I've been thinking about seer powers and just what it all includes cuss the show kinda died before we could properly learn. Obviously Ethan can see the future, and I think the past? But what else, what more is there?
In fiction and older mythologys 'seer's or other prophetic people normally invoke a god of some kind so I think it would be intresting if Ethan found a spirit of a god from the old religion. I'm not saying he becomes religious, more aware of supernatrual forces that we might perceive as gods. I think the forces he'd most likely worship are 'life' 'death' and 'nature'. Obvious and a bit lame I know, but life and death are a cycle and are essentially the withered the past and the ever growing future. With nature, its a mixture of the two and connects him to his friends.
Another thing is (at least in western mythologys) A LOT of phrophetic people end up having problems with their eyes, either becoming blind or loosing them. It's obvious Irony, but I do think it would be intresting that Ethans normal vision changes the longer he's awakened his powers. Maybe its to the extent of needing glasses and eventually going fully blind, although I think a more intresting take would be for Ethan to be more aware of supernatrual elements with either a 'aura' arround non-humans and magic artifacts. Another option would be to see 'fate striken objects' or things like the red strings of fate. Just small bits of the future that he KNOWS exist and he can't change, but play no obvious goal to himself.
The more he uses his visions the stronger they can get. Things like being able to walk arround them, letting them stay for longer, maybe even hearing peoples thoughts whilst in the vision. I think an intresting idea would be that he could 'retrigger' a vision if he really forces it, but it leaves him with a migrane as it takes a lot of mental energy. Maybe even physical. The gang starts carrying sweets on them so he can atleast get a small sugar rush so that he doesn't collapse or get to shakey.
One last thing that I think would be sick, though holds no purpose to his powers, is whilst he's dreaming he has 'visions'. BUT these visions arn't always focused on him or his life. Sometimes they arn't even happening during his life time. This leads to him writing multiple note books of his preminitions like Nostradamus or the good omens Agnes Nutter. He predicts all sorts of things and eventually his books become marveled for their 99% accuracy. I think it would be cool to see a reverse of this where he has flashback visisons and he's in history class and the teachers all "and we will never know what Agatha Christie did for those 11 days she vanished" and he has to physicall fight the urge to shout that HE knows because HE saw her in his dreams. His history essays are always exciting to read because he pulls a LOT of facts outa his arse by accident.
MAKE ME A BOY GOD. DO IT. STOP BEING A PUSSY.
There must be an avatar who was dating a bender from each nation. They got a girlfriend who can bend earth, a boyfriend who bends water, a bro (romantically) who bends fire and a honey (romantically) who bends air.
They must, it’s the only way to truly ensure balance amongst the elements
One thing I love about the live action avatar is that Ozai places Zuko's hand over his heart before burning his face off. He shows that small bit of vulnerability because he KNOWS Zuko would never do what he’s about to do. It’s just this small little mocking action of “look I’m OFFERING you the opportunity to stop this. To win. But you would NEVER do that because you are weak. Because you haven’t got the guts to do what I’m about to do”. Ozai has so much faith that Zuko would never turn against him and he is right.
Not to be rude but if your opinion is "random 'friendship is magic' moments in shows ruin the entire thing"....I don't think FairyTail is worth watching for you??? I see that as the main critism and like thats kinda intertwined with the themes of Fairy Tail.
Like the fights are essentially just there to look cool and to force the bonds between the guild into a position of strain. They are blatantly plot devices and they don't try to hide it. They are entertaining because your main characters are casting magic and hitting people; what they arn't is amazingly planned out in each detail to make sure no character is winning in a situation where they shouldn't. Cuss it just ain't that kinda media. Go watch something else and save yourself the time cuss you just fundimentally dislike a core device of the show ya know?
I love how they gloss over Spencer getting Anthrax poisining so quickly. I mean they do this for ALL traumas but I feel like they should've at least shown him struggling to breath whilst running for the next few cases, maybe some people being double worried to let spencer go into crime scene alone, and of course spencer holding this against them. I need them to go "spencer I don't think-" "Who was it that helped solve a case whilst DYING of Anthrax??? cuss last I checked you wern't the one laying with a breathing tube up his nose for a week. So anyway this 6th cup of coffee is super needed at 11am"
The removal of the sexism pisses me off not because it just affects Sokkas character but because it has ruined almost every woman in the show.
Suki takes off her make up often, as if it isn't a large part of her cultural identity and personality, as if her being a kyoshi warior and her destinctly femenine clothes are something to be ashamed off or that hinders her. Because its only her that gets this treat amongst the warriors, and shes the only main kyoshi warrior for the audience.
Yue's entire character is removed. It is replaced with what I think is meant to be a sympathetic princess to the people, she joins the nans in the kitchens and make deserts for the children. Like a disney princess whose quirky and silly and held back only by her title of a princess. Gone is the battle between her desire to help and her duty to be a water tribe ideal woman. Gone is her realising that the best way to help her people is to not be an ideal woman, but to take action and to do what no one else can, to become one with the moon so that she can forever help not just her tribe but the entire world. It is depressing, it is deep, it isn't fair to her but when has the world ever been fair?
