like angela, her best friend and emotional confidant never calls her temperance, no matter how personal things get. and she’s always “bones” to booth, even when he’s terrified for her safety. and when hodgins, one of her oldest friends, is desperate for empathy and appealing to her humanity during the grave digger arc, he never stops calling her “brennan”.

and it’s only ever the men who try to manipulate her—her father, jared booth, or dr. stires, the old professor who tried to publicly humiliate her—that try to appeal to the an intimacy that her given name doesn’t hold

Zack avoids eye contact at all cost and will never look anyone in the eye if he can avoid it. It makes him nervous and overstimulated.

Brennan doesn’t know what the correct amount of eye contact is and overcompensates by staring directly into peoples eyes at all times. Except for Zack.

the doctor in the photo: famous example of emily deschanel's big sad blue eyes. brennan finds herself relating too much to the victim-- a doctor with few close relationships whose life revolved around her work. hank the security guard (ipso, facto, columbo, oreo!). brennan confesses to booth after he saves her from getting hit by a car, he rejects her and we get the most tragic sentence of "i will adjust".

the boy in the shroud: the romeo and juliet episode! a dead boy is assumed to be a street kid, but turns out to be a wealthy 17 year old who is in love with a girl in foster care. they suspect she killed him, but it turns out to have been her younger brother who was terrified of his sister leaving him. meanwhile, cam and brennan fight the entire episode over views on the kid, only to be resolved when brennan reveals her past with foster care. the end of the cam bad boss arc and where we got "freebie/freebie decline" from.

I am enamored with the way that the writers of the brain tumor arc in Bones managed to have it be a twist while giving you multiple very strong signs that something was wrong by taking advantage of the fact that as the viewer you know you're watching a TV show. The first two times Booth hallucinates Bones points out that these are moments of unreality but the show couches them in the context of the episodes in which they occur so that the audience can easily and unconsciously dismiss them with their preexisting knowledge of tropes.

"Oh, well Booth was briefly unconscious in the process of getting a concussion. In television, situations like this are rife with characters experiencing dreams where their subconscious solves the case for them. Plus it's a clever way to include their cameo from Luc Robitaille."

"The show really wants me to believe that that really was a ghost that helped Booth and this is another instance of Booth being right about magic in the world while Bones is wrong, but even if I prefer that small space they leave for a little ambiguity, characters in life or death emergency survival situations on TV see visions of a person who's death they blame themselves for as a way to explore a characters relationship with guilt all the time."

And it's not really until both Bones and the show essentially say "screw the case of the week, something is Wrong" that you're, rather abruptly and forcefully, prompted to consider what these incidences might mean when put together, and it's not a very happy list of possibilities.

And while this post is about how well I think they preserve the twist by meeting people's expectations when they added the foreshadowing to avoid suspicion, it should be noted that I also think this is a great example of my belief that a good plot twist is telegraphed loudly beforehand, just in a code most people won't easily decipher.

i lied, put your clothes back on, we’re actually going to talk about how brennan and hodgins are best friends and how they’re one of the most underrated pairings in the show despite being buried alive together, and hodgins being brennan’s counterpart in every au the show has done and them knowing each other from the main cast the longest and enjoying little pieces of each other that the others think are odd

Time is my enemy currently tbh I’ve been so busy this semester and haven’t had time to write let alone motivation 😔 but I’m really hoping that I can get to working on it soon, also the biggest reason I kinda dropped off writing it was bc I felt like I got stuck on the exposition and couldn’t figure out how to get to the meat of the work u know

sometimes a trans headcanon is 5 pages of careful textual analysis and reasoning and sometimes it's "i know this doesn't make sense but it's my favourite character and i get to decide the gender" and sometimes you have both within the same media and that's beautiful.
