fanfic writers are so fucking awesome man. they write novel length fics that are sometimes even better than some published bestselling books written by professional writers. like fanfic writers are professional writers to me and they gift us their masterpieces for free. they give us something we can look forward to after a long day. something from which we can seek comfort when life is hard. something that can be our own little getaway. in a world of capitalism, despite everything, they give us all of these for free. like holy fuck. shout out to every fanfic writer. I’m watching 2012 for the first time and oh my god why does ANYONE say April doesn’t have personality or isn’t likable?? Every scene she’s in she’s bursting with personality. When she gets kidnapped she starts biting. She gets snappy with Leo until he says he met a girl and she immediately changes her whole tune. She’s remarkably brave and determined. She sneaks into a foot meeting with only weeks of training bcus she refuses to do nothing. She’s quick to anger bcus she’s got such a strong sense of justice and because she never wants to take shit from anyone. She hangs out with mutant turtles in the sewers in her free time. What about this girl doesn’t scream personality????

2012 Splinter seems like the kind of dad to just mess with his kids

Like how some dads will look at their kids and think, "What if I just fucked with these guys, just a little bit"

But he's Splinter so he wouldn't be too obvious or mean about it. He kind of already does this in the show, though I think he frames them as lessons because maybe he's not entirely sure how to turn off 'Teacher Mode' and just be 'dad'

Like when he hooks his finger under Raph's jaw when he gets too cocky, or when he straight up just licked Raph's head to throw him off during training.

Or when Donnie wanted to upgrade his weapon from a six foot staff and Splinter was like,

"Hmm, a SEVEN foot staff."

"No, I mean like with technology."

"Ah, a solar powered staff."

"I'm being serious."

"I know :) "

Do y'all think he ever played with the boys when they were young?

Something tells me that they used to run circles around him and try to climb on him and either to take them off or catch them when they fell, he'd use his tail as like a third arm

I think carrying the boys (toddlers) to bed, he'd carry Donnie and Raph in each arm, Mikey with his tail because he could sleep through being draped or dangled, and Leo would walk next to him holding onto his kimono

Also a random thought that's not related to the post, but what if there was a human au where Splinter raised the human boys alongside his wife, and they and Karai (Miwa) grew up together in Japan, or moved from Japan to New York

So a Leo, who is NOT the leader of the group, doesn’t see the worth he brings to the team. He’s the “good-looks”, the wit, the occasional morale boost, and the charm.

He’s smart, but not as naturally gifted and intelligent as Donatello.

He’s strong, but not as powerful and solid as Raphael.

He’s funny, but not as loveable and fun as Michelangelo.

And he struggles to most to use his Mystic Weapon.

He literally thinks he is NOTHING without his brothers.

And that shit is really fuckin’ heart breaking, and not the kind of feels I signed up for this morning.

Fun Story to Share.

I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.

Never question whether a fic is too old to comment on.

Invalid reasons for why a character should not be redeemed:

They’re too evil! - Redemption has nothing to do with how good or evil you were to begin with.

They don’t deserve it! - Redemption is not something that can be “deserved.”

Their actions are unforgivable! - Redemption has nothing to do with forgiveness.

It’s too late for them to change! - It is only “too late” to choose redemption when a character is dead (unless the scope of the story includes an afterlife in which change is possible).

Valid reasons for why a character should not be redeemed:

It doesn’t fit the themes of the story.

They’re not an important enough character for showing the process of a redemption arc to be worthwhile.

They’re more interesting as a character who isn’t doing the right thing.

It’s more satisfying to let them keep being evil.

It makes it more satisfying when they die.

There’s probably more, but you get the idea.

Remember, redemption is when someone realizes they are wrong, and takes steps to doing the right thing. That is not something that can be “deserved,” it is not something that hinges on forgiveness, and it is not something that it is ever too late for! …Unless the person is dead or something.