Katara aswell. Her bending is forever unlocked by men (Aang and Jet), her defiance of authority is lessened and her naievety is also changed. A lot of her motherhood role is also completlty gone since they have changed Sokkas sexism into elder brother smothering. Her fight with Paku holds a lot less significance since she has no RAGE behind her. No rage that has built for YEARS as time and time again people have said no to her face for being a woman, for being weak, for not being enough simply because of who she is. that doesn't exist for her anymore because the water tribes are just...nice. We see one bad person in the water tribe and its Hadoka and he's mean to sokka! Kataras rage comes from Paku saying no to her, and whilst thats swell, it changes her entire "I'm a master now" moment into just...lame girlbossery. Thats kinda how the entire last 2 episodes felt like for her character. A common girlboss character without the emotional depth to make it femenism.
I think my main issue is that both shows set themselves up as being femenist by nature. The og show wanted to tackle issues with sexism, using book 1 as its main demonstration with it, but the theme still follows throughout the narative. netflix's show outright said they were removing the sexist elements. When you place youself onto that pedastal, any sexist writing you have becomes emphasised.
The og show undoubtably has sexist moments! Irohs comments to June are the most obvious to me, a long with a couple comments from Zuko later on. You can certainly argue that the extreme lack of GOOD mother figures is an issue (Kat and Sokkas mother is dead, Zukos is 'dead', and Toph is awful and rather quite compared to her father). Theres other examples, although currently my brain cannot think of any since I don't often write indepth critisms.
The live actions main point of sexism is its female main characters. we literally meet Yue in the kitchen! Women can be in kitchens but that is certainly a choice! Theres this strange hatred for make up aswell, yes with Suki but also with Sokka. His war paint is removed. Its like saying make up cannot be worn by strong fighters which is rather sexist. Speaking off: not putting Sokka in the kyoshi outfit is just...dumb? If you want to show him learning the style, having him wear the outfit. Its an aspect of the style and philosophy. A man wearing make up and a skirt doesn't emasculate him yet the show makes it feel that way with the refusal to do it. "Oh but then you'd have Sokka and Suki kiss in the kyoshi outfits" who cares. "it will look like lesbians" it won't. Even if it did, who cares? you can't be 'femenist' and anti-lesbian. Putting Sokka in the Kyoshi outfit, having him respect it, is just as important as having Aang learn the other elements, or Iroh creating lightning redirection. Why? because it shows a respect of culture, and how you can blend that into your own way of thinking. It's cultural extchanged based on respect.
When you name yourself femenist, yet have explicitly sexist writing, your GOING to get dogpiled with critism based on that 'femenist' msg.
I'm gonna be so real all I can thank about is how in an AU where they didn't all just die eventually Sarah, Rory, and Erica would simply be 'to young' for Benny and Ethan. Like socially if people saw these two 30 year olds hanging out with what looks like high school kids people would look twice.
Like sure those two dying whilst the other three remain imortal is sad. But what about all those years they do have together, but feel preasured to split apart? What about when Benny starts getting lines along his forehead and Ethan loses the baby fat on his cheeks? what happens then when Erica still has working knees, or Sarah never gets smile lines, or Rorys hands never earn calouses? Because even if Benny and Ethan decide to join them in their vampirism, that still a few years older than their friends, a few more years for them to collect these wonders of aging, a time to see their bodys become what could've been.
NO but really how did anyone in the Anubis house pass their gcses? or their A-levels? Or whatever form of education that stupid bording school used? cuss they basically NEVER revise, the Sibuna gang are probally falling asleep in lesson every other day, and the rest live with Sibuna which automatically means hell.
the most supernatural aspect of that show is that none of them seem to like...fail fail school.
RIP Hakoda your character assassination in the LA was awful
Episode 3 thoughts:
Having Jet and the mechanist in one episode was a risk that didn’t entirely work, but is something I am impressed with. I would NOT have written these episodes together, but I think it's a pretty interesting take. It really pits Katara and Sokka against each other in a very interesting way, whilst placing Aang in a middle ground.
I mean I HATE that they go “omg…you are the bad guy” like NO REALLY. But also like…assigning BAD and GOOD to people through just SAYING they are is soooo odd. Like no thanks. Let US work that out, have Katara be betrayed and hurt, not her just casually calling him a bad dude.
Oh also the no bending zuko vs aang fight? Pretty interesting it showed Dallas’s tallents with martial arts in a really fun way because I could actually see it beyond the fire bending! PLUS the use of props in the fighting was fun! Zuko breaking that stick off and using it, Aang defending with the plates and baskets, it was all really dynamic! Oh plus zuko being hit by a broom. Oh and then the fights in the carpet drapes!?that was filmed interestingly (though the music was…a choice).
