Hannah hates this stupid game, she decides, as she watches yet another one of her balls speed past the pins and into the gutter. She’s good at sports, always has been, but bowling is something she completely fails to grasp. Maybe it’s the tinny music blaring from the speakers, distracting her, or maybe it’s the ill-fitting shoes that smell far too strongly of antiseptics, or the obnoxious hooting from the group of high school boys a few lanes down. Whatever it is, Hannah hates it and she wants to leave.

Kim shakes her head and smiles when Hannah tells her as much. “You’ve only played three rounds, you’re not going to get it right away. Especially if you don’t stop to aim.”

"I aim," Hannah says, and immediately regrets it. She sounds enough like a bratty child already. It’s only the third date, far too soon to let herself act this way in front of Kim.

But Kim doesn’t seem fazed by it, and she doesn’t stop smiling. She stands up, grabs an orange ball, and walks up to Hannah. “Let me show you.”

Hannah opens her mouth to protest, it’s Kim’s turn after all, but then Kim has already handed her the bowling ball. She grasps Hannah’s hand, molding it into the right position. Instead of letting go when she’s done, she lets her hand trail down Hannah’s arm, linger at her elbow. Even through her shirt, Hannah feels warm from the touch, and it makes her flush lightly.

"The lane slopes, so you need to aim a little to the left," Kim tells her. "And for God’s sake, relax. This is supposed to be fun, it’s not a competition."

Hannah smiles. “You’re only saying that because you’re winning.”

"Damn straight. Now go for it."

Heaving a deep sigh, Hannah turns back to the lane. She narrows her eyes at the pins, standing stubbornly vertical, and throws the ball with as much force as she can.

It swerves too far to the left this time, landing in the gutter only halfway down the lane.

"I’m terrible," Hannah laments.

"You just need practice," Kim says. "If it’s any consolation, I’m kind of relieved to find out you’re not perfect in every way.”

Hannah looks to her right. Kim is grinning up at her, eyes glinting. “Really?”

"Really." Kim grabs her elbow again and pulls her down for a kiss. It’s a brief peck, but it still has Hannah’s heart doing loops in her chest. "And I promise, next time you get to pick where we go."
