I've been thinking a lot lately about how Kabru deprives himself.

The official description of Kabru's room, which reads: "Kabru rents the basement of a tavern on the Island. It's dark, cold, noisy, and really not a comfortable place to live, but Kabru isn't home much, and he seems happy with it. The room has almost none of his personal possessions in it: the shelves are packed tightly with liquor barrels and bottles. There seems to be a figure of the winged lion on the table....
A cropped image from the official color illustration of Kabru's rented room, showing a top-down view of a desk cluttered with books and papers and a few other items. Kabru is seated at the desk with his arms folded on the surface and his head dropped into his arms, his face hidden. It's unclear whether he has fallen asleep while working, if he's having a somber moment, or if he's crying.

Kabru as a character is intertwined with the idea that sometimes we have to sacrifice the needs of the few for the good of the many. He ultimately subverts this first by sabotaging the Canaries and then by letting Laios go, but in practice he's already been living a life of self-sacrifice.

Saving people, and learning the secrets of the dungeons to seal them, are what's important. Not his own comforts. Not his own desires. He forces them down until he doesn't know they're there, until one of them has to come spilling out during the confession in chapter 76.

Specifically, I think it's very significant, in a story about food and all that it entails, that Kabru is rarely shown eating. He's the deuteragonist of Dungeon Meshi, the cooking manga, but while meals are the anchoring points of Laios's journey, given loving focus, for Kabru, they're ... not.

A cropped color image of Kabru from a side comic, drawn in a simplified sketchy style, showing him slightly hunched over with a dull-eyed expression and his hand over his belly. Text reads: "Come to think of it, I haven't eaten since yesterday."

I'm sure he eats during dungeon expeditions, in the routine way that adventurers must when they sit down to camp. But on the surface, you get the idea that Kabru spends most of his time doing his self-assigned dungeon-related tasks: meeting with people, studying them, putting together that evidence board, researching the dungeon, god knows what else. Feeding himself is secondary.

He's introduced during a meal, eating at a restaurant, just to set up the contrast between his party and Laios's. And it's the last normal meal we see him eating until the communal ending feast (if you consider Falin's dragon parts normal).

First, we get this:

A pair of black and white panels from Dungeon Meshi chapter 31. The first panel shows Rin and Kabru facing away from the viewer, looking out over the water and ruins of the fourth level. Rin is standing and holding her mage staff while Kabru sits beside her. The second panel is identical, but Rin says, "I'm hungry." Kabru responds without looking at her, "...Being revived does make you hungry, doesn't it?"

Kabru's response here is such a non-answer, it strongly implies to me that he wasn't thinking about it until Rin brought it up. That he might not even be feeling the hunger signals that he logically knew he should.

They sit down to eat, but Kabru is never drawn reaching for food or eating it like the rest of his party. He only drinks.

A crop from a black and white panel of Dungeon Meshi chapter 32. Mickbell is in the foreground with his profile partially facing the viewer, chewing on a piece of bread with crumbs around his mouth. Kabru sits opposite him, facing the viewer, and raising a wooden cup of wine to his lips.

It's possible this means nothing, that we can just assume he's putting food in his mouth off-panel, but again, this entire manga is about food. Cooking it, eating it, appreciating it, taking pleasure in it, grounding yourself in the necessary routine of it and affirming your right to live by consuming it. It's given such a huge focus.

We don't see him eat again until the harpy egg.

A pair of black and white panels from chapter 38 of Dungeon Meshi, showing close ups of Laios (right) and Kabru (left) as they face each other. Laios, wide-eyed as if he's just realized something, asks, "Aren't you hungry?" Kabru, also wide-eyed but looking taken aback, says, "Huh?"

What a significant question for the protagonist to ask his foil in this story about eating! Aren't you hungry? Aren't you, Kabru?

A single black and white panel from Dungeon Meshi chapter 38. Laios is about to move off-panel, and he's looking over his shoulder at Kabru, saying, "When you're revived after losing that much blood, you feel like you're starving. Give me a minute." Kabru stares after him in the background, still looking nonplussed.