Katara and Sokka riding the postal delivery carts up to the castle was a cute throw back to the original show, and also interestingly explored omashus own culture and how it can be used in ‘fights’. It was a neat addition rather than just walking there.
“You have my notebook” is such an odd line. I wish they went into more detail as to WHY this notebook is so important in the first few episodes because currently it means literally nothing. Like it seems to hold a log of his journey? Or his knowledge of the avatars? But like…a little more depth please! Cuss it IS interesting to know that Zuko put EFFORT into his research and it’s almost funny that he’s the one that teaches aang parts of what past avatars have done. Like its very comical! And Zuko losing it over it being missing is even more funny.
Iroh unironically going “for the fire nation” was….a choice. And not a good one in my opinion. Especially since it FEELS like they are planning on keeping the white lotus plot line (they did show Iroh buying a lotus tile) so for him to so casually do that it just feels odd. Like him protecting zuko? Normal. Him doing that??? eeehhhhhhh.
Ozai would be SO into looksmaxing. He invented it. He mews in his sleep.
....I ran out of more space
the northern water tribes wall looks pretty cool. I also like how they add like...specific names to the northern and southern water tribe areas we see. It adds a little realism.
the pakras the northern water tribe people wear arn't all the same and I think its a really cute detail. its a great addition that expands upon the animation. its sick.
Iroh casually and polietly insulting Zhao and then zhao insulting him back is some much needed political awkwardness I needed.
YUE MIXING THE DESERT FOR THE LITTLE GIRL WITH BENDING. ITS SUPER CUTE.
"that I was stuck up?" "yeah! :D UH I mean no" I hate this change BUT this is funny.
I kinda love how they show HOW out of touch the north is via their understanding of fire nation armour. I mean I know its done in the show I just love that they kept it in.
I like the healing dummy in the healer hut. I think its a very sick addition.
I like that Kuruk is a thing. I also like how Yue doesn't JUST beleive that Kuruk was an avatar who didn't do his job. Its sweet its like Katara and Aang. that cute little paralels comming through again.
honestly I have a love hate relationship with Aang seeing past avatars. on one hand Its great to get to see them more, and it foreshadows the final invasion and aang trying to seek help before choosing his own path. on the other hand, it sometimes removes his agency when they do these things for him. specifically with Kyoshi.
I like how Kuruk holds power, how he blows the snow away and his voice gets louder. I also love WHY he cannot do what Kyoshi did. I love that they play on old cannon to expand on their own. It's sick.
"silly avatar"
I like how in episode 8 Sokka seems to be taking on a leadership role in the fight, specifically by calling out commands to Katara and Aang. Its a prety nice addition.
"one way or another this is how my journey ends" the fact that Iroh just has to accept that Zuko is willing to die for this. thats fucked. its good.
I like that they use Kuruks knife. it adds a nice touch I guess.
I also like that zhao acts as though killing the ocean would be insane and not just killing the moon. its so funny.
MOMO DOES ONE THING THIS SEASON AND ITS SAVE A CHILD AND ALMOST DIE. best character ever made. I ma so glad he was used in this show.
the spirit oasis is insane I kinda love it and I kinda hate it cuss HOW IS THAT BEING HIDEN BY THE CASTLE. if they had decended a few more stairs I'd beleive it but oh god. I will say the abundance of flowers is really cute.
Zuko went under the ice as well.. him bursting through hte suface looks sick. I'm glad he's an idiot in this series as well.
I like the fish.
zhao actually like has a plan and for once in episode 8 he is scary.
THAT RED MOON FUCKS. its intresting how they move to it being completlty red compared to the animation being deprived of colour. Its an intresting twist stylistically. I also reallly like how the world starts fading to black the moment rhe fish is killed, its just a reallllly sick thing. I always loved how the seige of the north is animated so for them to do it gustice style wise its fun.
"master of three elelements, hasn't really got the same ring to it" is helarious. "touching, not that I care"
SEEING THE BOAT MAKE ITS WAY THROUGH THE WALL WAS INSANE. IT WAS MESSY, IT WAS DANGEROUS, IT WAS IMPOSIBLE.
I think the destruction shown to the buildings is actually shown much better in the LA then in the animation, for obvious reasons. Either way I like it.
Hahn staying behind for the others to retreat is an intresting change. I'm still not sure if I LOVE it but it is an intresting change.
the ocean spirit LOOKS dangerous and insane. that is SICK. Its like if Gozzila was clapped.
I like how all the water tribes people are bowing down towards it.
"he's a small man whos gonna meet a small end" we love you Iroh
Zuko and zhaos battle o the bridge looks good, I love that they kept the animations stylistic choice of fire lighting up the world despite the moon. it adds such a good contrast between them and the world and UGH yes.
Zukos desperation for zhao to be lying is so painful.
I've been so negative to the LA so heres a few things that I genuinely loved. Spoiles ahead. duh.
