Low Tides

We're in a period of our lives right now where our daemon isn't talking as much, isn't present as much. She's still there, but further back. So we take a moment today to express that... these moments are okay and normal to have.

People who don't have a daemon aren't expected to be connected with their inner selves all of the time. People who aren't daemons aren't expected to be aware of themselves and project themselves into the world and provide and inner dialogue 100% of the time.

If you are like us right now, in a time when your daemon isn't as present as they used to. You're okay. You're fine.

Perhaps other interesting things are capturing your attention, like a new hobby or series. Perhaps you're more tired than usual. Perhaps a situation at work or school or in your family or in your country is taking all of your mental energy. Perhaps other aspects of your inner self require more attention right now. Perhaps you don't really have an explanation as to why. You're not a bad daemian. You're not a bad daemon. It's okay to feel sad or miss each other. We miss each other. Sometimes we yearn for a world like Lyra's where we could see, hear and hold each other without needing any brain power.

In case you want a few ideas of small things you can do in these times that don't require too much effort, here are a few things you can try:

Say good morning when you wake up, and good night before bed

Try to do projection for just a moment, like taking a picture, but don't strain to maintain it and don't aim for details

Have an image, small figurine or item that reminds you of your daemon and place it somewhere you will see it regularly

Say a little something to your daemon from time to time without expecting a response or a conversation to come out of it

Sending warm thoughts to any other daemians and daemons who are going through a similar time.

Like in his dark materials is there a distance limit

The answer is sort of complicated, but there is usually a distance limit. It is incredibly painful for most people to be more than a couple of a fit from their dæmon (though it varies a bit). Early on in the book the main character experiences excruciating pain when her dæmon wanders off to do something and he was probably no more than 10 feet away.

However, there are three ways mentioned for a dæmon to learn how to move long distances from their human.

The first way it is possible to is to undergo a ritual separation. There are places that dæmons cannot enter, and if a person goes in there than the dæmon must be left behind until they come out. After that they can go very far from one another. This ceremony is a right of passage for witches and shamans in a lot of cultures. Though it is very painful.

In addition, in the newer novels it is shown that people do not always get along with their dæmons. This usually reflects some deep discontentedness or internal conflict (I will not go into more detail because that is a whole other complicated thing, and I am writing up a post about it). In extreme circumstances the dæmon may run away, moving far from the person and going through the extreme pain for a while until they are used to it.

The third way is by accident. If some catastrophe accidentally forces a dæmon to go far from their person (for instance being caught in a water current and pulled apart) then they will be able to separate.

So to summarize a kind of long answer, there is usually a distance limit but there are instances where people and dæmons learn (or are forced) to overcome it. Though as another note, seeing someone without their dæmon is frighting for most people in the books. Its compared to seeing someone walk around with a severed head. So aside from witches, most people who can separate from their dæmon hide the fact from others.

This was a fun question, feel free to ask more!

˚⊹ᡣ𐭩 Respect ♡ˊˎ-

I haven’t been working with the gods for long, so this probably isn’t my place to say this, but seeing young people on TikTok treat the gods as their bestie after a week and being disrespectful to them makes my blood boil.

“I called Apollo a man-whore and he got mad🤪”

YOU DID WHAT.

OF COURSE HE GOT MAD, WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT BEHIND THIS???

I get it. The Greek gods are quite forgiving and can even be quite funny! I’ve experienced it first hand! Especially Apollon and Hermes are usually in for a joke.

But you can still be respectful.

I am clairvoyant, I can hear the gods, and I am not exaggerating when I tell you at least 5 of them have told me “wow, you are so respectful and speak so politely.” They were not surprised, perse, but they were so appreciative of it.

Of course dynamics can change over time. Things become looser and more chill. Sometimes it becomes paternal, or even loving, and then you can become a little less formal. But you can still. Be. Respectful. There is no reason not to be.

I do not wish to speak for the gods here, so please don’t take it as such, but I expected this to be common sense and it apparently is not.

I’m also very open to hear your thoughts, so feel very free to share them! Especially if you disagree, honestly, I am always open to try and see things from a different perspective!

when is an appropriate time for one to pray to the Greek gods? What if someone wants to pray to Them daily? How should one go about becoming serious about their worship?

Generally speaking, I think it’s fine to pray at any time you feel called to, and it’s absolutely fine to pray every day.

Historically it was more common to make offerings to chthonic gods (gods of the dead or of the earth, such as Hades and Persephone among others) at night, so that might be something you find meaning in.

As for becoming serious, I’d suggest that practice is the best guide. The specifics of that practice would vary depending on different factors–for example, if you have a reconstructionist focus you would want to stick as closely as possible to the historical model, although certainly that isn’t the one and only way to honor the gods.

For me what helped was just establishing a regular practice and sticking with it..That might include a regular daily prayer or prayers, offerings made on a monthly basis (a number of the gods have specific days devoted to them, such as Artemis on the 6th or Poseidon on the 8th), a schedule of festivals/rituals you observe over the year (alone or with a group), meditation and visualization work, or whatever brings you closer to the gods. Find something that has meaning for you and keep at it, even when you may not be feeling the inspiration so strongly!

Large Daemons (Golden Compass)

I wonder how people with larger Daemons get around in everyday life. Anyone want to consider the possibilities with me? I’m talking things horse sized and above. I imagine some aspects of life (walking through a university with many rooms, for example,) might be hard. What /is/ the distance limit a daemon can be from it’s owner?  I imagine some people could become drivers for horse carts and such if their daemons were horses. Or could they? would a horse daemon pull a cart? would the crush of people make it too risky for an accidental brush against someone?

Hi!!!

Could you do some orca and/or Eurasian otter analysis? 👀

The ORCA (Orcinus orca), or killer whale, is a toothed whale that is the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. Orcas are highly social, cooperative and close-bonding, confident and assertive, but adaptable and not particularly picky or fussy. The orca has excellent eyesight and hearing and a good sense of touch: these animals are highly perceptive, sensitive and aware, tactile, hands-on and practical. Orcas disable their prey before killing it and are able to detect the location and characteristics of prey in the water by emitting clicks and listening for echoes: these animals are shrewd, intuitive and somewhat cautious. Orcas frequently engage in surface behaviour like breaching and tail-slapping: they are playful and highly active. With strong teeth, distinctive pigmentation and jaws that exert a powerful grip, orcas are tough, assertive and bold, but not particularly controlling or manipulative. These animals are impulsive and somewhat reckless, but highly determined and dedicated, and may beach temporarily to grab prey before wriggling back to sea. Orcas learn to copy behaviours from one another: these animals are proficient, capable and quick to learn. Orcas do hunt seabirds but are more likely to kill and leave them uneaten: they are heedless, not frugal and perhaps wasteful. These animals are hostile and somewhat bullying, and will engage in surplus killing, that is, killing that is not designed to be for food. Orcas are confident, likely bullish, expressive and highly communicative.