He was revived only minutes ago after a violent encounter. And then he chokes down food that causes him further harm by triggering him, all because he's so determined to stay in Laios's good graces.

In his flashback, we see Milsiril trying to spoon-feed young Kabru cake that we know he doesn't like. He doesn't want to eat: he wants to be training.

A cropped pair of black and white panels from Dungeon Meshi chapter 61. The right shows Milsiril happily holding up a piece of elven cake on a fork. Her speech bubble says, "Aaaah." On the left she pushes the cake against the cheek of a young Kabru, whose eyes are closed in growing frustration as he tries to ignore the food. He says, "I told you...."
A black and white panel from Dungeon Meshi chapter 61, showing Milsiril, seated at young Kabru's bedside, holding out the plate of cake. She says, "You still need to rest." Kabru, seated on the bed and losing his temper, starts to pull at the bandage around his head. He says: "I just got a little scraped up! Forget this! Start training me with a sword again!"

Then with Mithrun, we see him eating the least-monstery monster food he can get his hands on, for the sake of survival- walking mushroom, barometz, an egg. The barometz is his first chance to make something like an a real meal, and he actually seems excited about it because he wants to replicate a lamb dish his mother used to make him!

A single black and white panel from chapter 62 of Dungeon Meshi. It's a close up of Kabru holding out a bowl of hot food and smiling a little. He says, "It's been ages since I had it, so I can't wait. I hope you like it."

...but he doesn't get to enjoy it like he wanted to.

A cropped black and white panel from chapter 62 of Dungeon Meshi, showing simplified versions of Mithrun and Kabru eating. Mithrun's speech bubble says, "It tastes like crab." Kabru responds, "It does, doesn't it."

Then, when all the Canaries are eating field rations ... Kabru still isn't shown eating. He's only shown giving food to Mithrun.

A pair of black and white panels from chapter 66 of Dungeon Meshi. In the top panel, Kabru holds out a plate of travel rations to Mithrun, who is staring off into the distance with a determined expression. Kabru remarks, with a slightly exasperated look, "Ignoring me, hm?" while his speech bubble says, "Unless you eat, you won't defeat the demon." In the lower panel, Mithrun turns and accepts the food.

And of course the next time he eats is the bavarois, which for his sake is at least plant based ... but he still has to use a coping mechanism to get through it.

A cropped black and white panel from chapter 73 of Dungeon Meshi, showing a close up of Kabru as he chews with a blank look on his face. His thought bubbles show that he is reciting the names of all "the world's major cities" in his head.

I don't think Kabru does this all on purpose. I think Kui does this all on purpose. Kabru's Post Traumatic Stress Disorder should be understood as informing his character just as much as Laios's autism informs his. It's another way that Kabru and Laios act as foils: where Laios takes pleasure in meals and approaches food with the excitement of discovery, Kabru's experiences with eating are tainted by his trauma. Laios indulges; Kabru denies himself. Laios is shown enjoying food, Kabru is shown struggling with it.

And I can very easily imagine a reason why Kabru might have a subconscious aversion towards eating.

A black and white panel from chapter 45 of Dungeon Meshi, showing Kabru's memory of the destruction of Utaya. In the foreground is a snarling monster that still retains humanoid features, half man, half beast. Kabru's speech bubble reads: "It was because the dead became monsters that devoured the living."
A cropped black and white panel from chapter 38 of Dungeon Meshi, depicting scenes from the destruction of Utaya. A pair of figures in elven Canary armor pull Kabru's child self away from his mother's dead body as he screams for her. There is a close up of snarling monsters tearing into human flesh.

Meals are the privilege of the living.

A black and white panel from chapter 53 of Dungeon Meshi, showing Kabru staring in the distance with an expression of growing horror, against a mental backdrop of countless lifeless bodies stretching out into darkness, and a river of blood. The onomatopoeia for 'shiver' is written over him.

Grown adults should stop getting mad when children/teenagers are uncomfortable with their porn of cartoons and start going outside

Your post was so harmless lmao if I were you I would just block all those unhinged Ar.ya stans, they're bullies themselves who feel entitled to harass people for suggesting Ar.ya is anything less than an angel. And you're right, Sansa said something mean one time when she was traumatized for Ar.ya's wolf getting HERS killed. But Ar.ya calls her stupid, blames her for everything, embarrasses her on purpose, physically attacks her multiple times and it's no big deal.