Sukis eye make up. the yellow blend into red? a nice subtle change to her character design that reallly adds to her
Zuko having those avatar dolls and their eyes lighting up. was cute
Zuko getting so hissy and destroying his room cuss his journal was missing. very relatable, very silly, the way Iroh is just kinda there realllly shows their dynamic well and also shows how Zuko IS just a stressed teenager
all the maps and drawings on the walls. they are very pretty and I'd love to have some of them irl
the entire scene of Suki and Sokka training together. Sokka slowly following her, Suki directing his moves and changing his forms. it felt like a dance and reallly highlighted how beutiful and deadly martial arts can be. it was also just filmed very sweetly with little noise beyond a sound track and grunts. Genuinely the best scene of episode 2 (and maybe the whole show).
Zuko unirioncally trying to fight Kyoshi??? it was so random but SO fitting. I aspire to be as stupid as this dumbass.
Sokka going "leader vs leader" to Zuko when asking him to fight was very cute and I HOPE they keep this style of interactions in like season 3 if they get that far.
JET USING THE HOOKS ON HIS SWORDS TO CONNECT THEM AND USE THEM AS ONE LARGE EXTENDED SWORD??? so intresting. SUCH a good use of props and how dynamic the fights in this show COULD be.
Longshot. Idk they are just so funny to me, I love how they are just casually posed on a tree as they shoot the first arrow.
the mechanist telling Sokka that he's tallented when it comes to engineering. it was very sweet, although I feel like it might bite the writers in the ass eventually. but for now it was very sweet.
I know in a past post I complained that Aang taught her bending to much, BUT Jet helping her open up about her mother and it helping her bending was an intresting take. I can see why people would hate it, but also why people would like it. Its intresting, its unique, and introduces an intresting paralel of Katara struggling to bend because of her emotions, and (hopefully) zuko facing that same issue later on in the series.
OMA AND SHU. best change of the entire series, truly the ultimate step up from the og, it works so well. I've seen this change in fanfiction and always loved it there, so happy it's now in a cannon media. Also the art work as they explain is very very beutiful.
Jets actor is honestly pretty fucking good. his "I thought you were on our side. On my side" speech in episode 4 was very sweetly done and it FELT complex with his emotions. espeically the choked up "i am nothing like the firebenders" MY GOD. Its a different take on Jet that shows a bit more of his sympathy then in the show and I think it realllly works. Props to the actor.
Zuko struggling to lie during episode 4 and make up excuses as he walks around the prision. Its so fucking funny to see him struggle and be all "well...my comanders gonna be pissed if I don't get to my duty in times" its so funny. I love Dallas I think he does a great job with Zuko and his characterisation will only get better if the show continues.
changing it to Sokka and Katara in the cave from Aang and Katara is honestly pretty cute? I know it takes away from the building romance with Katara and aang (although the show has cut so many of their interactions then this time it really WOULD feel forced) BUT it does work to expand and examine the theme of family that Avatar as a thing LOVES. Its espeically sweet arfter we've seen Katara and Sokka struggling deeply with each others wants and desires earlier in the show (espeically since this is stright arfter Jet). ( I am slightly pissed that its KATARA who is the skeptic in the tunnels. they could have the same argument with Katara being the one to believe. but oh well). Their argument was well worth it, it was long building, and truly felt like the two had buckled under the stress of leaving their tribe. Plus with the glowing crystals its like they are surrounded by stars which I think adds to the idea of missing home.
finishing the song secret tunel to then go "yeah there doomed!" with the biggest smile on his face. 10/10 comedy.
The arctitexture of the Omashu palace AND the crystals he bends are extrodinarily stunning. I mean the crytals look like smash beer bottles when broken, but when they are crystals???? suppper pretty.
ZUKOS PONY TAIL DOES THE PONY TAIL SWING BACK AND FORTH! Okay I know this is dumb, ut in the animation it didn''t happen as much or as extreme so it pleases me that real world physics are happening. Plus its just so silly.
The earth benders talking about how much was LOST during Irohs siege of ba sing se was pretty powerful. I've always been slightly irked that they wash over Irohs past and that he is JUST a good person, so it felt pretty cool that they took the time to kinda have him be....confronted by it? "I was a soilder" "you were a butcher!". It was a very quick examination of grief and ptsd, we got to see Irohs own sort of views about what happened, we got to see another persons desire for revenge because of the war, it was an odd scene for what we know of Iroh but it WAS intresting.
The funeral scene. "what a great honour for you and Lu ten to die in service of the fire nation" AND THEN ZUKO ACTING LIKE IT WAS WRONG TO SAY THAT. god. And then offering the medal that lu ten gave him to Iroh to properly comfort him? I was sobbing. It was a beutiful examination of Zukos conflict with what is expected of him, and what he WANTS to do. and then sitting by his side when no one else would? and Irohs tears only NOW comming once Zuko joined him? It was reallly and beutiful scene. I am so happy they added this.
genuinely when it was revealed that the tunnels where changing??? chills. I expected it. but it still shook me to my core. Maybe its cuss of the funeral scene before hand but either way props to them.
