bare minimum stuff i wish all cis people knew:
basic understanding of what transgender/trans means
what a trans woman is, what a trans man is, and what a nonbinary person is (and recognition there are identities under that umbrella even if they don’t know the specifics)
what (gender) pronouns are and why it’s important to respect them
why it’s good for cis people to normalize sharing pronouns
how to use they/them pronouns
why gender-neutral bathrooms are important
basic knowledge of what kind of jokes are transphobic
basic understanding that trans people face violence and discrimination
like i do not expect everyone to have a degree in Trans Studies but this is basic basic stuff you can learn to help us be comfortable and have a foundation for deeper discussions on trans topics. it would take maybe a few hours or less to get a general understanding of these things.
i don’t want to have to explain all of this every time i ask if we can do pronouns in introductions, add gender-neutral bathrooms to accessibility info, introduce someone who uses they/them pronouns, etc. if people took just a little time to learn this on their own it would be so helpful.
(cis people feel free to reblog this, and i encourage you to do some reading on anything here you don’t know about)
Tony “locked Wanda in her room”: Tony stark was on house arrest in the second iron man movie and somehow resisted the temptation to put coulson through a few floors of a compound. Kinda like a rational adult yeah?

My little brother said this, less than five minutes ago. I quote: “Girls shouldn’t be allowed to lift weights.”
He’s eleven. What the actual fuck.

Right. I feel incredibly awkward doing this, but Tumblr - I need writing advice.
Basically, I’m writing a story, and one of my characters is blind in one eye. I recognise that life with partial blindness is different to fully sighted life. However, I’m fully sighted, and I don’t want to accidentally make mistakes or offend anybody. So... I have some questions. If anybody with knowledge about any of this can answer anything, or throw in extra info, that would be great!
First off, a little background about my character. He was born fully sighted, but got into a fight at 16, and got stabbed in his left eye. He survived the attack, but even with heavy surgery, he wound up blind in his left eye, whilst his right eye can see perfectly well. He’s now 19 years old, and has a job as a hacker/computer specialist/hacktivist. Now, for the questions!
1: Is there any way that being partially blind heavily affects day-to-day life? I know that depth perception would be heavily impaired or completely gone, because of biology, but I have a feeling that there’s more to it, and it’s different from full blindness/impaired eyesight in both eyes. So, I’m just checking on this.
2: Would any adjustments have to be made to living spaces to accommodate him? (He currently lives on the road/out of his car, if that affects anything. On the same note, could he actually drive? Because of the depth perception.)
3: Are there any other effects that partial blindness has on one’s life that I might be overlooking? Like, emotional effects, mental wellbeing, etc etc.
4: Would it be an effective idea for me to buy an eyepatch and cover my left eye with it for one or two weeks, or is that incredibly offensive and not a good idea? I might edit or follow up on this post with more questions in the future if more arise. Please tell me if I’ve been offensive here, or made mistakes with phrasing, tags, anything! I don’t want to accidentally be rude! Thanks in advance for any advice people might be able to give. :)

One of these days I should actually write up, like, “a fannish guide to C-PTSD and BPD” for people who aren’t mental health professionals, so that people understand what I mean when I say a character sets off my trauma radar.
I’m writing that kind of thing for work–trying to explain these disorders to people who have them, since I can write from the perspective of having them, and so much psychological literature is essentially written by therapists as a way of teaching other therapists how to treat people, not about how to live as one of those people. But it’s hard–hard to constantly dig up my perspective and re-root it in a different position, when I’m so used to being clinically detached; hard to concisely explain things that took years of experience to learn.
I struggle also with my position in fandom? I don’t like being in a position of authority over knowledge, telling people what to think and what’s correct or incorrect. Especially in the mental health field, I go out of my way to de-emphasize my systemic power and build up peoples’ knowledge over their own lives. So I don’t want to say, you know, “That neurodivergent headcanon is incorrect!” or anything like that, ever.
On the other hand, I do kind of want to explain the frankly excessive amount of thought that goes into some of my own headcanons, because when people go, “You can’t just slap these labels on characters! You’re not an expert!” I’m like… I can slap these labels on people, not just fictional characters. I can legally diagnose people. I kind of am an expert. So I’m not coming at this from the same place as someone who’s read the Abnormal chapter of their Psychology 101 textbook. XD
And somehow, telling people, “Just read three or four of these books” has a low success rate.
We to live in a great fantasy land? A hidden hollow in a tree? An underground city? Perhaps, if real estate is good. So lets go top to bottom.
This is where the royals usually live. This style is less medieval and more Enlightenment chic. Royals can live in castles of course but if they are fashionable they have a palace.
Castles are not exactly the most cosy place to live. They are built for defense rather than comfort. Castles can be inhabited by royals and nobles.
These are great houses seen more often around modern times. These houses are usually surrounded by great parkland for hunting. Nobles usually inhabit them.
A house in a fantasy setting usually refers to a double storey home. Owned by the well to do common folk.
A small one storey home in the county.
The real bottom of the property market. Made from sticks, shit or peat, this home is usually a single room and usually shared by the livestock on a bad winter.