What I'm genuinely shocked about is how many grown ass women are acting like Arya and Sansa (who are like 8-11) not getting along is this incredibly big issues and that either of them are the spawn of the devil like 😭 guys this are literally little ass children obviously they ain't going to uphold the highest of morality with their siblings like chill

Mind you arya literally assaulted sansa and ruined her expensive dress. It’s established that they’re mutually mean to each other. Some people just want them to be victims of bullying I guess, as if they’re not having larger issues at this point lmao.

Everything i'm hearing about these two gives me more proof that at the end of the day the adults (the parents) should have helped them get along 😭

the dust jacket to the mob psycho 100 fanbook, which has a lineup of many of the characters (the main cast, the body improvement club, the telepathy club, as well as shinra and amakusa) standing against a white background.
a collage of images from the fanbook: color illustrations of mob, dimple, and reigen, tome's character profile, various characters as chibi animals, teru in a ridiculous outfit, and musashi in business casual. over top of all of this is the mob psycho 100 logo, and the text "official fanbook raw scans".

DRIVE LINK HERE to the official mob psycho 100 fanbook!

as far as i can find, there's not been any comprehensive scans of the fanbook put up online, at least on the english-speaking internet. soooo since there's all sorts of fun stuff in it (character birthdays! character & creator q&a's! who would be most likely to survive on a desert island! guest art by other manga authors (the one in the upper left there is by the creator of FMA)!) i wanted to make sure everybody who wants to could see it!

more info under the cut. enjoy!

5x7", scanned at 300dpi in jpg format. exact pixel dimensions differ slightly due to how my scanner's auto-crop works.

the images uploaded are exactly as they were scanned, no image editing save for cropping. they could use some editing to be more presentable (levels adjustment to bring the darks down, more saturation on the color pages, & a teensy bit of rotation/adjustment) but i wanted to upload the untouched files. i might create a new drive with cleaned-up versions at some point.

i claim no ownership over these images, please feel free to do whatever you like with them, share em, edit em, and so on, no attribution necessary.

i bought my copy from hiro_shop_japan on ebay, if anybody wants to get their own.

these are obviously untranslated- some awesome folks have scanned & translated parts of the book (particularly the qnas). you can find those here! there's also a twitter thread of translated bits from 4chan, but i can't seem to find that one at the moment.

A few months ago i made a post about Sansa and Arya and how their relationship is pretty normal for siblings (specifically sister) and how the rivalry their stans have is fucking stupid. No matter how people wanna spin it Arya and Sansa are literally children, they didn't even go through puberty before being separated, people cry and whine "Sansa did this" "Arya did that" but it's not really something i take seriously or which i blame either of the girls for and people are still under the fighting about who's more evil.

People want to make Sansa to be this evil woman who pushed Arya under the bus and got someone killed when the blame lies solely with Joffrey and Cersei or people want to act like Arya is straight up unfeeling that should act like a lady and everything is her fault. Sansa was a bully to Arya and Arya wasn't exactly nice to Sansa either, that's the truth they were children put against each other by societal norms, if you want someone to blame, blame their parents.

Some people in the bungo stray dogs fandom have this superiority complex that's so cringe to see, no you aren't better than anyone for "not shipping" the characters, no you aren't "more based" for shipping "rare pairs" and no you aren't better than the Soukoku shipper's for not shipping Chuuya and Dazai 💀 like goddamn y'all so annoying, i don't like Fyozai but you don't see me making long ass post about how much i disklike it, if you don't like the ships just don't interact with the shippers and the shipping content it's really not that hard.

+

Also y'all need to stop reducing every single other characters to what they are to Dazai, especially Chuuya that man is so we'll written and has such an interesting story but y'all love to ignore it and act like Dazai is the only one that has trauma and Chuuya is just the other part of the ship 💀

(TW Light mention of sa)

Most of the theories for his backstory is basically Yosano backstory, proud hater of the Mori sa'd theory 🙏
