How to use Thou, Thee, Thy, and Thine correctly

For SOME REASON (*looks pointedly at Agnes Nutter*) this comes up a lot in the Good Omens fandom and I thought it might be useful to have a reference out there for folks who are interested!

(And to be clear: I personally do not think it is a big deal if you don’t get it right, I’m not here for judging anyone’s ability to correctly use pronouns that went out of fashion several centuries ago. But I know people like to know this stuff.)

1. Thou & Thee

The difference here is the same as the difference between I & Me or She & Her - the first one is the subject of the sentence (doing the action) and the second one is the object of the sentence (having the action done to them). So the pattern is:

“I gave her a flaming sword” vs “She gave me a flaming sword.”

“Thou gave me a flaming sword.” vs “I gave thee a flaming sword”

“Thou gave her a flaming sword” vs “She gave thee a flaming sword”

2. Thy & Thine

Similarly, the difference here is the same as between My & Mine and Her & Hers.

“I gave away my flaming sword!”

“Thou gave away thy flaming sword?!” (Greek Chorus: ”She gave away her flaming sword??!”)

“It was mine to give away!”

“And it was also thine to keep…” (Greek Chorus: “And hers to lose, and hers to seek…”)

3. BUT SOMETIMES THE AESTHETIC

You do sometimes use “thine” in places where grammatically it should be “thy”, for the same reason as the most famous example of using “mine” in a place where it should be “my”:

MINE EYES HAVE SEEN THE GLORY OF THE COMING OF THE LORD

– simply because “eyes” starts with a vowel and “my eyes” is slightly more difficult to sing when you’ve got important grape-trampling to be getting on with. So a Mighty Angel Of The Lord who was feeling particularly poetic and hoping to inspire a few songs might appear before some poor goatherder and declare:

“Avert thine eyes oh mortal, lest thy sight be robbed from thee by glory!”

But honestly, just like most modern songs are quite happy using “my eyes”, I personally think if you just stick to the one rule to avoid confusion, it’s also fine:

“Avert thy eyes oh mortal, lest thy sight be– wait where art thou going get back here I’ve got a message to deliver– oh bugger.”

Humans are fucking masochists. Like humans will eat spicy food even if their eyes start burning and they start dicipating from the spice.

Alien: I found this absolute hazardous material in your home planet and I am quite scared for how to dispose of it.

Human: Oh dear, what is it? Maybe I'd know what to do. Uranium? Mercury?

Alien: Uh...I'm not sure but my fellow crewmate tried to inhale it and...they started coughing a lot and their eyes became irritated and I can't even imagine what would have happened if they put it in their mouth.

Human: Oh...um, can you show me?

Alien: *brings out the hazardous material in a glass, secure container*

Human: That's...that's a freaking pepper.

Alien: You know what it is? Now tell me, how do we dispose of it?

Human: Y-you don't dispose it! You eat it!!

Alien: ...what.

Human: *opens container and starts biting into it to show the alien and starts enjoying the snack half-way* ooh, that's gooooodddd *tears running down their cheeks*

Alien: *slowly backs away while making eye-contact* ...make yourself seem bigger to the predator...make yourself seem bigger to the predator...

Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”

Please share this!!!!! As you resident vitiligan and fellow artist I am here to educate people on how to properly create a character with vitiligo and other things to keep in mind about the disorder.

Only 1% of the entire world’s population has vitiligo but I see so many artists making characters with it when they sometimes don’t even know what vitiligo is and pass it off as “skin pigmentation”. Like— what does that even mean??? XD

It’s not an aesthetic and it won’t get you “diversity points” so stop romanticizing vitiligo!

IS THERE ANY FANFIC OUT THERE THAT PUTS THE READER INTO THE STORY BUT NOT TO BE SHIPPED WITH A CHARACTER AND IS THERE TO SUPPORT TWO CHARACTERS IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP CAUSE I WOULD READ THE HECK OUTTA THAT

They are all unisex and each have a few different swatches. All LODs are done, but a few (especially Lucifer’s) are high poly. I couldn’t reduce them any further without very bad distortions. Asmodeus’ isn’t as bad as Lucifer’s in the polys but they are still high. Mammon’s aren’t too bad and Beelzebub’s are very low, since they have next to no mesh detail.

Future plans: Alright, shortly after the release of this I will be releasing the update for the tails which will now use a different texture space. Then will be the tattoos before I move on to work on each of their casual and demon form outfits. So that should be an experience. After that, I will be moving onto the hair and accessories of Diavolo, Barbatos, Simeon, Luke and Solomon.
