If I Ever Have To Read The Catcher In The Rye Again I Will Set It And Myself On Fire, It Is The Second

If I ever have to read The Catcher In The Rye again I will set it and myself on fire, it is the second worst thing I've ever read, right next to the first ten pages of Fahrenheit 451. There was absolutely nothing to that book, so substance, no stakes, not even an interesting slice-of-life story, just a meandering nothing that had no incentive to finish it besides "we're reading it out loud in class and your grade counts on suffering through it."

Holden Caulfield is the worst protagonist I've ever had to sit through, he's not even tolerable levels of teen brooding or the type that just needs some guidance and he'll be okay, he's just a judgemental pathetic asshole determined to keep his pity party going way past its due date because the world is so DARK and CRUEL and kids are so INNOCENT MOM you just don't understand how INNOCENT they are GOD (I will fight anyone who says "oh but depression" because he is NOT an accurate representation of depression- he may show signed of being depressed but he's an asshole and they are not synonymous)

I just couldn't root for this guy! I genuinely did not care what happened to him! I've had to read a nice few books I didn't particularly enjoy, but I could always find *someone* to root for, *something* to keep me going, but Catcher In The Rye? Nothing. The book could have ended with Holden choosing to live under the bridge like a troll and I wouldn't have cared.

And no I don't care if "the point is that it has no point" it's dumb and I hate it.

Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk

I got Catcher in the Rye the last time too. You went much more into detail, though, which I always love to see. Your anger is mine now

Random thought:

A Victorian Era zombie outbreak. The situation is relatively quickly contained. Society largely goes back to normal.

But, because rich Victorians were obsessed with the paranormal and easily bored, it becomes fashionable to have a zombie or two chained up in your garden.

Like, Lord Rich As Fuck is coming over to discuss a marriage agreement with your kids, and you decide to impress him by showing off the zombie kids you have chained up over by the rose bushes.

I'm watching Phantom Blood again, and I like to think that Dio Brando decided to do one nice thing for Jonathan.

And that one nice thing was killing George Jostar.

Like, Dio spent years watching how George treated Jojo and was just like "Damn! I might hate Jojo with every fiber of my being, but no one deserves to be treated like this by their own dad. I'm gonna spend the rest of my time destroying this guy, but I'll at least do him one favor and get rid of his asshole dad for him."

Saw a streamer claiming that it's okay for them to stream Hogwarts Legacy because they're donating money from the stream to a trans charity.

How much? Don't know. They didn't clarify that.

It's pretty clear what they're doing, though. It's not really about wanting to raise money for trans charities. If it was, they could have picked any other popular game for their stream.

They just want to play the game and use the controversy to boost their channel. The only reason they included the charity thing is to use it as a shield against anyone who rightfully calls them out.

You can't claim to support the trans community while actively promoting and supporting transphobia.

Also pretty, uh, interesting how transphobia is the only issue they saw fit to address and ignored the racism altogether

Can we all please acknowledge that Brittany Murphy was an extremely talented actor with an absolutely impressive range? And that she also had an amazingly kind and sweet personality?

I mean, can you imagine any of the films she was in with someone else in her roles? Clueless, Cherry Falls, 8 Mile, Girl Interrupted, Prophecy 2, Riding in Cars with Boys, Uptown Girls, etc.? Didn't think so. She made those roles. Those movies would have been made so much less by her absence. Even when she was given roles that had no depth or nuance, she gave it depth and nuance through her performance.

While we're at it, let's also acknowledge how horribly she was treated by the media. Like, tabloids just made up stories about her being an addict, having an eating disorder, being difficult on set. None of that was true. But she was constantly hounded about it and it was devastating for her mental and physical health. All of these lies became the common perception of her. People just accepted it all as truth.

She was an all-around wonderful person and artist. But she was destroyed by assholes deciding that she was an easy target. Even when she died, these vultures made up shit about how she OD'ed (she didn't) or died of an ED (she didn't). They couldn't even let her rest in peace.

I keep hoping that someday we'll stop letting media outlets do this to women, but I keep getting shown that there is no end to it. As long as people are getting "tea" they'll keep letting women, and even young girls, get victimized and traumatized.

I wonder what's next from streamers like the one I talked about in this post

A live reading of The Turner Diaries to raise money for the Holocaust Museum?

Or Elliot Rodger's manifesto with the promise to give some money to a DV shelter?

Oooh, what about a shot-for-shot remake of Birth of a Nation and donate to a Black charity?

After all, according to them, any amount of bigotry is canceled out by money.