Okay so the animals sometimes looks goofy, BUT they also express WHAT they are so well. I love all the animals they look so fluffy and silly.
Iroh using the chains against hte earth soilders, once again some fun fight choreography and I am living for it.
Katara finding the badgermoles reacting to emotions with like...wonder and then Sokka going all "soo uhhh Mr badgermole" Was SO cute and in character.
Sometimes theres issues with the earth bending speed, but in the Bumi and Aang fight I found all the speed rather fitting. When he threw rocks, he THREW them. espeically the smaller rocks those shits are DEADLY. I mean that recreations of the animations scene where he bends over the rock looks goofy, like I get it but it didn't quite translate well BUT The rest of the fight looked pretty good. (and whilst I GET why it was important for Aang to face this challenge of this or that, it was upsetting for BUMI to be the one to do that. There are multiple other characters where it would make more sense, with Bumi being an old friend it just feels wrong. "you think like a child" "Is that really so bad?" was very sweet though.). I think Im a little over critical of what they've done to Bumi. it is a sweet story line and I can KINDA understand Bumis stance. realistically it wasn't that awful of a change its just jarring cuss its BUMI. Love his dress though I think it REALLY adds to this diversity of cultures and earth kingdom citys.
Seeing Zuko with that bandages arround his head and all his hair kinda really hurt. Also the use of leaves from the vine again. very sweet. "home. everything I need is on this boat" IT MADE ME SOB SO FAST. For all this shows changes, the changes they do with Zuko and Iroh work. The way Zuko saw the air bison and STILL chose getting his uncle to safty over even mentioning them? wonderful.
THE ICE DISKS! KATARA LITERALLY SAYING SHE GOT IT FROM THE EARTH BENDERS! its pretty cool. I like that they are already going deep with the benders taking elements from other bending styles is super fun!
Sokka and the little girl
I ran out of space heres more.
Zukos sass to Lietenant Jee for the ice blocks. Its really fucking funny.
the patterns on the firelords dress robes are realllly sick. I think because its so many similar shades of red there was a real chance of blending together that the little gold details just add that little pop that makes it work. Plus it reminds me of snake skin or dragon scales.
Katara and sokka in the background when Aangs tryna cross into the spirit world. its some cute little comedy that I think works welll.
AANGS SPIRIT LITERALLY LEAVING HIS BODY WAS SOOO FREAKY BUT SO COOL.....Katara and Sokka joining is a choice.
"when have I ever caused trouble" and Iroh just looking so done with Zuko
the bar talk where they discuss some past adventures was pretty cool. I mean without the previous context of the animated show those references mean nothing but its cool to atleast say that the journey isn't as quick.
June. June rizzing up iroh and zuko being disgusted. June is so pretty. Have I mentioned shes pretty?
Wan shi ton (i never know how to spell his name sorry) he LOOKS imposing, he feels imposing, him being so aghast at "birdie"
SOKKA UNIRIONCALLY USING DISCOMBOBULATED. Its so fucking random.
SEEING THAT KATARA SAW HER MOTHER LITERALLY BURN TO DEATH! THAT IS INSANE. I personally didn't find the whole seening her mother scene emotional UNTIL THAT POINT. and then seeing Koh was wild. Although I think some of the fear aspect comes from KNOWING what he as a spirit does. It still a jump scare
seeing sokka hear 'hadoka' say that he isn't meant to have peoples lives in his hands. that hurt. I hate for waht it does to Hadokas portrayl BUT for sokka? oh it adds up nicely.
Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but it feels like Monk Gyatso is similar to how Iroh was in the spirit world in Legend of Kora. Which I think is really intresting to have him just BE in the spirit world. It once again adds an intresting paralel between Aang and Zuko. AND seeing him tell Aang that it wasn't his fault, that he COULDN'T do anything, essentially telling him that leaving was the best thing he could've done for the world...it was really sweet.
ZUKOS JOURNAL RETURNS IN EPISODE 5. its so silly I literally love this journal.
AANG BURRYING AN ACORN AS AN OFFERING TO HEI BAI WAS SUPER CUTE. It felt different to the animation because it was a direct offering from Aang, rather than an indirect offering/promise to heal the world. It was a very nice change to the origional show.
Episode 6 the intro with the naration as Zuko checks his outfit. and then having Iroh correct his uniform for him. very sweet, going all in on the father son bond. "how do I look :3" "like a prince" IM SORRY I LOVE THESE ACTORS. they really do fit there characters.
Jee saying "he may be a prince, but hes not our prince" was GOOD. Espeically with Iroh going SO cold when he tells him off. Idk I like how they've changed Jee in this show, I think its for the better. Its great cuss you can understand WHY the crew feel this way when it comes to zuko yet you also feel bad for him. idk I think they just succeeded with redoing this plot line.
the main Roku shrine is STUNNING. all the small details, the the relics from past avatars, the actual marble (?) statue of Roku. God its stunning I love it. The forst sets always look a bit naf but the BUILDING SETS???? oh they fuck.
