I find it interesting how metamorphosis is less about the nature of gregor samsa's "horrific" transformation and more so about the social response to it and yet the transformation and the terror it elicits is what popular culture fixates on: in a sense we kind of assume the role of the outside characters in lamenting samsa's "loss of humanity" when the story is very much about how human he remains despite the people around him thinking otherwise
