuilding what she broke into something better is much, much harder. The story is a lot slower by necessity, and the problems she faces are way more complicated to deal with. I also ask that you read until the end before making a judgement because, well, developments you don't like might not be endgame! And there's a book 3 coming! (This was always supposed to be a trilogy; it's just that my publisher was only willing to buy 2 books from me at first. They changed their minds after seeing the preorder numbers for IW.)
Finally, I want to bring everyone's attention to the five songs the Bookish Songs Collective wrote specifically for Iron Widow! They're now available to stream whenever you get your music. It blows my mind that MY book would get such epic music?! I can't thank or praise them enough. Seriously, CHECK THE EP OUT.
this website’s easy watch. *dangles a bunch of greek gods like keys*
Avatar where everything is the same except zuko has a glass eye.
I say everything’s the same, it wouldn’t be. Specifically during the water tribe arcs and potentially the desert he’d struggle cuss I assume having a glass eye is dangerous in terms of hypothermia. Like an eye getting to dry or to teary must be dangerous. Plus artificial eyes need to be cleaned and that must be a bit hard in the desert what with all the sand……. This is a fantastic idea for a cannon divergence zuko joins the gang during season 1 fic oh god.
One thing I love about the live action avatar is that Ozai places Zuko's hand over his heart before burning his face off. He shows that small bit of vulnerability because he KNOWS Zuko would never do what he’s about to do. It’s just this small little mocking action of “look I’m OFFERING you the opportunity to stop this. To win. But you would NEVER do that because you are weak. Because you haven’t got the guts to do what I’m about to do”. Ozai has so much faith that Zuko would never turn against him and he is right.
you know the cats vs dogs movie from like 2001? the one where the cats/dogs are in a super high tech war without their owners knowing and there's one REALLY fluffy white cat that gave me nightmares that I was gonna wake up with it suffocating me? yeah anyway all I can think about is a Chishiya (the cats duh) vs Arisu (the dogs. duh) war with like Hatter (Arisus side) and Aguni ( chishiyas side) as their owners (not kinky it just sounds weird but I swear context please context). honestly idk if this post makes sense I just wanted to talk about this movie because I rembered it from having a nightmare of that one stupid fucking murderous evil cat again. that, that cat is MY enemy.
Zuko realises he's the avatar whilst out at sea and is like "OH! I've done it I've found the avatar...I'M THE AVATAR! I can finally help father and reclaim my honour by serving my nation" and starts charting a course for home. And next to him Iroh is breaking down realising he has to tell his son nephew that his father will kill him the moment he even implys that he's the avatar. And that's the 'nicest' thing he'll do. Most likely he'll lock Zuko away so that the cycle doesn't continue but also that Zuko isn't a political threat. Fake his death ya know. Maybe he might even force Zuko into the avatar state before killing him so he realllly kills the cycle.
Thinking about one post here that I read a few years back, where, instead of Aang surviving the air nomad genocide, he dies with them, and the Avatar is reincarnated along the cycle, and by the time of the show, the Avatar is now in the Fire Nation, and it's. Zuko. And I cannot stop thinking about how funny this is as a concept. The same guy who yelled at the sky to strike lightning at him. That's the Avatar now.
Head empty just arisu getting fucjing smashed at a bar and being an annoying person who climbs on a table but it being one of those sticky shitty bar tables so it fucjing topples over and arisu crashes to the floor in pain covered in beer.
Kuina and usagi by the bar recording him cuss they know it’s gonna be fucking helarious tomorrow and chishiya and pissed screaming at arisu for spilling his drink again
no thoughts just Kuina making those shitty little bird feeders I was forced to make in scouts where you’d get a pine cone, cover it in like syrup then cover it in bird seed and tie it to string and hang it up. they were shit but if you make enough you can make a cool sorta chime that gets lots of birds ( and squirrels)
more discord shit but this time gasp its a full convo. sorta. idk Chishiya: are you watching Logan paul vines?
Arisu: no I’m not but I have them on constant replay in my head as my own form of eternal torture Arisu: its like a foreplay of hell Kuina: Maybe I’m just stupid but foreplay of hell is the most terrifying combination of words I’ve heard in a while Usagi: no yeah I’m going to cry on my floor over that