"uh, its me aang :3" god he's so silly. also I like that they make Roku kinda a joke. Idk its kinda stupid but his introduction is great. I mean its awful but also I love the way how hes just a goofball. I hate him but I love him. I get why he didn't stop the fire nation now.
"anything you need" "it has to do with Koh" "anything but that." IS PEAK DIALOGE I AM SORRY.
I find it intresting that they brought the comic lore into the show with the mother of faces. I mean the totem is...awkward? but its still intresting and I LIKE that they've taken this risk. I also like that theres this joint relationship between the avatarsa nd the mother of faces since she apparently brought itdentity to us. its cool.
this is so fucking small but having female generals at the war meeting.
OZAI IN THE MEETING IS SCARY. WHEN HE SHOUTS ENOUGH????? godamn. I have loved Daniel Dae Kim since lost so maybe this is me just fan girling.
IROH HAS HIS TOPNOT CUT OFF VIA ARROW???? okay I have a love hate relationship with this. it IS such an intresting display of the archers presision and also a GREAT attack via Zhao but also...ah. Wait have I misunderstood this scene? maybe I did but this is what I understood. oops? maybe?
THE BLUE SPIRIT MASK. On one hand it looks like someone 3d printed it. on the other hand it feels like mechandise you buy of your fav play. If your looking for critisism this mask will be a good place to start, if your looking to bully zuko for being a theatre nerd, this mask is a great pleace to start. ALSO WHEN HES IN THE RAFTERS AND ALL YOU CAN SEE IS THE MASK? motherfucker id thank that was a spirit. Im sorry the mask is both SO scary and so goofy and I think that really works for how INSANE zuko infiltrating this stronghold is. Like its a perfect blend of "shit hes like...actually a tallented dude?" and "shit he might be the biggest dumbass on the planet???"
I actually really like Aang and zuko fighting together on the wall. If they manage to get to season 3 I can see some REALLY cool edits to the dragon dance because of the framing. Its some really cool fight choreography.
I love that you can LITERALLY see Zukos thought process to put his sowrds to the avatars throat. can you see his face? no. can you still see the cogs turning? yes. Its really cute.
I love how they shatter the mask. I think it would've been better if they shot the other side so it makes a little more sense for Aang to unmask him then and there since he'd recognise the scar. But I do like the change in how he is hurt.
Aang and Zuko squabbling and him going "fine. have it your way" like brothers. Aang staring at him and zuko being pissed like an elder brother. Aang asking stupid questions like goat hair or rabit and then zuko literally answering it honestly. ( side note Aang praising zuko for how detailed his notebook is and essentially saying that it took the place of the mons in terms of helping him. you just KNOW that fucked this boy up.). I could write an entire post about how much this small scene means to me. I also love how you KNOW exactly what line caused Zuko to blow up at Aang. its a conflict between his true self (the caligraphy brushes and the jokes and the friendship) and what his father desires and what he fears. It's so good. and then Aang apologising for hurting him? AND THEN GOING STRIGHT TO THE AGNI KAI. God.
the change where Iroh trys to step in is...an intresting one? I'm not sure if I like it or not.
I do like that zuko attempts to fight back even if its just dodging for the most part. and then I like how Ozai doesnt even dignfy his attacks by using both hands becuase he KNOWS he doesn't need to. and then how Ozai puts zukos hand over his heart because he knows Zuko wont have the guts to burn him. even when he gives him the chance to end it zuko won't take it. that Agni kai scene really is intresting. I also like that they add a shoulder burn. its a very cool adition.
It is very cool to see ozai give him his quest. It STARTS as almost...pleasant? Like he sill has faith but the MOMENT zuko opens his mouth it slips stright into anger. AND THEN THE CHANGE SO THAT HIS CREW IS THE 41ST. THAT. MEANS. SO. MUCH. That is genuinely such an insane thing.
Episode 6 is genuinely the best episode of this show. It adapts the origional episodes and turns them into something great but also its own. I love Irohs naration I think it frames the episode really well.
Because they removed the Pirates I like how they changed who blew up zukos ship and how it was a small cruiser and not the whole ship.

Hearing Aang over explain how bending works each episode is genuinely so annoying. Now listen, I know the original show also has info dumped about bending. But at appropriate times!
It feels like whenever Katara is bending with Aang around he just takes the time to say how air bending works. And then Katara can magically do the move. It doesn’t draw this obvious distinction between the bending forms, if he had said that for air benders it's about blah blah or if he had mentioned how a friend used to do an exercise where they follow the push and pull of the ocean that would be decent. It would show the difference, show how Aang as a bending master can be helpful, but also how he isn’t a stand-in for an actual water bending master and also explain why HE can’t just start water bending like a genius.
