To be honest, something I see a lot in fanfiction is the reasoning for Dream’s mask being about how Dream can’t control his facial expressions well and is too readable, making him vulnerable to people knowing exactly what he’s thinking and feels. Personally though, especially now that we can reasonably say that Dream is autistic, I think it’s actually the opposite.

At least in my experience, with myself and with other autistic people, often the trouble is making the appropriate facial expression with the proper enthusiasm. Like telling a joke and people not know if you are kidding or not because you say it with such a straight face. Something I really struggle with is emoting excitement and joy so I have to be extra conscious of making sure my face is portraying how I feel so people don’t get the wrong idea.

The other thing I have to be aware of facially is eye contact, making sure to do the proper amount and/or don’t look somewhere else that makes it seem like you aren’t paying attention. (This is something I’ve realized since diagnosis that I am good at but hate, which is why I plan socializing around activities so I can focus on that instead of looking at the person.)

These are just a couple of the things on my mind when having a conversation (along with body language, tone of voice, what I’m saying…etc), that can really change how people perceive you. When not executed well people can really get the wrong impression of you, even thinking that you’re super intense, serious, a bitch, cold because your facial expressions are so stern and neutral, when in reality you could be feeling a lot of things (many people in high school didn’t talk to me and when asked later they said they were intimidated by me, and I think this might be one of the reasons why).

So, because of this, personally, I think Dream wears a mask not because he’s too open, but because he doesn’t emote properly or just doesn’t want to bother to try and emote properly, and dislikes eye contact. To not have to focus on making proper eye contact and facial expressions takes away that factor of misunderstanding and just makes conversing a lot less work and more comfortable. With a mask on, he doesn’t have to work on that part of his social masking (;D lol), now he can look where he wants and just have a resting bitch face if he wants to without worrying about how it comes across. That’s what I think is more likely the reason Dream wears a mask because he is actually naturally less expressive.

Furthermore, perhaps if he lost his mask in prison then maybe that’s a reason people in the prison are generally more cold to him and see him as less human because his expressions are so blank, giving people the perception that he’s very cold. Therefore making it easier for Sam and Quackity and even Tommy to hurt and dehumanize Dream in prison because subconsciously they are put off by his lack of emoting, which only further adds to the idea that Dream is some embodiment of evil…

i love how for fanart of basically any dsmp character there's so many variations, even with the characters with "boring" skins like purpled, except for punz. every drawing of punz i've seen has the exact same design. he's just Some Guy in a white hoodie with a medallion every single time. especially in fanart where he's next to dream, "terrifying, almost horror-like drawing of a masked creature wearing a huge green cloak and his bestie, Random Blond Gamer"

One dimensional, flat, Villain™ c!dream. it's so... boring. Reducing a very complex, multifaceted character like dream into the most storybook, children's version of an antagonist makes me want to chew glass 😭. Taking dream and using him as a vector for the most boring uninteresting ctommy whangst or as a scape goat to explain why every bad thing happens in your fanfiction (cough... passerine... cough). Like this does NOT deserve as many fics, posts, and headcanons as it gets. It's lame and boring. straight to jail, do not pass go do not collect 200 dollars.

*Obama voice* let me be clear. there is not a single character on that smp that is Just a villain who only does Bad thing for Evil Bad reasons. Even the Eldritch unknowable egg monster is fucking complex. There is no easy antagonist, full stop. And obviously all of us over here on this side of the Mississippi understand that because we're all adults with media analysis and super well adjusted and cool and medicated people. but in the wider fandom this Irks me

Ask game

Soo me and the beloved were discussing avians, bird anatomy and how birds mimic voices and start to sound like people they're near often. And i wrote this snippet and they somehow convinced me to post it

Punz leans on a column of the arch that separates their bases little kitchenette and the space dream has claimed as his impromptu "office". ((Aka books scattered haphazardly across the floor and papers plastered to the walls with anything from sticky notes to arrows speared through the scrolls like a prized kill. To punz it looks more like a mental breakdown than a functional workspace, but who is he to judge))

Dream is reading a map, at least attempting to as tired eyes scan through the scramble of lines for the 3rd or 7h time like its going to effect the outcome in any way. Punz catches his attention with a knock to the cold wood, it makes dream flinch and punz only feels a little bad, ((its routine at this point, better to act like nothings changed than make dream feel fragile with gentle movements and an unchanged outcome)) punz can tell dream hasn't slept when he raises his head to tilt it at him expectantly, frazzled feathers and hair that isn't much better off, punz doesn't comment on it. He informs dream he's going to make breakfast now, asking if he's hungry. Dream says 'no', it comes out a little sharper than he meant it, punz looks taken aback, and says he sounds like sam. Dream feels empty as he realizes he can't tell the difference anymore.

Is this just an unnecessarily long set up to one (1) line i wanted to deliver? Yes.
