The worst nightmare I ever had was about global warming. At first, it was like hell on earth. Fire, fire everywhere. One could barely breathe through the smoke and the heat had people dropping like flies. Then, the flooding came; the water reached as high as the top of houses. I remember watching the news on a malfunctioning tv while sitting on a floating mattress that was becoming heavier with water by the second. I was scared and my family was long gone. The last thing I remember seeing before I choked on the water in my lungs and woke up was the sad blue eyes of an old man sitting on a rooftop, watching the world drown. #climatechangeisreal #climatechange #globalwarming @save_earth_ https://www.instagram.com/p/BnSUVUznRlp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1spawy35br3es
For thousands of years, sea level has remained relatively stable. But now, Earth’s seas are rising. Since the beginning of the 20th century, they have risen about eight inches, and more than two inches in the last 20 years alone!
As water warms, it expands and takes up more space. That means that when oceans warm, the sea level rises. This summer, we’ve been researching exactly how global warming has impacted Greenland’s ice sheet. Our ICESat-2 mission will use a laser to measure the height of the planet’s surface. Over time, we will be able to provide a record of elevation change, and estimate how much water has melted into the ocean from land ice change.
So how much ice are we actually losing? Great question, but the answer might shock you. In Greenland alone, 303 gigatons of ice was lost in 2014!
Since we know that ice is melting, we’re working to gain a better understanding of how much and how fast. We’re using everything from planes, probes and boats, to satellites and lasers to determine the impact of global warming on the Earth’s ice.

#juarez #suroriente #artistasdelsuroriente #mural #muralismo #muralism #art #arte #color #leal #cienciaone #sirok #streetart #placemaking #publicspace #design #medioambiente #nature #activism #pollution #globalwarming #egodeath #spray #plasticfree (en Ciudad Juárez) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbVs_e7pPL5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Global warming? Or just normal weather changes?
Excerpt from this NOAA report on “sunny day” tidal flooding:
Coastal communities across the U.S. continued to see increased high tide flooding last year, forcing their residents and visitors to deal with flooded shorelines, streets and basements — a trend that is expected to continue this year. The elevated water levels affected coastal economies, tourism and crucial infrastructure like septic systems and stormwater systems, according to a new NOAA report.
High tide flooding, often referred to as “nuisance” or “sunny day” flooding, is increasingly common due to years of relative sea level increases. It no longer takes a strong storm or a hurricane to cause flooding in many coastal areas.
According to the report, nationally, five days of high tide flooding occurred within coastal communities, tying the record set in 2015. Flood days broke records in the Northeast, with a median of 10 days, and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico at five days, due to a combination of active nor’easter and hurricane seasons combined with sea level rise.
NOAA has identified more than 40 locations whose annual rates of high tide flooding are rapidly increasing. Annual rates at 25 other locations are also trending upwards but more gradually. These increases suggest a much wetter future for many coastal areas.
Sweet and his co-authors project that in 2019, the national high tide flood frequency is expected to double from the year 2000 across U.S. coastlines, with some regions seeing an even larger increase:
the Northeast Atlantic could see a 140% increase,
the Southeast could see a 190% increase, and
the Western Gulf of Mexico could see a 130% increase.
Is it just me or has anyone else recently noticed more people and mainstream media are talking more about climate change? Are more people FINALLY realizing this is a serious issue and the state of the future is at risk?
• bring your own bags to the market
• always recycle (simple but very effective)
•use a menstrual cup (goddesses, TRUST me)
• use a reusable water bottle
• use the same towel more than once (i typically pick one towel and use it for my shower for a week instead of using a different one every day) EDIT: yes, a LOT of people use a different towel everyday, i’ve been getting a lot of comments about this..
• unplug everything (instead of just turning off the lamp, unplug it)
• if you see trash, pick it up
• go thrifting
• donate (clothes, furniture, shoes, etc.)
• skip the paper receipt and get it sent to your email instead
• buy local
• open the windows instead of using a/c
• fill your house with plants