I think a lot of the issue stems from making Katara an idiot when it comes to water bending. She couldn’t even draw a water droplet up in the live action, yet in the animated show she was teaching aang during the first few episodes what she DID know. This allowed for the two benders to play off each other, to explore Kataras own self-worth issues when it comes to being the last bender of her tribe, and also explore how Aang's inability to self regulate because he is 12 can unknowingly hurt his friends. But in the live action, Katara isn’t skilled, she can’t do anything, they literally remove the entire fighting scene of Zuko's ship which is SUCH an important moment for Katara and her bending! It's frustrating. Honestly if she can’t even teach herself to lift a water droplet on her own I don’t have that expectation of her growing into a master bender status once she DOES learn the actual forms. It's her determination, her natural ability, her attempts to use her bending to help that make her a really interesting and powerful character in the early episodes of season 1. She doesn’t have that in the La and any sense of natural talent or personal experimentation is replaced with Aang going “well the monks said-”.
No Aang, the monks didn’t say anything because Air bending and water bending are different bending forms!
“Is katara the fire Lord since she’s the one that beat azula” no. Duh. Azula forfeited the agni Kai by shooting her lighting at katara, so by the time katara beat her the agni Kai was over.
The real question we should be asking is if using dynamite and other explosives in an Agni Kai is allowed and in turn if sokka and toph can become join fire Lord. (Sokka uses the explosives, toph blackmails him into a joint leadership)
death note au where everythings the same except Light calls the death note his 'burn book' and uses a larger variety of deaths like getting hit by a buss.
Misa asks "are you referencing mean girls?" and Light in all his closeted shame goes "the fuck is mean girls?" knowing damn well he used to twirl his hair and kick his feet, writing in his pink fluffy diary about his phd level analysis of Mean girls when he was 11.
A lot of peoples defenses for the live action start with "its an adaptation it's not gonna be the exact same show" and like...duh??? Most people who are writing criticisms for the show aren't criticizing it because it's a bad adaptation alone, they point out flaws that come down to it just being a bad show. Adaptations are tricky to get right because they are essentially a professional fanfiction retelling, you have to work out what is the most important parts to carry across the main theme, sometimes that means you have to change the characters personalities or even arcs. We understand that. Many successful adaptations get that (think lord of the rings, or [i'm sorry to say this] harry potter. or even better yet good omens!). Why do those adaptations work then? because they adapt and write a fluid story BASED on that original work. It's there, USE IT.
The live action doesn't work for me because it fails to write its own story well. The exposition dumps, the clunky dialog between characters, the pacing. It feels like a rough draft and not a final product. Like there is SO much potential in this show and I really hope it gets a season 2 with a larger budget and a couple more episodes because I want them to do well. There's a couple of really cute small things that are so interesting like Zuko having those avatar dolls or Sokka and Suki first training together and her correcting his form. I want more of this and less of them just dumping future lore on me for no reason. It would really help them narratively if they just let some things remain a mystery to new audiences.
new drinking game: take a shot whenever they say the word "balance" in the new live action avatar.
my opinion has changed. Brennan is pretty chill SOMETIMES (when she isn't being written to go on some odd political tangent thats a product of its time). Booth still annoyes the FUCK outa me but theres times where I can see why their dynamic could work. They really do act as a divorce couple who still kinda wanna shag at times but know they REALLLY shouldn't open that can of worms again (only without the shagging in the show. pushing the asexual headcannon onto all of these damn characters)
Also I know it makes sense cuss of where they work, but theres something so charming about ALL the characters being writen as smart. Sure they have their own sprouts of knowedlge and random facts they know cuss of a hyperfixation from when they were 11, but no one is just dumb or stupid. Sometimes in crime shows you have the 'good at their job, still kinda fucking stupid' where its like....in a room full of normal people their the smartest, but in a room full of their colleges they are clearly the dumbest by a SHOCKING mile. That doesnt exist within the main team (beyond Booth). Their hirearchy of knowedlge comes from their years of working BUT MAINLY their ability to socilise and I find that very funny because it leads to obvious and understandable hirearchy shifts depending on the situation. It's super cute.
Zack is still my fav character <3 he's so nerdy and stupid and hissy and he reminds me of a wet dog. His dress sense is unfortunatly very relatable.
Okay so im finally watching bones, which is honestly tragic since I love me a crime show.
how did they manage to make sooooo many unlikeable characters???? Like don't get me wrong I'm used to an unlikeable character in my crime show, it happens, characters arn't meant to be liked by everyone. But jesus TWO main characters that just....suck. As people, as characters, as everything. Booth and Brennan seem to be the emotional core of the show but genuinely everyone else is just more intresting to me.
I will say the christmas episode where they all got locked in? Best thing they've done with their characters so far (I'm only just watching season 1. who knows maybe they get better). The deeper dive into her family problems, having it revolve arround christmas so that her life acts as a foil to both the murder AND his own family problems was cute. PLUS introducing his kid??? I didn't realise they could make me feel sympathy for this man. It was also realllly sweet how everyone sorta adjusted their outlooks on each other/ found ways to help each other out when they were maybe dying. It was just a really good episode honestly I wish more were written like it.
Zack my love, your nerdy autism makes me go brrr<333
....was this to hate ridden? its honestly not a bad show, the actual sets are cool and the skeleton props FEEL spooky idk if they're realistic but they are spooky. Plus the murder writing is intresting and you can defo see how other shows were inspired by this show in A LOT of ways.

blah blah blah greek mythology blah blah when we imply Grian is the sun we indirectly imply that Scar is icarus in 3rd life. "oh but Sirius that makes no sense" hush now. it does.
will you keep posting ethan and benny content on your page?
Just because you asked, no. Never again. You’ve ruined it for everyone now.
went to a bodybuilding competition. i misunderstood the objective and brought with me water (35 L), carbon (20 kg), ammonia (4 L), lime (1.5 kg), phosphorus (800 g), salt (250 g), saltpeter (100 g), sulfur (80 g), fluorine (7.5 g), iron (5 g), silicon (3 g) and trace amounts of fifteen other elements
what with the live action almost being out, people have been talking about how great its gonna be because we can now truly see the characters as their ages and...huh? I don't mean to be rude but one the actors are gonna age both on screen and off, eventually if they did all 3 seasons the kids won't look like their ages. Additionally half the actors arn't even the characters ages so I don't quite understand that argument. I'd also like to add that, at least for me, I never misunderstood what age the characters were in the animated show. I understood Aaang was a young child, that katara was somewhere in the middle, and Sokka was the eldest of the group before Zuko came. It might not be EXACT ages but I understood simply what age they could be. They also look like kids compared to all the adults in the series. So when people say that we finally see them as children I just don't understand that at all. Maybe I'm dumb and misunderstanding the comments.
The Roman republic wouldn’t have fallen if they gave Caesar some estrogen can’t lie
Okay so not a on-shot BUT:
Go full on British pe lessons and make it bench ball. Inter house bench ball at that. Realllly give in to how pathetic this is. It’s just every house on campus playing bench ball against each other for shitty sports day points.
And of course these two lads are creating extreme practice regimes and have at least 50 pages of pure sport strategy hand written. Yes they did ignore their homework for this. Yes it was worth it. They rated everyone’s throwing, catching, and blocking skills 1-100 down to the 5th decimal place. This is the most math either have done in their life. They have the perfect strategy worked out for their team.
Either way they lose the inter house competition because no amount of strategy can overcome an all girl team of mean girls (said with love, being on those sort of teams was great).
someone write me a one-shot au where mick stayed for season 3 and he and eddie are running dodgeball like the marines please i NEED IT
thematically for me the final life series would have to end with either Grian or Jimmy winning (circular narative for grian, Canary curse ending and it being a big final huhrah) Emotionally however I need joel to win one. Please.
Another issue with S3 is they really could've explored personal stories more (Eddie's relationship with his dad which is disregarded after Sweet briefly expels the Sibunas, and the descendants plot). Instead, they over relied on the romance which caused problems for new characters (KT being considered an obstacle for Peddie) and old ones (Patricia being jealous the entire season and Fabian not having a plot due to a lack of a romantic partner and being paired with Mara at the last minute).
I have no idea how long this has been waiting for me to read cuss I never check my inbox but OMG THIS THIS THIS! especially the relying on romance. So often (even before season 3) romance was used as a driving force for the narative or character arcs and whilst thats great...it gets boring. It's quite a large main cast with side characters being introduced every season. There isn't realllly enough school romance plots that can fit in WITH the mysteries for every character to constantly have this romance plot line. But as you said with Fabian, the writers also don't know what to do with a character once they remove that romantic partner. I think it's espeically hard for the writers to continue writing a compelling and strong character arc once the person is in a relationship. Patrica I think is the best example of this character growth stunting because in season 1 she didn't really have a massive romance arc like in other seasons. her growth happened through her platonic love for Joy sure, and eventually learning to be friends with the sibunas and realising that she CAN trust other people to help her. But no massive romantic love stories. Then eddie comes and as much as I LOVE them her own character growth was pushed back to focus on the romance. and that focus on her growth just never returned in a satisfying way for me. But also your definitly right with Eddies relationship with his dad it was such a complex and tricky relationship that seemed to only cause problems when the narative needed it to. Honestly thats how a lot of the characters negative aspects work, they are fine untill the narative NEEDS them not to be. And no this isn't me trying to say "characters need to constantly be suffering from past issues with no growth" even though as I'm reading it back it kinda sounds like I am, but certain things just don't randomly go away before returning at the same extreme level as when it was before. If they had worked through Eddies relationship with his dad and explored it before them finding a working solution, fantastic, but then they don't need to bring it back up UNLESS something new happens that shifts the peace from before. Imagine if Nina never got over her home sickness but it only popped up every 5 episode. That would feel strange and weird. I would like to add that this isn't me saying that season 3 is awful and that the first two seasons don't also have these issues, but its more prevelant in season 3 and there was less 'intresting 'special' moments to make up for it.
